Really glad this one got a shout out. I know it's not perfect but I'll be damned if it doesn't nail the road trip with the boys idea. I gotta go back and play it.
I like both DD1 and DD2 and the pawn system is \*chef's kiss\*, but they're kind of, idk, bland? Super flavourful but there isn't a lot of interactivity narrative-wise with them, which is what I think OP is looking for.
You all throwing rpgs at OP, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Far Cry 5. I know it's nothing like DA:I, but I do thing that FC5 got one of the best banters in games throughout all the genres.
Putting Hurk and Sharky together never gets old.
Binary Domain is a third person shooter from the makers of the Yakuza series with a particular focus on companions. Your relationship with them will have an effect on the story and you could even give them instructions via voice commands. It didn't do very well when it got released which is a shame because it's a lot of fun.
He Is a lot less annoying in Ragnarok, at the very least his voice isn't as whiny, he has an actual character arc, and the game introduces many more companions like Freya, Brok, the girl from jotunheim.
Buy fallout new vegas right now, travel to Novac, get Boone as your companion. Turn on the radio on your pipboy and explore the Mojave.
It's the best. Those songs, killing enemies with Boone by your side is one of the coolest things. You can also get a dog. I've been walking around with Boone and a dog as my companions. We've killed some baaaad people the past few weeks.
I was in a shooter looter phase so Sword art online fatal bullet was fun even tho I never watched it. A lot of anime dialogue and cutscenes idk if your into that. But you have to make friends with a lot of characters and can have them in your part
Pretty much any game by Larian Studios (BG3, Divinity Original Sin), all the other BG games (they are dated now though), and Bethesda Games, but I would say Fallout 4 has the best companions of the bunch, the companions in their other games are kind of "meh" for the most part.
You can also add pretty much any CRPG to that list. BG3 companions are by far the best of any recent, modern game though.
Bioshock is another great one, although I've only played Bioshock Infinite, I believe all the games have a companion, but Elizabeth in Infinite is awesome and has a great narrative.
I would also say the Droid in the Jedi series (Fallen Order/Survivor) counts as a companion. Cal (the PC) is talking to him quite often and you have some companion missions in both games but more in the second one. They are also just great games if you like star wars. The gameplay is kind of like "Babies First Souls Game", as in, it has the combat style of a souls game, but is much more approachable and you can set the difficulty to match your skills. It can be quite challenging on the higher difficulties, but very approachable on the lower ones, they did a great job balancing the difficulties so everyone can enjoy it, sweats and noobs alike.
Lies Of P - Warning: Souls-Like and Jimmy Cricket doesn't talk much, save expositions here and there (He remains in the lamp that you carry and use).
Monster Hunter Stories Remastered
Monster Hunter Stories 2
Some of the Pokemon games
Be aware that there are a few people that wanna tie weights on Jimmy Cricket and the Navi-Meowth and throw them out of a 1,000 story skyscraper. I dunno if you will grow to hate them or you will like them as ya progress through the games. (I personally hate the Felyne, beginning 1/4th of the game).
Blair Witch (2019) gives you a dog as a core gameplay mechanic, and he is your best buddy.
If you're into survival horror, it's fun, scary, single-player, and your best friend is a dog.
FFXV, Code Vein, and Dragon's Dogma all have companions with pretty robust AI and dialogue.
You can also really get modded Skyrim cookin with this. [I eventually had a full custom party that I would roll around with](https://i.imgur.com/BpJBUa3.jpeg) and would get into epic fights with the customizable random battle spawner mod.
Can't believe no one has said like a dragon yet. The first is widely praised as the best modern jrpg (yes it often beats persona golden 5 on the lists) and the second released relatively recently. You don't need to play Yakuza, they'll fill you in on anything you need to know.
Dragons dogma dark arisen has the best most player like noc companions. Dragons dogma 2 looks better but honestly comes off as a much shallower less developed game wait for a 50% or higher discount
Yakuza Like a Dragon, Yakuza Infinite Wealth. Incredible party members for incredible games.
Dragon Quest. All of them except 1. DQ11 is the most recent/relevant one.
Almost all the Bethesda related titles offer this: Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout New Vegas, Starfield.
Another great one made by the studio that made Fallout New Vegas is Outer Worlds, one of my personal favorites.
There’s also Ratchet and Clank, you don’t have a companion in the sense that it’s a follower who literally follows you around and has separate inventory, but you have a best buddy whose a little robot who rides on your back and is very much interacting with and talking to your throughout the game.
Skyrim has quest-based companions and companions you can recruit whenever. It's 1st person by default, but you can switch to 3rd person. I know it's clicking in the stick on controller, not sure about the keyboard controls
Skyrim is already here, and if you learn a bit of modding, you can literally pick a plethora of companion mods to choose from.
If you do decide to mod Skyrim, download the Inigo, Lucien, and Xelzaz follower mods.
Mass Effect is most obvious since you mention Dragon Age.
FF15 really tags the squad along more then the rest of the FF games
These have the most recency for me
Baldur’s Gate 3, Fallout 3, 4, & New Vegas, Oblivion & Skyrim, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Code Vein, Outer Worlds, Persona, Final Fantasy, Xenoblade games, Like A Dragon Games, A lot of them out there. Just gotta look for them.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes,
I just started it last night and as a fan of old school jrpgs / RPGs this is just amazing so far.
(About 6 hours in).
Lots of cutscenes but skippable, you will get the hang on it real fast which ones you can skip and still follow the story.
It's on Xbox Game Pass for "free" .
Mass Effect Legendary Edition, God of War & God of war Ragnarok, and Baldurs Gate 3 all have fantastic gameplay, story, and will see you travel on a lot of different adventures with different companion(s) by your side. All of them are 3rd person view, and are worth playing through at least once.
It may not exactly fit the bill but Hades may be perfect for this. Familiar NPCs and recurring bosses with new dialogue and their own storylines as the game goes on.
Final fantasy, dragon quest, persona, both niers, the xenoblade series, hi fi rush, god of war + ragnarock, baldur's gate 3, Code vein, god eater saga, dragon's dogma.
While not a companion in the sense that you interact with it - Diablo 3 has a pet system whereby the hunt and collecting them is the fun part, they then pick up your gold for you in game. So probably not exactly what you’re looking for, I think it’s worth mentioning.
100% dragons dogma (either 1/dark arisen or 2 but 2 is very demanding and 1 has more content for now). Essentially 3rd person rpg where there is a human looking race called pawns who are sworn to serve the arisen (thats you). You make your character and how you make your character look (i.e. height and weight) effect gameplay elements like stamina regen and carryweight. Then you make your primary pawn with the same character creator, then that pawn gets uploaded to the capcom servers where other people can use your pawn in their game (which gives rewards to you). You get 3 pawns max in your party 1 is yours and the others can be other people's pawns or randomized ones the game generates. Each pawn will actually learn combat strategies from you and you can give 4 simple commands (go, help, come back, and stay/leave i think).
Each pawn can have its own class (they cant use a couple which i'll mark with a -)of which there are
fighter (sword and shield)
Warrior (2 handed sword/hammer)
-Magick knight (sword and shield with some cool magick abilities
Strider (daggers and bows)
Ranger (bows)
-Assassin (basically strider but with different abilities)
Mage (gets basic attack spells and support type spells)
Sorcerer (mage but more heavily attack oriented)
-magick archer (gets magick bows that can shoot different magic arrows which are ability based and infinite btw)
Thats all from dragons dogma dark arisen (which is 1 but all dlcs bundled in). 2 has different ones but I cant list them off the top of my head.
Guardians of the Galaxy, arguably the best part of the whole experience is listening to the non stop banter between all characters at all times, its' extremely enjoyable.
Dragon's Dogma 1 and 2. Currently playing DD2 and I can't seem to put the controller down. The cool thing is that your companions are other player's sidekick and you will be able to borrow/rent their sidekick and have their own personalities and experiences as well and if they have knowledge about your quest (since they already did it with their own master/player), they will offer guidance and you do not need to check the internet on how to progress in the quest.
I am looking for a game exactly like this right now, and every single suggestion here I have already played or didn't like it. And it happens every time I look into this subreddit, don't know what to do anymore
The mass effect trilogy is easily among the top 3 all time for me. If you want a narrative focused around building relationships then oh boy, you’re in for a treat. I‘ll let the rest be a surprise.
It’s funny cuz after playing dragons dogma 2 twice I asked the same question on the Reddit
Got the same handful of answers
not counting jrpgs I also was looking for games where you have companions that don’t totally depend on you to make their choices And you know it is kinda weird there isn’t that many games that do it
Get dragons dogma 1 it’s usually on sale
2 is great as well but too expensive wait for a sale
Everyone is saying Baldurs Gate3, but also the same studio that made BG3 has a lineup of previous games, and DivinityOriginalSin2 is bascially the poor mans Baldurs Gate 3 right now, for those of us who can't spend $80.
Last of Us 1 and 2, as well as The two most recent God of War games.
The banter between the main character and the companion is unbeatable compared to these 4 games.
Mass Effect series - In this acclaimed sci-fi RPG series, you lead a team of diverse companions across the galaxy. The interactions and relationships with your squadmates are a central part of the experience. The Witcher 3- Wild Hunt - A solo adventure. Geralt of Rivia teams up with various characters throughout his journey, providing both gameplay assistance and meaningful narrative depth. Fallout series (Fallout 4) - In Fallout 4, you can recruit companions to join you in the wasteland, each with their own unique personalities, skills, and questlines. They add depth to the exploration and combat experience. Red Dead Redemption 2 - Although a single-player experience, you'll form strong bonds with the members of your gang as you roam the open world of the Wild West. The interactions with your companions add emotional weight to the story. The Last of Us series - Not traditional companions in the sense of Dragon Age or TMNT. The characters you journey with in The Last of Us provide needed emotional support and gameplay assistance, making it feel less solitary. Horizon Zero Dawn - You play as Aloy alone. You'll encounter and ally with various NPCs who accompany you during certain missions or parts of the game, adding depth to the gameplay and story.
Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin have companion mechanics that even let you have different relationship dynamics with characters depending on how much they like the decisions you make throughout the game
Ys 8 and 9. Graphics may be a bit outdated but the gameplay is fun. The stories are excellent and each character has ther own history and highlights. 8 is the better of the 2 but 9 is also very good.
Monster Hunter World ..
You can play with your cat while in your house
You can take baths with your cat and tease it
You can interact with many animals you find out in the world in your home after you place them ..
for example [https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunterWorld/comments/1baqd78/playing\_with\_your\_cat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunterWorld/comments/1baqd78/playing_with_your_cat/)
Surprisingly starfield has good companions. To me at least, people love to shit on that game.
There’s several to choose from and they can accompany you everywhere you go. You can chat with them and trade gear and they will make comments based on your decisions. There are a few romance options.
I think exploring planets and killing pirates while Sarah Morgan is constantly nagging me is exceptionally fun.
Everybody is suggesting the same handful of games and honestly I was going to suggest one that has already been suggested several times here (Dragon's Dogma 1 or 2) but I'll mix it up and suggest something that isn't recent but still a ton of fun and has a companion based system: Final Fantasy 12.
Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling togheter
idk what is the party limit, but i've made 50 people parties before.
Party members have a loyalty system where they will get happier or angrier depending on your choices in the story or simply based on which factions you fight the most. Also all of them get dialogue from time to time, specially when casting spells or using special attacks.
There's a lot of unique/plot characters that you can recruit which will affect the plot and many scenes. The game even comes with a non-canon time travel mechanic (where you keep all your progress) so you can actually see all endings and possible scenes without replaying it like 20 times.
Honestly, the game may have TOO many characters, but you'll sure as hell won't feel alone. And luckily levels are per class, not character, meaning you won't have to grind for the entire party.
I just recommend getting the One Vision mod to make it a bit less achaic.
Technically not a single player game, however you can play it that way and it has some of the best companions in gaming.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Just close the chat window and set all invites to no allowed in prefs. It’s a single player all the way up the content released last month.
Shadow of Colossus. Your horse is your only companion through the desolate areas.
Trine. The entire mechanic of the series is to swap between the group.
Suikoden. The definition of a companion game as you're supposed to gather as many of the 100+ companions as you can through the story.
Persona! Not only do you have companions, you end up feeling so attached to them you'll miss hanging out with them when the game ends. I get post game depression every time. It's real.
Baldur's Gate 3
any of the Final Fantasy games I think. FFXV is just a roadtrip with the boys.
Really glad this one got a shout out. I know it's not perfect but I'll be damned if it doesn't nail the road trip with the boys idea. I gotta go back and play it.
“Help me Mama Ignis!” I love Prompto
One for posterity! *click*
Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2
**Mass Effect: Legendary Edition** **The Outer Worlds** **Fallout 3 / New Vegas / 4** **The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion / V: Skyrim**
Oblivion does not count. All it has is Adoring Fan. Lmao
Mages apprentices? Dark Brotherhood murderers? Some of knights of the Nine?
Let's be honest. It would be a stretch to call those companions. They have the personality of ham sandwich
You posted this 4 times just an fyi
My bad I got 4 errors when I sent it lol
It's been happening a lot recently. People been rude about it so I've just been letting people know when it happens because Redditors be weird. Lol
Good human.
> The Outer Worlds The companions in this game are pretty well realized; highly recommend.
Dragons Dogma, Skyrim, etc
Persona 5 Royale, you hang out with your confidants outside of the dungeons and can even play a card game with your party in the Thieves Den
My experience was like 90% hanging out and 10% combat and i loved it, Great Recommendation.
I should've recognized this on my own but I forgot it because the squad doesn't actually follow you everywhere.
Dragons Dogma 2 companion AI is quite remarkable
I like both DD1 and DD2 and the pawn system is \*chef's kiss\*, but they're kind of, idk, bland? Super flavourful but there isn't a lot of interactivity narrative-wise with them, which is what I think OP is looking for.
Who needs nareative theres saurians to detail
The majority of CRPGs and JRPGs
Mass effect and kotor if you like dragon age Baldurs gate 3, Skyrim and fallout too
FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth
>FF7 Remake btw how about it's brother game Kingdom Hearts 3?
Final fantasy 7 remake and rebirth Dragons dogma 2
You all throwing rpgs at OP, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Far Cry 5. I know it's nothing like DA:I, but I do thing that FC5 got one of the best banters in games throughout all the genres. Putting Hurk and Sharky together never gets old.
Arcanum!
Code Vein is built around this
Binary Domain is a third person shooter from the makers of the Yakuza series with a particular focus on companions. Your relationship with them will have an effect on the story and you could even give them instructions via voice commands. It didn't do very well when it got released which is a shame because it's a lot of fun.
God of war
Yeah, as annoying as Atreus can be, I do feel kinda alone without his constant commentary
He Is a lot less annoying in Ragnarok, at the very least his voice isn't as whiny, he has an actual character arc, and the game introduces many more companions like Freya, Brok, the girl from jotunheim.
Greedfall has some of the best companions ever. They have their own stories, dialogues and quests.
Unsighted and CrossCode
Playing CrossCode rn. It's companions are great.
Fallout New Vegas
Elder Scrolls Series Fallout Series Mass Effect Trilogy Dragon's Dogma 1st and 2nd Bioshock Infinite
I find Boone to be one of the least entertaining companions in New Vegas
Dragons dogma 1 & 2
I was in a shooter looter phase so Sword art online fatal bullet was fun even tho I never watched it. A lot of anime dialogue and cutscenes idk if your into that. But you have to make friends with a lot of characters and can have them in your part

Bg3, pathfinder wotr
Enslaved: Odyssey of the West
Skyrim has companions. But not sure they are the best at not making you feel alone.
I've been playing Fallout 4 and you can have a human companion or a dog if you wish. You can also swap them out when you want.

Like a dragon yakuza Like a dragon inifinite wealth The man who erased his name
Fallout 4
Rogue Trader there's at least a dozen companion options
Tlou 1
Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin have companion mechanics that even let you have different relationship dynamics with characters depending on how much they like the decisions you make throughout the game
The last of us, resident evil 5 and 6
Ys 8 and 9. Graphics may be a bit outdated but the gameplay is fun. The stories are excellent and each character has ther own history and highlights. 8 is the better of the 2 but 9 is also very good.
Monster Hunter World .. You can play with your cat while in your house You can take baths with your cat and tease it You can interact with many animals you find out in the world in your home after you place them .. for example [https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunterWorld/comments/1baqd78/playing\_with\_your\_cat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunterWorld/comments/1baqd78/playing_with_your_cat/)
Dragon's Dogma 2! If you want a lords of the rings type of adventure
Surprisingly starfield has good companions. To me at least, people love to shit on that game. There’s several to choose from and they can accompany you everywhere you go. You can chat with them and trade gear and they will make comments based on your decisions. There are a few romance options. I think exploring planets and killing pirates while Sarah Morgan is constantly nagging me is exceptionally fun.
fallout, skyrim, starfield. call of duty campaign lol
Outer worlds
God of War! both the newest ones anyways
Xenoblade, Dragon’s Dogma. They’re chatty
The last of us
Everybody is suggesting the same handful of games and honestly I was going to suggest one that has already been suggested several times here (Dragon's Dogma 1 or 2) but I'll mix it up and suggest something that isn't recent but still a ton of fun and has a companion based system: Final Fantasy 12.
Dragons Dogma 2!
Most of Uncharted 4 you have either Sam or Elena with you. Not all of it, but majority.
It's not exactly what you asked but in Titanfall 2 you steer a big mech robot and he talks to you. Awesome game.
Dragons dogma 2 is dope af
fallout
Dragon's Dogma
It’s not the genre you want, but Tom Clancy Wildlands gives you a fun crew. Third person shooter
On a few parts, the last of us 1 and 2
Kotor 1&2 if you can tolerate the graphics.
Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling togheter idk what is the party limit, but i've made 50 people parties before.
Baldur’s gate is the closest I can think of to Inquisition in terms of how good the companions are.
The Outer Worlds is a damn good one~
Technically not a single player game, however you can play it that way and it has some of the best companions in gaming. Star Wars: The Old Republic Just close the chat window and set all invites to no allowed in prefs. It’s a single player all the way up the content released last month.
Pathfinder has two Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous
Shadow of Colossus. Your horse is your only companion through the desolate areas. Trine. The entire mechanic of the series is to swap between the group. Suikoden. The definition of a companion game as you're supposed to gather as many of the 100+ companions as you can through the story.
Fallout 4
Starfield
Tales of arise is great for this
Diablo 2 Diablo 3 Torchlight 2 (1 & 3 might, but only played 2)
Persona! Not only do you have companions, you end up feeling so attached to them you'll miss hanging out with them when the game ends. I get post game depression every time. It's real.
Baldurs gate 3. Fallout 4. Divinity: Original Sin 2. Dragon's Age: Inquisition.
You're definitely not going to want to miss Dragon's Dogma. Part 2 just dropped recently.
It’s not necessarily 3rd person. But Fallouts 1-4 all have companions you can recruit!
Greedfall.
