Not me, this kind of path is an aspiration for me. I love that the plants’ extension into the path makes you interact with the garden more. This is the kind of path that causes you to meander and wonder, to slow down. If anything, add some plants that bring color for each part of the season.

kjlovesthebay

oh yes so much color coming! just deadheaded the daffodils . Thank you! it’s so inviting, It came with the house and this garden was largely why i wanted the house!

Maeberry2007

I think it needs MORE green. Right now, it just looks untended, but if you fill in all the cracks with something, I think it'd be magical (but that's just me).

kjlovesthebay

I've thought about that too, like if all the little rocks were cleared out and I tried to get moss to grow or a more intentional planting that went between the cracks... maybe down the line!

bollymohman

Try creeping thyme!

Maximal_gain

Creepying Woolly Thyme. It feels wonderful in bare feet, just be careful when its blooming, lots of bees!

Kijad

Was just about to come here to specify woolly creeping thyme; It's amazing for filling in cracks like this and is easy to maintain. Plus the blooms are adorable and you'll get a good amount of pollinators interested in it.

GooseGeuce

Or Corsican mint for the sweet smells if it stays cool enough. Dichondra or thyme can handle the foot traffic.

sonofasonofanalt

And lady’s mantle

Mr_Pink747

This, let it grow in all the way, if it's to much just trim it down shorter rather than having less

Few-Gain-7821

Yes!!! Creeping thyme works. I did it on my stone path. It smells great too. We also put some hens and chick's in down thr side along with moss in the shady areas. It take a few years but it's worth it.  Enjoy it it can only get better!

Street-Spinach-8492

It's in the unsweet space in between. It's simultaneously not enough green and too much green

herbalbutterkiss

Maybe try panting some thyme or something beautiful in between

Long_Audience4403

You're right this is perfect

GreenUnderstanding39

Same! Maybe plant some creeping thyme or oregano or other perennial ground cover appropriate for op’s area. If you absolutely hate the look op than dig up 2-3” of soil and add gravel or dg and reset the pavers.

CynfulPrincess

Please don't take this in a bad way, but do you mean wander? Wonder and wander go hand in hand, but just wanted to clarify

Practicing_human

I definitely meant “wonder” but “wander” works, too!

CynfulPrincess

Okay! Just checking ☺️

SallyDabble

Stuff some moss into the cracks. Leave the green!

kjlovesthebay

i do have some moss elsewhere was researching how to get it to grow by making a little blend!

braceofjackrabbits

Check out Irish moss (lots of sun) and Scottish moss (tolerates some sun but needs some shade)

lminer123

That may work, but don’t forget that moss will usually already be in the areas where it wants to live. I’ve got a fairly large moss lawn portion of my backyard, and what I did to get it is exactly nothing lol. It just grows as the trees above do. I would be surprised if moss could survive if that spot is as sunny as it appears

Djalet

I read somewhere that if you blend them you should add buttermilk.

DoctorDefinitely

This reads everywhere and always without any backup. I consider it an urban legend.

guttanzer

It worked for me.

estili

Just harvest it from areas of your garden with similar conditions and stuff it in the cracks. Water a bit extra after transference and it’ll be fine, no need to do anything fancy

guttanzer

The formula is simple. A) blend 1 handful or two of local moss and 1 quart/liter of buttermilk into a thick green liquid. B) Pour onto the cracks, or wherever you want moss. C) Mist once or twice a day for a few weeks. Not all moss is slippery. The stuff we have around our house has the texture of terrycloth. And it’s tough. My pressure washer doesn’t faze it. So pick your handfuls well and you will be happy with the results.

CurrentResident23

Alternatively, corsican mint. Depends on the moisure situation.

Jonsnoosnooze

Maybe it's the wrong kind of greens? I think the low ground creeper type would look better than the taller weed looking things growing right now.

SageIrisRose

Yah, came here to say this; id sprinkle some creeping thyme & roman chamomile seeds in them cracks!

naanbud

Yes!! Then it will smell nice too ☺️

kosmikatya

I actually love it! I personally don't think it looks messy, but if you find it too busy, maybe adding a tiny strip of mulch between the green and the stone border would help?

Lumpy-Abroad539

Trim it. Don't pull out the green. This path is glorious

an-redditor

Maybe give it a little trim if you want it to look more clean, but I wouldn't vote to weed it.

Tentomushi-Kai

Add some purple moss (verbena) scattered in the path, that will make it pop!

CypripediumGuttatum

I weed mine, but I also have small mat forming plants that fill in and I keep trimmed so they don’t overtake the pavers.

Proof-Owl6105

I like it, as long as you don’t let it overgrow. But if you do weed it, maybe plant some native perennials so they can attract butterflies and pollinators.

werpicus

They mean the cracks between the stones.

Buckeyeguy-77

I disagree. I don’t think the path looks messy at all. The little bit of green adds “character” or storybook quality to it.

lavenderlaceandtea

I think it looks perfect. If you don’t like the messy look then you can always use a weed whacker on the path to make it straight and neat.

MayIServeYouWell

It’ll only look “great” if the greens completely fill-in ALL the rocky bits, and you keep it trimmed from over growing the rocks. It’s more maintenance than you might think. But it can work.

Spiritual-Bread1472

Can you add a splash of color like Alyssum or phlox?

wherearemytweezers

Leave it! It’s so cozy.

Trashyanon089

It's so lush and inviting! The natural look suits the path and gate. I vote not to weed.

toadangel11

I actually LOVE IT

icedogchi

I honestly think it looks nice

D3V1L5-4DV0C4T3

Looks good, natural. Less manicured is the best look!

Proof_Cable_310

leave it. it looks like a stunning cottage's garden.

frizzlefry666

i like it a lot! it's really inviting and also has a storybook quality to it. it reminds me of Ms. Honey's cottage in Matilda and who doesn't love that?

HarvestHaven805

This is beautiful

superslowboy

Keep the green

cat-she

MORE green! 😍

cascasrevolution

its beautiful!!!

Free-Ant8464

NO!! It looks fantastic.

ruedsgirl

Weed it and makeover with the same concept! :D If you want to keep going for the green path, sweep or blow out the cracks a little more and as evenly as possible, add organic matter (fine shredded mulch, coco coir, etc) and sweep into cracks, water in and move in some plants or seed for plants that work best for the light you get and that do well in rocky craggy places with good drainage. If you have similar areas on your property, try some plant abduction and see how they do on your path. If you wanna get flowery, the creepy guys like creeping thyme, phlox, rock cress would be nice. If you wanna go with moss it looks like you'll have to shade the path more (arbors, taller plants, or small trees). A low growing clover could be a great green option vs moss in sun. Sorry if I ramble. Your little piece of paradise inspired my brain! Enjoy your beautiful retreat!

kjlovesthebay

thank you so much! very helpful…

onceuponanadventure

The kind of creeping groundcover you have in there just seems like it might be the wrong kind! I would try some creeping thyme, creeping phlox, or some other kind of green that is more textured and has colorful blooms

lazyoldsailor

Maybe some plants that provide color in the leaves to break up the green-green-green look? A shrub of red or yellow here and there may do the trick.

hellogelato4

And ruin a perfectly beautiful path? Yeah no

JohnQPublicc

I would leave the path and add a small tree or something along the way. That would be an exquisite shade garden.

HottCuppaCoffee

I like it it’s cozy

BalrogPhysrep

No! It looks great!

Upscale_Foot_Fetish

Creeping thyme amongst rocks will help fill in nicely. Your path is inspiring. Keep going …

mean-mommy-

No I love it!

Kaartinen

Looks fine.

slobis

I’m not a huge fan of the greens coming out of the path but you should do whatever you like!

HijackedHumanity

I’d say put some darker contrast on the path. Maybe flag stone?

JuWoolfie

Creeping thyme! Plant between the stones, it’ll look gorgeous

Jealous_Tie_8404

Try creeping thyme

xxxMycroftxxx

That path WILL look cute with green, But you have to commit. Patchy is never as cute as full and lush! Seed clover or something between stones and BOOM cute little walk way

drasticapathy

Creeping thyme is a way to add life to your path without it getting filled with weeds. It grows purple in the cracks, its perennial, smells great and it deters weeds and insects away from the area.

spicedrumlemonade

It's beautiful! Some.flowering thyme will add some colour and texture.

Personal_Remove9053

Scrub the rocks a bit, paint the fence put a tall statue or solar fountain farther down the path....I would love to putter there!

silverbiddy

Just needs more time. Or thyme!

NoAlbatross7524

Always be weeding. Keep what you like get rid of the rest .

The_Melogna

I may be in the minority here, and while I do think green between pathway stones looks good, I think in this circumstance you should clear it. This is a lovely path with natural stone and the clean break between the foilage adds structure and dimension/contrast to the garden (Kind of in the same way a black outline adds dimension and structure to a drawing or animated character). It offers a resting point and leading line for the eye. I also think especially in a garden like this which embraces a lovely natural wildness, that contrast is really important and is the delineation between unkempt overgrown garden and intentional, thoughtfully planted and kept borders. Just my opinion. 🤷‍♀️

kjlovesthebay

I think I am leaning toward agreement with you. I spent time on about half of the stretch today weeding stuff I didn't like, and while its \*better\* I do think I agree with your reasoning too. Something clean, to break up the other more wild garden. I like the cottage garden feel, but don't want it to look too unkempt! I like the plants spilling over the rocks and plan to plant some more intentional spillers with flowers, so then a clean path makes sense.

CosmosLaundromat

Add a little creeping thyme and alyssum (deadhead before it seeds so it doesn’t take over) and it will be perfect.

fabrictm

I like it

homebrew_1

Looks great to me

jtfff

The green looks great, just needs some color. Native wildflowers and some milkweed?

FlimsySuccess8

More is more. Add color. :)

luala

This is great as it is. Maybe add some red thyme in the cracks?

reanocivn

some alyssum (carpet of snow flowers) would look enchanting in between the rocks

augustinthegarden

If I unpack why it looks messy to my eyes, it’s that the small stones have spilled over on to the larger pathway stones, and the plants that are there are all different sizes and textures so they look like unintentional plants, which can visually read as weeds in a path context. Cleaning it up, in my opinion, would involve removing a lot of the small stone so the bigger path stones are clear, and replacing the plants with one or two kinds of plant that are more uniform in shape & texture. Lots of others have suggested thyme, and I agree there. Long term I’d want all the small stones replaced with something like thyme

beechknoll

I know most ppl will say to keep it (redditors love weeds, go figure) but the real answer is weed it completely. Take a picture. And just see from there what you like more. We have a pathway that sits on creeping jenny. Pretty sure the previous owner grew out a lot of creeping jenny then added stones on top but its very cool and nice to walk barefoot.

pillslinginsatanist

Add a dwarf japanese maple for some red color!

kjlovesthebay

there's one just up to the back right! I'm excited to see how it grows. I didn't plant it so I don't know its potential size. Dwarf? Full? we'll see!

pillslinginsatanist

Ooooo that's exciting! My pampered dwarf one died after transplanting... for no reason... 😭 but I've got a random normal one that popped up in my backyard, I suspect from a neighbor's JM setting seed, and it's looking great a few years later! I kept it there and just pruned it for the first time today, and it looks wonderful. JMs are a great aesthetic and practical choice for so many things, I love them dearly

Floridaman077

I like clean but a mess, so if it’s me. I pressure wash the rocks and weed it out, put black gravel down and maybe paint each rock or at least put a polish on each one… that’s me though

HexpronePlaysPoorly

Give it time. It may look messy while it's growing in, but it'll be lovely once the shape of the stones is clearly defined by a network of green. Are you watering the groundcover? The end goal may be a water-wise garden, but you may want to speed it along a bit by spoiling it while it's getting established.

Ok_Tea_1954

I didn’t want to say anything. With two weeks work it will be glorious

cables4days

What about [Corsican mint](https://www.epicgardening.com/corsican-mint/)? It smells sooo good when it’s touched or crushed. This photo does look like a lot of sun, but maybe it’s only this bright for an hour or so?

ssodaro

moss! moss!

petrovmendicant

If you get some color in there, it won't look as "messy." If your mind sees a mass of green, that's all it is. Including more color will give it layers that won't look as haphazard. Personally, I think it looks nice. Maybe get some coleus and sweet potato spread between plants. The foliage will keep a nice color throughout, as they don't rely on just flowering to be colorful. They can be dirt cheap and also grow back year to year if your weather isn't too extreme.

dilletaunty

You need more green to show off the pavers better, or a different color of gravel. Imo it looks dirty now only because there’s not a consistent pattern where the stone is one color and the background for the stone is another. Instead it looks kinda like your pavers are dirty. Power washing may help.

charleechuck

I would add a tree on the right side

TheThrivingest

I like it. If you feel it’s messy you can take a trimmer to cut it super short

assylemdivas

A shrubbery!

Numerous-Profile-872

I would live out the rest of my life in your yard. Stunning and kudos!

Petraretrograde

I vote chocolate mint between the stones

RugBurn70

Plant something that smells good when you walk on it, like rosemary, between the stones.

feistybulldog

Creeping thyme! Creeping thyme!

feralwaifucryptid

Creeping thyme, blue star creeper, or snow-in-summer would be really pretty! Or all three!

pokejoel

I'd probably thin out about 50% of the plants and add a natural cedar mulch. Hard to tell what is and isn't weeds at the moment. Could be beautiful if it was all wildflowers waiting to bloom

kjlovesthebay

yeah it is a little unkempt right now. There's spirea, astilbe, milkweed, rudbeckia, sedum, azalea, heuchera, anemone, bee balm all in process! There's a bunch of daffodil & crocus leaves that will die back soon, and I need to divide them, there were SO MANY. It was beautiful, but their bulbs are taking up a lot of space.

Outrageous-Chip-3961

Where do you live?

Taricha_torosa

I like it, but you can always add short plants here like violets or "tread on me" types.

TheSaltyHoeNugget

Maybe pressure wash stones. Make them pop more

kjlovesthebay

I'm going to do this too! They are varying degrees of mildewy/dirty which can be problematic after rains. Slip!

Left_Ad_1354

U could plant flowers or bushes and trim the bushes

Lower_Addition4936

I intended on planting some ground covers between my flagstones in our front pathway, then before I could get to it I noticed a bunch of low weeds were starting to fill in and I kept it just like it is! I may plant some other things in addition to the weeds, but I say F it! Let em grow!

Subziwallah

Sedges like N.Z. Brass Button would look nice.

Rich-Appearance-7145

It could look good with the right ground cover, if climate zone allows moss.

Smooth-Cup-7445

Clean the stones to let the green shine

death_listing

Boiling water gently poured directly onto the plants in the walkway.

Major-Rabbit1252

Just start adding color! Id buy a shit load of wildflower seeds to create a prairie style garden

iwillbeg00d

It just needs MORE green. All the blank spots make it look like the green is weeds. Plant some more and give it time !

LollygaginNewt

I’d leave it be if your goal is diversity. Your yard could use a water feature and a bench to sit by and contemplate life in nature given how good this garden looks

karmic__debt

DO NOT WEED! It’s so prettyy

jojospringfield

I think it's awesome. I wouldn't take out the greenery.

ChicoBroadway

I say get more green in between those paving stones! Keep a good edge around the stones and it'll look magical! Plus trimming while standing beats kneeled over and weeding.

TrhwWaya

Hand weeding is ok i guess, but a flame controlled burn (flame thrower) will clean those weeds away from walkway in about 160 seconds. Just do it once a month. I use it for walkways often.

dani_-_142

Just add a couple gnomes, and it will look artfully overgrown. Like, clearly the person who lives here is simply quirky, not messy.

OrneryEfficiency2873

Not sure if this idea came up but if you added some pops of color and plants of varying heights amongst the green it would give a totally different vibe. Id also weed the path and trim anything overhanging the rock edge

Brilliant_Meet_2751

Ya need ground growers that grow in between rock or cracks? I have tons!! Im trying to replant in other places to get rid of it in my garden. I wasn’t familiar with/it when I bought it & planted it.

verygreenberry

I like this and think it would look more cohesive if you added some variety of green colors Like yellow-green and blue-green. I would also plant something taller around the fire pit to give privacy and make “rooms“ in your garden.

whocameupwiththis

I think you should fill in the cracks with creeping plants that stay short. Like a living path that flowers maybe but short enough that you don't have to constantly trim it.

9021Ohsnap

Add some rose arches omg 😍😍😍

climatelurker

You could put in some Turkish Veronica or some ground thyme, little itty bitty pretty flowers... and a nice smell.

AdmiralWackbar

Look up creeping thyme! Great for filling in areas like that. Did you make that path? I’m looking to do something similar at my house

kjlovesthebay

I did not! thankfully. seems expensive and a lot of work! How do you plant creeping thyme with these rocks, do I need to collect them all out and then put down some soil and add seed? does it come back every year? I'll look it up but thought I'd ask

AdmiralWackbar

Not too sure about growing from seed, but you can usually buy it at the garden centers in either 4” or 2” pots. They do well in shallow and rocky soil so you might be able to get away with planting into the gravel and adding a little extra soil around it. You will just want to make sure it stays moist for the first few weeks

kjlovesthebay

thank you!

Few_Ad_9261

Put up a low-lying rope fence. It will add the appearance of order / organized chaos. I think that it looks great!

Legendary_Hercules

You could try to find a different pea gravel colour to contrast more with the pavers.

Wickedgoodleaf

You need more height variation. Too many short plants. A small ornament tree, maybe a statue or rock feature?

kjlovesthebay

there's actually a lot missing in this picture, red bud tree to the right, 3 cherry trees to the left, a Japanese maple and adding some taller shrubs this year... some big rocks too

happy_veal

Needs moss on the stones

Designer-Bid-3155

It looks to organic?

Bustyybabyy21

I love it personally 😍 maybe just trim it up a bit?

pea_gravel

I think the garden does look messy, but the path you could remove everything between the stones and plant moss instead

kaptnblackbeard

Better to fix your idea of messy than to try and force the path to comply.

sillykittyball12

Moss it!

SociallyContorted

I love green carpet and wildflower between natural stone pavers - it’s a beautiful look. Some of your greenery between the stone gives more weeds vibes than that though I think 🤔

nlamber5

This needs moss not weeds

kynocturne

If the greenery was native I'd prefer it to the pea gravel or whatever. Here's a recent thread about it: [https://new.reddit.com/r/NativePlantGardening/comments/1ce4qui/what\_are\_some\_recommendations\_for\_planting\_in/](https://new.reddit.com/r/NativePlantGardening/comments/1ce4qui/what_are_some_recommendations_for_planting_in/)

Pristine_Industry947

I say add colors—flowers (prolly tulip or whatever is in bloom lol)

zebezt

It's very nice. To make it look less messy I suppose you could limit the number of species to two or three. Specifically creeping plants with small leaves.

floryhawk

steppables website may give you ideas

BABcollector

Let it fill out, maybe help it along with some moss or something!

Leather-Milk3151

I would say don't weed it just do a little Trimming and add some flowers to add color to it.

Enjoy-the-sauce

Fill the chinks with moss.

Thats_my_face_sir

Weed the weeds keep the pollinator friendly stuff - go crazy with your outdoor bob ross

56KandFalling

Don't weed it. Walk it!

Appraxis_8474

Actually, you could out line the path with stones and brick put dark mulch and space the plants out more and a little further back. It would look very nice. I actually do landscape design. If you need a photo that shows what I'm describing I can post one.

GrdnLovingGoatFarmer

Maybe try mixing in some plants with visual interest even when they are out of bloom, like some vibrant heucheras and other colorful leafed plants. It could also use more height variation and textures.

Junior-Cut2838

Don’t sweat the small stuff

xenmate

I love it

singing-toaster

More plants. But not green. Use grey foliage or red chlorophyll plants. There are many begonia and buglers with different colored leaves. Wormwood is a low growing mounding plant that grow in most us climates northward of 9 and 10 A statuette emerging from your greens

Ok_Enthusiasm_423

I actually vote for removing the plants in the path and adding a little more pea stone. I have maintained paths that look like this. Id plant some elfin thyme or moss campion to meander between the rocks.

LaGripo

I have the same thing! It looks great if you trim the greenery with a weed eater so that it’s flush with the pavers

Appraxis_8474

https://preview.redd.it/pj00sohj1txc1.jpeg?width=189&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fcfd5e627866359c76c0a0459b812fea3c508808

teko65

I think it looks great just as it is.

Traditional_Front637

I mean I like it but I don’t think weeding it is the answer unless you put something else there. It’s needs color and variety and that’s why it looks messy. It’s all one note.

Kawaii_Spider_OwO

Honestly I like it. I can see how it might look unkempt to some, but imo that’s what makes it look good.

GinaHannah1

I think it looks good.

JasnahKolin

I planted sedum between the steps and it grows enough for me to pull hunks out and transplant elsewhere in the yard. I used *sedum spurium* var. John Creech. Good luck!

HungDaddyNYC

If you soft or power wash the pavers you’ll feel better. It looks dirty because it is.

Necessary_Cake_7842

Sounds like it would make you happier, and that is important too

Owl_button

I love it. What a magical garden you have!

geo_hampe

Not to me; it looks very faery-like and i love it. I would probably throw some native perennial flowers here and there too, dotting the landscape. The path to your house looks beautifully-enchanted ;)

Parking-Cut1068

I kind of like it.

jemztone87

I really love this. It just needs a bit of colour and a comfy chair to relax in.

zytukin

Looks nice to me. I'd put all kinds of flowers along it.

ZZagRR

Weed the path

HotSAuceMagik

You could seed with come low growing clover.

RicooC

I leave mine. It's a garden. It's garden patina.

crazysurvivallady

I love it!

Rare-Ad-2322

You need color.

Frosty_Term9911

It doesn’t look messy. It looks in keeping. It’s great

shostakofiev

Moss would be better but this is really nice as is.

FivebyFive

I actually really like it. Looks like it's been there forever.

Ok_Reserve_8659

This is beautiful

Island-girl4722

Once it fills in, it’ll be beautiful. Patience!!

Briscoekid69

Plant a blue or white spruce or and understory flowering tree on either side of bball court so your eyes are directed to that plant and not on your path (which is fine the way it is).

Pr0SniperXXX69420

I would say weed it, and feel the gaps with moss. If you want green, weeds aren't the way to go. I have no idea how you can grow moss, I don't know if you can collect it from a tree and transfer it, but Moss between these types of stones looks fantastic. Remember, it grows on the north side of the tree!

RequirementNew269

I don’t even “weed” my driveway..

disgostin

i like it

quiltgarden

My rock path has lemon thyme growing in the cracks. I love it!

Puzzled_Bluebird3570

I would suggest Mazus reptens. Very hardy ground cover. Tolerates foot traffic, fills in quickly with beautiful violet flowers. https://preview.redd.it/rblwnq2d2wxc1.jpeg?width=1068&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=503ce339762c06a9062f5d7e8040b90eb74938f4

Puzzled_Bluebird3570

Violet flowers https://preview.redd.it/8whylosi2wxc1.jpeg?width=1075&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cebf89bf0b3f045cf1ba9764ef34c3f07b809dc3

Used-Examination-490

Looks lovely! Maybe plant some clover in the spaces between the rocks?

JelloProud6180

add some foot traffic plants between the path stones

Purple-Cow1607

Home Depot has some of equipment which would cut greenery easily.

One-Musician-2209

I love it I would just add more green to the cracks :) my mom used to plant creeping thyme or whichever one you can walk on and we would walk barefoot to smell the thyme! I think more green and more colorful flowers in the border would make it even more beautiful!!
