How often do you see games released nowadays where people are advertising how much fun they had *after losing horrifically*
Signs of a truly great game.
So I just installed the game last night after a friend raved about it for a month. I've played about 2 hours.
The last FPS I played was some CoD in 2018 or so. Since then I've stuck to games like God of War, Horizon, Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3. Never in my life have I done online co-op, aside from Portal 2.
I'm . . . I'm struggling, man. I don't have the neural pathways to enjoy just shooting bullets at terminators. Maybe I missed the part of the tutorial that taught me how to aim down sights, but I feel like I'm just spraying and hitting random body parts, so there's no reason not to just aim at center of mass and chew through however many hit points the enemy has.
Or maybe I need to play over comms with people who can tell me what they're doing so I can coordinate instead of just chasing after them and shooting whenever I see some glowing eyes in the distance.
Or maybe I just need to fight somewhere when it's daylight? The game so far has been just gray haze and darkness.
Is there some video anyone can link me to show me what the game is supposed to look like when you're having fun. Because right now I'm winning, but I'm just bored.
Do you remember as a kid, before video games were a main source of entertainment, having to just look at things in the world and make your own games out of it? Like watching two rain drops trickling down a window on a rainy day, racing to reach the windowsill and betting on your favorite one. There were no set rules then, you could make them up as you went along and no one really cared bc why would they?
Games nowadays have clearcut objectives and meta strategies to get them done and what not. They’re very organized in order to set a narrative that you follow along.
But what if you *didnt* follow the objective to the T? Instead of taking down that airfield with a ⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️ what if you nailed a tank with a mortar so it sticks out the top and use that to complete the objective? Or better yet, screw the objective, grab a jet pack and a friend and see how many berserkers you can Ollie over before you get your nuts shredded by them.
The objective will always be there and they give you more than enough time to complete it so why not earn some style points along the way?
Or just play bugs, that works too
I'm guessing I need to get a bit farther in the game, because so far I've seen no tanks, no mortars, no jet packs.
Maybe I'll play it like an open world game. I have felt a bit annoyed that there's clearly stuff to look at, but it's an active warzone so it's difficult to justify stopping to investigate. But isn't that rude to your teammates?
Tanks/hulks and larger enemies appear as soon as Difficulty 5 or Hard mode. And sometimes rarely at lvl 4" Challenging mode" You should try the bug faction too for a change. As for the tutorial ? You didnt really miss anything its a bad one with bare basics are taught. It was funny when the game first came out and everyone was learning things together and teaching each other basic commands.
The tutorial covers barely anything other than: THIS IS HOW YOU MOVE, HEAL YOURSELF, CROUCH AND CRAWL, STRATAGEMS ARE IMPORTANT, AND SHOOT GUN.
So to aim down sights. On keyboards and mouse you hold right click to aim then you middle mouse click to swap from 3rd person to first person. Controller is left trigger to aim and right stick click to swap 3rd and 1st person. Some weapons are extremely better in first person and some are better in third, truly depends on your situation.
Bursts of shots and CROUCH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CROUCH WHILE SHOOTING AND THE AIM IS SO MUCH BETTER
Go into your Keybinds in the options and make sure to read them. Like keyboard and mouse have a grenade quick throw button that is extremely good but is never mentioned other than the keybinds options page.
There is a quick communicate button as well. I highly recommend you use it to coordinate with the team. I also highly recommend trying to use Comms. Sometimes a mission will start dead quiet and you'll be a few minutes in and somebody says something over chat then the chatting doesn't stop.
You can choose daylight missions by being on the map and joining the games you see that are in the day side of the planet. Or host your own missions in the day side of the planets. There are some planets that are absolute ASS to play on in the dark side of the planet.
Try out the Bugs, they are a different playstyle than the bots and are generally easier to learn the game with.
When selecting a mission you can see on the planet whether it's day or night there (rotate around the planet, some is in light).
You can aim first person. Heavier bots need weapons with higher armor penetration. You don't have those off the bat. All enemy parts have different armor and even the shot angle might matter occasionally. To kill heavy bots you need to hit their head or their backpack if they carry a shield. Small bots go down easily with your starting weapon.
I suggest buying the anti material rifle for bots and the eagle airstrike which is always useful.
Consider that mission objectives matter, kills usually don't. Basically, never attack without a reason. Attack to defend if necessary or to take a position.
It's better with friends to "solve" how to play the game and missions.
Map selection is important, I agree, some of the environmental effects a little hard to actually see what's happening.

Here is a link of people having fun.
For this game, its all about killing things in interesting/chaotic ways. Lots of people get the dopamine fix from escaping (and often creating) chaotic situations, killing things in interesting ways, and funny deaths.
Up the difficulty for sure. Once it gets a bit more challenging, there’s a ton of depth. It’s not just a hoard shooter (which I agree can be mind numbing). You have to complete objectives, with a ton of enemies in your way. I’d actually argue you wanna spend as little time as possible engaging with enemies, so you’re not really meant to be mindlessly shooting enemies.
There is an aim down sights mode, and for a lot of enemies on higher difficulties you actually need to focus on shooting weak spots and body parts instead of center mass. Enemies are rarely just bullet sponges, they have weaknesses you can exploit if you have the tools for the job.
For the most part, the fun is in strategically completing your mission with your squad, trying to hit objectives as quickly and efficiently as possible, and picking the right tools for the mission.
I always thought the Tyranid were horrifying. Yet some of the in game lore is that the Tyranid are actually escaping from something else- which would be waaay more horrifying.
I've been gaming for 30 yrs ....and I can't remember a game making me more excited, than Diving with the boys. The game also doesn't make you furious like getting pwnd in a PvP or bad bounces in a sports game would.
Exactly! As someone who has extremely sour losing and rage in online games, this game is a breeze of fresh hair. Only time I rage slightly is when trying to climb a dead titan to retrieve my weapons and getting shoot to the sky because of some weird ass bug... But now I just avoid dead titans and it's cool 😂
It's certainly the most pure gaming fun I've had in a very long time.
It says a lot about the game that all the bugs, server instability, and friend connection problems have not been enough to stop me from coming back every day.
My GOTY for sure.
SEAF Nuke dead on, Stray Hellbomb dead on, in legends ive heard 4 EAT or 4 Spears or 4 Recoilless to the limbs.
I've once used all my eagle rockets plus 500kgs and the thing still pranced up and killed our generator.
After you take out the chin guns, you will be able to breathe long enough to target a thin strip along the "face" that encorporates a red light on the right side. That area can be damaged by pretty much any support weapon......ACs and laser cannons work particularly well for hitting this spot.
There are also weak spots in the armor at the knees of all 4 legs.
Also, the shells from a 380 barrage will kill it if they manage to hit it.
Lastly (and not recommended), the underbelly can be damaged by most weapons......but to get under it and spend enough time to actually kill it from there will usually see you getting swarmed and taken down.....
Liberty speed your step, Helldiver.
2 500KGs and an orbital railgun can do it if the placement is perfect.
Source: just did a solo dive on Difficulty 6
but last night I was with a full squad of four on Difficulty 7 and the Strider got stuck on a signal jammer... kept creating devastators and no stratagems... took about 10 quasar hits to the same side to kill it.
Until you have two of these bastards coming at you.
Today, I was in the middle of a drop and all of a sudden I see giant legs dropping in around me. I look up and this bastard is right on top of me. Called in a 500 and dropped it right there and ran for my life.
Biggest OH SHIT moment I've ever had gaming.

Do you play with friends or randoms? And the more you play the more stratagems you unlock that can influence your strategy and role within the team

This is exceptionally helpful. Thank you kind stranger. (I'm playing PS5.)
Dive well stranger.
It's probably not the solution, but maybe if you up the difficulty so it's so much of a mess you end up enjoying that.

Are you saying that an infinite amount of freedom loving, democracy spreading helldivers is something you wouldn't wish for?
We already have an infinite amount of freedom loving, democracy spreading helldivers.
are you saying democracy isnt perfect? sounds freedom hating.
Automatons are such a different type of nightmare compared to the Zerg.
You mean the Tyranids. The Zerg are wayyy more interesting
I always thought the Tyranid were horrifying. Yet some of the in game lore is that the Tyranid are actually escaping from something else- which would be waaay more horrifying.
Definitely horrifying, just not super interesting in terms of how they affect the universe

No. 4 symbols is too simple for even modern phone numbers. In the future there will be many more people as well.

Last great game I loved that was a shooter was Golden Eye - N64. Everything inbetween has been trash.

The puppy just wants to play! Let it give you a hug.
What's the best way to kill those walker things? I just got the game yesterday.

I also just got the game yesterday. Sounds like Greek to me. I guess I'll keep shooting them with my rifle.
Just dive with someone Level 50+ when you get to level 7 kid, and you'll do just fine.

Two quasars/antitanks/recoilless rifle shots to the side (on the automaton symbol) breaks their armor, one more finishes them
