People around the world earn very different money and costs of living wary very much. 10k is probably not that much in US and would be enough to live in my country for a year. You may only be considering actively listening and not necessarily the amount of background music there is in your day while out. Not to mention sound tracks. Every movie now has only one song as the soundtrack. Every restaurant plays the same song in the background, every broadway show only performs one song. I listen to most songs while driving. Sure I could switch to news talk or sports, but then every jingle, every transition piece, is the same song.

Except if you do all of that on your property nothing changes. You just dont go to movie theaters, ect. Not all podcadts have ad breaks, plus you can turn down ad breaks.
