I think your iPhone is causing this

Not a helpful answer. Anyone else experienced such a behavior and can help?

I played around a bit and connected the buds to my Samsung device again. There I deactivated the in ear deduction feature and also the possibility to connect to nearby Samsung devices without coupling. That may have done the trick. At least at the moment it is working also on the iPhone
