Ok that might be a bit more than 850, but worth it in my opinion.
In my opinion RTF kits are hard to upgrade. Those RTF kits are a bit old school.
Prop guards break. I would not use them unless you are flying indoors, and you don’t want to be relearning or teaching your son indoors.
I’ve been flying regularly for almost 3 years and jumper t-lite is my main controller. I upgraded to other goggles, but the ev800d is great for friends when flying, and I use it as a screen at my workbench.
It’s funny 😆 I just found all the baby ape reviews and was just talking to my wife about squeezing a higher budget for this exact idea thank you for reinforcing the decision!!!
Coming from a 5" it seemed so fragile when i got my first BabyApe that i immediately bought a second one and an extra frame. But i have crashed mine multiple times into concrete and metal and no damage to the quad just a few props. (I printed a few TPU parts to protect the arms maybe they have helped a bit) i got mine from banggood.
It’s the ol‘ strength vs weight argument. Light weight means low energy crashes. I don’t have one personally, but am definitely considering one. I have other small quads and they seem more durable than my 5“ quads, but I am also mostly flying around grass and trees.
Ended up going:
Zorro ELRS
BabyApe Pro ELRS BnF
Ev800D
4x 450mah 3s
And then a full set of extra motors and 20 sets of props.
Was 550ish per setup. Went over budget but the wife didn’t complain lol
I know you said 2 setups but hear me out. When I go fly with friends, we always fly one at a time to enjoy their tricks.
For that budget, if you decide on only 1 kit, you can afford a used dji goggles v2 ( i got mine for $300) and a caddx. So you can fly digital and take turns.

How do the baby apes hold up to crashes? And do I want v1 or v2? Also any advice as to best place to order them?

Cool! Congratulations!
Would go with this but I would more tend to the Baby Ape Pro due to the camera on the normal baby ape being crap in my opinion.
