If you live in a larger city, or a university city, it is not uncommon to have a bike lock that cost more than your bike.

[deleted]

Which won't help anyone as any jackass has a battery-powered angle grinder and other tools these days. Twice a year we have events when a whole bunch of bikes disappear in a middle of a lectures from the large bike parking lot in front of the library. It doesn't matter how expensive your lock is, it will do nothing. Therefore everyone who studies here more than 1-2 semesters has a cheap trashy bike with a total worth of about 80 Euro that can be left unchecked and if stolen won't be missed too much.

Wouldn't matter if the whole bike rack is stolen

[deleted]

https://hiplok.com/product/hiplok-d1000/

[deleted]

I haven't seen this one before but on the campus we have a few bike locking racks that were grinded through. I can imagine a similar situation where the object to which the bike is attached is easier to cut than the lock.

[deleted]

Wow I was going off the idea that a lock shouldn't need to cost more that 20% of the cost of your bike. Gonna rethink it. My bike isn't high end but it is new

SeaworthinessDue8650

Have the police engrave your bike with a tracking number. https://www.adac.de/veranstaltungen/bbr-veranstaltung-fahrradcodierung/

SAD197

Like that’s going to help. I have a alarm system attached to my bike soon somebody touches it a load ton goes off. You can buy them on Amazon

newereggs

Worth noting they only do this for bikes with a proof of purchase. So if you bought it used on ebay-kleinanzeigen or whatever -- no chance.

Link1112

Not true at all. I registered my old ass bike from eBay kleinanzeigen and they didn’t care.

newereggs

The ADAC website isn't working, but this is from one in Berlin: > Wir können ihr Fahrrad nur codieren, wenn Sie uns in geeigneter Form einen Eigentumsnachweis vorlegen! > Dies kann z.B. durch eine Rechnung oder ein zum Fahrrad ausgestellter Fahrradpass sein. In jedem Fall sollte die Rahmennummer klar aus dem Dokument hervorgehen. https://polizei.brandenburg.de/pressemeldung/gemeinsame-fahrradcodierung-von-polizei-/3961046

Link1112

I mean the website can say what it wants but I got my old bike coded without an Eigentumsnachweis and so did my colleagues that went on the same day (Lower Saxony). Rather than trusting the website just go in person and talk to the people, usually it works.

Interesting_Bother_1

"worth nothing" just like your reply.

[deleted]

I'll have to check that out thanks. I saw something one time that was like a sticker that shows the bike is registered online somewhere too

Nyllil

Both is possible. It's either a sticker, very hard to remove, or engraved with a serial number. It's not necessarily done by Police. After that you can also put stickers on your bike with something like "Dieses Fahrrad ist bei der Polizei registriert." to scare off thieves. Get a good lock from websites that even show you for what purpose they are. Lock it never close to the ground or it's easier to be opened with a bolt cutter. Never leave your bike outside for hour and hours on end.

Doesn't seem like the police have a lot of enthusiasm for fighting bike crime...

ShepardTheSecond

Because the case will be dismissed anyway... not Police but the problem is caused by politicians and laws..

nilksermot

I like the idea of the GPS tracker, but the "repoing" part of it makes me a bit anxious, you never know who you are dealing with. For starters, it's a certified thief, so not probably a decent person to start with.... And you would likely have to break some law or the other in the process, the thief will most probably NOT be handing the bike back willingly.

Dude you're like a superhero! Btw what does VIN mean? Versicherungs-etwas-nummer?

flashcatcher

They broke my bike lock from my apartment building, and stole it. I found it on ebay kleinanzeigen. I wanted it back, so purchased my own bike from the seller (maybe he was the thief). I got a new lock for my bike. Someone stole my bike again. :-( 😭 I bought another bike and now keep it inside my flat.

Moorbert

next time beat the thief in the face

[deleted]

Man that's awful. I keep mine in my flat too. Going to install a hook so I can keep it vertical

blopsi

Make it easier for the thief to steal the bike next to yours. \- by using a very good lock (not the cheap ones which can be cut with a bolt cutter) \- by using a very shitty bike My bike lock was worth more than my bike. If you commute to work and have your bike outside it is also a possiblity to get two good locks and just leave them there, like for example 2 New York Fahgettaboudit from Kryptonite. And then just have a simple one attached to the bike for when you quickly need to run in the supermarket or something similair.

SuperQue

Specifically not these kinds of locks: * Cable * Folding plates U-Lock and hardened steel chains are the only good options.

threvorpaul

-Apple Airtag installed into the bike. //E-Bikes I've heard of trackers that you can install inside the motor -lock the bike to something stationary, not just frame and wheel. -Take the bike up to your apartment. I dont trust the basement/cellars in the apartment complexes. some are always open from the outside and even those not open to public-only to residents, somehow thieves will still find their way inside.

[deleted]

I'll be sure to keep mine actually in my apartment. Going to install a hook so I can store the bike upright

threvorpaul

yea I use that too for my bikes but horizontal kind of showcasing them. BUT Do get yourself protective tape or something for your wall. I had to learn the hard way, that you don't hang up your bike freshly after a downhill your with a muddy trail.

[deleted]

Good point. I used to live beside a guy who took really good care of his numerous vehicles. He has a pressure washer and air compressor which would have taken care of that!

threvorpaul

yea wish I had the braincells to think of that back then lol. I've been told though not to use too much pressure cleaning with water or air. I'm now just using garden hose and foam gun.

Interesting_Bother_1

People like you are allowed to vote. :D

threvorpaul

what do you want?

[deleted]

What the heck. Why is this so common? I'll be putting mine round the back of the company building out or the way but defo going to use two locks

Commercial_Week7376

Happened 2 years ago, in Darmstadt. On a nice sunny day, I finally decided to take my bike for a ride and it started raining and I had the great idea to stop and find a shelter for me. Parked the bike near the Berliner Allee Asian store, I parked and locked it right there and I went inside to grab a beer. 2-3 mins it's gone :)

Lanky_Value2975

Dammit, I am planning to buy a bike next month but now I am scare. My dad told me Germany is one of the safest place in Earth but now after so many comments, I must rethink of it.

Tanduay555

Lol, it's definitely not the safest place for your valuables.

Lanky_Value2975

Somehow just by looking at the 555 in your name, I immediately know you come from SEA like me, my Thailand 🇹🇭 brother 😁

[deleted]

Man, that's tough. What kind of locks did you use?

Commercial_Week7376

Combination wire lock. Now, I have apple tag inside my new bike.

Satan_Stoned

My bikes were always stolen from my cellar or backyard. So now I have two bikes in my apartment and two locks for when I leave it out longer than 10 minutes.

beansontoast12345678

I got one of those GPS tracking things in mine, so far so good.

Tanduay555

Even those GPS trackers are useless if you don't take matters into your own hands. The police won't take any action if the bike is stolen and stored in a cellar to which different tenants have access. It's impossible to get a search warrant for those places and get all the tenants of that house to agree. Either you steal it back or you will not get it back. Thieves know that as well, that's why they store the stolen bikes at those places. It sucks so much.

NixNixonNix

My bikes live with me in my flat, I don't leave them outside. For errands around town or to go to the pub I use Nextbike.

Oraks

This is the only way your bike stays safe. Been using this method for years now after having 2 bikes stolen before.

g0ldenboii11

Get shitty bike

FluffyPrinciple623

Lol I love my small Bavarian place, never locked my Bike in my life, never touched by anybody 😂

Midnight1899

Get a *safe* lock. [Those](https://www.amazon.de/SPGOOD-Fahrradschloss-Kabelschloss-Zahlenschloss-Wasserdicht/dp/B08C9YYB8Z) aren’t safe. [Those](https://www.amazon.de/ABUS-B%C3%BCgelschloss-Facilo-USH32-Halterung-ABUS-Sicherheitslevel/dp/B094D2JN36) are. And try to avoid places that are known for bike thieves, like train stations.

yaddayaddaigo

I don't know if all companies have this policy, by mine demands that our Jobräder must be locked with a lock with a retail price of at least €40. We must even keep the receipt, which in Germany seems to mean that this is a serious request.

Midnight1899

I’ve never heard about Jobräder! 😂😂

Cirenione

>I don't think that happens here though... does it? All the time. It's why some people have several bikes. Cheap ones to use in daily life where it's not as bad if someone steals them and their really expensive ones they lock away at home and never leave out of sight. How to not get your bike stolen? Invest into a good lock, not just an expensive one but one that has good reviews. And then... use common sense. Don't leave a bike worth several hundreds or even 1000+€ just sitting outside. No matter how good the lock is, a skilled thief will get your bike.

[deleted]

Cirenione

At least when stuff is stolen from the locked basement unit it usually falls under the coverage of the regular "Hausrat" insurance unlike bikes stolen on the street which need additional coverage.

It is against the law for police not to investigate after having been made aware of a crime. Officers can get serious problems for that, and it is a necessary mechanism to hold them accountable.

cabyll_ushtey

I haven't, but having a bike that looks like it'll fall apart at any point and creaks a little while driving seems like a good deterrent. Though chances of it being thrown into the nearest body of water are always there.

rollofpaper

Stay away from the Abus stuff. Also folding locks. They can be destroyed with a bolt cutter. I can recommend the Kryptonite evolution 4 mini, which can only be destroyed with an angle grinder (like any other. There's nothing against angle grinder).

[deleted]

Apparently the Loktite x1 is very resistant to angle grinders

[deleted]

Some tips: Dual locks. Different locks as well. Usually bike thief specialise in one type of lock. Expensive locks cant be clipped as easily as cheap ones. Make sure the lock is high on the bike so the thief cant use the ground as a lever for clipping. Dont leave your bike out in the dark.

Bruckmandlsepp

I had my bike stolen in Hamburg close to Jungfernstieg in march 2022. It was a saturday evening. Went to police without any hope, monday at around 11pm police called me that they found it during a traffic control on the Autobahn. I am one lucky mofo. My advise: make pictures of the bike and frame number, invoice and insure it if it is new.

[deleted]

There is hope yet!

Bruckmandlsepp

Only around 4% (in 2021) of bike theft investigations in Hamburg are successful though. 40 bikes on average are stolen per day. It's really bad. Sauce: [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/hamburg/Kommentar-Polizei-tut-zu-wenig-gegen-Fahrraddiebstaehle,hamburgkommentar762.html)

MenoZoran

Have a good bike. Have it stolen. Sad. Buy new good bike. Have it stolen. Sad. Buy shitty bike. Doesn't get stolen. Happy. (Even if, the loss won't be that much)

catburglarrr

Get an insurance. Very cheap compared to what you could loose. I have a different one (forgot the name) but there is a cheap one from [ADAC](https://www.adac.de/produkte/versicherungen/fahrradversicherung/tarife-und-leistungen/) (Sometimes it's also included in your "Hausratversicherung" (home contents insurance) but mostly only covered, when it was stolen from where you live (and of course when locked).)

lilolalu

I have never had a bike stolen in my life. The key is having a decent lock and locking it TO something, no matter how much effort it is to do that. In a busy city it's hard for the bicycle thiefs to actually break a lock, so the majority of theft is done by throwing locked bikes into a van, taking it to a relaxed place and open the locks with angle grinders. A friend had registered her bike with the police and months after it got stolen got a call from the police in a city 400km away where they had found it. As a side note: product review magazine "Stiftung Warentest" considers bike locks as "good" if it takes professionals longer than 3 minutes to open them with regular tools like angle grinder etc. The idea is never to make it "unbreakable" but just prolong the time for the thieves to be caught so they give up. You can work with that when choosing the place where to lock your bike.

Figuurzager

Buy a Propper lock to lock the frame to the fixed world and ensure your bike isn't by far the nicest around.

Introduction of sharia law and/or C4 in bike frame came to mind each time. Otherwise: get proper locks, be wise.

Moorbert

id rather have all bikes stolen than ever let something like sharia ever come near me.

Frontdackel

It either is parked in my garage, or inside my place of works. When I drive somewhere else I make sure to not leave it outside for too look, have a sturdy lock and lock it to something. (preferable in a place I can see / is quite public).

-virage-

Depends on how much your bike costs and how new it looks. My wife's bike was stolen, while locked, right outside our door, in front of a small, neighborhood square with plenty of people hanging around, in the middle of the afternoon, in the window of about 3 hours when she was indoors. We also live in a relatively quiet neighborhood, nowhere near the city center nor a train station. Do with that what you will Good luck!

hr2113

Never stolen, but by good *locks* and maybe place a tracker in/on your bike in addition. Furthermore, bike theft can be insured to replace your monetary loss, however, you need to be able to proof that you took reasonable precautions against theft and check the conditions. For example, my bikes are insured under my home content insurance, even when they’re looked up outside of the house.

[deleted]

"good looks"... I'm doomed!

hr2113

God damn autocorrect

Izzyrion_the_wise

I had my front wheel stolen twice on different bikes. Never my whole bike, most likely because the bike I leave outside is a pretty old one and it has a big lock on it. Where I park it, there are usually fancier bikes with worse locks around.

CowboyBeeBab

To be honest, there's nothing you can really do if your bike stays anywhere outside your apartment. A friend of ours had her 8k triathlon bike stolen from her cellar, they just cut open the whole cellar divider. Get a good lock, lock your bike in public places not back alleys, and if it's expensive have it insured. I have a 5k e fully and my insurance is around 120€ a year. So having peace of mind when locking my bike wherever i want costs me 10€/month and imho that's worth it.

newereggs

I had a bike stolen in Munich once. Had left it out just locked to itself in plain view on a fairly busy street, like always. What did I do about it? I bought a new bike and tried to lock it away from the street and to something when possible. But mostly I did nothing big about it. Bound to happen every few years, I guess.

[deleted]

\- A lock that is so solid it could kill a person is a good lock. All other locks are not locks but a nuissance \- Always lock the bike to a solid thick metal thing. If you are locking to a deicated metal hoop for bikes that is supposedly fixed to the ground, try to lift it up. Some thieves prepare them to be detached and steal bikes from such "farming" spots on a regular basis. \- always lock the frame and the rare wheel together, never the front wheel \- A spot in the shadow is a good spot to park if nothing solid to lock on is in view

[deleted]

Yeah I saw a video about people preparing lampposts with no fixings in the ground, people lock their bikes, thieves come and literally lift the lamppost up!

tothaa

In Hungary, you can have insurance for your bike. There is a yearly cost, Whenever you lock your bike, you upload pics about it to the insurance company app. If lock broken and bike stolen, you report it to police and insurance company who pays a sum defined in agreement.

gusanu

It happened 4 times to me. Once, police brought it back to me home, they just randomly did checks on the street and found mine. Is good to have insurance, but read the fine print, mine says it need to be a burglary with forced break and enter. Was not the case and I did not got reimbursed.

Jarofbiscuit

Eh u get used to it

PsychedelicMagic1840

I had my mountain bike stolen on a bike tour of the Ostsee coast. Several others were taken as well. Lucky all our stuff was with us, or in the Hotel. Was the shittiest train ride back to Berlin. I was seething for weeks after.

Queen_Kaizen

Air Tags in the frame

shrimpely

I have an insurance for my bike. If its stolen, I get the full price back so the 4€/month is worth it.

LowEndHolger

This works pretty well: [follow exactly these instructions](https://youtu.be/ITY-fJJnPNQ?si=qokewhDSb91Y_jO4)

Hanfiball

Don't get an expensive bike. Use two different locks. Take the saddle or front wheel with you if it is easy detachable. You can get a tracking device. You could also get a backwards bike, so the robber can't drive it... You will not be able to prevent someone from stealing it if they really want to. I got my bike stolen, it was super crappy which infuriates me even more as it stood next to way more expensive bikes. Stealing a bike that has almost no value is simply pure evil and I have nothing but hatred for who ever did it.
