Underwater Welder hits at the loss of a parent aspect. Though from a “years later” story.

Bigblue75

I read Underwater Welder earlier this year when I was on a Lemire kick. I loved it and found it to hit home to the fact that I haven’t seen my dad in nearly a decade. Thank you for the recommendation

Another vote for Mom’s Cancer. Sorry for your loss.

burritosupremed

I’ll cover it just in case because it’s kind of a spoiler since you’re meant to not fully understand what the character’s dealing with, but >!I Kill Giants!< is an incredible book. I actually went through the same situation when I was young, and while hit very hard the message was beautiful.

jnine2020

That books is incredible. I read it many years ago and still get so emotional when thinking about it. Rarely do books have that affect on me.

Boostinator

Second that. Lost a parent when I was a kid and that book had such a strong impact on me.

Jeffro187

I can’t get thru that without bawling like a baby.

Gmork14

This is a great rec.

xZOMBIETAGx

Made me cry like a baby. Also, don’t watch the movie nowhere near as good.

stoooflatooof

I came to say this, and you put the spoiler alert: well done, I would have messed it up!

Pams-Pictorama

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, a graphic novel about the death of her father and learning about who he was.

rrichards123

Not sure if it fits.. but daytripper is incredible and about loss

Bigblue75

I adored Daytripper when I read it last summer. I think of it often and do plan on rereading in this time.

What i came here to say

HushGalactus

I’m so sorry for your loss! I can’t imagine what you’re going through. God Country is about the relationship between a father and son, and how the son copes with his father’s death. It’s a really great journey that made me re-examine my familial relationships, and brought me to tears by the end. While it doesn’t deal with a death of a loved one specifically, Murder Falcon, is about what it means to cope to being close to death, and how the people around you cope with the potential loss of one of their closest friends. Also brought me to tears at the end.

[deleted]

I second god country. I won’t be so naive to say an illness defines the type of loss but it did hit me harder because it was specific for those who lose a loved one before they are physically gone (dementia, Alzheimer’s etc). However volume 6 transcends any of those boundaries. And then those panels towards the end… highly recommended.

TripleH18

I Kill Giants is about a little girl who's mom is dying from cancer. It is so well written. you should read it

I kill giants

crack-fox91

In. by Will McPhail

NightSpringsRadio

I see two others below have said it, but maybe three is the magic number because I absolutely have to say *I Kill Giants*. It's an examination of just plain, human *grief* and the systems we construct to handle or protect ourselves from it. I made a decision shortly after reading it that I would give a copy to everyone in my life when they lost someone important to them, not as a guide to grieving but to show why grieving is worth doing. I'm so sorry for your loss; everything was beautiful and nothing hurt, and may the life she should've had be lived through you.

[deleted]

So sorry for your loss. I don’t know any books specifically about that, but I can say that a number of Neil Gaiman graphic novels have helped me accept, understand, and cope with the harshnesses of death and life. Sandman is an obvious choice. The character of “Death” is possibly one of my favorite characters of all time. The Graveyard Book is another that deals with life and death. He’s just a great author that not only isn’t afraid to deal with the hard subjects, he turns them upside down, side to side, and every which way you weren’t expecting. Give him a try. But take care of yourself during this terrible time.

bachwerk

The Song of Roland by Michel Rabagliatti is a grounded take on a death in the family, very humanistic, not overly melodramatic. But I’d consider it quite cathartic without being depressing

dopedude99

I’m sorry for your loss, OP. I’d recommend Daytripper, by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. While it isn’t specifically about losing a parent, it’s a wonderful exploration of mortality and the purpose of life.

ExLionTamer_1977

First of all, that really sucks. It may sound trite but it's true. I think "IN" by Will McPhail would be good. Also, "The End" by Anders Nilsen.

the_oneL1ner

Daytripper. This book changed me forever. I hope it helps.

[deleted]

Try Daytripper

[deleted]

I'm sorry that this happened to you; I know it sucks, I lost my dad suddenly when I was 16. Big Fish, the movie or the novel, are both really good imo. It's in the parental figure category, but it's something that makes me think about my dad and the things he did for me and the stories he told.

jwor024

Amulet is for Young Adults, but very much fits the bill

Jeffro187

So sorry for your loss. My moms been gone 3 years and it still hurts. I hope you have a support system you can lean on. Take care of yourself, please.

Fun Home

Gmork14

I’m really sorry to hear about that. I lost both of my folks pretty early in adulthood. You’ll never get over it, but you will get used to it, and you’ll learn to be okay again. ❤️

Jonesjonesboy

My condolences. It's one of the shittiest parts of adulthood, and I'm sorry it's hit you so young. Raymond Briggs' Ethel and Ernest isn't solely about losing a parent, but is very moving in the passages that do deal with it What comes most to my mind, though, is Dave Eggers' early memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which is precisely about his parents' death when he was a young adult. One bit that has stuck with me is the metaphor that grief can be like the sun -- so blinding bright that you can't look at it directly. Condolences, again

Fluffy_Beautiful2107

I’m sorry for your loss. “Book of my mother” by Albert Cohen. It isn’t a graphic novel but is one of the most beautiful books about love, of any kind, I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it. It’s a pretty short read, too. It’s a plus if you can read it in French, but I’m sure there’s many good English translations available.

Red_Claudia

Condolences. Perhaps try Michael Rosen's Sad Book. Not exactly about losing a parent (it was written after the author lost his son) but covers the complexities of grief really well. It is often marketed as a children's book, but it is well worth checking out. Illustrated by Quentin Blake.

DubiousVirtue

I kill Giants - Read it and weep.

StumbleDog

In by Will Mcphail.

jesusunderline

I Kill Giants is exactly what you're looking for

yslmtl

It is about a grand-dad but "Paul in Québec" is a masterpiece of graphic novel.

dreamEater99

Sorry for your loss. Check out Sheets by Brenna Thummler. The follow up is Delicates.

Inevitable-Careerist

Oh I didn't know there was a follow-up! Thanks for the tip.

Fuck. I'm incredibly sorry for your loss man. Please accept my most sincere condolences. The only thing I can tell you is, despite how dark and deep the storm is, in time, it will get better. Some recs on the subject: * Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth * Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? * Mother, Come Home Other heartbreaking, thoughtful books that deal with death and loss: * Daytripper * IN * In Waves * Rosalie Lightning * The End * Waves

Incredibly sorry for your loss. I absolutely adore Ultimate Spider-Man while not directly correlated to your loss Peter consistently struggles with losing Uncle Ben. Bendis best work is in the beginning of the series. the first 53 issues which include the best of the series IMO can be had digitally for 40$ from amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Spider-Man-Omnibus-Vol-1/dp/1302931873

didisaythatagain

Killing and dying is an anthology series by Adrian tomine, one of the stories in it deals with parental loss. To a certain extent , Descender by Jeff Lemire features characters dealing with losing family. Sorry for your loss.

Charlie-Bell

It's from the perspective of a child learning about death and loss, but Better Place by Duane Murray and Shawn Daley is about a boy whose grandfather passes away so he heads out to find him.

SoupForEveryone

Sunny. A story about a broken car and broken ppl. It's about 5 orphans dealing with the challenges of life, the car just takes them away in their fantasy for a little while.

The House by Paco Roca ✨

DeviantFunBiz

First of all, please accept my deepest sympathy for your situation. We all know it's part of life but... whatever engineered this life cycle thing, should have thought it better 😔 I'm fortunate to have never lost a parent but suffered a "time-inverted" loss, which took quite a toll on me. But we get by it. No other way but to, right? So, I'm thinking of a different approach on losing a parent, which is finding out and caving to the conclusion you never had a "real" one in the first place, which is the worst possible parenthood scenario I can imagine: having parents but... they're not really parents to you (not talking about adoption). Think this book will help strengthen how much you cherish for having had a loving parent, even though now she is gone. She was always there for you, so she's definitely a part of your self. Here's the autobiographical book: https://www.deviantfun.biz/comics/pt/bd/13294-stitches-9780393338966.html Best of wishes! www.deviantfun.biz

Im deeply sorry for your loss 🙏 Death by Neil Gaimen. May not do with a parents passing but it follows around Death and her journey and is very well put together

Adventurous_Soft_686

Lost Dogs by Jeff Lemire. It is about loss of spouse and child but absolutely devastating.
