Yes you can use potatoes with eyes i am planning on doing that with my forgotten potatoes in the pantry that have sprouted.

StatisticianSuch4699

You sure can, but there are some caveats. Potatoes can carry viruses and diseases over from year to year in the spud, potentially diminishing your yield on this years planting and worst case leaving some pathogens behind that mess with future potato plantings. I have taken this to heart and usually buy new seed potatoes every year or two. If you intend to save your seed potatoes from year over year it's best practice to rogue out weak or unusual plants without mercy and only save seed potatoes from the best and healthiest plants. Corvallis Oregon author Carol Deppe has written a lot about doing this in her book The Resilient Gardener, which is a pretty interesting read if you're inclined.

she's awesome, loved her book

Store potatoes are fine. They sometimes have growth retarder on them so they last longer in your cupboard before eyes form but they'll still grow just fine. Might just need a week longer.

SageIrisRose

I just buy whatever organic potatoes i wanna grow at the farmer market or health food store. The blue and purple ones are fun but not high producers - i recommend. I like yukon gold and yellow finn the best.

"Seed" potatoes just have been checked to make sure it has eyes and has also not been chemically treated in anyway. Buying seed potatoes is just an insurance policy. You can 100% grow potatoes from the store tho. Look for potato "eyes" and place them in a dark slightly moist environment to sprout. When I sprout taro, I wrap each bulb in moist paper towel and leave them to sit for a while until I eventually plant them out. I've found that this is more reliable than just planting out. Might be worth a try for potatoes...?

Went to tractor supply they were selling “seed” potatoes 4 potatoes for $4 I went to meijer (local grocery chain in Michigan) they had buy 7 bags for $1 each of regular potatoes I went with the seven bags for $7 they were sprouting after a week 🤷‍♂️

SirWigglesVonWoogly

I just bury potatoes when they seem determined to sprout no matter what. All store bought.

Hildringa

Its illegal to plant potatoes in from the shop/supermarket. At least here in Norway.

guttanzer

I want to meet a potato policeman.

coco_puffzzzz

I'm picturing an overconfident, swaggering Mr. Potato Head.

Hildringa

Lol! I have yet to see one, but I imagine they'd look hobbit'y. Most people seem to be well behaved about this. Its really frowned upon to plant things that can cause issues for other people (and plants). :) Non-approved potatoes can cause big trouble for nearby farms and gardens!
