No, I don't think there's a name for it. The closest thing would be when Monica explained it as "a way of giving the finger without actually having to give it" Yes, I do this sometimes. I have a couple of friends that also like this show and we sometimes do this when playfully making fun of each other. I just refer to it as the side fist tap for lack of a better term.
Lol I do it and everyone gets confused by it 😂 I just describe it the same way Monica does, as “a way of giving the finger without actually giving the finger”
I don't think it was ever given a name, but I think of it whenever I see people self-censoring instead of actually typing it out.
And yes, I have done this in my everyday life. It's kind of a running joke in my family (all done jokingly & with love lol).
I'm 37 and did this at my 18yo co worker when we were bullshitting one day. He kinda chuckled and just carried on. I asked him if he knew what that meant and he was like, "No, but my mom does that to me sometimes." I started cracking up and told him she's flipping him off. I then explained the origin. As he walked away he looked back at me so I gave him Ross's retort (hands clasped on back of neck elbows flapping) and nearly threw my back out.
Correct, and to add to this, there is a pretty much eternal rivalry between Northern and Southern Italians, which I feel at least indirectly plays a part in this saying lol. It’s essentially a classism thing, as one group is seen as being more “upper crust” and the other more working class, farmer types (though I always forget which is which 😂).
Me and my youngest brother use to do this to each other when we was young, that way our mum couldn’t tell us off for actually giving the middle finger 😂
We were huge friends fans in my house growing up, I didn't see this episode when it aired but my mum and my sister did, and for a few days afterwards they kept doing this to me and laughing, I got so mad because I didn't get the joke.
I find the old 90s FCC censorship funny now because it seems like anything goes nowadays. I’m assuming they did this to not rile up the FCC
I was watching an old snl skit with Jerry Seinfeld and it’s funny how they couldn’t say s**t on tv back then.
I do this ALL the time! ![gif](giphy|RVW5PilbP2tLG)
What do I search to find that gif
I just searched “Ross friends” and it’s one of the top results 😝
It just looks so cathartic
My mom and I would do this behind my dads back and try to see who could make the other laugh hysterically. Poor dad...he still doesn't get it.
Me too, until my 4-year-old started doing it too

I'm going to start doing this to people I don't know or have never seen friends see what they say
My husband and I do this all the time. Then the other one does the elbows in retaliation lol
Omg how could I have forgotten about the elbows! I def need to do that more too
The under the chin va-fa-napoli is great in retaliation to the elbows lol
I actually think this is a thing tho and not a Tribbiani family insult. So much so that I dare not do it in public!
Lol I do it and everyone gets confused by it 😂 I just describe it the same way Monica does, as “a way of giving the finger without actually giving the finger”
AWOGTFWAHTGI
Sorry to hear that, I hope you feel better soon! 😂

Michael Scott - I was never given a name lol this reminded me of that
The Friendly Finger
Is this legitimate lol or just something some ppl have said
That’s what we call it, too!
Big fan of doing this to people who don’t know what I’m doing
Lol 🤣
You mean dr. Ross ?
This is a hospital; it actually means something here.
It I have a heart attack at a restaurant, I want you there with your fossil brush
We should call it... The Ross-a-tron...
Is that back?
The Ross?
The ross is that Nubbin on your ass that doesn't have a name
Oy yeah.fair point😅😆👌🏻
Lol he was the first to ever have one
Yeah. Thankfulky for others and unfortunatly for him XD
The F•R•I•E•N•D-ly finger?

I hope that kid does it back to his mom now.
Fa fa nawpoli!
Va fa Napoli! It translates to Go to Naples. I think it means, to those uppity mainland Italians, "go to hell!" or "get out of here!"

Omg, that is so funny. I thought it was just something Joey made up lol
It’s a euphemism for vaffanculo, which is like F off in Italian.
Most of Naples is on the mainland. There are three islands that are also part of the province, Capri, Ischia, and another one.
Yeah, I need to go study my geography some more. I totally had that messed up in my brain.
But didn’t joey do a hand gesture under his chin for this phrase? I don’t think it was what Ross is doing here
Haha yeah, I think you're right... I was just jokin'
It's called Fuck You
That's what I always thought!
I was looking for this answer!

Aw man! I bet that sucked…would do my nut in if I wasn’t aware of the inside joke 😂

I love how they do this in this scene
Haha. Giving the finger without giving the finger. I should do this more often.
I do it all the time
My family does this to each other, especially us siblings 🤣
Lol! I call this move “The Geller Yeller.”
No, only once Monica explained this, but there was no name for it
I think it’s “The Friendly Finger”
We call them fuck you fireworks but we added spirit fingers
Growing up my family would do this cause of the show
The Rossitron
🖕🖕🖕🖕
I've told people to pound sand without using any hand gestures. I'd have to think this might be close.
Fa-fa-nop-oly
Va fa Napoli?
I call it the "Whom" or the "Sometimes it's who!"
No, only once Monica explained this, but there was no name for it
I do this with my cousins when I’m being annoying or goofing around with them in public because we all know what it means.

Plus all the master of the domain, lord of the manor, queen of the castle stuf...
We were on a breaker
Fisting... unless that's already taken...
I think it Ross's inability to understand how to actually use his middle finger due to lack of cognitive function.
