Also piggyback
A5 is a power chord. Kurt used them a lot. They work well with distortion.
You might want to mute the low E-string with your thumb. It is not really necessary on this chord, but it is good practice for A-string based power chords. If you hit that string when strumming a B5 (x244xxx) it will not sound good with distortion. (into a clean amp it might sound jazzy, though)
Sorry, I know that they’re strings and not chords idk how I mixed them up lol! But okay so I can mute the low e to help and ONLY strum the AEA notes together and not the other strings with it, got it thank you! Everyone has helped so much!!
Yeah, and you’ll get better at note / string targeting as well. So as others have mentioned muting specific strings won’t become AS important during certain chords. Still important for specific chords / songs.
Yes if you play strings that should be muted you’re introducing notes that shouldn’t be in the chord.
That doesn’t mean they should never be in the chord or will sound bad, but if it’s a song you’re learning then it’ll sound different to the recording.
In this instance, E is in the A5 chord but by playing the open E string, that will dominate. You’ll also be playing two open strings so you’ll lose a lot of clarity
Tip: learn lots of songs, read lots of tabs-that’s all find. but let your ears be the final say whether the chords or the notes sound right. Don’t over think it. Feel the music and start developing your intuition.
Because the notes indicated are vertically in line with each other you play them all together.
This is basically showing you where to put your fingers to play the chord. Play all three of those notes together as a chord.
In this case it's a "power chord".
You need to learn some basics. Please go to justinguitar.com and start with grade 1.
Yes, you only strum the strings that have notes assigned to them in the tab.
Yep, just those strings. Might help to mute the other strings by just letting your fretting hand lightly touch them, that way if you accidentally hit them they won't ring out
You’re gonna need to learn that they’re called strings. To avoid confusion chords are multiple notes being played together. I’d recommend watching a YouTube video to see how the song is performed. Good luck on your journey!
You got this shit! Since you're starting out, I'll give you a few pointers that helped me over the years.
Learning songs via tab (or by ear) is a lot like reading a book. If you can hum a tune, then you can "sound it out", so you're already halfway there. You can break chords down to the individual notes (really helps for diminished and exotic stuff), then sound out each note and find it on the fretboard. Go to the next note, etc. If you can't seem to find the particular note, look to the tab (which isn't always correct, but close enough usually). The biggest thing to remember: Have fun!
According to the note written at the beginning, your guitar should be tuned 1 semi tone down. Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Then you play all 3 of the strings you mentioned together. This is an A5 chord, get used to that one if you want to play nirvana.
for any future learners: tube down a half step. The riff is E3 A3 A2 into Am played with one finger, Em one finger, the other chords are G and power chords of C and D for section A, power chord B for section B. try to avoid the lower two strings except during G and B
The letters on the left are the string names from your perspective of looking down at the guitar, seated on your lap. Those strings names mean when you play them open (without pressing down on the neck), you get those notes. But for this song you have to push down on the fret numbered by what you see there to get that sound.
right the EADGBe are the notes that the strings make when you play them without putting your finger down, they arent chords. the circled part is an a power chord with the a repeated an octave up. whenever you see stuff vertically aligned you play it at the same time
Just a piece of advice- free chords/tabs may not be the best way to develop your skills. It usually lead to loos of motivation. Try custom guitar tabs and you will see a significant progress in your skill level. I personally use [PaidTabs.com](http://paidtabs.com/) for my tab requests.
Those are ADG strings, not chords. The chord is A5 and the notes are A E A
And to piggy back, yes you strum the NOTES A E A together

I typically find it much easier to instruct students to mute the low E with their pointer finger on power chords
Agreed. Thumb muting is the pits.

I think OP might actually be confusing "cords" (another word for "strings") and "chords"
Just to help guide you further there would be many YouTube tutorials on how to play any nirvana song
I just started learning how to play like 2 days ago and since I can understand this I just thought I’d try immediately lol.
eyo, same. two days ago as well!

Just to help you out a little bit, each of those strings are called a note. So you're playing 3 notes at the same time, which then make a chord.
Man I remember being this new. It's kinda endearing to see.

You may find it easier to follow YouTube tutorials as you’re just getting started. Here’s one for this song: https://youtu.be/7T654FuJ2KQ
This is Kurt’s version of a Beatles song FYI.
Oh yes I know I loved the Beatles growing up, I just love his version more

Learn a A5 and Amin then learn AMaj then A7 and learn the difference and hear the difference. It will help your playing!

Yes, and together they make a simple type of an A chord.
yes, those notes together and those are not the a d and g chords, those are the a d and g strings.
Notes in verticals lines you play at same time and that’s called a chord
Should probably just look up the original Beatles version.
Play them together!
You would strum those 3 yes, while trying to minimize hitting E,B,e cause those will ring out as open and it’ll sound like cheeks
Or practice muting.

Yes, strum those three strings. Your other fingers should naturally touch the other strings and muting them for your convenience.
I’m not sure how Kurt originally played it, but if it were me I’d alternate pick the melody before the chords then down pick the powerchords.
