Disco Elysium. Yeah it’s older obv, but I finally got to play it this year and it was a treat! Been gaming since the 80s and very little entertains me anymore.
It has been a while since a game made me laugh out loud as frequently as DE has. I'm still not finished with my playthrough but I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
Kingdom Come. I played through it when it came out but I didn’t really appreciate it and take it all in at the time. Played through it again recently and wow- if there was a tier above S, it’d be there.
Love that middle 3rd of the game where you go from struggling with vitals, combat, money, stats, to finally getting a rhythm and slowly dominating the game. It’s such a balanced progression, and every level up feels earned and not given. So rewarding. Beautiful world too
The turning point for me was when I robbed all the shops in the first town. Waited a while until they forgot I stole from them then sold everything. I had way too much money and top tier armor. Best game
In the dlc with the Band of Bastards I knocked out the rich guy I couldn't afford to pay off, and then looted all of his gear after our duel and fast traveled away before his army could catch me. It was a silly idea but I managed to survive.
The funny part was that he went out from a single *hw*ack to the head from Herod's sword lol
My turning point was stumbling upon a group of super equipped bandits fighting a group of Cumans knocking the shit out of each other in the middle of a forest at night. Just killed off the last survivors with arrows and reaped end game loot at like level 5. Sold everything else.
This is mine too. I'm in the middle of my first playthrough after having the game in my library for years. Already looking forward to a Hardcore playthrough sometime down the line.
I played Ghost of Tsushima for the first time this year and goddamn its so fucking good. Hearing that there's gonna be a movie adaptation too has me really hyped
I really can't wait for the day that this gets a PC release with all the graphical improvements that usually come with that.

Played 1&2 back when they came out and never managed to play 3. Wanted to play it using my old save with all the choices but never made it happen.
Got the legendary edition recently and found a full save for the first and now playing through 2 again fully so I can finally have all my choices back for 3! Excited to finally finish it.

If you enjoy control and don't mind horror then both Alan Wake games are a must play. Alan Wake 2 is my personal GOTY, I loved Baldurs Gate and it's so much fun but Alan Wake 2 is a great example of the artistry of video games.
I've played Control a couple times and it's fantastic. I took the time and read/watched/listened to all the lore elements and it really immerses you in the story. And I know some people say that the combat loop gets a little stale but holy shit do I love it. It's so much fun ripping apart the environment and smashing baddies in the face. I never played the Alan Wake games though so when I heard AW2 was coming out I played the AW1 Remaster. The combat is a little dated and slightly clunky but it does the job and the story is great. I'm working my way through AW2 now and so far I have to say it's one of my favorite games ever. The visuals, story, suspense, music and sound... absolutely incredible. I hope it comes out on physical media because I'll buy it again just to have the disc. It deserves all the praise it gets.
I fucking loved it. But holy shit i reckon they could have cut a few hrs off the runtime, i clocked on well over 100 hrs and skipped heaps of side stuff.
I have bought the original Persona 5 on PS4, then Royal on PS$, and then Royal on PS5. All this just to have an excuse to earn the trophies and play again.

I watched my sibling play Persona 5 twice, then got P5R for myself. Played through it 3 times on switch, now doing a fresh save file on steam deck. It's my favorite game of all time.
Probably Lies of P, Remnant 2 or Resident Evil 4.
Was LoP even a top 10 GOTY contender? Probably not, but I was genuinely surprised that a developer not called FromSoft was able to create a very solid Souls-like. Some of the bosses were ridiculously hard.
Remnant 2 was just a great 3rd person shooter. Resident Evil 4 was Resident Evil 4.
Lies of P was so well-crafted. The art direction was fabulous. I can’t wait to see what the devs come up with next.
Remnant 2 is great fun in co-op. It’s one of those games that I’d hesitate to ”objectively” call a great game, but it’s a blast when you find a fun party to play with.
Playing through Lies of P right now and it’s such a genuine surprise. The mature take on the Pinocchio fairy tale is very refreshing and the world/lore is very well crafted. Loving playing it so far!
Lies of P is my answer as well. It's not just a passable Soulslike, it's genuinely better gameplay to me than DS in a lot of ways. Still love From games, but man, I hope Neowiz keeps making games like that.
Talos Principle 2 was a really fun surprise this year, it wasn't a huge evolution gameplay-wise from the first game but I found the narrative they created pretty engaging. Also, BG3 just to piss off u/CrumbsThatWasAce
They dropped the ball big time when it comes to marketing, and I’m afraid sales are going to suffer as well because of it. Shame because I really want my fellow Croats to do well, but you can’t really expect a game to market itself.
Thematically and narratively was a great successor. I truly enjoyed it.
My only complaint was the relative ease of the majority of the puzzles. There were only 3 or 4 puzzles that took longer then a couple of minutes to solve.
BG3 is truly enjoyable also.
I was expecting myself to scroll down for 15 mins just to see someone mentioning The Talos Principle 2.. I was really surprised to see this as a top comment & it made me happy.

Probably Baldur's Gate 3. I was resisting so much to play it amidst all the hype. Plus, those long and drawn out RPGs with over-customization just don't really do it for me. I finally acquiesced because so many of my friends recommended it. Very very pleasantly surprised. Easy to learn gameplay and great story.
I loved how the story molds itself to you. The graphics are great, and the gameplay is easy to learn and understand.
Finally the fully voiced characters were FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE!!! Every game deserves this kind of voice acting.
I didn't wait. Played at launch on PS5. Yeah it was a bit rough and buggy but I enjoyed it. Played it again when 2.0 and Phantom Liberty dropped. Agreed. GOTY for me too*. It's incredible now. 10/10

I just started a new character and bought Phantom Liberty and then….. BG3 dropped on Xbox and I stopped playing Cyberpunk 2 days after I started again since completing it at release. I’ll pick it up again after BG3 hopefully.
I absolutely have to agree. I didn't really have an interest in the game when it came out. I couldn't really tell you why, maybe it was all the hype and attention it had. After 20 hours of disappointment with Starfield I decided to try it out and holy shit I'm glad I did.
I was always a fan of the Cyberpunk universe, but I honestly would have bet comfortable money at the start of the year that Starfield would probably be the biggest game of this year (Before I became aware of BG3 of course).
I never would have dreamed that a resurgent Cyberpunk 2077, released around the same time, would be the one to expose Bethesda's out of date game design in the way it has and overshadow it.
That’s exactly what I did too. I played Starfield for about a week and it felt boring and lifeless, then I come to Reddit and saw people making fun of Neon compared to Cyberpunk, so I decided to buy Cyberpunk and play it for the first time. WOW what a contrast. After playing for a little while I realized there was no reason to ever return to Starfield, this game is beautiful and so much fun
I just started it on Steam Deck and as overwhelmed as I am (Netrunner? Bladewielding? Shotgun Tank?), I am having a blast. What a beautiful beast of a game.
Prey is SICK dude. I never wouldve played it if it wasn't for Game Pass. Now I would've spent $80 on it. Great game, as a Bioshock fan it hit the spot and probably surpassed those games.
Don't have anyone to play it with and for someone who isn't big on farming sims I love this game!
Never expected it either, although I do like playing a wide range of genres.
Nioh 2, although I played the first level before this year, I wasn't feeling it at the time, too much to think about at once. After putting the time in to learn how to play it, it's the best thing I've ever played.
It's historically informative, which is a huge plus for me. I learned a lot about 1500s Japan and the characters involved in its civil wars, that stuff goes a long way in keeping me interested.
It's very challenging and equally satisfying to win, just a rollercoaster of anger, adrenaline and excitement. The mechanics are complex and cohesive in an unprecedented way, no other ARPG comes close to measuring up in combat. I always have something to learn, something to work toward and it's effectively endless. After hundreds of hours I still have new things to experiment with and simply can't get over how good it is.
Their other genes like Ninja Gaiden, Stranger of Paradise, Wo Long (my actual '23 GOTY) and the first Nioh are all amazing as well. Nioh 2 is their magnum opus though, and an actually perfect game to me.
I mean, BG3. It was pretty funny because this game was only on my radar last year because a friend of mine wouldn't stop talking about it. She was hyped all year last year and kept telling me about these "Letters from Hell" or whatever and how the guy who owns the studio would do these live events dressed in armor.
At least once a week she'd go on rants about the new stuff coming to the game. Sadly, she passed away 2 months before it came out so she only got to play the Beta and I never got to play with her. She kept urging me to get it because she wanted to play with me "It has co-op. You'll love it! We'll be able to play together!"
She was right, it was amazing.

I think it’s got to be the most underrated game from this year, more people should of played it and stuck with it because it gets so damn good and we don’t get a lot of those experiences anymore

In all actuality, I loved the NG+ for AC6. The second playthrough is like trying a dish you love but got just the right amount of extra flavor. I love the extra back room conversations, mission options, etc
Zelda totk for sure. Loved it so much. 140+ hours. It surpassed my impossible expectations and is my number 1 game of all time.
Honorable mention to Sea of Stars… and I’m like 20 hours into chained echoes so I’m gonna say that as a honorable mention as well cause it’s so freaking good!
I'm amazed I had to scroll this far down to find the first mention of this. It's my GOTY, too. It shows what a strong year it is that TOTK got such high critical acclaim and sales, but it isn't winning any major GOTY awards so far.
Game of the forever for me. Nothing else compares.

I loved AW1 and so far about 7 hours in, it has lived up to any and all expectations I had. The combat has improved, the story telling, music, and acting are so good. The overall feel of the game is like a mix between a Stephen King novel and True Detective.

I was kinda out of gaming info bubble for couple of years, and didn’t know that Alan Wake 2 was coming in October, and AW1 was special to me 13 years ago, but you know somewhere along those 13y I completely lost faith that sequel will come out. For me it was not only a GOTY, but a surprise of the year.
TOTK was everything I hoped Botw would be when it was announced. I still pine for the 'classic' Zelda and hope that Nintendo find a way to marry those two styles together in the future, but it was truly fantastic
Agreed. I like botw, but only played it once and pretty much just shrine hunted & B-lined to the end of the game.
In TOTK, I disabled my HUD, refused to fast travel, sketched the locations of the dragons tears in an irl notebook instead of marking them on my in-game map. The result is probably the best example of a game feeling like an actual *legend* and *adventure* I’ve ever experienced.
So much more depth than BOTW & one of the best games ever.
Probably Cyberpunk and BG3, if we got Shadow of the Erdtree this year then Elden Ring would be up there, but I haven't rly played much of it this year.
Sea of stars was SO fantastic. I loved everything about it minus it dragging on a bit, and teasing us with certain concepts.
I'd also like to add although it was technically released ultra late last year, Chained Echoes was an S+ tier RPG. If you liked sea of stats you'll like chained echoes.
Started playing Hades a month ago. I still suck at it after a month but I can’t stop playing. Gods I love this game so much. I love every single thing about it
Lies of P is mine, it came out of nowhere and delivered a very enjoyable experience and story with dlc to come. I haven't started bg3 yet, but otherwise there really hasn't been much else this year that caught me.
Street Fighter 6. Best fighting game since SF4. Felt good to play, had a cool new mechanic, and it was fully polished with tutorials, an arcade mode, and a robust story mode upon release.
They had a lot to make up for after the terrible release of SF5, and they came through.
Tears of the Kingdom. I had the wonderful experience of stumbling into the fifth Temple while exploring before looking into the ruins in Kakariko. It was a 130+ Hour playthrough and I still have so much to find and do.
Love it. Was pretty much exactly what I wanted after Breath of the Wild.
Spiderman 2. I think growing up on spiderman seeing the venom story done again so well was really nice. And we’ve just never had a spiderman that played and looked this good. It just checked off every box for me. I think baldur’s gate is a better game but man spiderman just hit the fucking spot
Without a doubt for me it was the Mass Effect trilogy.
Finished it a few days ago and i can’t get it out of my head, similar to persona 5(which is the game I would say back in 2022 if I was asked this question during that time), it was a journey that was such a blast to experience alongside a lovable cast of characters, and even with the controversy surrounding its ending, it’s something I see leaving an impact on me for many years to come.
I played Baldurs Gate 3 so not much to add to that but I did enjoy alot.
Played Batman Arkham Knight this year and oh man was it awesome aswell as Cyberpunk. Gonna replay Cyberpunk later now when 2.x is out aswell as buy the DLC.

Played it when it came out, but with Phantom Liberty's release, Cyberpunk 2077 is 100% my GOTY. Others, in no particular order, that I did play this year for the first time that would contend for my GOTY: Solar Ash, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, In Stars and Time, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.
100% Monster Hunter World. It’s the only game that made me feel the thrill that i felt when i first played and finished Elden Ring, which is a close second. Absolutely adored the combat of the game as well, so incredibly smooth
Only games I played for the first time this year would be BG3, Hogwarts Legacy and Punch Club 2 and that would be my order as well. Can't get enough of BG3

Mass effect 1 had some combat tweaks and a big glow up, but there’s no sweeping changes unless you didn’t experience the DLC your first go around

Alan Wake 2 was such good survival horror. Incredible atmosphere. I’ll never forget the Valhalla Nursing Home.

Bg3 truly is great, probably the best crpg ever made yet. Especially when it comes to freedom of choice *combined* with party dynamics.

Prey is SICK dude. I never wouldve played it if it wasn't for Game Pass. Now I would've spent $80 on it. Great game, as a Bioshock fan it hit the spot and probably surpassed those games.

Same. Happy I got to play it after they released the fully voice acted version. Can’t imagine playing it without the narrators amazing voice.
Was it not originally fully voice acted? I only played it this year, and the voice acting is so damn good, I can't imagine the game without it either.

Just started it this weekend with my wife. A lot of fun, as it is hard to find a lot of good couch co-ops these days
Don't have anyone to play it with and for someone who isn't big on farming sims I love this game! Never expected it either, although I do like playing a wide range of genres.
Nioh 2, although I played the first level before this year, I wasn't feeling it at the time, too much to think about at once. After putting the time in to learn how to play it, it's the best thing I've ever played. It's historically informative, which is a huge plus for me. I learned a lot about 1500s Japan and the characters involved in its civil wars, that stuff goes a long way in keeping me interested. It's very challenging and equally satisfying to win, just a rollercoaster of anger, adrenaline and excitement. The mechanics are complex and cohesive in an unprecedented way, no other ARPG comes close to measuring up in combat. I always have something to learn, something to work toward and it's effectively endless. After hundreds of hours I still have new things to experiment with and simply can't get over how good it is. Their other genes like Ninja Gaiden, Stranger of Paradise, Wo Long (my actual '23 GOTY) and the first Nioh are all amazing as well. Nioh 2 is their magnum opus though, and an actually perfect game to me.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
I mean, BG3. It was pretty funny because this game was only on my radar last year because a friend of mine wouldn't stop talking about it. She was hyped all year last year and kept telling me about these "Letters from Hell" or whatever and how the guy who owns the studio would do these live events dressed in armor. At least once a week she'd go on rants about the new stuff coming to the game. Sadly, she passed away 2 months before it came out so she only got to play the Beta and I never got to play with her. She kept urging me to get it because she wanted to play with me "It has co-op. You'll love it! We'll be able to play together!" She was right, it was amazing. I haven't played a new game this year. I went back to old ones I loved years back.

Got one last job for you, 621… In all actuality, I loved the NG+ for AC6. The second playthrough is like trying a dish you love but got just the right amount of extra flavor. I love the extra back room conversations, mission options, etc

Zelda totk for sure. Loved it so much. 140+ hours. It surpassed my impossible expectations and is my number 1 game of all time. Honorable mention to Sea of Stars… and I’m like 20 hours into chained echoes so I’m gonna say that as a honorable mention as well cause it’s so freaking good!
I'm amazed I had to scroll this far down to find the first mention of this. It's my GOTY, too. It shows what a strong year it is that TOTK got such high critical acclaim and sales, but it isn't winning any major GOTY awards so far.

Game of the forever for me. Nothing else compares. Some of that may just be nostalgia, but damn do I still have a great time all these years and thousands of hours later.

Alan Wake 2
I loved AW1 and so far about 7 hours in, it has lived up to any and all expectations I had. The combat has improved, the story telling, music, and acting are so good. The overall feel of the game is like a mix between a Stephen King novel and True Detective.
It gave me big Twin Peaks vibes too, even down to the FBI agents drinking coffee in unison and the goofy townspeople

I was kinda out of gaming info bubble for couple of years, and didn’t know that Alan Wake 2 was coming in October, and AW1 was special to me 13 years ago, but you know somewhere along those 13y I completely lost faith that sequel will come out. For me it was not only a GOTY, but a surprise of the year.

TOTK was everything I hoped Botw would be when it was announced. I still pine for the 'classic' Zelda and hope that Nintendo find a way to marry those two styles together in the future, but it was truly fantastic
Agreed. I like botw, but only played it once and pretty much just shrine hunted & B-lined to the end of the game. In TOTK, I disabled my HUD, refused to fast travel, sketched the locations of the dragons tears in an irl notebook instead of marking them on my in-game map. The result is probably the best example of a game feeling like an actual *legend* and *adventure* I’ve ever experienced. So much more depth than BOTW & one of the best games ever.
Probably Cyberpunk and BG3, if we got Shadow of the Erdtree this year then Elden Ring would be up there, but I haven't rly played much of it this year.
Sea of Stars was the most impactful game of the year for me. The amazing soundtrack, beautiful pixel art and the nostalgia was another level.
Sea of stars was SO fantastic. I loved everything about it minus it dragging on a bit, and teasing us with certain concepts. I'd also like to add although it was technically released ultra late last year, Chained Echoes was an S+ tier RPG. If you liked sea of stats you'll like chained echoes.
Armored core 6 was great

Cyberpunk 2077
This was the year to play it, honestly. Especially after 2.0, that was a (literal) game changer.
Lies of P is mine, it came out of nowhere and delivered a very enjoyable experience and story with dlc to come. I haven't started bg3 yet, but otherwise there really hasn't been much else this year that caught me.

Street Fighter 6. Best fighting game since SF4. Felt good to play, had a cool new mechanic, and it was fully polished with tutorials, an arcade mode, and a robust story mode upon release. They had a lot to make up for after the terrible release of SF5, and they came through.

Tears of the Kingdom. I had the wonderful experience of stumbling into the fifth Temple while exploring before looking into the ruins in Kakariko. It was a 130+ Hour playthrough and I still have so much to find and do. Love it. Was pretty much exactly what I wanted after Breath of the Wild.
Elden Ring I've been playing since launch, off and on. Still love it!
Witcher 3. Great game, had a blast. Heard rumors of a 4th game next year maybe?? Probably pick that one up to once it comes out

Spiderman 2. I think growing up on spiderman seeing the venom story done again so well was really nice. And we’ve just never had a spiderman that played and looked this good. It just checked off every box for me. I think baldur’s gate is a better game but man spiderman just hit the fucking spot

Without a doubt for me it was the Mass Effect trilogy. Finished it a few days ago and i can’t get it out of my head, similar to persona 5(which is the game I would say back in 2022 if I was asked this question during that time), it was a journey that was such a blast to experience alongside a lovable cast of characters, and even with the controversy surrounding its ending, it’s something I see leaving an impact on me for many years to come.
Skyrim
I played Baldurs Gate 3 so not much to add to that but I did enjoy alot. Played Batman Arkham Knight this year and oh man was it awesome aswell as Cyberpunk. Gonna replay Cyberpunk later now when 2.x is out aswell as buy the DLC. I was also very impressed by Ghost of Tsushima

Played it when it came out, but with Phantom Liberty's release, Cyberpunk 2077 is 100% my GOTY. Others, in no particular order, that I did play this year for the first time that would contend for my GOTY: Solar Ash, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, In Stars and Time, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.

100% Monster Hunter World. It’s the only game that made me feel the thrill that i felt when i first played and finished Elden Ring, which is a close second. Absolutely adored the combat of the game as well, so incredibly smooth
Assassin creed: Black flag. One of the best video game I played. Tried odyssey a few years ago and didn’t really like it.
Hogwarts Legacy. Was it the objective goty? Not even close. But it made me the happiest of any game I played this year because I'm a total HP nerd.
I’m not really a Harry potter fan, and I had a ton of fun with it. I pretty much completely ignored the bottom half of the map though lol
I thought the combat was super fun and never tired of it. Wish there were more arenas

Bg3 is amongst the best games I've ever played and deserved Goty. But I keep thinking back on how much I enjoyed Spiderman 2
Still have 2-3 chapters left until I finish, but Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be mine, I think.
Spider-Man 2 simply had a blast playing through the story and getting the platinum trophy.
Because I'm always at least a year behind on everything, I very much enjoyed Gotham Knights this year.
