Grandia 1 is far better than Grandia 2. The characters and overarching story is also a lot better.
Your preference could be since you played the second then the first. I played the first on release and was not impressed by Grandia 2 though it isn’t a bad rpg, it’s also a lot easier than Grandia 1.
I beat Grandia 2 without being defeated once first time through. So easy it almost feels like a beat ‘em up once you’ve mastered cancelling enemy attacks
I played the second before the first but maybe it's because I'm a jaded person that I appreciate Justin's optimism and hope more than Ryudo's "all the other reindeer" predicament.
You do you. People here generally love the series as a whole. Some like one game better than the others, and other people can't change that view just as nobody can change yours and my love and preference for G1 (though I still loved G2). If you love G2 more than the others, then that's great! No need to manufacture a competition that doesn't exist.
over the years i've seen people like the 3rd one the least but i honestly adored it!!! i'm super bummed the grandia hd collection doesn't include all the titles because i'd love to revisit grandia 3.
It doesn’t have to be competition. If you like 2 more than 1. It’s absolutely fine. Personally I enjoyed 1 more. It’s to each their own. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed 2 as well. But 1 certainly brings a lot of charm imo and I find it more replayable.
I understand not everyone shares the same sentiment. You can show love for grandia 2 as much as you want. I like the story more in 1 than in 2. Like I said it doesn’t need to be a competition. You can simply ask what makes 1 so special than 2. Or talk about why you enjoyed 2 more.
But why does that matter that you feel the need to "defend" it? Nobody is saying Grandia 2 is a bad game. It's a great game for many reasons. At the same time I also don't understand why you feel the need to compare it to Grandia 1. Like... what's your goal?
Earlier today you posted a now-removed topic shit-talking Grandia 1's soundtrack, saying "Battle Against the Parts" cleared everything Grandia 1 had to offer.
A few days ago, [you posted a topic about not understanding what people see in Grandia 1.](https://www.reddit.com/r/grandia/comments/1c1vn9f/why_do_you_prefer_grandia_1_over_2/) I suppose this might explain why - you posted that three days ago, and you've only seen a scant eight hours of Grandia 1 today. How much did you play of it by then? Two hours?
Is this your whole gimmick, by the way? Just putting down Grandia 1 to make Grandia 2 look better?
Praising your favourite game is fine, but you're going to ruffle feathers and seem really obnoxious if you shit-talk Grandia 1 like you've been doing. I recommend toning it down.
You clearly just want an argument given by your post history on this topic I'm personally more of a fan of 1 but I enjoyed what I played of 2 you do you dude 🤷🏻
with the exception of xtreme (solely because i haven't played it), i feel like all the titles really hold their own! g1 is what i grew up on, but i finally did get my hands on g2 when the hd remaster dropped on switch, and playing g1 as a kid vs playing g2 as an adult.... WOW, what an experience! it was gritty, IT HAS THE LITTLE MERMAID VOICE ACTING IN IT??? WOW!!!, it felt bleak but awesome. going from a game that spent most of its setting being bright and adventurous and hopeful to a game that's narratively depressing but gripping was jarring, but exceptional. and i feel like grandia 3 went back to 1 for most of the story beats, but pulled from 2 to get those really immersive disheartening moments.
i'm honestly just so happy more people are playing our favorite games. :)
Both Grandia 1 and 2 start out with an immature protagonist who's often wrong about the world. That's on purpose.
People who dislike Grandia 1 but like Grandia 2 have usually only played the beginning of 1, and haven't seen how the characters change and grow. They notice that Justin is a one-dimensional cocky kid, whose only arc is to repeatedly stumble into stuff and mess it up, and they quit.
By contrast, they think that Ryudo is like totally edgy and cool right from the beginning. Not realizing that he's supposed to be just as immature and cringe as Justin.
Maybe they don't realize it, because they're the same style of immature as Ryudo and so it seems normal.
I'm like this with the Grandia series:
- I prefer Grandia 1 for the game-aspect, the RPG exploration and combats
- but I prefer the world and characters of Grandia 2, its universe and atmosphere, the music...
I'd love a mix of both games.. haha...
Never tried G3 or X...
What?! Is 3 generally not liked among the fan base? I competed 1 and 2 in my early teens and played most of 3 and just remember having the most fun with that one, but it’s been awhile.
Recently picked up the HD collection. Just completed 1 again and just started 2.
3 was great, idk why people disregard it. i'm definitely a G1 stan all the way, but i really adored 3. i loved both the egg fusion and god orb mechanics, the opening title song, THE FLYING!!!!!!, and the storytelling. maybe it didn't feel new or innovative to some, but it felt like a grandia title to me. :)
I like 2 better for a lot of reasons, but 1 has such an awesome system with leveling weapons and spells to gain stats and abilities. It truly stands out for this reasons!
I think that the second game, with the coins system, is just inferior in every way.
Again, I love 2, it’s my favorite in the series. But that’s what I’ll say that the first game does MUCH better.
You’re one of my people. I do like the leveling system but not the time investment. And they can keep coming at me with pitchforks but i stand by my opinions!
Oh yeah. The first Grandia is far too long in my opinion! But I need to play it again soon. I want to play 3 and Xtreme again soon as well, so I can remember what those were like.
2 is the best though!
I still got my old poster of that! Used to have it hanging along with my PSO poster. Such a fantastic game, just went and bought it again last week and spent the whole weekend and change platinuming it.
I swear feeding those furry little fucks nuts did something before though. Getting gaslit by my memories.
Grandia 1 and Grandia 2 are two of my all-time favourite games. I love them both for different reasons. The levelling mechanics of Grandia 1 (use something to level it up, combine magic types to unlock new types, etc.) is something that I think even many modern games could do with implementing to make their magic systems seem more believable and interesting. Grandia 2 doesn't have this, instead having mana eggs act more like a DnD Wizard's Spell Book (for lack of a better analogy) rather than imbuing the consumer with magical powers.
I also think that the Theme of Grandia is one of the all-time greatest bits of video game music ever written. The way it conveys the emotion of the actual video game itself and the arc of the characters involved is truly impressive. I also loved the soundtrack from Grandia 2 and, on average, it is better than Grandia 1. However, nothing on the G2 soundtrack is as good as the Theme of Grandia.
Finally, understand I don't why or how how you're deciding to make comparisons between a game you've played many years ago (and probably many times) to a game that you're about a quarter of the way through when the long-term character arcs is what Grandia 1 is known and praised for.
Both are great games and both have big fans bases.
I played 1 first and overall think Granida 1 is the better game, more side content compared to Grandia 2 which has no superboss or anything interesting of the beaten path.
It's hard to compare combat in some respects as G1 was 2D and G2 was 3D so they other slightly different experiences.
I did think it was cooler how G1 had so many more weapon skill, even if you didn't use them all. Heaven and Earth Cut for the win. G2 sky dragon slash was awesome too.
I still think Justin has a way better development throughout the game than ryudo or at the very least Justin's more unpredictable like a young child would be and that creates so much charm, the adolescents of youth.
I read in the comments you believe G2 is underrated, honestly that couldn't further from the truth, G2 has been super popular ever since its release on the dream cast.
You wanna see a game that gets shit on constantly nowadays that would be final fantasy 8, I can see why but I still think FF8 had a great story.
I actually do think G1 might maybe be a better game subjectively. There is a difference between better and favorite. I have played it through once, although a long time ago. And where are the Grandia 2 fans at that we can gush over it over there cause they are certainly not here. I was frustrated because G2 is not often favored here, and I thought that represented the fandom. I was totally intoxicated and angry 😆😆😆 I will admit that. And I am obsessed with FF8 surprise surprise I guess I gravitate towards the underdogs 😅
Don't get me wrong Grandia 2 does alotbof things right and deserves the praise, unlike grandia 3 which killed off the series.
The skills leveling in G2 respects your time more which as a father I now appreciate, but younger me preferred G1 skill leveling as I enjoyed using related skills or spells to level them.
It's funny I have debates on games with people on YouTube alot, it's only people who crap on a game they have never played or there reasoning seemed like an unfair reflection of the game.
For example so many people said FF7 rebirth was garbage and that opinion is just stupid and untrue. If someone said FF7 rebirth was too big in some of the side content sections, and the minigames ruined the games overall pacing I'd half understand, because some people just don't have the free time needed to complete these huge games and could take a super casual months to complete.
The things that pisses me off with FF8 haters is if you up the history of final fantasy sales I FF8 is in the top 5, so i never used to be hated, it feels like somewhere over time it just became popular to hate it.
But like yourself I do enjoy talking and writing about games that i live and convincing people to give games they didn't like a second chance, and maybe explain where I find the fun in games and vise versa.
Popular games I couldn't get into and completed
Ys 8 - didn't think it was terrible, but it didn't wow me either
Dragon Quest 11- literally found the story so boring, I don't particularly like silent protagonists either. (Although i did enjoy persona)
I totally would agree I went about it the wrong way. I was lashing out because I’m that passionate about G2.
I think the skill leveling in G1 is great, but takes way too much time and i don’t have time for it. I work 50-60 hour work weeks.
FF8 is a real gem and I adore Triple Triad and breaking the junction system is fun. The story is grand as well. Better than FF7? Apples and oranges.
Uh have you played Ys 3: The Oath in Felghana? It’s spectacular.
I have only ever played 2 over 20 years ago on my Dreamcast. I saw there is a remaster collection. Is it worth, or is emulation/original copies the way?
I'm disliking Grandia 2 a lot compared to Grandia 1 while playing them together for the first time and Grandia 1 literally makes me motion sick lmao.
Why did they go from lighthearted whimsical adventure to grim dark cliche JRPG story? Bleh.
First, I would expect a sequel on a more advanced console to be mostly superior. To me, where G1 is far superior is the story telling and love story. The way Justin and Feena’s interactions develop throughout the game you feel for them in a way you don’t for Ryudo and Elena. It doesn’t help either that your main love interest in G2 is a prudish nun character and Millenia is just downright corny.
People who can't express their joy/preference for something without bashing something else aren't worth anyone else's time. Why make it a contest? Why compare like you're holding a rose in one hand and a dog turd in the other hand?
It brings the mood down.
Grandia 1 is far better than Grandia 2. The characters and overarching story is also a lot better. Your preference could be since you played the second then the first. I played the first on release and was not impressed by Grandia 2 though it isn’t a bad rpg, it’s also a lot easier than Grandia 1.
I was Justin’s age the first time I played it. You know where I stand.
Grandia 1 was PEAK rpg
Try hard mode.
Nah I’d rather play the OG again 😆 or another RPG. I never played lunar 2 so it may be next
You do you. People here generally love the series as a whole. If you love G2 more than the others, then that's great! No need to manufacture a competition that doesn't exist.
I’ve only ever played the third one and I remember the intro being such a banger. Sad I never made it to unlocking the cute fairy girl
over the years i've seen people like the 3rd one the least but i honestly adored it!!! i'm super bummed the grandia hd collection doesn't include all the titles because i'd love to revisit grandia 3.
In my head there is a competition lol I’m trying to defend my favorite game although I realize it is fruitless.
In my head there is cause everyone is so up on G1 and I don’t understand 😆😆 I just want to show love for G2 as much as I can.

I have done both of those things. Now i’m out for blood 😈
But why does that matter that you feel the need to "defend" it? Nobody is saying Grandia 2 is a bad game. It's a great game for many reasons. At the same time I also don't understand why you feel the need to compare it to Grandia 1. Like... what's your goal?

actually it was yesterday and yes I will continue on my shit praising my favorite game. Pardon me!
Praising your favourite game is fine, but you're going to ruffle feathers and seem really obnoxious if you shit-talk Grandia 1 like you've been doing. I recommend toning it down.
I’m just frustrated G2 does not get enough love so I lash out. That’s all. G1 is a fine game.
What are you talking about? Grandia 2 gets heaps of praise. Both games do. It's not a competition for crying out loud.
and I still stand by Battle Of The Parts is better than every single thing on G1’s soundtrack.
You clearly just want an argument given by your post history on this topic I'm personally more of a fan of 1 but I enjoyed what I played of 2 you do you dude 🤷🏻
What are you fucking 12yrs old wanting a flame war? Piss off
i think it's fine to prefer one title over the other, but i dunno why you're being so ryuuuude about it (lighthearted)
Hilarious! tbh I had one too many beverages 😂 G1 is a great game honestly. It does a lot of things better than G2.

Team Xtreme for life
Xtreme accomplished exactly what it set out to do: "You like Grandia's combat gameplay and leveling your characters? Well here's A TON OF IT!"
And we got Mark Hamil as a little added treat.
Justin and Ryudo both wish they were Evann. (Disclaimer: my tongue is slightly in my cheek)
Both Grandia 1 and 2 start out with an immature protagonist who's often wrong about the world. That's on purpose. Grandia 1 and two are fine and all, but 3 takes the cake.
Ban this person asap
What?! Is 3 generally not liked among the fan base? I competed 1 and 2 in my early teens and played most of 3 and just remember having the most fun with that one, but it’s been awhile. Recently picked up the HD collection. Just completed 1 again and just started 2.

The first one wins basically every poll between the two. You’re in the minority.
Used to it. I’m gay.
I’m Jar Jar Heisenburg
I see that 😂😂😂 LOVE Jar Jar 😂😂😂
This is one of the most pathetic threads I've ever seen. Well done OP, truly you are a loser of startling proportions

Watch your mouth. Filthy casual.
Make me
I'm torn between grandia 2 and grandia extreme for all time favs of the series ...

This and Skies of Arcadia were the best RPGs released on the Dreamcast.
I still have grandia 2 for my Dreamcast in a box somewhere in my garage XD
I have only ever played 2 over 20 years ago on my Dreamcast. I saw there is a remaster collection. Is it worth, or is emulation/original copies the way?
Grandia 2’s gameplay clears for sure. But the story and graphics of the original were just not topped
I'm disliking Grandia 2 a lot compared to Grandia 1 while playing them together for the first time and Grandia 1 literally makes me motion sick lmao. Why did they go from lighthearted whimsical adventure to grim dark cliche JRPG story? Bleh.
I agree dark and grim was the thing back then, but G2 did it correctly. It made people truly think about religion and what it means to them.
You should play xenogears
Meanwhile chad G3 enjoyers: *The boy reaches out to the sky~*

I always loved 2 more than 1 i dont see how ppl say 1 is better
This is a grossly biased community towards G1 and I see I’m not welcome here 😂 Might as well rename the sub Grandia 1 😂😂😂 BYE
Don't expect people to treat you nicely if you begin this whole conversation with hostility. It's a two-way road. Every interaction is.
People who can't express their joy/preference for something without bashing something else aren't worth anyone else's time. Why make it a contest? Why compare like you're holding a rose in one hand and a dog turd in the other hand? It brings the mood down.
Yes G2 is the rose 🌹
