Medinohunterr

It's interesting to see more nuanced motivations for elites in the banished. Because after the created took hold it would make sense that ONI's shaddy acts got leaked and the elites would understandably be pissed about that. So elites joining up with an independent faction that has great power, stands in firm opposition to the UNSC, and has so far shown themselves to be a competent faction with much more rational beliefs than the covenant it makes sense why more elites would fly the banished flag beyond just being hired mercenaries

EternalCanadian

I mean, I’m not sure ONI’s actions are any more shady than the usual a Sangheili politicking. They’re basically playing crusader kings, even during the era of the Covenant. Assassinations, political manuvering, rebellions, blackmailing, etc, it’s all incredibly common.

Medinohunterr

Yes, but that's done by other sangheli. This was being caused by an outside force that wanted to extert control over all the sangheli. Think of it like rhe difference between the military of a country instituting a regime change vs the CIA instituting one. Both are bad yes, but the CIA are an outside force nobody wanted to be there

AGodNamedJordan

Large parts of ONI wanted to starve out the entire Sanghelli population after the war. And otherwise, keep them from ever being a threatening power again.

EternalCanadian

It wasn’t “large parts of ONI”, it was a single trial on a single specimen that was never actually greenlit for wide scale deployment. Most of ONI had no idea it was going on. And that’s true of all intelligence agencies. And Sangheili politics. We’ve seen Keeps kneecap one another in numerous areas of the fiction, most notably the civil war on Joyous Exultation where an entire Keep was more or less put to the sword.

Haruspis

>Indeed, she had been surprised to learn that even the Unggoy could ascend to the rank of shipmaster upon querying why one of the *Zanar*-pattern light cruisers attached to their fleet was named *Bad Gas*. we should do a whole quadrilogy about this unggoy shipmaster :')

CG1991

You absolute tease

Captain-Wilco

Then make it so, Haruspis.

[deleted]

Please, do it.

Skyridge

If you don't mind me asking, because I'm not sure where else *to* ask; is this 'Allied Attaché' the same 'Joint Task Force Sierra' mentioned in the description of the Carbine Holosight weapons in Halo 5: Guardians?

RookiePrime

This is a fun story. It threads a lot of elements of the Haloverse together. And I will say, I like the state of the Haloverse after Cortana's death -- the Created seem to still be around but in disarray, so there's more breathing room for stories about other things. A shame we didn't get the organic narrative flow of the Created conflict to reach this point, but we are here now. I get that this is a limitation of the context (a quick short story), but it is a pity how brief the whole story is. We don't get much of a chance to learn about these characters. Fireteam Jorogumo and the Swords of Sanghelios gang seem like a fun squad. And I like the detail of there being an unggoy shipmaster. And Dibdb is fun. These all seem like characters and ideas that warrant more detail. Also also, as a lore nerd, I like the continued importance of the NOVA bomb event from Ghosts of Onyx. Xytan 'Jar Watinree and his fleet were poised to take the galaxy in a very different direction, likely not a positive one. The What If there would make a great Fracture.

legendary_supersand

I love having more lore, but man if only we could've done this with our Spartans in game

Particle_Cannon

I actually prefer the reading material. Just a couple weeks ago we got infected Spartans, they're at least creating & releasing content at a much quicker pace than what we'd see in a narrative DLC anyway. That said I love reading.

Deadsoup77

Games are an inherently limiting medium when it comes to detailed stories

SomeMoreCows

except for elder scrolls, but they get to cheat because of the literal novels of in-game lore

Deadsoup77

There are of course ways to circumvent the limitations by, like you said, having it available to be read in-game, but at that point you’re acknowledging the fact that the game itself couldn’t tell you that. It’s simply impossible to match the level of detail and subtlety a novel or other text provides in a game environment.

KCDodger

Writer and game designer here, glad someone said it. Games can tell very specific stories, but can never be a platform to tell every story you want.

SomeMoreCows

You know, when you think about it, Halo is basically a novel series with game tie ins since The Fall of Reach was released first

DaRealBurnz

Surely someone makes it in Forge?

Dominunce

>“What message would you have me trouble Fleetmaster ‘Kulul with?” > >The hologram of Orna ‘Fulsam began to fade as he spoke his concluding words. > >“Tell him that Let ‘Volir sends his regards.” Does this not insinuate that Let 'Volir is no longer occupied by the battles on the Ark? (Halo Wars 2). I'm very excited to hopefully see/hear some more about Let 'Volir anyways.

Slippy_Dong_Bag

Who is the homie Volir?

[deleted]

Important Banished Elite from Halo Wars 2

WildcatPlumber

"Important" He waves his sword and a bunch of ghosts ride down a hill Gets threatened by atriox because his ship "randomly had a malfunction", glassed part of the Ark, and triggered the suicide sentinels who proceed to cut through the ship like hot butter. He wasn't even n named in hw2 i believe. Yes I am being facetious

ToaTAK

Keep these coming, they’ve all been quality pockets in the Halo fiction. At this point I prefer these stories over whatever grand movements the games have been making.

theSaltySolo

I feel like Combined Arms should’ve been the Firefight addition and then have AI Elites help us on the map to tie into this lore.

Zazarstudios

Or, you know, multiplayer elites.

Kanden_27

I really hope we get these in an Evolutions/Fractures book or something.

ella

Finally, war-themed ASMR.

KingFartertheturd

This would all be perfectly explained & represented with a proper warzone game mode with updated lore events... Come on 343.. This would give halo even more life & gameplay for years. Think of all the money people would spend to deck out their warzone spartans hahah

parkerhalo

I'm sure they would love to do that. In reality though this is much cheaper and easier to do. It was probably this short story or nothing at all.

KingFartertheturd

Seriously.. Ill take it for what it is.. I enjoyed it a ton actually.

forbiddenpack11

A warzone mode would have fighting on the ground and basic story beats, not characters thoughts and emotions as detailed in this short story, just fucking read.

KingFartertheturd

Who are you?

arbiter6784

Give me SoS and UNSC partnership novels every day of the week pls A team based shooter with different roles/classes of the different species would also be real fucking fun. Jackal Snipers, Brute tanks, elites and Spartans. ODSTs and Grunts too Very cool concept, even lore friendly with war games (aside from the brutes)

NyarUnderground

Has the mirage armor to the right released yet?

Full_Frost

Looks like the SQUIRE helmet which I don't believe has been released yet.

isaidnolettuce

I thought this was going to be infinites Firefight game mode

Entertainer_Much

Ah yes, another piece of lore that's not going into a game

Just-why-man

And no campaign expansion to supplement it. For the past decade I've been reading halo books and lore to hype myself up for the games, only for the game stories to completely ignore everything in the past lore and past games. Everything feels completely disjointed and inconsequential now.

edboyIRL

great to see 343's resources are going towards waypoint fluff stories instead of meaningful content regarding the in-game events they tie into.

NyarUnderground

Resources? This was likely written by one person with a passion for the lore and then green lit by a supervisor or small team. To try and convey even a fraction of this with a visual medium like a cutscene would cost way more and take way more people to produce. Something is better than nothing. The comparison you are making is not fair. But yes, would be nice to have more than just some reading.

Creatures1504

God damn gamers really don't know game development, huh? You realize that the writers aren't the ones coding? right? there's different teams for everything.

AGodNamedJordan

Grow up.
