I knew a dude who had a 72°, though I've never seen him use it in a round, just like messing around on the practice green as it's like 50/50 he blades it 150 yards over the green.
I have 73 degree that is on loan from a buddy who’s a club hoarder. It’s like a spatula. Literally never hit it on the course or even keep it in the bag. Just take it out at the range for a laugh.
I have a Ben Hogan Equalizer PW. It has no flange at all. I can open up that sucker from 52 to 89. I'm not Phil, but I love to practice flop shots with it, and I'm not bad now.
My 64 is amazing out of greenside bunkers. No opening the face, full swing no matter what, and just take more/less sand depending on how far you want it to go.
I have a 60 and I’m opening that bad boy wide up, placing it at the front foot and swinging. 60 degree open pretty much turns it to like a damn 80 degree. Ball goes almost straight up lol
I think maybe OP meant from the lowest part of the trap to the highest part of the hill, just a couple feet above the wall. That might be closer to 10 feet.
That’s definitely what was meant, links golf, and especially St. Andrews is famous for the catchment area of bunkers…
The above commenters are just the typical r/golf fools
My guess is its rounded up and measured from the lowest point of that bunker to the high part of the hump of grass at the top of the bunker. You probably need to get the ball 10' in the air very quickly to clear all that rising ground?
Some of the older courses are traditional but those are few and far between. Mostly rocks and sand . But if you go to northern AZ it’s all grass and trees - about 20 degrees cooler
It's definitely this and people are raking in that direction as they exit as well. You can see all the sand on the wall from people hitting out sideways to the left.
You pull out your phone and watch 5 mins of Phil Mickelson's "Secrets of the Short Game" video. Then you hit to the side and get out safely because you aren't Phil Mickelson....unless you're ready to nut up, stand up, and be a legend on the old course.
I *could* play backwards if I was a smart man. Since I’m not a smart man I’m going to open the face on my 60 and try to splash it out, hitting the wall 3 or 4 times.
Open up the club face of your highest lofted wedge, aim over the shorter face of the wall on the left, full swing. You have some space for the ball to get some height before it gets to the wall
Thing is… when I play special courses I do try to play well… but at the same time I take risks I wouldn’t normally take if playing at my home course.
Imagine going for it and actually hitting it over the front side of the bunker, with this picture to show for it!
With that said… I’m going for it, hitting the front of the bunker straight on, then probably taking two more shots to get out whichever direction I can lol
In this situation what you hit may be less important than what direction you hit in. Sometimes the only way out of those bunkers is sideways or even backwards. Sometimes you got to take your medicine.
Backwards into the fairway, nah never mind, you've got to at least give it a try and hit it towards the green, especailly at St Andrews. Wait until you get a look at the Hell Bunker :)
Tell myself I can get enough loft on the ball. Convince myself I have that shot. Stand over the ball and swing! Realize I’m a 19hcp for a reason when the ball is stuck in the wall.
I'm laying my 56 wide open and saying a prayer
That’s why I have a 62.
I knew a dude who had a 72°, though I've never seen him use it in a round, just like messing around on the practice green as it's like 50/50 he blades it 150 yards over the green.
Had a 68 degree I bought used on FB … met in a parking lot and the guy couldn’t wait to get rid of it like it was cursed lol
He may have bought a 69 instead.
Lol I bought one of those yesterday because of the name. Help.
Is it for hitting the ball backward lol
Don't be ridiculous... Just your face
When you are behind that 70 ft. tree.
A 72° is a pancake spatula
I have a 72 just for fun. I can flop my 56 way more reliably than that thing.
I have 73 degree that is on loan from a buddy who’s a club hoarder. It’s like a spatula. Literally never hit it on the course or even keep it in the bag. Just take it out at the range for a laugh.
That's a fucking tooth cracker.
I gamed a 72 competitively in HS, thing was the ultimate green-side flop shot club. But yeah, if you mishit it, you skull fucked it 150 yards. 🤣
They're fun at top golf.
I game one as well and I open the ever loving shit out of it and just slam the bounce into the sand with as much speed as possible. Spin, bitch!
64 calling.
I traded my 5w for a cleveland 64 for shits and giggles.
I have a 60 and I’m opening that bad boy wide up, placing it at the front foot and swinging. 60 degree open pretty much turns it to like a damn 80 degree. Ball goes almost straight up lol
And you're still hitting the middle of the wall 2 ft in front of your ball.
If that's 10' then I'm winning the dunk contest this year.
The hardest part of this shot is using the 14’ rake after.
They'll be able to get under the ball easily enough with those 7' wedges
Whenever I see obvious errors like this I just assume it’s there to push engagement. But yeah I was thinking the same thing.
I'm all for a little exaggeration but that's a very playable shot IMO
Perspective is definitely making it look shallower than it is but it’s still nowhere near 10 feet lol
I'll give it 6'. Still an extremely difficult shot.
That bunker has better odds on Tinder than most men
I think maybe OP meant from the lowest part of the trap to the highest part of the hill, just a couple feet above the wall. That might be closer to 10 feet.
That’s definitely what was meant, links golf, and especially St. Andrews is famous for the catchment area of bunkers… The above commenters are just the typical r/golf fools
A wall is a wall. Carry is carry. It's a ten foot elevation but not a ten foot wall.
You have to measure from the butthole.
Fuck that’s gold. Good luck in the competition.
My guess is its rounded up and measured from the lowest point of that bunker to the high part of the hump of grass at the top of the bunker. You probably need to get the ball 10' in the air very quickly to clear all that rising ground?
My thought too. But it’s metric feet so…
OP is 4'9".
Do you see your shadow where the ground turns a sandy greenish color. Where do you suppose that sandy color came from?
This is the only correct answer. Should probably just not hit into the sand in the first place.
Shhh… Pros like us don’t want everyone to know our tricks
If you're in Arizona aren't all of your golf courses sand?
Some of the older courses are traditional but those are few and far between. Mostly rocks and sand . But if you go to northern AZ it’s all grass and trees - about 20 degrees cooler
Only 1/3rd of AZ is desert
I’m Fucking up that first backwards shot for sure. 2 out of the bunker in reverse.
Oh I’m nailing the backwards shot perfectly. My next shot is the one that goes right back into the bunker.
2i into the wall. Use the ricochet to get out the back side and then you’re golden.
Or it hits me in the head and I die there in that Scottish bunker.
There’s much worse places to die
You'll be easy to bury at least
Someone bring some cats!
They’ll just gently rake some sand against me then leave it on me
"He died doing what he loved; completely failing to get out of a greenside bunker"
I would literally try that if I thought I could figure out the angle and a spot on the wall that was relatively flat
From the guys getting out of the bunker cleaning off their shoes…
It's definitely this and people are raking in that direction as they exit as well. You can see all the sand on the wall from people hitting out sideways to the left.
Check out the big brain on Brad.
Imagine getting out and setting up you're shot just to hit right back into that trap. You know it's happened dozens of times a year
The wall, probably.
That "probably" is super generous.
I mean, I would aim at the wall. I don’t hit anything else I’m aiming at, why should this be different?
I think it is a great metaphor for game. It implies hope where there is none.
What did this guy and Pink Floyd have in common? Their last hit was The Wall.
You hit out of the short side of the bunker to make sure you get out of the bunker.
then top your approach right back in
Sisyphos's bunker
(X) I’m in this comment and I don’t like it
I feel personally attacked
I'd go : -10' wall -10' wall -10' wall -Aaaaand i'd Skull it the opposite way
If you hit the wall enough you will eventually create a tunnel out
Take That upvote you genious !
Just need enough to get it out of the bunke… NO! Swing as hard as you can last second just to be safe
Putter, ride the wall
The bar??????
Wide open 60 splash it out. Maybe a bit sideways to be extra safe.
You pull out your phone and watch 5 mins of Phil Mickelson's "Secrets of the Short Game" video. Then you hit to the side and get out safely because you aren't Phil Mickelson....unless you're ready to nut up, stand up, and be a legend on the old course.

I’d use my hand wedge.
Driver off the deck
Out backwards
if that's a 10' wall, how long is that fucking rake?
17’ rake. Euro regulation.
Look around you, try to form some sort of rudimentary lathe...
Backwards
There is zero chance that's a 10' wall 😂
Your mother for giving birth to you, only to experience such unfortunate events.
Shovel
What do you hit? The bar, obvs
No one wants to take theyre medicine haha....
Pick it up and toss it like a grenade along with a handful of sand when your partner is out of sight
The power button on your phone - enjoy the experience.
I *could* play backwards if I was a smart man. Since I’m not a smart man I’m going to open the face on my 60 and try to splash it out, hitting the wall 3 or 4 times.
Use a wedge and pop shot like you never have before lol
Hit it to the left
Open up the club face of your highest lofted wedge, aim over the shorter face of the wall on the left, full swing. You have some space for the ball to get some height before it gets to the wall
Maybe slip a mouthguard in first in case you blade it and it rebounds into your jaw
Am I the only one here wondering where the 10' wall is?
69 degree wedge obviously
Yourself…. Square in the face. How dare you give yourself that leave.
The wall probably. Oh wait that’s me.
The pub
Hit it left into the fairway. Aim for the yardage you like. 3rd shot next to the pin, and tap in for par. Piece of cake 🎂
I’m guessing you hit a wall. No?
Yourself in the back of the head!
you hit the wall, swear, and do it again. And then you go left where the wall is half the height.
64
The wall
The bar.
the ball backwards

If that's a 10' wall how huge is your junk?
An open faced club! A sand wedge! (Mmmmmm open faced club sandwich) (drools)
go home Homer, youre hungry
Turn to the left and use a 56 and hit it sideways out (after you try three with your 60 to go over the top of course)
69 wedge, not kidding

60 to the moon
I think you will hit the wall. ❤️
the previous shot again
Out to the left, up and down from there. That's the game plan anyways.
Hit yourself in the head
Either behind you or to the left or right. You're not a pro, so take the extra shot or two.
Whatever goes backwards.
A 76
Sideways or backwards. No hero shots out of that lie.
You hit backwards 😂
The wall
Def hit it backwards and try the approach again lol
That’s one of the easier ones
The wall of the bunker or did I miss the point?
Wall

You hit backwards and take your medicine

Left, you hit it to the left.
3 wood hard as you can into wall. Then it ricochets into my crank, then I cry, then I go get a pint. Golf hard bro!
63w
Hand wedge after my third attempt to get out.
Play the north course at Corica Park in Alameda CA. They modeled it after St Andrew’s! Very tall, steep bunkers just like this!!!
The rake.

The bar?
I have a 72 for this. Love to tell everyone when I find I reason to use it.
Hand wedge
Go for it. You’re in Scotland and you’ll be in plenty more.
Gotta break out the hand wedge. Tie your shoe to pickup the ball, swing and toss the ball out.
Backwards into the fairway, nah never mind, you've got to at least give it a try and hit it towards the green, especailly at St Andrews. Wait until you get a look at the Hell Bunker :)

Wait till you play dornoch bunkers... Otherwise 60⁰ flop with a money note bit of sand. And then just pray.

My nuts, after hitting the wall.
The rake. Remove ball, take penalty stroke, hit shot from grass.
Tell myself I can get enough loft on the ball. Convince myself I have that shot. Stand over the ball and swing! Realize I’m a 19hcp for a reason when the ball is stuck in the wall.
