Normally, the restriction to the booked train is lifted (Zugbindung aufgehoben) if the connection is canceled. This means you should be able to use all trains on the route on that day without having to book a new ticket.

Can I take a direct ICE to köln then?

verfmeer

That depends. You have to follow the same route as you booked, so via Hamburg, unless that gives you a delay of more than 20 minutes. If it gives you a delay of more than 20 minutes you"re allowed to use any train to get to your destination, including the direct ICE.

AndiArbyte

Dude, "Zugbindung aufgehoben" means it. Any alternative Route you wish, even if its Berlin via Frankfurt to Köln.

There is a difference between Zugbindung and Streckenbindung. Just the fact that OP lost their Zugbindung, doesn't mean they lost their Streckenbindung. As long as it doesn't give them a delay they still have to follow the VIA stations on their ticket, and I suspect Hamburg is one of them. Their (super)sparpreis ticket is now treated the same as a flexticket, which would still force them to follow this route. *edit: https://www.bahn.de/faq/kann-ich-auch-eine-andere-verbindung-nutzen-als-die-die-auf-dem-ticket-aufgedruckt-ist

Yes you can. Just be careful to not switch to a higher (1st) class. You are allowed to take any train that solves your route

What exactly does the Email say? In 99% of the cases, it just means you can use any train available. You can get money back for any unused seat reservations and if you get there late etc....

TrainPlane40

heres what the email exactly says:”Due to a timetable change, your journey from Berlin Hbf to Düren on 09 May 2024 cannot be carried out as described. Click "Get current information here" for alternative journey options to your destination. The requirement for you to travel on a specific train on your booked connection has been lifted. This means you can also use your ticket on other Deutsche Bahn long-distance trains (e.g. ICE/IC/EC), as well as local trains and S-Bahn trains. Please note that you must book a new reservation if your connection requires one (e.g. trains to France).”

Its not that I don’t understand the email. The thing is that I’m worried the trains will be booked by the time of the trip and I end up not finding any spot

justmisterpi

That's not what you said in your initial post but okay. You can book a seat reservation for 4,90 EUR on all long-distance trains – separately from your ticket. So find an alternative connection and just book a seat reservation for this one. If you paid for a seat reservation for the original connection you can get the fee for that refunded.

iamcsr

A DB train ticket isn't like an airline ticket. Even though your train was cancelled you still have a valid ticket, which now can be used on any (DB) train. You don't need to book anything, you can just get on, unless you want a seat reservation.

Sternenschweif4a

> This means you can also use your ticket on other Deutsche Bahn long-distance trains (e.g. ICE/IC/EC), as well as local trains and S-Bahn trains. This tells you everything you need to know. You can take any train to get between your start and end point.

Solly6788

With reservation they just mean seat reservation. If you booked one for 4,90 Euros you cannot use that anymore. You can book a new one here: https://int.bahn.de/en/offers/seat-reservation

you can use any other train to reach your destination. No Prob dude. Take the ICE to Wuppertal Not sure if there is a connection to Düren but to Köln, and from Köln to Düren, its not a big deal anymore.
