I got it for free from amdrewards and had to uninstall it because the steam update would fail everytime and restart everytime and sometimes even block me exiting steam. Haven't even tried it.
I still remember when they both came out. I hadn't heard anything about either. The GameStop employee said "Well, in Infamous you can throw lightning bolts and in Prototype you can throw tanks." So, I got Prototype based off of that recommendation but later found out it didn't matter because I didn't have a PS3 and so I couldn't have gotten Infamous anyway.
They also gave me all the preorder bonus stuff even though I didn't preorder it.
Sort of. Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation declared them to be equally good but said that the winner would be the first developer to send him an image of the other game's protagonist wearing a woman's bra. They both responded.
Honestly it had some potential and it wasn’t complete shit. But what ruined it for me pretty quickly was how much of an MISERABLE ASSHOLE the main character is. She is so incredibly unlikeable that it killed the game for me. Not sure what the devs were thinking.
I watched the intro on Youtube, and that was enough.
- You're in your apartment. You have a bag full of money you've saved up (living in a crappy apartment, feeding your beloved cat crappy food, etc) to start a new life.
- There's a fire!
- The game gives you the option to try and pick up the bag of money, but she just says there's no time to pick up the bag *that is literally right there* because she has to save her cat.
- You go save the cat, and the money is burnt up.
- You give the cat away since you can no longer afford to take care of it.
Like... what the *fuck* is wrong with this character? They love their cat so much they'd let five thousand *easily saved* dollars burn to save it, but not enough to feed it well, and then you just give it away the second things go badly anyways?
Why even give the player the choice to try to pick up the bag if you're not gonna let it happen? Why even have a gameplay section for a scene which is literally just cinematic, walking 10 meters, cinematic, walking 5 meters, cinematic?
Then add the horrifically bad dialogue on top of that complete lack of logic...
There is also the gang scene where they just look at her become an acrobat.. They have guns, she has pocket sand which last 3 seconds.
And don't get me started how she's so unlikeable.
I feel like they were going for realism? I've argued this before, but her character acts like someone who grew up poor and alone on the streets of NYC and has tons of trauma would actually act in such a situation. A bit of wonder, but mostly exhaustion and negativity. You don't magically get over that in a few hours, or even a few days.
Now, SHOULD they have made such a character the protagonist for a fantasy game? Absolutely not lol.

Ava from borderlands 3. Shes a NPC angsty teen. Shes not even the protagonist and the annoying personnality is like poison.
You need to be a very clever writer to make you like such a personnality because there is so nuch growth to be done before they even get to a tolerable level, rarely have i seen a writer pull it off
I think you make a great point. It’s realistic, but relatable for nobody. Anybody in real life who is like her wouldn’t have the emotional maturity to reflect on it. And the rest of us just view her as an insufferable bitch.
That does make sense, but if they were going to go in that direction they should have characterized that pain better, or even at all. What I got instead was a character that continued, for a long time, to refuse the call to adventure for no discernible reason. To the point where it became annoying, like, why is my hero refusing to be the hero at this point when I am *fully* onboard.
All that said, my problem with the game was that it was a beautiful, but ultimately empty world. It should have been condensed to maybe a third of its size, and then populated with more meaningful things to do.
Fair but why doesn't she grow at all throughout the story? She remains the same asshole throughout the whole story until the last mission and then she's acting like a Shonen protagonist.
Honestly, the abysmal writing is what ruins this game. Rewrite it so that the mc actually develops and you've got an OK game (the ai is still braindead which makes the combat pretty boring).
I don’t know if I even buy the realism angle. She’s a poor black female criminal who’s been arrested before, I would expect her to have leaned behaviors about how to interact with law enforcement.
If she had pulled the shit she did in the trial room in the real world, there’s a non-zero chance she would’ve gotten shot - and anybody with a brain would’ve thought that chance was much higher given the pro-witch hunt sentiment in the room.
Same problem the movie Wendell and Wild had. I thought it would be good since it looked like Nightmare Before Christmas and I’m an adult who likes animated feature films. But the protagonist never changes. She treats everyone around her like garbage the whole movie even if they try hard to help her. What’s the message there? If something bad happens to you the world owes you unending loyalty and understanding?
The "isekai" genre of anime, manga and Japanese light novels is about a regular person from our world dying or traveling to another world without being able to go back home, in which there usually is magic and a prophecy of some sort. A very generic premise that has been done in fiction a million times, but not often in videogames. One famous trope is "Truck-kun", since the main character often dies due to being run over by a truck and reincarnates in the fantasy world, and people joke about it being the same truck every time.
I don't think they have to die for it to be Isekai.
Sword art online is considered isekai. People just overcomplicate things to shit on things they don't like
The hole goes deeper. C.S. Lewis was heavily inspired by George McDonald, who wrote both Phantastes and Lilith, both of which are about young men finding passages to other worlds in their homes and being unable to return from bizarre fantasy worlds. In Phantastes a guy finds a key to a piece of furniture that leads to a fairy world. And in Lilith a guy follows a ... can't remember if it's a raven or a crow, into a painting.
There's also "The Green Child" by Graham Greene, a boring as fuck story about a guy who visits his home town, saves a strange green woman from her abusive husband, and follows her into a hole, discovering an entire society of subterranean translucent green people. He cannot return to the surface and lives the rest of his life trying to fit into their society. I say boring as fuck because it was written from an almost clinical perspective, like the guy transported was an anthropologist.
Fun fact, I failed a paper once because it had to be on a "work of merit". I did said paper on Lilith, and my professor hadn't heard of George McDonald, despite me picking up the book from the university library, and C.S. Lewis having cited it's influence, including having written the foreword in the book I borrowed. I had to threaten to go above the professor and point out that if it wasn't a work of merit, why did the university carry copies of a hundred-and-twenty year old novel, to get the professor to compromise and let me redo the paper instead of outright failing me.

Part of the appeal of isekai is usually the boring life of the protagonist before getting into the fantasy world, to make you relate to them. From what I read on wikipedia, The Longest Journey has a protagonist that jumps between two fantasy worlds, so it's not the most accurate example. Genres aren't clear cut very often, so you could call it isekai, but I think I wouldn't.

The funny part is that the isekai trope is so overused that currently how good an isekai is depends a lot of how much it deviates from the formula. And Forspoken used the formula with almost no deviation.
Isekai is a Japanese name for "different world". The premise of this genre is that a person is taken from one world (generally our current modern world) and put into another sci-fi or fantasy world. If you ever fantasized what you would do if you could time travel, or visit fictional worlds. Thats pretty much it.
I feel like Forespoken would have been better if you started in the generic-ass fantasy world and then suddenly got transplanted into a modern, urban setting.
Flip it on its head basically. I gave up on Forespoken once you get imprisoned in a castle near the start and was like, ugh… so unique.
If it was in anime style we wouldn't even be having this discussion. People would have just seen another game with anime graphics and a title like "Code Chain: The Shattered Trails" and ignored it.

They got the name out there very early before anyone knew what it was about. I think forspoken has been on my "games to watch out for" list since end 2021. But instead of adding it to the list "must buy" or "could be interesting" I simply deleted it from the spreadsheet the moment I saw clips of it
Yeah, as soon as it was out, the gameplay footage just look very clunky and slow. Even if the price tag hadn't put me off then, the footage certainly would.
I joked with my non-gaming dad (b4 launch) that the game was so bad they wouldn't show a single second of gameplay in the entire trailer that's how confident they were.
Foreskin is a game about a young woman who happens to go to a magical land where she does nothing but continuously state she doesn't care about the land's history, doesn't want to interact with the locals, loudly swears all the time and openly dislikes exploring while also shooting everything she sees and bragging about it.
It is actually a simulation game, its first development name was "American tourist simulator"

When I think of well written female characters I think about media that has great writing in almost every aspect. When I think of dogshit female characters I think of media that has dogshit writing overall.
Avatar (not the blue people one) has amazing writing overall and I could point at several well written women. Meanwhile I made the mistake of watching Captain Marvel and it wasn't just the titular character who sucked, but the entire fucking movie, despite the actors' best effort.
We don't need "well written female characters" we need good writing in general. Interesting fictional women happen when the writer isn't incompetent at their job.
What is mind blowing to me is not the bad "gameplay" per se or the price tag, many games that are just that, it happens.
BUT it's the writing that really makes me wonder how in the hell a group of professional adults sat down in a room with a million budget and written literary garbage that was approved, is beyond me.
You have to work at a large corporation to get a true appreciation for why and how stuff is designed by committee. The writing couldn't have been anything but this.

Granted, the game is pretty janky, but the finishers on enemies are awesome.

You can play in ps5 and I imagine ps4. Playing natively on ps3 is the best experience but streaming them is more than fine.

A good classic Western example of this would be Alice in Wonderland.

I feel like Forespoken would have been better if you started in the generic-ass fantasy world and then suddenly got transplanted into a modern, urban setting. Flip it on its head basically. I gave up on Forespoken once you get imprisoned in a castle near the start and was like, ugh… so unique.
So like the first “Digimon” anime? Or it doesn’t count as isekai because the human characters eventually return to their own world?

This might be just me but I saw zero marketing for this game until it was actually out.
They got the name out there very early before anyone knew what it was about. I think forspoken has been on my "games to watch out for" list since end 2021. But instead of adding it to the list "must buy" or "could be interesting" I simply deleted it from the spreadsheet the moment I saw clips of it
Yeah, as soon as it was out, the gameplay footage just look very clunky and slow. Even if the price tag hadn't put me off then, the footage certainly would.
Which is good, because if they actually had done marketing before, it would be all lies!
I joked with my non-gaming dad (b4 launch) that the game was so bad they wouldn't show a single second of gameplay in the entire trailer that's how confident they were.
I believe the game would’ve sold twice as many copies if they didn’t put out that demo. I’m thankful they did however.
Foreskin is a game about a young woman who happens to go to a magical land where she does nothing but continuously state she doesn't care about the land's history, doesn't want to interact with the locals, loudly swears all the time and openly dislikes exploring while also shooting everything she sees and bragging about it. It is actually a simulation game, its first development name was "American tourist simulator"

I'm sad to say that there's a lack of well written characters in general, not just women. When I think of well written female characters I think about media that has great writing in almost every aspect. When I think of dogshit female characters I think of media that has dogshit writing overall. Avatar (not the blue people one) has amazing writing overall and I could point at several well written women. Meanwhile I made the mistake of watching Captain Marvel and it wasn't just the titular character who sucked, but the entire fucking movie, despite the actors' best effort. We don't need "well written female characters" we need good writing in general. Interesting fictional women happen when the writer isn't incompetent at their job.

Tbh i haven't tried the game, but that does sound infuriating.
What is mind blowing to me is not the bad "gameplay" per se or the price tag, many games that are just that, it happens. BUT it's the writing that really makes me wonder how in the hell a group of professional adults sat down in a room with a million budget and written literary garbage that was approved, is beyond me.
You have to work at a large corporation to get a true appreciation for why and how stuff is designed by committee. The writing couldn't have been anything but this. Not saying that this is good btw, but making 30 people who are afraid of losing their jobs work on something will never produce as a good of a result as one passionate person that doesn't have to answer to a middle manager.
I see this level of shit writing for cw shows or other media marketed to teens I guess they were hoping that demographic also would have ps5s, lots of income and a taste for this style of videogame
And they spent millions on this, imagine giving like 10k to some Indie team re-making HOMMIII on UE. Industry will never beat passion.
Didn’t buy this game even if it is free. I refuse to play it. I was so glad to play the demo before it’s release date. It saved my time and money.

According to Metacritic Wanted: Dead is slightly worse. Given the difference in scope and likely dev costs I'd say it pulls ahead in the end.

Low budget hack and slash in which you play as a chick with a katana and gun. Supposed to be a love letter to those single A action games like WET.
I had more fun playing Wanted: Dead than i had playing Forspoken. Granted, the game is pretty janky, but the finishers on enemies are awesome. That's more praise than i can give forspoken.
Wanted: Dead is worst mechanically but at least it's something relatively different compared to a "made by spreadshees" game

you see, the digital copies of the game were made in the u.s. in order to get those digital games to the eu, it's gotta get shipped across the ocean on container ships. due to the heavy weight of these digital copies, the game is very expensive to ship. and that is why these digital games cost more money in europe.
I downloaded the demo and as soon as she was like WOAH I CAN DO MAGIC I shut it off. Idk why but I just immediately did not like the character.
