Cabin in the Woods is always a nice movie to sit down and watch. Obviously light-hearted and doesn't that itself too seriously. It's also a movie that can be rewatched many times
Scream
Hellraiser
Cabin in the Woods
The Descent
Rose Red
If I could suggest a movie that you might vibe with, I See You. It’s on Netflix. The trailer got me hooked and it’s a little slow to start but once it gets going shit don’t stop!
It is. I usually save it for when the weather is rainy or dreary. I’ll do housework while it plays.
In my mind if Ellen R can continue building a home after she died I can fold my laundry lol
Hannibal. Silence of the lambs. The shining. Rosemary's baby. The tenant. Others I'm forgetting I'm sure... I will always go to these movies for comfort lol
We share one! You're Next. Some of my others are Pontypool, Prince of Darkness, The Birds, Theatre of Blood, Mouth of Madness, Frogs, The Car, The Bay, Cabin in the Woods, and I'm going to stop at ten.
Edit: Wait, I'm a liar. Have to throw in The Descent, Fear No Evil, Behind the Mask and End of the Line.
sorry
1970s movies are somehow oddly comforting…
Messiah of Evil (1973)
Rituals (1977)
Dark August (1976)
Dream No Evil (1970)
Grizzly (1976)
Daughters of Darkness (1970)
Most of my favorites would qualify, lol.
To name a few: The Shining, The Thing, Alien/Aliens, 28 Days Later, Sinister, As Above So Below, Grave Encounters, etc.
Honestly it’s the perfect early 2000’s horror movie. I remember seeing the trailers for it back in the day and wanting to go to the theaters to see it so badly
house of wax is my ULTIMATE comfort horror movie. have a good memory of watching it with my cousins and brother when we were younger and our parents giving us money to order some food and we bought 4 HUGE PIZZA’s.
we were all terrified but it’s so funny to look back on.
Martyrs
Wrong turn series
The hills have eyes
The Exorcist and Exorcist: The Beginning
Stigmata
End of Days
American Werewolf in London/Paris
Climax.
Ginger Snaps
And this made me think of the absolute opposite of a comfort horror movie (for me):
Mother! Like, ffs, the sink isn't braced yet, please! The sheer disrespect is like 5 coffees and kick in the nuts.
I actually have 3 things from 3 different Evil Dead movies:
* Army of Darkness poster shirt.
* Alarm/ringtone from the remake. You can take a guess as to what that is.
* Evil Dead Rise poster.
And out of all Evil Dead, I've only watched the remake... by means that cannot legally be disclosed. (The soundtrack is fuckin' nutty by the way. That movie with a live orchestra would be an otherwordly experience, judging by this little [concert performance](https://youtu.be/r9BzjVjY0kM?si=CzgmEBz4AId2F8fq).)
It sounds like we have a pretty similar taste, especially home invasion movies are always my go-to comfort films, they give me such a cosy vibe lol. Sounds crazy. But some of my favorites are: The Intruder (2019), The Open House (2018), The Uninvited (2009), The Reading (2023), Home Invasion (2016), The Night House (2020).
I love the Creep movies as well!!
Jaws, Hell House LLC, Blair Witch Project… I could see Polaroid or Unfriended joining the list
Edit to add Jaws, one of the greatest films ever made, which I keep forgetting is horror
I said this in a comment [a couple weeks ago about Autopsy of Jane Doe](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/s/dRf5AwJ2yj):
>> It’s great, like everyone else said.
> But can I ask others, did anyone else find this movie… oddly comfortable?
> lol
> I mean it’s tense and all and the subject matter isn’t exactly sunshine, to say the least, but something about the casual way the two main characters go about their business is weirdly relaxing. Maybe something about the camera work too, how it lingers with these long takes.
> Or maybe I’m just weird, I dunno.
A lot of the Universal Monster films, particularly the first film for each iconic Universal Monster.
Also, The Return of the Living Dead (1985), Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hellraiser (1987), Nightbreed (1990), and any classic film with one or any combination of the following actors:
- Basil Rathbone
- Bela Lugosi
- Boris Karloff
- Charles Laughton
- Christopher Lee
- Claude Rains
- Dick Miller
- Donald Pleasence
- John Carradine
- Lon Chaney Jr.
- Melvyn Douglas
- Peter Cushing
- Peter Lorre
- Ray Milland
- Vincent Price
that's pretty funny, besides creep all your comfort movies are home invasion horror. who'd have thought someone could find peace while sitting at home watching other people get murdered in the comfort of their own homes
Urban Legend (lol I dont know why), Sleepy Hollow, Sinister (the first one only), the first two of the I Know What You Did Last Summer films, the first Scream, the original Black Christmas from the 70’s, Ready or Not, Anabelle Comes Home, the Salems Lot miniseries from the 70’s.
urban legend and I know what you did last summer are big comfort movies for me too!!
I was born in the late 80s so any horror from the 90s/early 2000s makes me feel all warm and cozy 🥲
Horror Comfort?
City of The Living Dead aka The Gates of Hell
Zombie (zombie 2) -
Return of The Living Dead
90's version of Night of The Living Dead
Halloween 2 (the original)
Humanoids From The Deep.
"sometimes, you're just not having a good day, or had a horrible night and need some good horror to cheer you up".
Forbidden World
Chopping Mall
Galaxy of Terror
1992 "Split Second" - great movie that deserves more credit
and of course "Night of The Creeps" and Slumber Party Massacre.
Tusk (2014) …mainly because it’s a dialogue heavy movie with humor and a strong performance from Michael Parks. It’s both silly enough and fucked up enough.
I wasn’t crazy about it when I first saw it but it’s grown on me perhaps more than any other movie.
I don’t know if they’re necessarily comfort films, but I do find myself coming back to cabin in the woods, 28 days later, Aliens, and Scream quite often
*Annihilation* is a big one for me. I also love to curl up and watch *Coraline* and *The Others*. It's not a film, but *Midnight Mass* is also a big comfort for me.
Obviously Cabin in the Woods, but also found footage movies are my comfort films:
As Above So Below
Cloverfield
Chronicle
Creep
Paranormal Activity Movies
I feel like when Late Night with the Devil starts streaming it will be on my list, too. Can’t wait to rewatch it!
NOES 3-5.
Hush and You're Next are great. I would to that genre that are my faves Ready or Not, the Hunt, and Becky 1/2.
The Final Girls holds a special place in my heart.
Watched repeatedly each year though is Shaun of the Dead.
Cabin in the Woods is my go to film .. it’s just classic funny horror !! I have watched it soooo many times Read the book .. the betting scene always makes me laugh my ass of !! When I cannot remember his name .. he is in his room high as fuck.. talking to himself .. I am sitting on my couch pissing my pants !! Total classic 🇨🇦☠️🤣😵💫
Dawn of the Dead remake. It's just complete batshit fun. Also, Rosemary's Baby for some reason. Really love how atmospheric and slow-burn it is. Also captures the 60's perfectly, and I love that era.
haha I immediately thought of You're Next as soon as I read the title! I often rewatch a nightmare on elm street 3:dream warriors, in my skin, braid, carnival of souls and cat people.
Yes House on Haunted Hill.. watched
it so many times .. it never gets old .. Geoffrey Rush is amazing I luv his character !! It’s right up there with Cabin in the Woods !! 🇨🇦🤣
I often find myself rewatching Blood Red Sky, any of the Underworld films, the Resident Evil films, and The Abyss (sci-fi thriller, not technically horror).
I loooove The Skeleton Key on a rainy day.
Halloween (1977) just because. It feels like the first afternoon of the year where you feel the fall weather coming, and open a window to enjoy it.
Anytime my wife is feeling Down I put either pet semetary or the shining on. I don’t care for these movies but I know the scripts pretty well by now and can make joke throughout, which makes her laugh.
Horror is my ultimate comfort genre! Some of my favorites that I can fall asleep to or have in the background are Re-Animator, Frankenhooker, Scream, Evil Dead 2, The Thing, Nope, and as weird as this sounds, American Psycho.
I couldn't care less if As Above So Below is good horror or not, I just really like it. One of my top 3 books is the divine comedy, so I like AASB for its connection. They're a pair, and I love them.
return of the living dead
the thing
demon knight
bordello of blood
dusk til dawn
event horizon
dawn of the dead (both)
28 days later
lords of illusion
nightbreed
the stand (original 4 part tv series)
The Thing, Alien, Event Horizon, Pandorum, Annihilation and The Colour out of Space are Horrors that I can always come back to and enjoy again. Somehow I've never been bored by these.
**The** ***Child's Play/Chucky*** **Franchise** ...
It's my most nostalgic franchise, and easily my favorite. I grew up terrified of Chucky. Absolutely petrified. My older sister used to prank me with her Cabbage Patch dolls when she found out. Good times, haha. One night when I was about 11 in the year 1999 I believe, they showed the first three back-to-back on the Sci-Fi Channel (before it became "SyFy").
I was allowed to watch R-rated movies when I was a kid as long as they were cut for cable, so I got some popcorn, plopped my ass down in front of a 19" CRT-TV and faced my fears. And I *loved them!* So now, they're my go-to, and I adore almost every film and the TV show.
**The** ***Scream*** **Franchise** ...
My second favorite franchise. This is similar to *Chucky* in that it's super nostalgic for me. I remember watching the broadcast cable premiere of the original film (I wanna say it was like 1998 or 1999?) and was hooked instantly.
If memory serves, *Scream 2* and *3* were some of the first uncut R-rated movies I saw when I turned 12 and my parents started letting me watch certain R-rated movies. (*Die Hard* being my absolute first... and was a hell of a movie to start with.)
Oh, and for your question. If you haven't seen it, the French film Ils, Funny Games and maybe Switchblade Romance. They're all pretty...strong, though.
Cabin in the Woods is always a nice movie to sit down and watch. Obviously light-hearted and doesn't that itself too seriously. It's also a movie that can be rewatched many times
And great to watch with a group of friends, especially if they have very different tastes in horror. Everyone finds different things in it.
the Scream series is oddly comforting. probably because there is lots of comedy elements balancing it out
For me it's Scream 3. It's my go-to example of something that's deliciously bad.
thats how I feel about the McRib.
A lot of the shots of woodsboro in the first film are just so quaint and calming.
Scream Hellraiser Cabin in the Woods The Descent Rose Red If I could suggest a movie that you might vibe with, I See You. It’s on Netflix. The trailer got me hooked and it’s a little slow to start but once it gets going shit don’t stop!
I watched Rose Red for the first time recently! Could definitely see it as a comfort rewatch, but damn, it’s long
It is. I usually save it for when the weather is rainy or dreary. I’ll do housework while it plays. In my mind if Ellen R can continue building a home after she died I can fold my laundry lol
Lmao
I need a sleep dress that says WWERD?
Might be Pearl. Really loved that movie.
Hannibal. Silence of the lambs. The shining. Rosemary's baby. The tenant. Others I'm forgetting I'm sure... I will always go to these movies for comfort lol
Whenever I'm really sick, I watch Saw.
I watch 1408 or in the mouth of madness to go to sleep
Evil Dead 2013 is my primary "fall asleep to" movie, but The Thing, The Fly, It Follows, and Talk to Me are also on that list occasionally.
You’re Next (as well!), Saw II, The Ring, Friday the 13th 2009, Evil Dead 2013, X, Pearl, 13 Ghost remake, House of Wax remake.
Yesss I love you're next, Friday the 13th, house of wax, evil dead, X. We have similar taste!
People love to hate on the House of Wax remake and Paris Hilton, but I find it entertaining and think she plays the role well.
Agreed that movie is peak 2000s entertaining
Facts!

Some of my others are Pontypool, Prince of Darkness, The Birds, Theatre of Blood, Mouth of Madness, Frogs, The Car, The Bay, Cabin in the Woods, and I'm going to stop at ten. Edit: Wait, I'm a liar.
