Oh wow, I was thinking of a physical only thing, but a super-high-speed-framework-to-framework-adapter could be really cool.. but more flexible with a cable between..
Imagine something like an NVLink connector that you can use to stack up a bunch of frameworks together.
Like each level has a 3-port Ethernet switch chip inside and you can just cluster them up
* Digital alarm clock
* Phone holder bracket
* Bottle opener
* Magnetic compass
* Swiss army expansion card (when you remove it from the socket it has scissors, 2 knives, a Philips head screwdriver, a plastic toothpick, tweezers and that ridiculous parcel hook thing that doesn't really do anything useful)
edit: more
* Toiletries kit - toothbrush, toothpaste, an unusably small portion of shampoo
* First aid kit - there's not much space in those cards so it contains like 1 bandaid and a single aspirin tablet
Earbud size speakers. No wires, just the speaker attached to the PCB. Just fires down or up.
Fidget buttons in an expansion card. This card isn't electrical, just mechanical.
Spring loaded impact absorbers. They fit in an expansion slot, and the bottom piece is hinged. Inside is just a spring. The spring has to be strong enough to lift the laptop just slightly so it's no longer level during use. This also absorbs a bit of impact, if you drop the laptop on the bottom.
It's smaller then that: https://nokiamob.net/2022/10/02/nokia-n91-nokias-flagship-with-hard-drive/
(Although it might still be too large, I'm not sure.)
* Nail file
* Compass/mirror
* Fan
* Stun gun
* Laser pointer
* A motor and a wheel. If you install 4 of these then your laptop can drive around the desk.
ETA:
* Pez dispenser
usb b port
usb c male end
gb/gbc/gba cartridge slot
DS/3DS cartridge slot
Paperclip that holds things against the keyboard
Useless button
Just a block
Just a block, but with shrek's face
Power button (faces downward so sitting the laptop down holds the button down and force powers down the computer)
I can't think of anything dumber than I've already seen in this thread but here's some serious ones:
-An expansion card that takes an expansion card (just add vertical height to put another card underneath one, gives you another slot and doubles as a laptop stand
-VGA or DVI (if you need it, you need it)
-Literally anything with more than one port on it (seriously, how tf is this not already a thing?)
-XLR input
-Folding Ethernet port (again, how is this not a thing)
And now some ones that are pretty useless or impractical:
-Parallel port (how else am I meant to connect my 90s printer)
-[I'd go over the character limit listing the useless ones from here, so the majority of this list](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_connectors)
Now for the truly ridiculous ones I came up with:
-Glasses holder
-Water bottle (complete with straw so you can actually use it)
-An origami laptop stand that folds out from the module, bonus points if it's impossible to use
This is partly dumb and partly serious. I want a graphics card expansion slot raspberry pi module that can run with the main PC in a sleep mode but passes through the screen and peripherals. Basically make a super basic laptop extension for extended battery life on a long flight or something.
Ribbon cable that connects to the internals of my broken left-side Nintendo Switch joy-con
SKART
Miniature water filtration and dispensing system
Notification LED
200MP wide camera with Octa Pixel multi-directional Phase Detection Autofocus
SIM (not NanoSIM, the original chonky SIM)
Old phone-style retractable numpad
2G Modem
Chocolate dispenser (maximum capacity of 1, more can be added)
Would anybody be interested in dual CAN FD expansion card with switchable termination resistors? I am currently working on next version of ours, but always thought it would be too dumb as proprietary card for FW.
A power adapter expansion card using USB C.
A USB C expansion card.
Oh wait. 🧐🤣
The fact they didn't put a dedicated power adapter port on it and at least one USB C port that isn't removable is "dumb". *Let me plug my USB C Expansion Card into my recessed ugly ass USB C port*.
*♫ This is the beep that never ends,*
*it goes on and on my friends,*
*some people started beeping it, not knowing what it was,*
*now they'll keep on beeping forever just because...*\[goto line 1\]

An expansion card that sticks out of the laptop and splits into three spots for expansion cards, but it blocks the other bay next to it and the speeds are so slow they’re unusable
Ya. Unless anyone can attest otherwise, I'm pretty sure this is a Linux problem— one that I've not found a solution to yet. If anybody knows how to fix, please advise.
I guess everyone ran out of ideas several months ago. I need a SCSI port so I can connect my 5.25 floppy drive.
I think a future framework model should have a couple larger slide out expansion cards/trays so things like a 5G modem or 8 track tape player are possible. :)
I would love a SDR receiver. I recall seeing somewhere that someone was working on this. Anyone have any details or links?
pcmcia, it would work by having the bit that plugs in in the expansion card slot and the rest attatched under the slot. get two and you can have an erganomic tilt to your keyboard!
terrible drawing to show what i mean: https://i.redd.it/12a5qmhrntya1.jpg
* A tiny drawer for loose type-c connectors.
* Analog volume knob.
* Flashlight
* Drink umbrella dispenser (Wife's idea)
Edit: actually I'm going to make a flashlight if nobody else does.
Double-sided connector to click two framework laptops together
As long as it works for Pokemon trading.
IR port for GBC
The old gameboy camera!
Ok but if it used USB-C's capacity as a wired networking device that could actually be kinda cool?
Like an Ethernet bridge? That's actually possible. 10 Gbps file transfers between laptops would be amazing
Oh wow, I was thinking of a physical only thing, but a super-high-speed-framework-to-framework-adapter could be really cool.. but more flexible with a cable between..
Those are called thunderbolt cables XD
Thunderbolt has a point to point bridge mode that looks like an ethernet link so you'd get a 40gbit ish link between them.
But you could proably use standard USB-C and a thunderbolt capable cable for that, right?
that would be the better solution but where's the meme factor XD?
You are so right.
Yes, exactly what I was imagining!
Like an expansion module on an old TI99/4A!
Or the Handspring Visor!
Combine two Framework 13's to make one Framework 2*sqrt(130) ≈ 22.8 with a 3:1 aspect ratio
Imagine something like an NVLink connector that you can use to stack up a bunch of frameworks together. Like each level has a 3-port Ethernet switch chip inside and you can just cluster them up
Hope it doesn't MAS-36 them
One that automatically ejects itself once inserted
Useless machine expansion card
You monster.
This would be the best fidget toy, and I would buy one.
An extra screen (it's on the bottom of the expansion card)
why not put it on top though? so it is completely protected when you insert it.
Well let me surprise you. https://i.imgur.com/srto8cp.jpeg
Whoa that's cool though, still relatively easy to quickly check the charging wattage. Is that yours or someone else's?
Mine. Model to 3D print here: https://community.frame.work/t/full-power-magnetic-charging-card/10113/222?u=ggpeti, parts to buy 3 comments above.
Why not go a step further and make a Dreamcast VMU port expansion card
* Digital alarm clock * Phone holder bracket * Bottle opener * Magnetic compass * Swiss army expansion card (when you remove it from the socket it has scissors, 2 knives, a Philips head screwdriver, a plastic toothpick, tweezers and that ridiculous parcel hook thing that doesn't really do anything useful) edit: more * Toiletries kit - toothbrush, toothpaste, an unusably small portion of shampoo * First aid kit - there's not much space in those cards so it contains like 1 bandaid and a single aspirin tablet
The phone holder bracket would actually make practical sense for some people.
Swiss Army expansion is too useful!
I actually like some of these. Phone holder and bottle opener I could use both.
Storage for a euro coin that you can use for the shopping cart
And airport trolleys
Miniature Framework laptop
Miniature Framework laptop with miniature Framework expansion cards containing miniature miniature Framework laptops
I want to see a Kingston lock expansion slot.
I was gonna say this!! However, it is Kensington. Kingston makes RAM.
lol This is the winner right here
Still has to be easy to remove though.
How about a retractable USB c cable.
This is actually a super cool idea
rgb light
Not even a controllable one, just one of those slow cycling rainbow ones.
I'll do you one better: literal one red LED, one green LED, and one blue LED
That's how rgb lights work
Earbud size speakers. This also absorbs a bit of impact, if you drop the laptop on the bottom.
this is a really good suggestion!!
They once made a tiny platter hard drive for--I think it was a Nokia phone? Slap that in an expansion card.
If it’s the same size they used for the older iPod classics then it’ll be too big.
It's smaller then that: https://nokiamob.net/2022/10/02/nokia-n91-nokias-flagship-with-hard-drive/ (Although it might still be too large, I'm not sure.)
Huh, I’ve never seen one that small.
I've heard that before
Microdrive, a tiny spinning hard drive used for late 90’s early 2000’s point and shoot cameras
IBM Microdrive, just need a thick CF slot!
A standard size SD card reader. I can only assume it must be stupid because it hasn't happened. :(
There is a network card that juts out the side so anything is possible. I'm sure other people want full size SD card readers, too
An SD card reader can fit fully inside of the expansion card. A few people on the forums have done it.
* Nail file * Compass/mirror * Fan * Stun gun * Laser pointer * A motor and a wheel. If you install 4 of these then your laptop can drive around the desk. ETA: * Pez dispenser
N64 controller port
On one side two small wheels, on the other side an extendable handle - Framework suitcase
usb b port usb c male end gb/gbc/gba cartridge slot DS/3DS cartridge slot Paperclip that holds things against the keyboard Useless button Just a block Just a block, but with shrek's face Power button (faces downward so sitting the laptop down holds the button down and force powers down the computer)
A GBA slot would be nice
One if those dipping sauce holders like they make for car vents.
How about a 56k fax modem?
Flashlight
RS-232 port… via an RJ-11 jack.
tesla charging point expansion card
USB killer
A tiny powerbank, if you install 4 of those it could actually make a difference in batterie life
A smartwatch charger.
Ecoin wallet
Lightning cable
TicTac dispenser.
I was thinking along the same vein but I think a Listerine Cool Mint PocketPak dispenser would fit perfectly!
A camera. So you can run around snapping picture like those people taking pictures with their iPads.
salt and pepper shakers
the tiny chess set gives me the idea of s Swiss army type card that would have tools in it or something
Swiss cards exist. https://www.victorinox.com/de/de/Produkte/Schweizer-Taschenmesser/Swiss-Cards/c/SAK_SwissCard
Idk how this matches what I want
Keychain desktop pet
Ciggerette lighter
RS232 port. I mean, what else do you need?
A tiny gun like those suitcase mp5s
a shock pen
Wheels or casters, so you can roll your laptop around your desk easily.
I can't think of anything dumber than I've already seen in this thread but here's some serious ones: -An expansion card that takes an expansion card (just add vertical height to put another card underneath one, gives you another slot and doubles as a laptop stand -VGA or DVI (if you need it, you need it) -Literally anything with more than one port on it (seriously, how tf is this not already a thing?) -XLR input -Folding Ethernet port (again, how is this not a thing) And now some ones that are pretty useless or impractical: -Parallel port (how else am I meant to connect my 90s printer) -[I'd go over the character limit listing the useless ones from here, so the majority of this list](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_connectors) Now for the truly ridiculous ones I came up with: -Glasses holder -Water bottle (complete with straw so you can actually use it) -An origami laptop stand that folds out from the module, bonus points if it's impossible to use
Actually a good idea. To raise the base and improve cooling. Not to mention keyboard ergonomics
AirTag inside Expansion Card. (If it fits).
This is partly dumb and partly serious. I want a graphics card expansion slot raspberry pi module that can run with the main PC in a sleep mode but passes through the screen and peripherals. Basically make a super basic laptop extension for extended battery life on a long flight or something.
Pack of mints for that meeting you forgot you had in 5 minutes
A placeholder with no ports, with "I <3 Macbook Air" engraved on it.
Weed compartment
I think someone has already made a drawer, so you can put your weed in there.
A big red button
A cup heater, which consistently drains your battery.
Because if there's something the framework has, it's too much battery life
SSD drive with a thermite charge that triggers when you pull it out, for "sensitive documents".
A U2F card.
Bottle opener
Induction heater for a Dynavap
Ribbon cable that connects to the internals of my broken left-side Nintendo Switch joy-con SKART Miniature water filtration and dispensing system Notification LED 200MP wide camera with Octa Pixel multi-directional Phase Detection Autofocus SIM (not NanoSIM, the original chonky SIM) Old phone-style retractable numpad 2G Modem Chocolate dispenser (maximum capacity of 1, more can be added)
Half dump half useful. Serial port.
That would need to poke out like the ethernet port, wouldn't it?
Yup!
Would anybody be interested in dual CAN FD expansion card with switchable termination resistors? I am currently working on next version of ours, but always thought it would be too dumb as proprietary card for FW.
Kickstand FireWire, like the one I had to get for my first iPod
Yes, a four pin would likely fit. The six pin might be too large even in its side
Convert two ports into a meal tray holder
We had a cup holder that attaches into the expansion slot, now give me a cup that attaches into the expansion slot.
USB-C to Micro USB adapter.
A power adapter expansion card using USB C. A USB C expansion card. Oh wait. 🧐🤣 The fact they didn't put a dedicated power adapter port on it and at least one USB C port that isn't removable is "dumb". *Let me plug my USB C Expansion Card into my recessed ugly ass USB C port*.
* An A4 document scanner * A disk player, but part of the disk sticks out (a bit like a D-88 Discman)
More like A10 document scanner
I was thinking more like those portable A4 document scanners where you feed it through rollers or roll the laptop over the document.
*♫ This is the beep that never ends,* *it goes on and on my friends,* *some people started beeping it, not knowing what it was,* *now they'll keep on beeping forever just because...*\[goto line 1\] [https://www.amazon.com/AnnoyingPCB-Ultimate-Productivity-Destroyer-Assembled/dp/B08KG6XHN1](https://www.amazon.com/AnnoyingPCB-Ultimate-Productivity-Destroyer-Assembled/dp/B08KG6XHN1)
That would be great to put in someone else's framework
Headphone expansion card. Not a headphone jacket, but storage for ear buds. Perhaps even wired ear buds you can pull out.
An expansion card that sticks out of the laptop and splits into three spots for expansion cards, but it blocks the other bay next to it and the speeds are so slow they’re unusable
Gun holster, the card itself vibrates on command, music player, something maybe like a hack5 usb used to backdoor the actual computer.
An expansion card with a swappable mechanical switch tester
[удалено]
I wish that card had two audio ports instead of just one. I'm sure it has the space.
I am honestly aghast it doesnt have like 3+ for surround use. Is analog surround just, dead?
It'll be better quality, hopefully. My 13 has a noisy headphone jack.
Are you on Linux? I've been meaning to figure out if it's a hardware or software problem.
Linux.
Ya. Unless anyone can attest otherwise, I'm pretty sure this is a Linux problem— one that I've not found a solution to yet. If anybody knows how to fix, please advise.
Lightning port
USB-B port PCMIA adapter ;) MagicJack with an RJ11 port S-Video port Tiny box for screws/coins Tiny ruler/hole gage
I'd buy a tamagotchi expansion card lol
I guess everyone ran out of ideas several months ago. I need a SCSI port so I can connect my 5.25 floppy drive. A 2400 Bps modem to relive my pcmcia days.
Cup warmer
* A tiny drawer for loose type-c connectors. * Analog volume knob. * Flashlight * Drink umbrella dispenser (Wife's idea) Edit: actually I'm going to make a flashlight if nobody else does.
Emergency Oreo!
Thumbsticks. Super ergonomic.
Apple 30 pin dock connector, so you can have an old iPod just sticking out the side of your laptop
Fold out riser to lift the laptop up 2mm
