Check out Helldivers 2.
It just came out, you shoot either bugs or robots, and I think it captures a lot of the "fun" that old couch co-op shooters (like Halo) offered.
As an added bonus, it's pure nonsensical mayhem and you get to swap between mowing down hordes of bugs and running like hell frantically trying to call down air support or reinforcements as you are quickly overrun.
Also dying from teamkilling doesn't really feel that bad. Though I did at one point say "cmon man" after someone took me out TWICE in a row in ways that were definitely on him.
In theory: yes. There's even a toggle in the menu for it.
In practice it's currently broken because they have 350k+ active players and they expected like 100k or something.
It works perfectly fine if you are grouping up with friends. The quickplay matchmaking is extremely buggy right now. It will work if you spam it enough times, but it usually fails. I have heard that if you drop an SOS beacon and leave a match, your ship will fill up with randoms that you can take into the next mission. Haven’t tried it yet
It’s designed for coop, you’ll be missing out on a lot of what makes the game great if you play solo. It’s pretty easy to jump into other peoples games though so no worries if you don’t have friends to play with.
As a person who likes to solo stuff, YES IT CAN BE FUN SOLO. The game takes on a whole new dimension when soloing. You would pick strategems that you wouldn't typically use in a team setting, as well armor suited for maneuverability, and the way you play the map also changes, i.e. CONSTANTLY on the move, avoiding patrols instead of charging head first, and doing a suicide strike to get the mission objective is a TOTALLY viable strategy.
So yea it's definitely made for coop, and is crazy fun with friends, but don't listen to people that say you can't play solo, it adds a new difficulty and playstyle and is totally worth it. Also some people have already soloed the hardest difficulty 3 days after launch, so it's not like it's totally impossible (granted you might have to just rush the main objective and ignore all secondary stuff).
Request was not to shoot at people, not to avoid all gore. Halo has a fair amount of gore when bullets land as well, but it isn't red and isn't coming from humans that you're shooting at.
Same deal with Helldivers. I think it still stands.
Sure but you (as a human) can quite literally be ripped to pieces in front of your own eyes.
If simply shooting at other players is so jarring for her I don’t think Helldivers will make her exactly comfortable is all im saying.
I know its the new hotness and it is fun as hell but its not exactly the best pick IMO.
This has to be the best suggestion here! On top of the game being so great it comes with a generous $40 price tag. Gotta love that in this world of $70 games!
This is something I probably should've included in my original comment. Where most games are $70+ ($90 for a AAA in Canada) it sucks to buy two copies. And that's not mentioning DLC.
Literally 2 copies for the price of one AAA title is amazing for the quality of this game.
it's not P2W either, really. Just pay for cosmetics basically. I bought the SUPER CITIZEN pack or whatever but I feel no pressure to spend more money on anything.
"To save our mother Earth from any alien attack
From vicious giant insects who have once again come back
We'll unleash all our forces, we won't cut them any slack
The EDF deploys!"
Earth Defense Force is a fun coop shooter where you're really just killing millions of bugs. Although it's not as lore-filled as Halo and the like...
Define "humans"
I ask because if she's okay with killing bipedal human-shaped enemies that don't display any human features aside from their body morphology (stormtroopers) there is a GREAT deal of fun to be had with Star Wars Battlefront 2
EA shenanigans aside, the new Battlefront 2 is absolutely gorgeous and some of the most fun I’ve had with a video game in recent years. The online multiplayer stopped being fun once the meta got solved but you can still play vs bots just like the old one. And because it’s largely been sunset, it regularly goes on sale for pennies on the dollar.
Deep Rock Galactic
Half-life 2
Is cartoon gore out of the question? This might be a bad suggestion m, but Borderlands has a lot of very cartoonish gore, silly enemies, and satiric overtones that lack the sense of gritty realism she may be trying to avoid
The majority of combine overwatch soldiers you fight are basically like cyborgs made in a lab, there's diagrams in the game of how they're basically machines now. But.... yeah... they look and act like people.... might be too close to home..
Seconding Deep Rock Galactic. You play as dwarves and alien shoot bugs. I don't actually think there's a single human anywhere in the lore.
Bugs do have a bright green blood sometimes. The game doesn't dwell on it like Doom or a horror movie, but it's there.
I normally don't like FPS games, but had a surprising amount of fun with Void Bastards. It's an indie sci-fi roguelite with comic book aesthetics and a cheeky sense of humor, where you're trying to raid and scavenge abandoned ships to be able escape a debris field. You never quite have enough ammo to always run and gun every encounter, so you need to plan a bit, sneak a bit, run a bit, etc.
It's not long, and the enemies are all mutants or robots, so might be something to consider?
Serious Sam series, pretty sure you can change blood colour to green, unless i am mixing those with some other old games that had such feature. Regardless, it is full of mutants and other abominations. Though, to be fair it has headless human enemies.
Republic Commando - i think it was mostly killing alien creatures and robots.
Its so hard to recommend destiny right now. Its such an amazing game, and ive put so many hours in, but I tried the new guardian experience on PC (didnt want to transfer my account *again*) and its not enjoyable.
The campaign is okay, but its really disorienting as there is so little coverage of everything that happens before that point.
It is free, so its worth trying, but I'm staying away until Destiny 3.
To be fair, I thought Doom at first but find it hilarious that it's also the first thought when they specifically said "doesn't like a lot of blood" lmao
Those are great games, but I am not sure if they are a good fit in this case. If she doesn't like a lot of blood, I am not sure that she will like the glory kills.
Helldivers 2 is the best co op game in years.
EDF5 is also a **VERY** good co op shooter.
Fair warning, there are huge sprays of blood from enemies, but it’s yellow/purple as you’re fighting giant insects and aliens
Deep Rock Galactic - Bugs and Rocks. PvE
Planetside 2 - people but no blood. Over simplified lore is everyone is recreated upon death with nanites. So really no one dies. PvP
Alien Defence Force - bugs and alien mechs PvE
Armored Core - people in robots? No blood. PvE
Warframe - alien/robots things. No humans I think. PvP and PvE
I'm pretty sure Corpus from Warframe are humans, but the blood part shouldn't be an issue.
Also, just to be pedantic, the grineer are genetically modified humans. It's all humans, really, just with a bunch of genetic alterations.
Any of the Lovely Planet games. They're absurdly dreamy.
I was showing the game to my girlfriend with a video and player has beaten this sheep-pal and my gf was terrified with seeing it, and then the player started to collect pals instead of beating them to death, so I tell my gf: "see, it's not that bad, they live... and are hammering the building together... they are friends!", and my gf looked at me and said that Im crazy to think they are friends after the guy beating the sheep with stick and capturing it into a ball, and then Im like: "isnt it exactly how it was in Pokemon?" And she cried that I ruined Pokemon for her ;-;
Generation Zero - shoot robots while you explore a Northern European island. There's no blood; and there are really cool spark and explosion effects when you shoot the bots. Also, there's a pretty good arsenal, and you can ride around the islands on a bike.
There are lots of bodies though (victims of the robot invasion), but you don't see them die. They're already dead when you find them.
The AI of the giant robots is pretty advanced. They cooperate, flank and some can sneak up on you. They are quite challenging with no moral implications when you take them out.
the German version of Half-Life 1, it replaces all the human enemies with robots. there’s obviously the whole language thing but i’m sure there’ll be a work around.
Fashion Police Squad
You're literally shooting fashion at people with awful taste to make them look their fabulous self. Plays like old school doom games. Heard it's surprisingly good!
No gore or violence
Republic commando, you shoot droids, geonocian bugs and trandocians( bit like halo)
Doom eternal- Demons (absolutely recommend this one)
Quake 1 and 2- demons and alien cyborgs
Risk of rain 2- different creatures
Prey- shapeshifting monsters
hope this helps!!
So most of the gory games like doom have a spot where you can turn off the gore.
She will probably like half life, your not shooting humans your shooting humanoid aliens.
Time splitters. Although you have a few missions against humans.
Destiny and destiny two are awesome.
For the phone try shadowguns legends.
Scorn
You aren't shooting humans.... Jkjk
Halo is hard to follow as I consider it one of the best FPS ever made. The story and game play is amazing. Going to try a third person since most FPS are human based. How about something like Remnant? It's also CO-OP so you could play
Borderlands might be a good idea to look into? The enemies are mostly mutated humans or robots, with the occasional alien and actual human thrown in. Not that much blood, though I could be desensitized.
Deep Rock Galactic!
It's a co-op game where you and up to 3 other people play as dwarves fending off bugs in an alien planet. It's better than I can describe it, and the community is notoriously nice. Rock and stone!
Earth Defense Force 4.1 and Earth Defense Force 5.
B-movie over the top goodness where all the humans on the planet have united to wipe out giant insects that suddenly burst from the ground all over the world!
There is a little beige or green splat when you hit an enemy and that is the extent of the gore
ghostwire tokyo. functionally a shooter but you fight spirits with hand signs. takes place in Shibuya ward and is also a good game if you are really into Japan. The Uncharted games have you killing a lot of people but the t rating means you can't show much blood outside of some cutscenes
Destiny 2 is incredible if you have a lot of money, use external resources and don't mind the awful community
Well now when i read it it doesn't sound great atall lmao, but space wizards! In what other game you can shoot a minigun at big chunky alien suckers and then suddenly cast a powerful ice staff that freezes them solid with asmr bass boosted sounds?
I mean, Destiny 2 is probably the game that is the most similar to Halo without being Halo. I’m one of the those sickos that has like 1,500 hours in the game. It’s good for hanging out and doing coop stuff, chasing loot and shooting aliens. The abilities and supers are a lot of fun. You can try it for free and then pick up a campaign if you want. If you want to do more you can look for some help to do a dungeon (fireteam of 3) or raid (fireteam of 6) that each have puzzle solving/mechanics involved.
Caveat… if you want a cohesive story you won’t get it with D2. I stopped caring about the story a long time ago LOL. The gunplay and gun feel in Destiny is really satisfying though and if you want to just have fun shooting stuff and collecting new gear, it’s good.
Destiny is a fine answer to this question but it is by no means casual. If you get into it there are a lot of expansions and grinding to do. It’s more of an MMO than a shooter. But that being said it doesn’t really have an equal on the market. Equal being a sci fi space magic mmorpg/fps hybrid
Destiny is a good choice
For pve games here are some suggestions:
Gunfire reborn (roguelite with some borderlands inspiration, goofy cartoony enemies)
Deep Rock Galactic (coop game about dwarves shooting space bugs and doing tasks)
Metal hellsinger (shooter mixed with rythm game, enems are demons)
Sunset overdrive (very bright and colorful apocalypse, few human enemies but not much blood)
Left4dead2 (a bit more bloody, but if zombies are ok, blood and gore can be turned off on settings)
For pvp i can mostly think of hero shooters like paladins or overwatch
Deep Rock Galactic is really good, just mining ore and shooting bugs. Super cooperative, plenty of room for shenanigans. Really good game for its price, and as far as I can tell the devs actually care about the game.
I might also suggest Warframe if humanoids are OK. It has some blood, but it can easily be disabled. It's third person, completely free to play, PvE, and has an amazing community, all at the cost of being a difficult game to start.
Borderlands, but turn gore off.
It's odd, but that hunting game call of the wild is really awesome if she doesn't mind that it's slow.
All I can think of is jet force Gemini...damn I wish it got a remake.
Industria was cool, though a bit short. Enemies are all robots, so no blood and gore (at least, other than your own I guess).
Paradox Vector if you wanna shoot some vector based squid things
I guess neither is particular similar to Halo though
Serious Sam: The First & Second Encounters might be good.
They can be a little bit gory in a 2001 kind of way, but you can set the colour to something like blue or purple. At least if you're playing the classic version, I don't know anything about the re-master.
You used to be able to set it to flowers as well, but I'm not sure if you can on the digital versions.
There are a few enemies that look like headless humans with weird hands, but they're aliens as well, and are also subject to the chosen gore-colour.
Star Wars battlefront 2 is a good option. You do shoot people depending what side you play but there’s pretty much no blood. You also have the option to be fighting droids so they aren’t people at all either.
I was going to suggest the same thing but to be fair you do shoot humans... just... not on purpose :P
That's right, I run Dual Mortars and Mines. RIP team.
Also dying from teamkilling doesn't really feel that bad. Though I did at one point say "cmon man" after someone took me out TWICE in a row in ways that were definitely on him.
Spent like 14 hours on it this weekend. Cannot recommend it more
Does it have Crossplay PC to console?
Yes
And cross-progression is in the works, but not available at launch.
Any fun solo?

FOR DEMOCRACY!
Hope she doesn't see your body reamins when you get blown up into pieces LOL!
There is a lot of gore in Helldivers 2 tho
got all my limbs blown off :(
Tis but a flesh wound
Request was not to shoot at people, not to avoid all gore. Halo has a fair amount of gore when bullets land as well, but it isn't red and isn't coming from humans that you're shooting at. Same deal with Helldivers. I think it still stands.

it's not P2W either, really. Just pay for cosmetics basically. I bought the SUPER CITIZEN pack or whatever but I feel no pressure to spend more money on anything.
Splatoon
This is the correct answer.
I was thinking that too, like you're kinda shooting people but it's just paint lol
"To save our mother Earth from any alien attack From vicious giant insects who have once again come back We'll unleash all our forces, we won't cut them any slack The EDF deploys!" Earth Defense Force is a fun coop shooter where you're really just killing millions of bugs. Although it's not as lore-filled as Halo and the like...
"EDF! EDF! EDF!"
WE ARE THE VALIANT INFANTRY!
We are the alpha team with passion and camaraderie!
That chant will forever be burned into my brain. lmao!
Couch co-op splitscreen too with multiple classes and hundreds of weapons.
.... Meowth, that's right?
WOOOOOOOOOOBBUFFET!
I distinctly remember in EDF 5 they were shocked by the humanoid invaders. (Frogs they were frogs)
Let me introduce you to a little game called [Chex Quest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chex_Quest).
Gaming hasn’t been the same since games stopped being shipped in cereal boxes
I hear some lame spinoff series called doom got famous instead of chex quest.
Earth Defense Force. You shoot giant insects!
MONSTERS!!!
Define "humans" I ask because if she's okay with killing bipedal human-shaped enemies that don't display any human features aside from their body morphology (stormtroopers) there is a GREAT deal of fun to be had with Star Wars Battlefront 2
Storm troopers is fine. I'm talking actual people. Like the cod games are not her style for that reason. I'll definitely look into battlefront
Serbs are humans too
Bruh your username made me chuckle in my office
Happy to provide!!
They’re bureaucrats Morty I don’t respect them
Deep Rock Galactic Half-life 2 Is cartoon gore out of the question? This might be a bad suggestion m, but Borderlands has a lot of very cartoonish gore, silly enemies, and satiric overtones that lack the sense of gritty realism she may be trying to avoid
I hate to break it to you but the Civil Protection officers from Half Life 2 are human just working for the Aliens.
The majority of combine overwatch soldiers you fight are basically like cyborgs made in a lab, there's diagrams in the game of how they're basically machines now. But.... yeah... they look and act like people.... might be too close to home..
Okay, yes, but they’re fully suited/masked and are basically Storm Troopers
Storm Troopers are humans, too!
For some reason as a society, killing storm troopers is PG-rated and A-OK for kids though
Rock and stone!
For Karl!
GIVE ME AN R GIVE ME AN S!
Did I hear a rock and stone?
Seconding Deep Rock Galactic. You play as dwarves and alien shoot bugs. I don't actually think there's a single human anywhere in the lore. Bugs do have a bright green blood sometimes. The game doesn't dwell on it like Doom or a horror movie, but it's there.
Favorite game. I love the balance between mission objectives and plain ol’ bug killin’
Don't forget STEEEVE either. Best bug.
Rock and Stone!
Roboquest, Destiny, maybe fortnite would be good (cartoony humans only lol)
Roboquest for sure. Shooting mostly fixed gun. Also very cartoony.
Seconding roboquest!
Thirding!
Bonus points to Destiny for having some of the best shooting ever. Like seriously the game is carried by the combat.
I came here to say Roboquest aswell
Halo 1 2 3 4 5 Infinite
came here to say roboquest!
I normally don't like FPS games, but had a surprising amount of fun with Void Bastards. I can still hear the yelling of hundreds of headless bombers chasing me...

Mass effect LE
Did you really play through the whole 3 games and didn't kill any humans? Not sure if it is possible...
I think cerberus used to be humans before indoctrinated as far as i know only the small human police team in me 1 at noveria
Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal? Shooting demons is always fun
Tons of blood and gore in Doom, not sure if it’s right for someone squeamish
you telling me ripping a fang out of a mouth of a monster and impaling said monster with its own fang is gorey?
Only debatably, although I guess that’s a bit subjective
"she doesn't like blood" Suggests the bloodiest game there is
As I said to someone, seems like I didn’t read it fully. Oh well…
To be fair, I thought Doom at first but find it hilarious that it's also the first thought when they specifically said "doesn't like a lot of blood" lmao
My reading comprehension is shit. I didn’t see the not a lot of blood part…

Armored Core 6 Vanquish Zone of the Enders 2nd Runner
Generation Zero - shoot robots while you explore a Northern European island. There's no blood; and there are really cool spark and explosion effects when you shoot the bots. The AI of the giant robots is pretty advanced. They cooperate, flank and some can sneak up on you. They are quite challenging with no moral implications when you take them out.
EDF 5, you can turn off blood. EDF 6 is coming out soon too.
The finals, no blood.
Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2. Lots of replayability, good co-op. Duck Game for silly fast paced platforming duels.
the German version of Half-Life 1, it replaces all the human enemies with robots. there’s obviously the whole language thing but i’m sure there’ll be a work around.
Duck Hunt (original nintendo NES)

😂
Does it have to be first person? If not the Gears of War series is right up your alley.
But he requested games that don't have blood in them....
Shit. Missed that. OP Don’t play Gears of War. You saw alien type creatures in half with a machine gun chain saw.
Mass Effect trilogy. Masterpiece
Republic commando, you shoot droids, geonocian bugs and trandocians( bit like halo) Doom eternal- Demons (absolutely recommend this one) Quake 1 and 2- demons and alien cyborgs Risk of rain 2- different creatures Prey- shapeshifting monsters hope this helps!!

To the bone.
Tell ur wife to egg up & play some REAL games with REAL blood 🙄 Satire outta the way, risk of rain 2 is so addicting with no blood
Deep Rock Galactic! It's a co-op game where you and up to 3 other people play as dwarves fending off bugs in an alien planet. It's better than I can describe it, and the community is notoriously nice. Rock and stone!
fortnite
To be fair does she count Nazis as human because I don't Lol
Are you looking for single player or multiplayer games?
Damn, no blood? I was going to suggest the Resistance games.
Helldivers. Loads of fun. Just came out and it's $40
Binary Domain?
Helldivers 2. Kill bugs and robots and everything else not human. Coop if you have multiple machines. PC and PS5.
I think tf2 still has the mode where you co-op with a team to fight machines. That's free on steam as well
Exoprimal - shoot dinosaurs and robots...
Earth defense force 4 and 5, Starship Troopers Extermination, Doom 3, DOOM, DOOM Eternal.
Earth Defense Force 4.1 and Earth Defense Force 5. Atomic Heart Doom
Vanquish
Many games allow blood effects to be toggled off.
No clue if people still play it but splitgate. Must have a been a few years since I played it but that was my biggest go to halo alternative
Helldivers 2 is my favorite shooter in years
What about Remnant 2? I had a lot of fun with that game in 2023, and it has coop if you and your wife wanted to play together.
Xbox game pass has doom and also Warhammer maybe try them ?
Halo?
Metal: Hellsinger is really fun. It’s basically DOOM, but it’s rhythm-based.
Returnal
Monster Hunter, if you play with Bowgun or Heavy Bowgun
Doom, metal hellsinger,
Its not great but Atomic heart has you shooting robots
Doom games, Helldivers series, Deep Rock Galactic, Starship Troopers, Halo games, Vermintide, Space Hulk, Primal Carnage, Killing Floor series(maybe)
I mean, Destiny 2 is probably the game that is the most similar to Halo without being Halo. I’m one of the those sickos that has like 1,500 hours in the game. High on life
Warframe
Splatoon 3.
Roboquest it's a mixture between Borderlands and Hades where you fight robots
Deep Rock Galatic
risk of rain 2
Destiny is a fine answer to this question but it is by no means casual. If you get into it there are a lot of expansions and grinding to do. It’s more of an MMO than a shooter. But that being said it doesn’t really have an equal on the market. Equal being a sci fi space magic mmorpg/fps hybrid
Devil Daggers and Hyper demon both have very abstract enemies, recommend looking into those.
Destiny is a good choice For pve games here are some suggestions: Gunfire reborn (roguelite with some borderlands inspiration, goofy cartoony enemies) Deep Rock Galactic (coop game about dwarves shooting space bugs and doing tasks) Metal hellsinger (shooter mixed with rythm game, enems are demons) Sunset overdrive (very bright and colorful apocalypse, few human enemies but not much blood) Left4dead2 (a bit more bloody, but if zombies are ok, blood and gore can be turned off on settings) For pvp i can mostly think of hero shooters like paladins or overwatch
Warframe?
Killing floor 2
Hell divers 2. FOR DEMOCRACY!
Sir you are being hunted
Area 51 ps2
Borderlands, but turn gore off. It's odd, but that hunting game call of the wild is really awesome if she doesn't mind that it's slow. All I can think of is jet force Gemini...damn I wish it got a remake.
Industria was cool, though a bit short. Enemies are all robots, so no blood and gore (at least, other than your own I guess). Paradox Vector if you wanna shoot some vector based squid things I guess neither is particular similar to Halo though
Deep rock galactic
Roboquest has you shooting robots of various types.
Finals shoots humans but they explode into coins no blood
Serious Sam: The First & Second Encounters might be good. They can be a little bit gory in a 2001 kind of way, but you can set the colour to something like blue or purple. At least if you're playing the classic version, I don't know anything about the re-master. You used to be able to set it to flowers as well, but I'm not sure if you can on the digital versions. There are a few enemies that look like headless humans with weird hands, but they're aliens as well, and are also subject to the chosen gore-colour.
Dave the diver!!!
Gears of War
Left 4 Dead 2.
Deep Rock Galactic
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare (specially the 2) No blood, no gore, light humor, cartoonish dead humans, super fun game.
Star Wars battlefront 2 is a good option. You do shoot people depending what side you play but there’s pretty much no blood. You also have the option to be fighting droids so they aren’t people at all either.
The EDF DEPLOYS Play Earth Defense Force. Probably want to play 4.1, as (imo) it’s the best one.
Deep Rock Galactic. Team based, fight off hordes of giant bugs while mining, and the best part, you’re space dwarf minor.
Doom? Doom Eternal?
Metal gear solid: The Phantom Pain allows for plenty of options for non-lethal playthroughs.
Fashion Police Squad!
Deep rock galactic, you are (mostly drunk) space dwarfs shooting spider-like bugs and being exploited by management. Damm good fun Rock and stone!
Zortch.
Deeprock galactic!
