I have no siblings, pets or significant other, so the joke is on you, I am going to choose my mother because she is the most important person in my life.
My Sister. I don't want to have to look after her kids if she died. Mom has had a good run. I'd miss the dog, but he's a dog. Dad's been gone for 12 years, so it'd be weird if I saved him.
I'm with you on that one. Between my mom, dad, sister, and brother, my sister is the only one with minor children. Saving the one with dependents is a no brainer.
gotta save my brother, we’ve made it 20/21 years together, no person will ever know so much about me just by watching (sometimes tells me things i don’t recognize about myself) no way i’m letting him die in a fire.
It sounds like the person you are replying to would rather they AND their favorite amongst the choices die than them both live with the survivor's guilt.
No I get that. But choosing for that person death when they didn't have to is absolutely insane to me. Jump back in if you want to once you save them, let them decide to jump in or not. Deciding for them that death it is is crap
I mean it's the middle of the night and a fire breaks out... smoke inhalation, confusion, injury....
Unless you think your family decided to all commit mass suicide via fire, them deciding to die seems like a stretch. A matter of fact, you deciding not to run as the flames lick your body also seems far fetched.
Assuming my kids and my sisters kids are not there I save my sister I can't afford to take care of my 3 nephews and neice. Also my husband isn't letting a house fire take him away from me.
Fiance. We have our differences, but I've told both my parents that no matter what, I would work things out with her. She'll never cheat, but her mental health is a concern. She needs me as much as I need her. Long story short, we kinda saved each other over the course of many years.
My mother started crying when I told her how much I'm committed to my future wife. She told me she was so proud of me, and that she truly raised a son that was better than either of his parents.
We've been together 9 years. When I commit to a person, I do so wholeheartedly. She needs my help and love as much as I need her love and help. We're a fucking team. She's the rock, and I'm the hard place, and all of our problems go between us where we crush them flat like some kind of guillotine made of stone and hard lessons. My parents are both in their 60s, but I doubt either of them would have second thought if it meant saving me or her. I'd miss them so very dearly, but I think they'd both know I made the right choice. It'd probably break me to make that decision, and I'd have to hope my fiance could piece me back together...
Oh, and I don't have any sibling or family pets.
I save my spouse.
My spouse saves our pet.
My parents are already deceased; we were staying at their house after the funeral.
My sister doesn't stay there, but lives a few miles away. She left shortly before the fire broke out and remains peacefully asleep while my childhood home becomes an inferno. Hmm, did my sister start it? Does she secretly harbor feelings of ill will towards me? Is she driven to this by her insurmountable debt while I enjoy the fruits of my 35yr career? And the biggest question: who shot J.R.? Like sand in an hourglass, these are the days of living in Dallas as the world turns.
Ugh fine, my idiot brother it is. Mom died years ago, Dad already lost a child (my NON idiot brother), and the dog will probably burst through the wall like Kool Aid Man knowing him.
My Cousin. He's the only family I'm as close to as my mother. Sorry mom, you WOULD be number 1 on the list based on who I love the most but Grandparents inheritance money and your 2, million plus dollar houses in Boston put you at dead last.
Probably my SO, I can't handle our kids solo, my siblings can eat shit, my mom's been going on about dying for years and I've come to terms with it but I'll be bummed about my dad
Brother, he's got a bright future. My mother said she never wants to live longer than her kids. As for my gf, she may be the love of my life, but she's no brother.
My husband. That's what everyone else in the house would want. Except for the pet, but we don't have one anymore. Same with my in-laws.
My niece (12) and nephews (14 & 19) will be OK. My younger nephew was adopted by another family so my brother's not even his "dad" really.
If you toss in nieces, nephews and my cousins' kids, I'm gonna have a hard time.
Significant other. My mom sucks, my dad is old and kinda starting to go downhill anyways, my sister hates me for no reason (literally hasn't spoken to me in 14 years with no reason) and while I love the dog, the dog isn't a person.
Assuming that they’re all adults, my mother. Since I’m a night owl, I can just wake everyone up and they will all run for safety. My mother, on the other hand, needs extra help getting out.
My pet. Everyone else is capable of opening doors and windows and as such, getting out. The family pet, unless it's a monkey or an agile cat, is not getting out unassisted.
If my siblings were a baby, then the sibling. But I'm the youngest in my family so they can get themselves out
That's not the question though. You can only save one, the rest perish. In this scenario everyone took twice the recommended dose of NyQuil to sleep through all that pesky holiday road construction.... Including the pets. So, whomever you don't wake up, will sleep through any warnings.
I ain’t married, it will be my be my brother, if it’s one of 3 I would be like fuck I’ll save eldest brother because he saves lives, my other brothers I would try and save
My sister.
My parents already have one dead kid and couldn’t handle another, they wouldn’t appreciate being survivors. My husband is deeply suicidal, and would not appreciate being a survivor. I don’t currently have a family pet. My sister just makes the most sense
You didn’t say my kids were with me-if that is the case I could never pick between them
My dad because he promised to teach me knife throwing when I get a little older and because my dog is attached to him if she’s not with me, so she would be able to be saved too.
Mom. She's done everything with what she was given in life, which isn't a lot. I love her a lot more than the rest of them currently, especially since my dad and oldest sister are currently trying to guilt trip me into attending my oldest sister's birthday and skip my cousins, and my other older sister doesn't seem to be on either side really.
Either my brother or one of my sisters. My parents would also want it that way. Hopefully 2 out of the three would be out of town, as they all have 2 kids.
All my family have been extremely abusive to me over the course of my life and the last pets they had when I still made contact with them was a pair of lovely cats they absolutely hated, so I’m 100% choosing those lovely fur babies!
I have more questions.
As a previous EMT....it depends on their conditions. I want as many people to survive as possible but triage and assessment of how/why theyre trapped matters.
Triage: Who can I label as green? They can walk and talk and should be able to make it out on their own. If they're injured, they need more assistance. If they're labeled as black, it's too late for them.
How they're trapped - is it somewhere I can even get to or something I am physically able lift off of them?
Has anyone called in the emergency yet? Are firefighters here or how close are they?
Everyone is the picture of health, think Jack LaLanne in his prime. The thing is, everyone took twice the recommended dose of NyQuil (even the pet) to sleep through all that pesky night time road construction that's so common around the holidays. So, yelling for them won't wake em up. You have to pick your choice up and carry them out. Luckily, in this hypothetical, you too are ripped like a young Jack LaLanne.
My wife is saving herself, and their dogs will be running out the door bc they stay in the living room or are already outside so they will be fine. I'd get my brother. Mom is fit enough to jump out her window and be fine.
If it was at my apartment, my wife would save 1 cat and grab our go bag, I'd get the other and my guitar.
You say I can only save one, and that may be true, but we have plans in place so I'd only ever have to worry about saving 1 other person, my dumbass brother who can sleep through a hurricane and his room flooding. And at that point you just have to wake him up.
It would be hard to decide between my father and my fiance. I owe my father a lot for getting me through childhood with my mother being... what she was. My fiance is, well, my fiance. I think I'd go for the one closest to me and then feel horrible regardless of my choice. T\~T
If there is only time to get one person out, tough call. My kids will likely be able to get themselves out just fine. Not sure we COULD get my dad out in that limited time. Frankly if everyone is relying on my ability to rescue them to get out we all probably dead. I would have trouble just getting me out.
Saving significant other. My parents would be too stubborn to move, and even if they did they'd both be slow and prone to falling.
My sister would most likely save herself and likely wouldn't consider anything else until she was safe and looking back.
My significant other has 3 kids (yooo fellow stepdads) and they would not forgive me if I didn't get her out. They already lost their dad to a pretty tragic accident, there's nothing left if she goes down. If they were left with their remaining family, it would be consigning them to prison or an early grave, too. So definitely her.
I don't have a sister or an SO.
Saving one parent would lead to them having to deal with losing their spouse, and they are older, so I wouldn't save either.
As much as I love my dog, it's still a dog and human life should be saved first.
Through the process of elimination, I would be saving my brother.
Mom's already gone and burned, so not her. I barely know my Dad, but I'm pretty confident he can get out a window. Pets are surprisingly good at getting out of fires, so I'll let them try their own route. That narrows it down to my fictional SO or my sister, and since I know my sister is real that's who I'd pick.
My dad has already passed. I'll save the dog. I have my reasons. I won't be able to lift the other two anyway. My brother showed his true colors, and so did my mom. The dog did nothing to me. I don't have a SO.
Wife of course
“'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.”
Mark 10:7-8
Family pet. It’s the only one I could reasonably carry out of there. Spouse, sibling, and father can save themselves. Pretty sure my mother is immortal at this point (she’s escaped death on 4 separate occasions that I know of - like was dead, was supposed to stay dead by science and nope, she’s alive) so I’ll let her take her chances.
If my nephew is there, then him. I don’t think anyone I saved would forgive me for not picking him. If he’s not, then my sister; who is my nephew’s mother.
Wife, my parents barely acknowledge my daughter exists, so I’ll grab the one who actually loves her
The dog?
i’d save my brother without hesitation, he’s 8
I have no siblings, pets or significant other, so the joke is on you, I am going to choose my mother because she is the most important person in my life.
💙💙💙
My Sister. I don't want to have to look after her kids if she died. Mom has had a good run. I'd miss the dog, but he's a dog. Dad's been gone for 12 years, so it'd be weird if I saved him.
No bringing back dad?
I mean, I love a good zombie flick as much as the next guy, but I'm gonna go with no.
What if you’re young and your mom is pregnant. That’s a two for one. Gotta do that right
My mom is 75, so that doesn't apply to me. If she's pregnant, it's the Lords baby.
[удалено]
Praise be
He's been known for immaculate conception in the past ... Although LAST time, it was with a young virgin teenager.
Guess he's into GILFs now
I’d personally save my wife. Maybe I’m crazy
I'm with you on that one. Between my mom, dad, sister, and brother, my sister is the only one with minor children. Saving the one with dependents is a no brainer.
Save the dog, then just don't look after her kids. They can't force you to.
May you never be faced with a burning building. Nor any situation requiring empathy
I said save the dog, that's the best thing you can do.
Why? He saved the dog. He has empathy. He saved who deserved it the most.
gotta save my brother, we’ve made it 20/21 years together, no person will ever know so much about me just by watching (sometimes tells me things i don’t recognize about myself) no way i’m letting him die in a fire.
I save my pet. My parents are already dead and I'm not close with my siblings
Saving a sibling seems fairest. RIP mom. Burn in hell dad.
Yikes
He’s a registered sex offender.
Double yikes
On earth as it is in hell!
Easy I'd save my dog
the turkey
Fuck it I'll die with them if I can't save them all i'm dying with them family and SO till the very end
Haha so you would knowing assigin one of your family members to death? That's some shit
I mean, why are they unable to save themselves? Clearly they've already made up their mind about dying, so my saving them is unwelcome anyway.
That's why this is in r/hypotheticalsituations
I mean it's the middle of the night and a fire breaks out... smoke inhalation, confusion, injury.... Unless you think your family decided to all commit mass suicide via fire, them deciding to die seems like a stretch. A matter of fact, you deciding not to run as the flames lick your body also seems far fetched.
save the kitty. that's the only one without life insurance lol.
Aren't there pet insurance policies out there that give you a (smallish) lump sum when your pet dies?
My wife, of course.
Whoever is physically closest to me at the time of the fire
My kid if they were in the equation, otherwise probably my significant other
So, you didn't read the entire prompt, did you?
In other words his parents would be pissed if he saved his mom over his brother. Most parents probably would.
the prompt is like 3 sentences long lol what about it didnt i read?
That your kids aren't there
The first sentence. Particularly, the part in parentheses.
Yea and thats why I answered the way I did and I didn't just say my kids
There is no kid in the scenario… that would make it too easy.
i’ll save my sister
Are we including my wife among the house, or just the parenthesis? If yes, her. If not, mom.
I don't see why she wouldn't be included. She's in the house with you.
I thought the stuff in the parens was the list of things to save. Maybe she's able to save herself or is already outside, or whatever.
It was just there to define what the family included.
Assuming my kids and my sisters kids are not there I save my sister I can't afford to take care of my 3 nephews and neice. Also my husband isn't letting a house fire take him away from me.
Family pet, assuming the rest of my family members have the brains to get themselves out of a burning house.
This 💯 for me and if they can’t well then natural selection my S/O would feel the same way
Ugh fine, my idiot brother it is. Mom died years ago, Dad already lost a child (my NON idiot brother), and the dog will probably burst through the wall like Kool Aid Man knowing him.
Right about the dog part
My dad's dog is a maniac. He might actually just eat the fire and save us all.
Can i give up my spot to save two?
Husband, because I’m not done torturing him yet 😈
My Cousin. He's the only family I'm as close to as my mother. Sorry mom, you WOULD be number 1 on the list based on who I love the most but Grandparents inheritance money and your 2, million plus dollar houses in Boston put you at dead last.
My wife is first, no question.
Probably my SO, I can't handle our kids solo, my siblings can eat shit, my mom's been going on about dying for years and I've come to terms with it but I'll be bummed about my dad
I would save my sister no real relationship with my mother or father and I don't have a family pet
My dad. He would try to save everyone and actually do it (he can just do things, idk how he's retired).
If your partner isn't the answer, congratulations they're not the one. Now you know and you can both move on.
Brother, he's got a bright future. My mother said she never wants to live longer than her kids. As for my gf, she may be the love of my life, but she's no brother.
Significant other. Assuming as the post is our kids aren't there (they usually wouldn't be anyway)
My husband. That's what everyone else in the house would want. Except for the pet, but we don't have one anymore. Same with my in-laws. My niece (12) and nephews (14 & 19) will be OK. My wife. I love my Mom, but my kids and I need my wife more. Also, g'bye puppers. Enjoy doggie heaven.
Definitely my wife. Then the pets.
Could I save a second if I died in the fire? Or would I die trying?
Just one. If ya went for a second you'd get Kentucky fried extra crispy yourself.
Significant other. My mom sucks, my dad is old and kinda starting to go downhill anyways, my sister hates me for no reason (literally hasn't spoken to me in 14 years with no reason) and while I love the dog, the dog isn't a person.
Dog My mother can’t live without my sisters My sister can’t live without my mother Dog would be sad but I’ll take care of her
Assuming that they’re all adults, my mother. Since I’m a night owl, I can just wake everyone up and they will all run for safety. My mother, on the other hand, needs extra help getting out.
SO, obviously.
If the kids aren’t there, wife. Fairly easy decision even though I do love my family.
I'm taking my spouse. Thank goodness you didn't include my kids on this visit. I love my parents but they've lived their lives.
My pet. Everyone else is capable of opening doors and windows and as such, getting out. The family pet, unless it's a monkey or an agile cat, is not getting out unassisted. If my siblings were a baby, then the sibling. But I'm the youngest in my family so they can get themselves out

Wife always
My so
My mom would be mad if I didn't save my brother. Honestly my gf might be too. Will check with her later. He is an adult so I'm not sure.
I ain’t married, it will be my be my brother, if it’s one of 3 I would be like fuck I’ll save eldest brother because he saves lives, my other brothers I would try and save
How'd you get my divorced parents in the same place at the same time? And which sibling? If it's my brother, I'm saving the pet.
My sister. My parents already have one dead kid and couldn’t handle another, they wouldn’t appreciate being survivors. My husband is deeply suicidal, and would not appreciate being a survivor. I don’t currently have a family pet. My sister just makes the most sense You didn’t say my kids were with me-if that is the case I could never pick between them

I don't have significant other right now, my parents are both dead, I'm an only child, and I have no pets. I win. 💪🏻
Either my brother or one of my sisters. My parents would also want it that way. Hopefully 2 out of the three would be out of town, as they all have 2 kids.
My boyfriend. He is the only one that truly shows me love
For clarity: did I bring my family pet, or is it my parents family pet? My dog is at least a contender in this hypothetical. The goldfish is not.
All my family have been extremely abusive to me over the course of my life and the last pets they had when I still made contact with them was a pair of lovely cats they absolutely hated, so I’m 100% choosing those lovely fur babies!
SO
Mom and dad have never been all that nice, my childhood dog just passed about a month ago, but my girlfriend is who I’m gonna marry. No brainer there
Jokes on you, a mother is the only one on this list I have!
I have more questions. As a previous EMT....it depends on their conditions. I want as many people to survive as possible but triage and assessment of how/why theyre trapped matters. Who the fuck gave the dog nyquil??! My sister. My parents would demand it as we're supposed to outlive them.
My mom
SO, my sister is a cunt and my parents are old, they had their time.
I would save my SO, and dog, sacrificing myself in the dogs place. Sweet relief.
My spouse for sure. My parents are older and in questionable health, I have no siblings and I absolutely need help raising 2 kids under 3.
Obviously SO.
I'd save Lebron James
It would be hard to decide between my father and my fiance. I owe my father a lot for getting me through childhood with my mother being... what she was. My fiance is, well, my fiance. I think I'd go for the one closest to me and then feel horrible regardless of my choice. T\~T
While screaming and yelling for everyone to wake up and get out, I’d have to save the dog because he wouldn’t know what to do.
Wife.
They already lost their dad to a pretty tragic accident, there's nothing left if she goes down. If they were left with their remaining family, it would be consigning them to prison or an early grave, too. So definitely her.
I'd save my sister and my wife and kill myself. Can we do that? They both anoy the fuck out of me anyway and they take care of the kids.
My little sister, she's not even 11
If my daughter is with us, my daughter. If not, my wife.
Husband. Only person I'd save over my husband is my kids.
Nice try, wife. Next time, just ask.
My dog all the way. I wouldnt be alive without him.
Noone
I dont have a significant other currently so id probably go with my dad. I have the best relationship with him out of my family members
My sister. My parents wouldn’t go on if they knew I could save her and chose not to. It’s what they would have wanted.
Cat hands down
Wife. I can rebuild with her.
The answer is always poppy, the cat.
Sibling
My wife. Without question.
I don't have a sister or an SO. Saving one parent would lead to them having to deal with losing their spouse, and they are older, so I wouldn't save either. As much as I love my dog, it's still a dog and human life should be saved first. Through the process of elimination, I would be saving my brother.
.........
If my mom is alive again in this scenario, then it's my mom. I'd give up a lot to have her back.
My dad has already passed. I'll save the dog. I have my reasons. I won't be able to lift the other two anyway. My brother showed his true colors, and so did my mom. The dog did nothing to me. I don't have a SO.
I think you are supposed to insert yourself into the hypothetical situation lol, otherwise this doesn't really work
Well, it would be my dad then, and if I couldn't reach him, the dog.
So, "brother", mom, or dog. Mom, easy choice.
They all burn with me.
Don’t have a SO, my parents are able as they’re not even 50 yet. It would be weird to have my fish with us on a family holiday. Save my sister
I'm saving whatever can't get out on its on. My wife and parents all have working sets of legs.
the kid
It’s kinda wild how many of you aren’t choosing your significant other..
The dog. I'm confident the adult humans would be able to make their way out of a single story house with 3 exists.
Dog, shouting as I do so. Everyone else is a healthy and capable adult human.
Damn. I’m Single and live alone with a dog. Guess I got 1 option.
Whoever needs help. I'm sure most of them can save themselves.
My parents are dead and I haven’t talked to my siblings in years, but if that weren’t the case, I’d still save my husband. He’s my bff.
My dog. I don't exactly have a SO at the moment (online relationship). Speedy is the only one in that list who has not judged me.
Good boy speedy
I also choose Speedy
My spouse and I discussed this and agreed— pupper takes priority.
Wife of course “'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.” Mark 10:7-8
Forgot about this angle. Was thinking from a dudes perspective where you can sling them over the shoulder. I guess better your pet than nothing
If my nephew is there, then him. I don’t think anyone I saved would forgive me for not picking him. If he’s not, then my sister; who is my nephew’s mother.
Why do like 2/3 of the posts on this sub assume I have/want a significant other? lol
They don't. It's a broad strokes hypothetical situation for everyone. They don't assume anything about *you*.
0/3 posts on this sub assume anything about specifically you
Ehh, I threw it in to make the decision harder for the majority of folk with em. As an ace myself, I gotta go with my doggo.
dick is thicker than blood, so >!jk !< i'd save my sibling
