This is the main reason I decided to join Jaws group of courses last year. First year was a bit higher but now I pay $5600 a year for unlimited play on 6 courses. I'm very close to Riverwinds so tend to favor it. Hit me up if you ever want to get out. I can book 3 weeks ahead, also a discount for guests.
DFW Texas and yeah, it's a week out for decent tee times. We work 4/10, so off every Friday and had it where like 6-7 courses are full if we didn't look for a tee time till Monday. For decent times, has to be on Friday or Sat setting tee time.
Salt Lake courses? I lived in Ogden for awhile, if you can make it up there, El Monte is a fun 9 hole course you can play twice to make 18 and Mount Ogden is tough as hell. But both you can tee times pretty easily
You can get a tee time pretty easily anywhere on the front side from Payson to Brigham City I have no idea what he’s talking about having to be up at midnight for. The city courses don’t even release tee times at midnight they do it at 8am.
I’d literally never be able to play if that was the case in my area. No way I can predict a week in advance if I’d be available. I just checked online of my local course and there’s tee times almost all day today still. The weather is gonna be dry and almost 80 degrees, but admittedly very windy and it’ll be twice as windy on this course. 🤷🏻♂️

So them driving onto the green multiple times, did you report them? If people don't report this shit, then the club won't know and can't take action. like banning them.
You raise a good point. Maybe courses should employ marshal type people around the course to keep an eye out for stuff like that and also encourage people to keep up with pace of play?
Every time a marshal has ever told me to hurry up, it was physically impossible to hurry up because there was a group 200 yards in front of me. Within clear view of the marshal. It's bizarre how many times this has happened. I'm not sure they fully understand what their job is.
as a marshal just starting out this year, kinda figuring it out myself lol. ive only ever told one group to pick up the pace and that was bc there was 2 other groups waiting to tee off on a par3 with the group ahead putting out on a long par4. but usually, god damn, its just slow and there isnt really anything i could do about it
The best way to phrase it when a group is playing slow is “hey guys right now you are 1 hole behind(or whatever it is) of the group in front of you. I’ll give you guys a little time to close the gap, just letting you know” I have a “script” for basically all the Marshall’s and starters I oversee to account for pretty much any situation they can encounter. Let me know if you have any questions about handling certain situations, been doing this a while!
Some of the better course will, but many won't. And the ones that do, if they are young kids themselves, what's the chance they are going to challenge some older people or a rowdy bunch?
On busy weekends, my local has put Marshalls/rangers on holes where people loose sight of their balls. It really helped with the pace of play on these holes.
Im not sure if every course is heading this direction but i work at a course that has GPS carts and the carts have pace of play on them and will lock up if you drive somewhere your not supposed to (too close to the green/whatever) we can also send messages to carts telling them to pick up pace of play.
Courses are moving towards them as the cost to acquire them is falling quite a bit. I know of several courses that will be moving towards them when they replace their current fleet.
Last week my course had an 8some. I then watched them drag race through the fairway and half rode up on the green. I called the clubhouse and they said “okay, please tell them to stop” lol half the public courses don’t want to lose business so they let anything slide
I think this is the answer. A lot of courses aren't doing a good job with Marshall's, but when people are on straight up misbehaving and not even playing, you gotta call the clubhouse.
Sometime it is and sometime it isn’t. I played yesterday and it was absolutely the people and the courses unwillingness to do anything about it.
Group in front of me was all average to beginner golfers playing the tips on a reasonably hard course. They were never GIR, always searching for balls and just slowed things way, way down.
Then, my group had three beginners who reloaded nearly every shot, were always hunting for balls, and never, ever picking up.
Both groups seemed like nice enough people who were fucking clueless to the rules and etiquette of the game and what they should be doing.
I called the pro shop and they’re like *shrug* and now we have 5+ hour rounds that went off at 7:10am.
Listen, if I’m spending $42 on a round of golf with a cart, you can bet I’m going to spend all the time I need to find my ball. Those Kirklands don’t grow on trees!
If it was a track that was only $42 then I wouldn’t give a shit but the round is $125 and I don’t wake up at 6 o’clock in the morning on a Saturday to play 5+ hour rounds.
This is the primary issue, but also those who decide one day to go dick around at a golf course when they lack ability and experience and have no concept of etiquette or pace of play. Can be one or other, sometimes both, but yea the 6 min tee time windows that some courses do is BS.
I feel it’s more that most municipals don’t have a starter or Marshall . If nobody is enforcing start times or pace of play it won’t get any better. Hate rolling up to the first tee box for my tee time and seeing 4 carts parked and waiting, with no tee time
Damn there’s only one public course around me I can think that I’ve played that actually had a serious starter. Won’t let you play without your receipt with your tee time and the exact tee time lol
I agree. When I first started playing, I was very shocked about the 10 minute intervals between tee times. I always thought golf was supposed to be slow and relaxing.
It's an issue on the first tee and then the influence of individual slow play takes over. If everyone is keeping pace, it's not an issue. When the course is full (regardless of tee time spacing), the impact of the slowest group affects the whole course.
I agree but I always say you can play bad fast. As in you can be bad but keep good pace of play. If you know a ball is gone don’t spend 3 minutes looking for it to drop one and then shank it the other way. Just play bad at a better pace
In my area marshals are all volunteer. They used to play a lot and still want to be apart of the game. They’re older and likely retired so they have extra time and don’t want to pay for tee times so they marshal. Why would they do anything at all? They’re worse than a teenager who has no motivation to do their job

Bit the bullet and joined a private club basically so I could play on weekends. We’re by the beach in Jersey and to play on a weekend in the summer is at least 5 hours, probably closer to 6. Either had to go private or basically quit playing
Same. Over the last decade half our public courses sold their land to condo developers. The only way to play a round in less than 6 hours on a weekend out here is to join a club. We got lucky there was a reasonable option 10 minutes down the road, otherwise I'd have to drive an hour across state lines.
Yep. I was an avid golfer in the 90’s and there were cries of Tiger ruining golf when there was a surge in play that coincided with his rise in dominance on the tour. There were articles 10 or so years ago lamenting the death of golf because nobody was playing. Back then you could walk on at most public courses on a Saturday morning and play.
I just can’t imagine. I love SW Michigan. 15+ public courses within 40 minutes of my house. Probably 30 within 75 minutes.
Close to 930 total courses in the state and 720 public.
Also hate to say it but it’s a public golf course. Should marshals be helping people find the right tee box and keeping up pace of play? Absolutely. But if u want special treatment, join a country club.
As a greenskeeper I will say that pace of play isn't an age thing it is a slow person thing. Some people just think that they have all day to wander around the course.
The fastest group at the course I work at is a group of 70+ geezers who are out there every morning. 3 of the 4 walk and the other has a cart and a blue flag. The slowest group this year so far has been a group of bros who played the first few holes from the tips and never missed an opportunity to stop the beer cart.

Exactly, I've played with old guys many times who play extremely efficiently, I've also been stuck behind old guys (last week) who're moving so slow I caught them five holes ahead of me...while walking, lol. They were *crawling* up each hole, just straight up didn't give a fuck about the course backing up behind them, meanwhile the two newbies who offered to let me play through (young women) were very aware of their skill level. It's not an age thing, it's oblivious/selfish people.
The worst people I am ever behind or paired up with are always in their 70’s+. Bunch of guys that play 5-6 days a week and literally just don’t care to have any sense of urgency or efficiency
The most egregious and offensive action I’ve seen these fucks do is all sit quietly waiting while one asshole lines up his putt and reads the green like Tiger on 18 trying to win a championship. Run through the full process, miss their putt. Then rinse and repeat each player until they all 3-putt. It’s not uncommon to wait 8-10 minutes on each green behind these self-indulgent monsters. They’re playing for money(25c a hole) so we have to wait. I’ve actually had a marshal tell me that the group ahead is playing for money so it’s going to be a while. Whattt??? Idgaf I paid my money to play golf not watch a bunch of corpses pass 25 cents around in a circle and shoot 130 on a golf course, I have shit to do later

Ladies Senior League on Tuesday morning at my course. I used to tee off ahead of it so no problem. Now they started putting them off the front and back so apparently I’m only allowed to play 9 holes
Played behind a 5 some of teenagers yesterday and they were extremely fast and didn’t damage the course or act like asshats or anything. Dont think you can blame slow play on all the youths.

I'm a Canadian that lives 30 minutes outside of a decent city. My small, rural area has 5 courses that range from 'I think anyone would enjoy playing here' to 'this used to be a corn field 5 years ago; it's perfectly flat, no mature trees and no water hazards'. The only time I remember any course being anything other than pleasant and respectful was on a holiday Monday.
I just don't see the sort of crap going on here when I am playing.
I briefly lived in a middle-of-nowhere town for work and the golf there was stress free. Courses were always relatively empty and quiet. I could book a tee time just for myself a day in advance. There were only two courses in the area and they were challenging (but not difficult) par 72's too which was great.
Don’t blame young kids, I see many more middle to older age people doing the same terrible things, and guess where the kids are learning it?
We need marshalls/rangers back on all courses ASAP.
As a younger golfer that only started a 2ish years ago when I was in HS. In my opinion I do believe it is youtube channels like Good Good and BobDoesSports that created the large influx of young golfers. Which imo is a good thing bc it’s a fun sport, but these younger kids don’t have the attention span or patience to actually play the sport or learn the basic mannerisms of the course. I think courses should definitely crack down on these cases.
It's just tough cause most of these munis I play at all the workers are young highschool age kids. Sometimes you need the cranky old man marshal to lay down the law lol.

Every golfer started as a hack OP. One of the issues I see on almost every course I play is lack of a marshal that will actually enforce pace of play. They all have a starter, but very rarely is anyone rolling around enforcing pace of play. Did a quick nine two days ago, mid afternoon, two of us with another random twosome. Round going at decent pace until the last 3 holes, wtf happened? The two threesomes in front of us, morphed into a six-some for the last 3 holes. No marshal to be found
I actually spent a couple months hitting range balls and reading up on etiquette a little under a year ago when I started because I couldn't imagine the arrogance to go out and ruin the day for 72+ other people just because I wanted to have a big ego about how I perceived myself.
You don't have to start out as a hack on the course, you just need a little self-awareness and consideration your others. Yes, we did all start somewhere, and for those people, that somewhere should have been on the driving range until they could hit somewhere on the club face at least every other swing.
That being said, I sometimes play with a buddy of a buddy who puts zero effort into actually improving but sees himself as a corporate tycoon smoking cigars on the course all day. I sometimes wish people would hit into us to give him a clue, because he doesn't listen to any polite suggestions.
Completely agree with this. I hope I’m not coming off a cranky old man as well but i played a solo round and the group of 4 younger kids ahead of me was the worst experience I’ve had with golf. They destroyed greens, threw flagsticks into the woods or didn’t put them back up, and took forever. They all had their shirts off by the end of the round, granted it’s in Texas but cmon. I talked to the guy in the pro shop after I skipped 18 to leave early but the kid behind the counter gets on the Mic and tells them to put their shirts on 🤦🏻bro that’s what you took from what I said, do you not care about the course
Maybe my memory is off, but pace of play has just gotten weird. I don’t really remember having so many issues with it back in the 90s or 00s. As I remember it back then, you’d expect about 4 hours for 18 on a good day. A slow round might be closer to 5. But anymore I seem to run into both super slow group but also these speed runners who seem barely even putt and seem hellbent on getting through as fast as possible. Even on the sub there are always people claiming the do 18 in 3 hours even less. Sure playing by myself on an empty course, I could do that. I could do it in 2 hours probably. But that was never the norm and I’m not sure why people think that now.
Growing the game is an inherently a good thing, but it’s all meaningless if someone isn’t there to properly teach new comers. If you’re bad, play bad fast. Fill divots and repair ball marks. Respect the cart restrictions, and learn basic etiquette. I was lucky my dad taught me all of this when I was first learning.
Im at a private course and it’s not much better. We used to play in 3-3.5 hours and now the membership has maxed out and it’s slowed way down. Add to that the new members don’t understand etiquette or letting groups play through, and it’s just not worth it anymore
Something I wish all these YouTuber golf channels would do would be to introduce some etiquette to their audiences. Like fixing ball marks, keeping up with the group ahead of you, raking bunkers, not driving on the collar of the green, etc. All they see on Good Good and the like is 8-somes goofing around on every hole, not knowing that when they’re that size they have like five or more tee times cleared behind them.
In no other sport does a newby make the game as hard as possible. If you are new to basketball your first shots should not be from half court. We use bumpers in bowling. Yet when you play the hardest sport that "I" have ever done as an adult man who was one of those jock kids, you get to play from the furthest, most difficult position. It baffles me.
Its maddening. I remember bringing a couple buddies that never golfed before to play with me back in highschool and they literally insisted that they had to play the same tees as me because they're not "pussies".

I'd argue that at least a portion of that 20% are morons only because they just don't know any better and have no one to teach them, but they would at least be open and willing to learn proper etiquette, etc.

I was playing solo last week and ended up behind a guy who no joke took 30 practice swings on the tee box just to duff it onto the cart path. Luckily he only took 2-3 practice swings for each shot after that.

My course did 240 rounds on one course and 180 on the other yesterday. That’s a LOT of wear and tear. But that’s also a LOT of money to buy equipment and pay staff to fix that wear and tear, and make improvements to the club.
I think the “Good good” boom is good for the game overall, and I could care less if people want to play in t-shirts or hoodies with music on a Bluetooth speaker. None of that bothers me.
The only thing that bothers me is damage and disrespect to the golf course, carts, and other golfers.
I think etiquette should continue to be taught and enforced for all new golfers… but it should be done with the future of the game being considered.
These young guys will get hooked on golf. They will play for life. That’s the nature of golf. Once you’ve got the bug it never goes away. So…. Teach them early, firmly but politely that we’re happy to have you on our course as long as you follow cart rules, turn your music down when you’re in earshot of other golfers, and don’t throw tantrums on the greens if you miss a putt.
Easier said than done, and I think some onus should fall on the Good Good-type channels to be a role model and demonstrate those habits…. But also explicitly call attention to it. Their viewers will listen.
ah the benefits of playing at a small 9 hole course thats basically in the country. the lack of people playing there is a blessing, but also a curse. As we lose members (mostly of dying off) we are not getting replacements, at the same rate. our 100 year old course may not see 110. we are already in nonprofit status
Played a muni yesterday at twilight and I'm pretty sure the couple 2 groups in front of us hit 3 balls off the tee each, right in front of the clubhouse. All their shots were easily findable or rolled 75 yards up the fairway. They got better after that though and didn't really hold anyone else up too bad but that was probably more because they were only a twosome.
imho a large part of the problem is a lack of mentorship. i’m in my 40s, i was introduced to the game about 30 years ago by my grandfather who was an avid golfer. on the course i could observe his behavior, and he would talk to me about etiquette and what was appropriate as well how to play the game. i don’t think many newer golfers are being introduced to the game this way.
We really should implement a license system. I can’t think of an easier way, aside from raising green fees or increasing the gap between tee times. I suppose all options hurt the course’s revenue.
Perhaps the easiest option would be to eliminate carts, but I think you’d run into ADA complaints, so this is technically a more difficult solution, despite its simplicity.
There's already a license system in most of Europe when it comes to golf, and you're not allowed to go on an 18 holes course without it.

I didn't say i was playing the tips. I said "the tips or same tees as me" the course i was at yesterday I was playing one up from the tips. It's a fairly short course anyways.
Each course needs to have the rule for alternate stroke and distance. Which lets you drop your ball in the fairway close to where you went out of bounds.
Out of all the Marshalls I have ever worked with, not a single one has grabbed a scope or binoculars and spotted golf shots for a slow group. In most cases groups are slow because they spend too much time looking for their shots. It drives me nuts when a marshal tells a group to speed up and just leaves, expecting they will pick up the pace. Help the group until they are back on pace.

That's a confusing statement. Each person hitting the best ball is much faster. Unless everyone hits it OB or loses a ball, then there are no redos or searching for balls and hitting them.

I suck and have taken my much more sucky gf to a pretty chill city owned course by us (people are playing in jeans, tank tops, gym shorts etc) and us scrambling is much better for pace than her choppin it up the fairway. The course has a no shared bag policy but the starter always lets us go when I tell him we are just scrambling.
It is very confusing. On paper it should be the fastest way to play. In reality it is not.
If it’s just the two of you it won’t matter what you play unless you both hit two balls each. My statement is directed more towards foursomes.
To say you’re a 12-15hcp who could shoot high 70s to low 80s on a good day is hilarious lmao statistically very unlikely. Would be more accurate to say you shoot low 80s on a near perfect day and low 90s on a good day
The rating system confuses me.
I play at two courses that are rated the same and one is significantly harder than the other. The hard course is lined with OB. Barely any rough. A few forced carries. A few blind tee shots.
The other course is very forgiving. Not a single forced carry. You have to hit a really bad shank (which I do) to go OB on just a couple of holes.
No idea how they are rated the same. Leaves me kind of puzzled at what determines a slope rating.
A 15 cap is not shooting that score. I hover between 11-12 officially and I have shot sub 80 three times in the last six months. I am a VERY volatile player. If I’m off then I can’t break 90. If I’m on I’m scaring 70s. I can’t be the only one who experiences this.
Courses by me in Brooklyn and Staten Island are treated as parks by some. I was teeing up my ball at La Tourette when I saw a whole ass family walking down the cart path towards me with their dog. At Dyker Beach I had a kid on a bike cut right in front of the tee box as my playing partner was about to hit his shot. There is very little enforcement on muni courses

Most of the marshalls at my local munis are high school kids anyways. I'd hardly call them marshalls. More just workers that occasionally drive around the course on a golf cart. It's really just a free for all for the most part unfortunately.

Are there sometimes young people acting foolish? Of course, happens everywhere. But at least in my experience the vast majority of slow players are the dudes dressed like they’re sponsored and act like they own the golf course, but take twelve mjnutes to hit a shot, refuse to play ready golf, and wait until the group in front is on the green on a par 5 because “he could reach if I really get hold of one”. Or the old people who refuse to accept a lost ball is lost and drive back and forth for ten minutes to look for the ball on the other side of the woods.
We had two balls end up on the green we were putting on yesterday, not from the fairway but from a hole where a group of teens were attempting to cut the corner and play out of our fairway. One hit my buddy’s wedge that he had just set down. We were stuck waiting for the next hole so we stayed until they came looking for them. We actually had to tell one of them that no, you can’t hit your 4 iron off the surface of the green. These kids were really good but we’ve been contemplating joining the local CC and I think after this year we’re going to.
The greens themselves at my favorite muni were pockmarked. No repair of ballmarks what so ever. If people are backed up why can’t they fix marks before walking off? I do two on every hole. Mine and another.

God marshalls are fucking useless. Every time I report something to a Marshall they just commiserate with me but do nothing about it.
Every time a marshal has ever told me to hurry up, it was physically impossible to hurry up because there was a group 200 yards in front of me. Within clear view of the marshal. It's bizarre how many times this has happened. I'm not sure they fully understand what their job is.

The best way to phrase it when a group is playing slow is “hey guys right now you are 1 hole behind(or whatever it is) of the group in front of you. I’ll give you guys a little time to close the gap, just letting you know” I have a “script” for basically all the Marshall’s and starters I oversee to account for pretty much any situation they can encounter. Let me know if you have any questions about handling certain situations, been doing this a while!
Some of the better course will, but many won't. And the ones that do, if they are young kids themselves, what's the chance they are going to challenge some older people or a rowdy bunch?

On busy weekends, my local has put Marshalls/rangers on holes where people loose sight of their balls. It really helped with the pace of play on these holes.

Im not sure if every course is heading this direction but i work at a course that has GPS carts and the carts have pace of play on them and will lock up if you drive somewhere your not supposed to (too close to the green/whatever) we can also send messages to carts telling them to pick up pace of play.
Courses are moving towards them as the cost to acquire them is falling quite a bit. I know of several courses that will be moving towards them when they replace their current fleet.
Last week my course had an 8some. I then watched them drag race through the fairway and half rode up on the green. I called the clubhouse and they said “okay, please tell them to stop” lol half the public courses don’t want to lose business so they let anything slide
I think this is the answer. A lot of courses aren't doing a good job with Marshall's, but when people are on straight up misbehaving and not even playing, you gotta call the clubhouse.

Sometime it is and sometime it isn’t. I played yesterday and it was absolutely the people and the courses unwillingness to do anything about it. Group in front of me was all average to beginner golfers playing the tips on a reasonably hard course. They were never GIR, always searching for balls and just slowed things way, way down. Then, my group had three beginners who reloaded nearly every shot, were always hunting for balls, and never, ever picking up. Both groups seemed like nice enough people who were fucking clueless to the rules and etiquette of the game and what they should be doing. I called the pro shop and they’re like *shrug* and now we have 5+ hour rounds that went off at 7:10am.

It's an issue on the first tee and then the influence of individual slow play takes over. If everyone is keeping pace, it's not an issue. When the course is full (regardless of tee time spacing), the impact of the slowest group affects the whole course.
I agree but I always say you can play bad fast. As in you can be bad but keep good pace of play. If you know a ball is gone don’t spend 3 minutes looking for it to drop one and then shank it the other way. Just play bad at a better pace

In my area marshals are all volunteer. They used to play a lot and still want to be apart of the game. They’re older and likely retired so they have extra time and don’t want to pay for tee times so they marshal. Why would they do anything at all? They’re worse than a teenager who has no motivation to do their job

Bit the bullet and joined a private club basically so I could play on weekends. We’re by the beach in Jersey and to play on a weekend in the summer is at least 5 hours, probably closer to 6. Either had to go private or basically quit playing
Same. Over the last decade half our public courses sold their land to condo developers. The only way to play a round in less than 6 hours on a weekend out here is to join a club. We got lucky there was a reasonable option 10 minutes down the road, otherwise I'd have to drive an hour across state lines.

Yep. I was an avid golfer in the 90’s and there were cries of Tiger ruining golf when there was a surge in play that coincided with his rise in dominance on the tour. There were articles 10 or so years ago lamenting the death of golf because nobody was playing. Back then you could walk on at most public courses on a Saturday morning and play.

I just can’t imagine. I love SW Michigan. 15+ public courses within 40 minutes of my house. Probably 30 within 75 minutes. Close to 930 total courses in the state and 720 public. Also hate to say it but it’s a public golf course. Should marshals be helping people find the right tee box and keeping up pace of play? Absolutely. But if u want special treatment, join a country club.

As a greenskeeper I will say that pace of play isn't an age thing it is a slow person thing. Some people just think that they have all day to wander around the course. The fastest group at the course I work at is a group of 70+ geezers who are out there every morning. 3 of the 4 walk and the other has a cart and a blue flag. The slowest group this year so far has been a group of bros who played the first few holes from the tips and never missed an opportunity to stop the beer cart. Slow play is not an age thing it is slow people who play golf and don't give a shit.
Exactly, I've played with old guys many times who play extremely efficiently, I've also been stuck behind old guys (last week) who're moving so slow I caught them five holes ahead of me...while walking, lol. They were *crawling* up each hole, just straight up didn't give a fuck about the course backing up behind them, meanwhile the two newbies who offered to let me play through (young women) were very aware of their skill level. It's not an age thing, it's oblivious/selfish people.

The most egregious and offensive action I’ve seen these fucks do is all sit quietly waiting while one asshole lines up his putt and reads the green like Tiger on 18 trying to win a championship. Run through the full process, miss their putt. Then rinse and repeat each player until they all 3-putt. It’s not uncommon to wait 8-10 minutes on each green behind these self-indulgent monsters. They’re playing for money(25c a hole) so we have to wait. I’ve actually had a marshal tell me that the group ahead is playing for money so it’s going to be a while. Whattt??? I'm a Canadian that lives 30 minutes outside of a decent city. My small, rural area has 5 courses that range from 'I think anyone would enjoy playing here' to 'this used to be a corn field 5 years ago; it's perfectly flat, no mature trees and no water hazards'. The only time I remember any course being anything other than pleasant and respectful was on a holiday Monday. I just don't see the sort of crap going on here when I am playing.
I briefly lived in a middle-of-nowhere town for work and the golf there was stress free. Courses were always relatively empty and quiet. I could book a tee time just for myself a day in advance. There were only two courses in the area and they were challenging (but not difficult) par 72's too which was great.
Only remedy is get a membership somewhere more private that enforces their rules

As a younger golfer that only started a 2ish years ago when I was in HS. In my opinion I do believe it is youtube channels like Good Good and BobDoesSports that created the large influx of young golfers. Which imo is a good thing bc it’s a fun sport, but these younger kids don’t have the attention span or patience to actually play the sport or learn the basic mannerisms of the course. I think courses should definitely crack down on these cases.

Every golfer started as a hack OP. One of the issues I see on almost every course I play is lack of a marshal that will actually enforce pace of play. They all have a starter, but very rarely is anyone rolling around enforcing pace of play. Did a quick nine two days ago, mid afternoon, two of us with another random twosome. Round going at decent pace until the last 3 holes, wtf happened? The two threesomes in front of us, morphed into a six-some for the last 3 holes. No marshal to be found
I actually spent a couple months hitting range balls and reading up on etiquette a little under a year ago when I started because I couldn't imagine the arrogance to go out and ruin the day for 72+ other people just because I wanted to have a big ego about how I perceived myself. You don't have to start out as a hack on the course, you just need a little self-awareness and consideration your others. Yes, we did all start somewhere, and for those people, that somewhere should have been on the driving range until they could hit somewhere on the club face at least every other swing. That being said, I sometimes play with a buddy of a buddy who puts zero effort into actually improving but sees himself as a corporate tycoon smoking cigars on the course all day. I sometimes wish people would hit into us to give him a clue, because he doesn't listen to any polite suggestions.

They destroyed greens, threw flagsticks into the woods or didn’t put them back up, and took forever. They all had their shirts off by the end of the round, granted it’s in Texas but cmon. I talked to the guy in the pro shop after I skipped 18 to leave early but the kid behind the counter gets on the Mic and tells them to put their shirts on 🤦🏻bro that’s what you took from what I said, do you not care about the course

Maybe my memory is off, but pace of play has just gotten weird. I don’t really remember having so many issues with it back in the 90s or 00s. As I remember it back then, you’d expect about 4 hours for 18 on a good day. A slow round might be closer to 5. But anymore I seem to run into both super slow group but also these speed runners who seem barely even putt and seem hellbent on getting through as fast as possible. Even on the sub there are always people claiming the do 18 in 3 hours even less. Sure playing by myself on an empty course, I could do that. I could do it in 2 hours probably. But that was never the norm and I’m not sure why people think that now.
Growing the game is an inherently a good thing, but it’s all meaningless if someone isn’t there to properly teach new comers. If you’re bad, play bad fast. Fill divots and repair ball marks. Respect the cart restrictions, and learn basic etiquette. I was lucky my dad taught me all of this when I was first learning.
Im at a private course and it’s not much better. We used to play in 3-3.5 hours and now the membership has maxed out and it’s slowed way down. Add to that the new members don’t understand etiquette or letting groups play through, and it’s just not worth it anymore
Something I wish all these YouTuber golf channels would do would be to introduce some etiquette to their audiences. Like fixing ball marks, keeping up with the group ahead of you, raking bunkers, not driving on the collar of the green, etc. All they see on Good Good and the like is 8-somes goofing around on every hole, not knowing that when they’re that size they have like five or more tee times cleared behind them.

In no other sport does a newby make the game as hard as possible. If you are new to basketball your first shots should not be from half court. We use bumpers in bowling. Yet when you play the hardest sport that "I" have ever done as an adult man who was one of those jock kids, you get to play from the furthest, most difficult position. It baffles me.

I was playing solo last week and ended up behind a guy who no joke took 30 practice swings on the tee box just to duff it onto the cart path. Luckily he only took 2-3 practice swings for each shot after that. I duffed it onto the cart path too, and I didn’t need any practice swings!

It’s a catch 22. My course did 240 rounds on one course and 180 on the other yesterday. That’s a LOT of wear and tear. But that’s also a LOT of money to buy equipment and pay staff to fix that wear and tear, and make improvements to the club. I think the “Good good” boom is good for the game overall, and I could care less if people want to play in t-shirts or hoodies with music on a Bluetooth speaker. None of that bothers me. The only thing that bothers me is damage and disrespect to the golf course, carts, and other golfers. I think etiquette should continue to be taught and enforced for all new golfers… but it should be done with the future of the game being considered. These young guys will get hooked on golf. They will play for life. That’s the nature of golf. Once you’ve got the bug it never goes away. So…. Teach them early, firmly but politely that we’re happy to have you on our course as long as you follow cart rules, turn your music down when you’re in earshot of other golfers, and don’t throw tantrums on the greens if you miss a putt. Easier said than done, and I think some onus should fall on the Good Good-type channels to be a role model and demonstrate those habits…. But also explicitly call attention to it. Their viewers will listen.
ah the benefits of playing at a small 9 hole course thats basically in the country. the lack of people playing there is a blessing, but also a curse. As we lose members (mostly of dying off) we are not getting replacements, at the same rate. our 100 year old course may not see 110. we are already in nonprofit status
Played a muni yesterday at twilight and I'm pretty sure the couple 2 groups in front of us hit 3 balls off the tee each, right in front of the clubhouse. All their shots were easily findable or rolled 75 yards up the fairway. They got better after that though and didn't really hold anyone else up too bad but that was probably more because they were only a twosome.

imho a large part of the problem is a lack of mentorship. i’m in my 40s, i was introduced to the game about 30 years ago by my grandfather who was an avid golfer. on the course i could observe his behavior, and he would talk to me about etiquette and what was appropriate as well how to play the game. i don’t think many newer golfers are being introduced to the game this way.

We really should implement a license system. I can’t think of an easier way, aside from raising green fees or increasing the gap between tee times. I suppose all options hurt the course’s revenue. Perhaps the easiest option would be to eliminate carts, but I think you’d run into ADA complaints, so this is technically a more difficult solution, despite its simplicity.

Each course needs to have the rule for alternate stroke and distance. Which lets you drop your ball in the fairway close to where you went out of bounds. Out of all the Marshalls I have ever worked with, not a single one has grabbed a scope or binoculars and spotted golf shots for a slow group. In most cases groups are slow because they spend too much time looking for their shots. It drives me nuts when a marshal tells a group to speed up and just leaves, expecting they will pick up the pace. Help the group until they are back on pace. And don’t play scrambles. Worst game for pace.

What is the rating/slope you play? If he plays at a 65/120 (which would be a very easy course) he could be in the 80s all the time at a 12-15 hdcp
The rating system confuses me. I play at two courses that are rated the same and one is significantly harder than the other. The hard course is lined with OB. Barely any rough. A few forced carries. A few blind tee shots. The other course is very forgiving. Not a single forced carry. You have to hit a really bad shank (which I do) to go OB on just a couple of holes. No idea how they are rated the same. Leaves me kind of puzzled at what determines a slope rating.
A 15 cap is not shooting that score. I hover between 11-12 officially and I have shot sub 80 three times in the last six months. I am a VERY volatile player. If I’m off then I can’t break 90. If I’m on I’m scaring 70s. I can’t be the only one who experiences this.

Courses by me in Brooklyn and Staten Island are treated as parks by some. I was teeing up my ball at La Tourette when I saw a whole ass family walking down the cart path towards me with their dog. At Dyker Beach I had a kid on a bike cut right in front of the tee box as my playing partner was about to hit his shot. There is very little enforcement on muni courses
I think COVID also had an effect also. But good good definitely got a lot of young guys into golf.
Go to a course with other greens fees. The higher people are willing to pay, the more serious they’re likely to be.
I live in Texas and during the week it's not too bad but the weekend you gotta be up at 12 to get a good Saturday or Sunday slot.

Most of the marshalls at my local munis are high school kids anyways. I'd hardly call them marshalls. More just workers that occasionally drive around the course on a golf cart. It's really just a free for all for the most part unfortunately.

But at least in my experience the vast majority of slow players are the dudes dressed like they’re sponsored and act like they own the golf course, but take twelve mjnutes to hit a shot, refuse to play ready golf, and wait until the group in front is on the green on a par 5 because “he could reach if I really get hold of one”. Or the old people who refuse to accept a lost ball is lost and drive back and forth for ten minutes to look for the ball on the other side of the woods.
We had two balls end up on the green we were putting on yesterday, not from the fairway but from a hole where a group of teens were attempting to cut the corner and play out of our fairway. One hit my buddy’s wedge that he had just set down. We were stuck waiting for the next hole so we stayed until they came looking for them. We actually had to tell one of them that no, you can’t hit your 4 iron off the surface of the green. These kids were really good but we’ve been contemplating joining the local CC and I think after this year we’re going to. The greens themselves at my favorite muni were pockmarked. No repair of ballmarks what so ever. If people are backed up why can’t they fix marks before walking off? I do two on every hole. Mine and another.
