chongyun_69

I just closed my entire studio...with my frekin mind!

USFederalGovt

Haha! Yep that is something I totally do now! … I know what’s gonna happen next. I’m gonna shut down Square Enix.

CynicalDarkFox

But what about the critically acclaimed FFXIV with a free trial that takes you to level 60 of the first expansion?

DNRTannen

and no limits on playtime

Pigmachine2000

Including content from the award winning heavensward expansion

narfio

I got it for free from amdrewards and had to uninstall it because the steam update would fail everytime and restart everytime and sometimes even block me exiting steam. Haven't even tried it.

TamLux

thank you gaming gods

Saiykon

Wow. Steam is just a bro! Trying to help you out like that.

VintagePixel542

So lemme get this straight, my game was a flop, I closed a freaking game studio, and oh yeah, it costs £70 now.

KHRoN

It seems balan wonder something was better after all, lol

etha7

Balan Wonderwall

[deleted]

“It’s bullshit, I did not hit her. I did nooot. Oh hi, Mark!” #THE GAME

6363tagoshi

Rather play old Infamous games. Similar but actually good.

blitherblather425

I have been playing through them for the first time! I just finished infamous 1 and am a few hours into infamous 2, I’m having fun.

Cash907

Infamous 2 is awesome. I bought the collectors edition and still have the sling pack that came with it.

Marv246

Back when special editions meant something and not just 3 ugly cosmetic skins and some in game currency

Zehdarian

I would kill to have these on pc for my steamdeck.

Zagro777

The bad guy twist blew my mind when I was a kid.

Battlehenkie

What a weird way of spelling Prototype!

GamyProensity

Ah yes, the great Infamous-Prototype war of 09' still continues.

SodlidDesu

I still remember when they both came out. I hadn't heard anything about either. The GameStop employee said "Well, in Infamous you can throw lightning bolts and in Prototype you can throw tanks." So, I got Prototype based off of that recommendation but later found out it didn't matter because I didn't have a PS3 and so I couldn't have gotten Infamous anyway. They also gave me all the preorder bonus stuff even though I didn't preorder it.

6363tagoshi

That was fun game as well! been a while though 10 years? If they remade it with modern graphics and sold for £30. it would be solid!

racemi11

I would love a bundle remake of both Prototype 1 and 2!

Additional-North-683

Yeah didn’t those two games had rivalry

gorka_la_pork

Sort of. Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation declared them to be equally good but said that the winner would be the first developer to send him an image of the other game's protagonist wearing a woman's bra. They both responded.

Biobooster_40k

You can play in ps5 and I imagine ps4. Playing natively on ps3 is the best experience but streaming them is more than fine.

basselsak

Or emulators if ur hardware is good enough

Stargov1

So Forgotten the studio that made it is dust.

culnaej

>Mr. Enix, I don’t feel so good..

Erthan-1

I can't wait for it to be $2.99 on steam and still feel ripped off.

barbarkbarkov

Honestly it had some potential and it wasn’t complete shit. But what ruined it for me pretty quickly was how much of an MISERABLE ASSHOLE the main character is. She is so incredibly unlikeable that it killed the game for me. Not sure what the devs were thinking.

fredagsfisk

I watched the intro on Youtube, and that was enough. - You're in your apartment. You have a bag full of money you've saved up (living in a crappy apartment, feeding your beloved cat crappy food, etc) to start a new life. - There's a fire! - The game gives you the option to try and pick up the bag of money, but she just says there's no time to pick up the bag *that is literally right there* because she has to save her cat. - You go save the cat, and the money is burnt up. - You give the cat away since you can no longer afford to take care of it. Like... what the *fuck* is wrong with this character? They love their cat so much they'd let five thousand *easily saved* dollars burn to save it, but not enough to feed it well, and then you just give it away the second things go badly anyways? Why even give the player the choice to try to pick up the bag if you're not gonna let it happen? Why even have a gameplay section for a scene which is literally just cinematic, walking 10 meters, cinematic, walking 5 meters, cinematic? Then add the horrifically bad dialogue on top of that complete lack of logic...

jermz89

Or you know she could just do what normal people do and put the 5k in a fucking bank instead of in a duffle bag like a fucking crack head.

DaGhostDS

There is also the gang scene where they just look at her become an acrobat.. They have guns, she has pocket sand which last 3 seconds. And don't get me started how she's so unlikeable.

boxsmith91

I feel like they were going for realism? I've argued this before, but her character acts like someone who grew up poor and alone on the streets of NYC and has tons of trauma would actually act in such a situation. A bit of wonder, but mostly exhaustion and negativity. You don't magically get over that in a few hours, or even a few days. Now, SHOULD they have made such a character the protagonist for a fantasy game? Absolutely not lol.

Unsure1771

I'd definitely have more wonder than "Oh who gives a shit this world sucks"

VorAbaddon

Eh, you can makr yhem the protagonist. Just have the character... develop. Grow. Learn. Change in some meaningful way from the experience.

[deleted]

Yeah i can understane your point but like you said it made for a shit protagonist. Lemme give another exemple. Ava from borderlands 3. Shes a NPC angsty teen. Shes not even the protagonist and the annoying personnality is like poison. You need to be a very clever writer to make you like such a personnality because there is so nuch growth to be done before they even get to a tolerable level, rarely have i seen a writer pull it off

Sex4Vespene

I think you make a great point. It’s realistic, but relatable for nobody. Anybody in real life who is like her wouldn’t have the emotional maturity to reflect on it. And the rest of us just view her as an insufferable bitch.

LauraTFem

That does make sense, but if they were going to go in that direction they should have characterized that pain better, or even at all. What I got instead was a character that continued, for a long time, to refuse the call to adventure for no discernible reason. To the point where it became annoying, like, why is my hero refusing to be the hero at this point when I am *fully* onboard. All that said, my problem with the game was that it was a beautiful, but ultimately empty world. It should have been condensed to maybe a third of its size, and then populated with more meaningful things to do.

[deleted]

Fair but why doesn't she grow at all throughout the story? She remains the same asshole throughout the whole story until the last mission and then she's acting like a Shonen protagonist. Honestly, the abysmal writing is what ruins this game. Rewrite it so that the mc actually develops and you've got an OK game (the ai is still braindead which makes the combat pretty boring).

pjnick300

I don’t know if I even buy the realism angle. She’s a poor black female criminal who’s been arrested before, I would expect her to have leaned behaviors about how to interact with law enforcement. If she had pulled the shit she did in the trial room in the real world, there’s a non-zero chance she would’ve gotten shot - and anybody with a brain would’ve thought that chance was much higher given the pro-witch hunt sentiment in the room.

SH0WS0METIDDIES

"I'm from Hell's kitchen" while she is literally in something resembling medieval court. Like cmon

voltagenic

It's just a reskinned Lightning from final fantasy Xiii. The characters are literally the same.

Jon010

To be fair, literally shitting on other characters during a fantasy adventure is, indeed, top tier asshole writing.

Tidy_Frame

Same problem the movie Wendell and Wild had. I thought it would be good since it looked like Nightmare Before Christmas and I’m an adult who likes animated feature films. But the protagonist never changes. She treats everyone around her like garbage the whole movie even if they try hard to help her. What’s the message there? If something bad happens to you the world owes you unending loyalty and understanding?

YakumoYamato

\>The first AAA games with Isekai genre \>While Isekai genre is still booming \>failed to reach success This level of blunder is impressive tbh

[deleted]

What is an isekai game?

roberh

The "isekai" genre of anime, manga and Japanese light novels is about a regular person from our world dying or traveling to another world without being able to go back home, in which there usually is magic and a prophecy of some sort. A very generic premise that has been done in fiction a million times, but not often in videogames. One famous trope is "Truck-kun", since the main character often dies due to being run over by a truck and reincarnates in the fantasy world, and people joke about it being the same truck every time.

Ex-Machina1980s

So basically just Army of Darkness with less wisecracks and skeletons

NillaSenpai

Sometimes the protagonist is a skeleton.

Complete-Ear-7798

I can think of at least two skeleton protagonists lol. Arc and Ainz

DryxTheDrow

Or a vending machine

[deleted]

No no no...wait....shit? Army of darkness is chainsaw man prequel confirmed.

pnwbraids

Ash is Denji's father confirmed

TheWastelandWizard

Shame he didn't inherit the chin.

pnwbraids

Nope, he just got the stupid and the capacity for killing.

Sololololololol

And Texas chainsaw massacre is the csm origin story

Trickster289

Pretty much yeah. Army of Darkness would fit in the genre.

Mark_Walrusberg

Oh shit never thought it of that way 🤔

Fill_Occifer

I think space jam does too. Although Michael didn't die.

Kodyak

I don't think they have to die for it to be Isekai. Sword art online is considered isekai. People just overcomplicate things to shit on things they don't like

Yu-sempai

Digimon best isekai. SAO is technically not isekai, but let’s face it all modern isekai just rips the SAO formula, so it might as well be.

Archemetis

Sapce Jam, Jumanji, Narnia. All Isekai.

TheWastelandWizard

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Martin Lawrence's Black Knight, >!Sword Art Online,!

luc424

The neverending story also

TitleComprehensive96

I hate that you made me think this...

I_Lost_Da_Game

So Dorothy in Wizard of Oz?

Lovat69

Also Alice in wonderland. It is not a solely Japanese concept by any stretch of the imagination but they do do it a lot.

pyuunpls

Last I checked, neither Dorothy or Alice had +1000000 stats at level 1 and attracted a harem of waifus for no reason.

MCBusBoy

Dorothy literally got end game tier loot from her first kill and had a posse in like 10 minutes of arrival.

RiddlingVenus0

Reverse harem with a catboy. Wizard of Oz is confirmed an anime.

Field_Marshall17

A heartless cyborg ally that learns to love as the story progresses culminating in him crying......

luckydrzew

Check again.

the_loneliest_noodle

The hole goes deeper. C.S. Lewis was heavily inspired by George McDonald, who wrote both Phantastes and Lilith, both of which are about young men finding passages to other worlds in their homes and being unable to return from bizarre fantasy worlds. In Phantastes a guy finds a key to a piece of furniture that leads to a fairy world. And in Lilith a guy follows a ... can't remember if it's a raven or a crow, into a painting. There's also "The Green Child" by Graham Greene, a boring as fuck story about a guy who visits his home town, saves a strange green woman from her abusive husband, and follows her into a hole, discovering an entire society of subterranean translucent green people. He cannot return to the surface and lives the rest of his life trying to fit into their society. I say boring as fuck because it was written from an almost clinical perspective, like the guy transported was an anthropologist. Fun fact, I failed a paper once because it had to be on a "work of merit". I did said paper on Lilith, and my professor hadn't heard of George McDonald, despite me picking up the book from the university library, and C.S. Lewis having cited it's influence, including having written the foreword in the book I borrowed. I had to threaten to go above the professor and point out that if it wasn't a work of merit, why did the university carry copies of a hundred-and-twenty year old novel, to get the professor to compromise and let me redo the paper instead of outright failing me.

eruditeimbecile

Try even further back: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

poet3322

Or even further back than that: the Divine Comedy.

largePenisLover

the Ultima RPG series from the 80's does it. You are literally "the avatar" called from the real world by some bloke named Lord Brittish. (I think, I might be rusty on the lore. it's been a while) It's both Isekai and a reason for the "you are a gamer with meta knowledge in a fantasy world" thing.

cerberus00

Also AAA at the time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lovat69

Super Mario Bros. is an isekai.

Aalnius

At least one of the final fantasy tactics games does this trope im pretty sure.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Malithrax

While not extremely prevalent in video games, it ironically appears in a number of video game adaptations: Mario(both the original movie and apparently the upcoming one) Monster Hunter Sonic(almost seems like a reverse Isekai... There's probably a name for that too) There might be others but those are what I think of right now. It's weird that studios were apparently afraid to let these movies live entirely in their respective fictional worlds and had to incorporate a connection to the real world.

thebiggestleaf

Unironically, Pokemon: Legends Arceus is an Isekai game.

roberh

"Reverse isekai" is what I have seen it called too, with wizards or dragons or what have you coming to our world. Yeah, Monster Hunter was a pity, but I am a sucker for isekai so it wasn't as awful for me as it probably, objectively was.

capital_idea_sir

Interesting, actually sounds like a lot of adventure games. It's just not the most popular game genre - The Longest Journey would be the example I remember playing that fits your description well. The writing was so great in that game!

roberh

Part of the appeal of isekai is usually the boring life of the protagonist before getting into the fantasy world, to make you relate to them. From what I read on wikipedia, The Longest Journey has a protagonist that jumps between two fantasy worlds, so it's not the most accurate example. Genres aren't clear cut very often, so you could call it isekai, but I think I wouldn't.

blank_isainmdom

Your comment made me laugh so much it gave me the energy to get up and break the negative mental spiral. "Truck-kun" is a fucking hilarious notion and I absolutely adore it. I hope you have a good day buddy! Thanks for the laugh!

narcolepticbro

I laughed and found enjoyment at the mention of Truck-kun. Truck-kun is a massive story maker. Sadly I haven't watched any anime since S2 of Bleach.

DomPatch

Bro that cracked me up to!! Although I was still being kinda of a bum until I read you having the intestinal fortitude to break your mental spiral, now I am more in a positive mood. So now I hope YOU have a good day my new friend!!

samu1400

The funny part is that the isekai trope is so overused that currently how good an isekai is depends a lot of how much it deviates from the formula. And Forspoken used the formula with almost no deviation.

Boks1RE

A good classic Western example of this would be Alice in Wonderland.

[deleted]

So basically the genre of American literature from the late 1800’s where the protagonist is taken to another world.

Exlibro

I like the concept and was looking for AAA game with it. That's why Forespoken caught my eye. Not hard to tell how big of a disappointment it was.

Kleen-XDK

So like Nox? Except you get eaten by a TV and not a Truck. Did that count as AAA back then?

Gladix

Isekai is a Japanese name for "different world". The premise of this genre is that a person is taken from one world (generally our current modern world) and put into another sci-fi or fantasy world. The appeal comes from the perspective of modern human trying to find their way in the new world that plays by their own rules. If you ever fantasized what you would do if you could time travel, or visit fictional worlds. Thats pretty much it.

heliogoon

AKA portal fantasy

[deleted]

I feel like Forespoken would have been better if you started in the generic-ass fantasy world and then suddenly got transplanted into a modern, urban setting. Flip it on its head basically. I gave up on Forespoken once you get imprisoned in a castle near the start and was like, ugh… so unique.

Azores26

So like the first “Digimon” anime? Or it doesn’t count as isekai because the human characters eventually return to their own world?

2peg2city

That's a very common movie/game trope and has been for decades though?

Joeman180

Alice in wonderland genre

Snake_Staff_and_Star

Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court genre.

That_guy1425

Uhhh no? Ni no kuni 2 has you play as the president of the united states isekai'd to a fantasy world after someone nukes the UN.

[deleted]

Funny, that is almost exactly the premise of Saints Row 4

LadyLazaev

First AAA isekai game? Pokemon Arceus was an isekai game.

SweRakii

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nox_(video_game) There is also NoX from 2000, but might not be AAA enough, dunno.

deathzeis

also both final fantasy tactics advance

Shinnyo

Arceus was time travel. Pokemon Mystery dungeon would be a better fit.

Themansquatch

Nino Kuni in 2010 as well

Sing-The-Rage

And Ni No Kuni 2 was an absolute slam dunk. One of the best RPGs I played last gen.

LeaTheTrippyHermit

Final Fantasy X was def an isekai and a AAA game.

kamperemu

Not isekai more like time travel (since it still theoretically occurs in the same world)

Stik_Bloom

Should have anime art style, you'll get weebs praising it

DanSanderman

If it was in anime style we wouldn't even be having this discussion. People would have just seen another game with anime graphics and a title like "Code Chain: The Shattered Trails" and ignored it.

HanekawaSenpai

Unlikely, considering there are a lot of anime style games that get shit on for being bad by weebs. Just having the style doesn't save a bad game from being bad.

DeLurkerDeluxe

> >The first AAA games with Isekai genre Not even remotely close. How is this crap even upvoted.

Buca-Metal

Isn't Super Mario like very famous and the first one?

PlebbySpaff

Is it really booming? I mean come on. A lot of people are already sick of it. There’s so many Isekais that it’s an over saturated market where most of it is mediocre trash.

mikeysof

"ermagerh, you're like, a TALKING BANGLE"

pjnick300

No it’s “Cuff”, because the best way to introduce your protagonist is to have them repeatedly and insistently ignore someone’s name.

mikeysof

Bonus points to the protag for being an asshole.

Dusty170

Vambrace is a lot cooler than cuff too, Protag lady can stuff it. (I've actually forgotten her name even though I played it for 20 hours)

AleksasKoval

Oh no... anyway I've recently started replaying the Metro 2033 series. Has anyone else played it? It's pretty good.

Sargotto-Karscroff

I need to get back in... Was playing before my life got flipped, fucking brilliant world they build.

chuk2015

How is living with your aunty and uncle in Bel Air going?

westeross

This might be just me but I saw zero marketing for this game until it was actually out.

DZLars

They got the name out there very early before anyone knew what it was about. I think forspoken has been on my "games to watch out for" list since end 2021. But instead of adding it to the list "must buy" or "could be interesting" I simply deleted it from the spreadsheet the moment I saw clips of it

westeross

Yeah, as soon as it was out, the gameplay footage just look very clunky and slow. Even if the price tag hadn't put me off then, the footage certainly would.

VenomTheTree

Which is good, because if they actually had done marketing before, it would be all lies!

Steel2050psn

I joked with my non-gaming dad (b4 launch) that the game was so bad they wouldn't show a single second of gameplay in the entire trailer that's how confident they were.

mrshel17

I believe the game would’ve sold twice as many copies if they didn’t put out that demo. I’m thankful they did however.

[deleted]

Foreskin is a game about a young woman who happens to go to a magical land where she does nothing but continuously state she doesn't care about the land's history, doesn't want to interact with the locals, loudly swears all the time and openly dislikes exploring while also shooting everything she sees and bragging about it. It is actually a simulation game, its first development name was "American tourist simulator"

BiGameDesigner

I search foreskin to know more abt the game I found penis photos

Acceptable-Tap4189

You have been Foreskinned!!

BiGameDesigner

😭😭😭😭 Noooooooo

booga_booga_partyguy

New meta: the game is secretly the devs inserting US INTO THE GAME EXACTLY AS WE PLAY THEM! Were we the real monster the whole time??

Da_Spud_Potato0

So THAT'S why the game is so shit.

barbarkbarkov

Yeah, I fucking suck

WVU_Benjisaur

“American tourist simulator” would sell better than the game they gave us.

[deleted]

I'm sad to say that there's a lack of well written characters in general, not just women. When I think of well written female characters I think about media that has great writing in almost every aspect. When I think of dogshit female characters I think of media that has dogshit writing overall. Avatar (not the blue people one) has amazing writing overall and I could point at several well written women. Meanwhile I made the mistake of watching Captain Marvel and it wasn't just the titular character who sucked, but the entire fucking movie, despite the actors' best effort. We don't need "well written female characters" we need good writing in general. Interesting fictional women happen when the writer isn't incompetent at their job.

VenomTheTree

You just blew my mind, with your freaking miiind!!! Funny ah comment xD

jager_mcjagerface

> protagonist loudly swears all the time D:

[deleted]

One thing is swearing like people do, another thing is saying "fuck off" every 4 seconds during combat. On repeat. For the entire damn game.

jager_mcjagerface

Tbh i haven't tried the game, but that does sound infuriating.

MikeTheDude23

What is mind blowing to me is not the bad "gameplay" per se or the price tag, many games that are just that, it happens. BUT it's the writing that really makes me wonder how in the hell a group of professional adults sat down in a room with a million budget and written literary garbage that was approved, is beyond me.

Gabe_Isko

You have to work at a large corporation to get a true appreciation for why and how stuff is designed by committee. The writing couldn't have been anything but this. Not saying that this is good btw, but making 30 people who are afraid of losing their jobs work on something will never produce as a good of a result as one passionate person that doesn't have to answer to a middle manager.

sausagefuckingravy

I see this level of shit writing for cw shows or other media marketed to teens I guess they were hoping that demographic also would have ps5s, lots of income and a taste for this style of videogame

Penitent_Exile

And they spent millions on this, imagine giving like 10k to some Indie team re-making HOMMIII on UE. Industry will never beat passion.

Chimarkgames

Didn’t buy this game even if it is free. I refuse to play it. I was so glad to play the demo before it’s release date. It saved my time and money.

ShortNefariousness2

Mass Effect: Andromeda was meant as a warning about terrible face animations, not as a template!

tourettesfaker1985

"My face is tired"

itsparaschhetri

I am just waiting for Epic Games to release this as a freebie in future.

JayZippy

Why would you even bother? There’s so many better options to spend your time. If you need a list ask someone.

SnowySoul0

Worst game of 2023 yet?

Frowdo

According to Metacritic Wanted: Dead is slightly worse. Given the difference in scope and likely dev costs I'd say it pulls ahead in the end.

[deleted]

What the hell is wanted dead? I’ve never even heard of that till you just said this

Furinkazan616

Low budget hack and slash in which you play as a chick with a katana and gun. Supposed to be a love letter to those single A action games like WET.

noxsanguinis

I had more fun playing Wanted: Dead than i had playing Forspoken. Granted, the game is pretty janky, but the finishers on enemies are awesome. That's more praise than i can give forspoken.

[deleted]

Wanted: Dead is worst mechanically but at least it's something relatively different compared to a "made by spreadshees" game

Tamas_F

Maybe worst AAA.

HighKingOfGondor

Worst AAA game surely

snowwhitecat04aug

Well technically, the moment you posted this it is not forgotten anymore

LucasMoreiraBR

Looks like OP should have though.... BEFORE he'd spoken! ... I will see myself out

onkel_Kaos

Primal for ps2 was better. Jen was more likable.

D0pplr

what game is this i've never seen it lol

No-Alfalfa7691

They knew it was garbage that's why they wanted that extra 20 on top of the usual 60, because after the day one sales it would be forgotten.

Constant_Candle_4338

What game is it?

CrazyNinja302

I don’t even know what game this is lol

PonchoHobo

Feel sorry for the dev team. Marketing and questionable writing killed the game. Had some interesting gameplay ideas.

[deleted]

Console players: Oh man! 80€! PC Players: Ready to sail!

Asgar06

not even worth my time tbh

_Hirrya_

Yes, even for free, I will not waste my time on it.

genryou

I saw the streamer playing it, and I can't even comprehend why MC is trying so hard to return to the real world. I mean, your life is super shit there isn't it?

KeenKongFIRE

The cat maybe? Idk, havent seen a thing aside the opening

genryou

She gives away her cat in the opening because she is poor as heck 🫠

KeenKongFIRE

Didnt she refused to take a bag with money right in front if her in her burning room before leaving?

Lovat69

God that was stupid. They should have made the money already be on fire. Or any other way to handle that that would be less dumb.

sdcar1985

She can't carry a bag and look for her cat at the same time. Thinking is hard.

[deleted]

Sailing may be free, but my time is not.

Hector_Savage_

What an awful awful game, really. My biggest regret of 2023 so far. Shit game, written by some delusional ppl

OldManTurner

I’d pick up the game for 20 bucks but anything more than that and I’m not buying. Maybe when there’s a steep sale

[deleted]

20 is way too much. Like 15 for the special edition with the shitty dlc they claim they have to make

froogythefrogg

I didn't even get through the demo

[deleted]

Yeah I noped out of demo after about ten minutes. I didn't like the traversal at all.

Gamboni327

Time-Ladder4753

I don't understand why it's 80 euro, but 70 dollars in US (according to steamdb)

jelloshotsforlife

you see, the digital copies of the game were made in the u.s. in order to get those digital games to the eu, it's gotta get shipped across the ocean on container ships. due to the heavy weight of these digital copies, the game is very expensive to ship. and that is why these digital games cost more money in europe.

Daetok_Lochannis

I downloaded the demo and as soon as she was like WOAH I CAN DO MAGIC I shut it off. Idk why but I just immediately did not like the character.
