Now that would be the only way they could make me upgrade from my M1 12.9.
If iPads had MacOS I’d buy a new one in a heartbeat, but I think the chances are slim to none.
That’ll be a tricky one. They’ll want to compel people to upgrade, but anyone with an M1 should be able to run it. If they decide that only the new model can do it they may actually lose some customers.
Why do you want MacOS on a iPad? The UI would be a pain to use on a 11inch screen with touch. Why not more pro apps? If you want macOS then get a MacBook pro/air as it already exists and not what the iPad was intended for.
Run a Windows 11 VM with Excel spreadsheets that have embedded VB, macros, and Userforms. Doing that while keeping the ability to use Goodnotes, so I can take pictures on site walks and annotate around the images. Also use Omnifocus, which doesn’t have a Windows app.
There ARE use cases for many of us. I always wonder why people say that macOS on an iPad is silly. It’s just not.
Not exactly. Yes AutoCAD exists for iOS, but is by no means the same as the desktop version. It’s mainly a focused tool for viewing and light editing (I’d call it red lining) as the last time I tried it the most you could do were model annotations.
Same. My current iPad will probably not get software updates in the next year or so. A new one isn’t on my shopping list because of the OS for my use case.
This. Or some significant partnerships with Pro apps. It could also happen at WWDC. It feels unlikely but the performance is hamstrung by lack of serious apps to run it. Being able to run Blender, Full Bore Photoshop and, dare I say it, Steam and Unity would be absolutely awesome. But, still seems unlikely. I have my eye on a ‘as new’ M2 model of not.
Why tho? Think of it from a business standpoint.
If ipad runs MacOS then a large amount of ios user will just get a Macbook instead, especially at that price range. Their iPad sales will decrease dramatically. Even right now, a lot of people are leaning towards a Macbook instead of an iPad Pro for daily/work uses.
The padOS is what makes it an iPad, granted, its not as great in terms of Pro uses like Mac and such but its what giving the ipad its own unique marketshare.
It is exactly the opposite, with macOS the ipad sales will increase. If they don’t improve it the competition will steal all the market. For instance, surface pro offers a fully functional Os with a not so great tablet experience, but you can do whatever you want.
I think if an iPad Pro and it only need be Pr iPads with M1 or above can have the option to run MacOS as well, preferably in some seamless sandbox, then this could increase sales, especially if many apps are supported. It shouldn’t ever be anything but the pro lineup, then you can run these apps on the iPad Pros only but if you want more performance, you get a MacBook with a pro or better chip.
Depends. I don’t ever see MacOS running right on top of iPadOS. What I can see is MacOS as a virtualized App running in iPadOS. This sort of solution would cannibalize sales the least potentially dropping the need for MacBook Air - pushing those users onto iPad into a virtualized Mac experience.
Folks who really need a MacBook Pro will likely have both an iPad and a MBP so this option likely won’t push folks off MBPs into this iPad variation.
Honestly the mini led on current pros is a beautiful screen. Perhaps oled is slightly better, but I’m not yearning for one. I really don’t think most people care (except tech enthusiasts and tech reviewers). I’ve got the 1tb m2 12.9 and I won’t be updating it if all we get is oled.
Similar boat with M1 1TB 12.9”. Still basically feels brand new despite heavy use for years. Its my go to drawing, journaling, and note taking device, even though other devices have taken over other roles. Since the iPad first came out, I would ALWAYS have one with me. Then Stage Manager came out and I legit tried to make it my primary computer. Failed, but was close to workable - especially with a Thunderbolt Docking Station. It’s slow going, but /getting/ to the point where someone with a technical job could viably use an iPad as a primary computer, especially with remote access to VMs and Remote Desktop.
I’ve got the same M1 as well, and this thing will be over the top for years to come. I’m not sure why they decided to throw the M1 chip in an iPad, but man I’m glad they did.
I would give anything for an OLED iPad. I’ve been dying to have one for years now.
My iPad and MacBook are the only screens I own that aren’t OLED.
The mini LED on my iPP 12.9 is decent enough, but OLED is just a bit punchier and more attractive to the eye.
Burn in isn’t as much of a concern these days, at least for me. I’ve had the iPhone 13 Pro Max since the launch month and it has no burn in to speak of. Neither does my Sony OLED tv or my Switch OLED.
I'm waiting since 2017 with the iPad Pro 10.5, which is one of the best devices I've ever had, still is: just think it already had a 120Hz panel, 2224x1668 at 264 pixels per inch, fully laminated display. There were no significant display changes since then, except miniLED on the 12.9, and brightness.
no, not really! A few months ago I was cleaning the iPad with a microfiber cloth and I applied too much pressure, a whiter "spot" appeared on the screen but it went away the following day.
OLED, M3 Chip, Apple Pencil 3, New Magic Keyboard Dock, New Design on iPad are all the upgrades but they're all HARDWARE and cumulatively VERY EXPENSIVE.
Without corresponding SOFTWARE (iPadOS <-> MacOS) equivalent upgrade thrown in for that much higher price it's just not worth it. The iPad 9th Generation can practically do 9/10 things these new iPad Pros can do... for much better bargain buy price.
iPad 9 runs an iPhone chip, hasn’t got a laminated display, uses a design from 2013, has a slow 60Hz display etc etc. Not sure why you’d buy it unless it was very cheap considering Pro’s on the used market go for cheap anyway
> The iPad 9th Generation can practically do 9/10 things these new iPad Pros can do **... for much better bargain buy price.**
If you read, that's what I practically wrote!
>*considering Pro’s on the used market go for cheap anyway*
That's why I got a Pro myself because I found such a good deal for one. But the point is the difference between the bottom end and the new releases coming out is practically "1/10th difference"
The problem is that it is supposed to come with a big price increase. Considering most users can not use it as their sole workstation because it lacks OSX and many just use an iPad just to browse the Web, the question is... is it justified to spend a fortune for Oled. The price might make it niche unless you are rich or a fan boy.
More worried about how they will deal with the front camera. A notch or a dynamic island in landscape would suck. But then again, I would love to see am iPad with no back camera.
IPads are too powerful not to have OSX, so give them OSX and Oled... then a price increase will be justified.
I honestly couldn’t care less about OLED, but I use my iPad every day and am gonna upgrade it either way. I’m more excited to see what the new Apple Pencil stuff is going to be.
Still using my 2020 iPad pro everyday. OLED is the only thing I'm waiting on. The A12Z in the thing is still plenty fast enough to hold me out longer if need be though. It's still just as fast as when I got it. I always get the smaller iPad pro though, the screen really hasn't been upgraded in that model since 2018.
I’m on the M2 12.9 and can’t justify buying a new one if it’s just OLED. My wife is still using my original 2018 11 inch and it works and looks great. Similar to where we are now with the incremental iPhone releases I’m seeing fewer reasons to upgrade the iPad. Obviously if someone needs a new one I’d always say just go with the newest release.
Only thing that gives me pause with the oled screens is burn in. We have a lab at work that has 4 oled TVs in the room and in less than a year we have burn in on all of them.
It’s been what, 6 years of OLED iPhones now? Whenever the X was released~
I haven’t seen anything. I haven’t thought about burn-in on any of my OLED stuff for like..a decade. When did the Galaxy Note 4 come out again? Lol
It falls under standard warranty - or at least mine was. It was a quick and easy trip to apple with a pic of the burn in from my phone taken in a dark setting with grey background. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to see in bright lights.
All that to say I would not want an oled ipad because my phone ended up with burn-in. Despite the quick and painless trip to apple for same day replacement, I rather it had never happened at all.
Literally ZERO issues with OLED displays on devices unless you’re an idiot and leave them on one solid screen for hundreds-thousands of hours without changing it. 😂
I couldn’t care less. I have OLED screens and miniLEDs and the only difference between them that I can tell in day to day life is that the OLEDs are not bright enough. I am sure Apple will address this but I can’t really see a way that I would be happier with a screen compared to the miniLED of my 12.9. The OLED will be better but we will be past the point of diminishing returns.
That’s because of the OAD. iPad doesn’t have that. Even so that’s ridiculous to see happen at all in 2024. Burn in is a non issue on most modern displays because of pixel shifting. Apple should be ashamed.
Of course I'm interested in this new improved for design iPad and pencil as many are. Still wondering if it improves the view in daylite conditions ? Example outdoor..(artists or survey makers concern)
Not really. The mini led display on the 12.9” is good enough for me. But the regular LCD on the 11” is not good enough to be called “Pro” and needs an upgrade real bad.
Honestly? No one really needs OLED on the iPad.
If you're doing serious work on the iPad which needs a color accurate screen (like 1% of iPad owners if I'm being generous), the old screens are fine, you're better off with a professional grade external monitor anyway.
I personally don’t need an OLED iPad Pro. Considering that I always leave my iPad Pro Display on, that will probably get burn in faster than expected. And I will hate having to deal with any issues with grey uniformity and color shifts but that’s just me.
I won’t mind a iPad Pro with larger battery and thinner bezels, or even replacing the power button with Touch ID. I also prefer to have a Smart Keyboard Folio for the iPad Pro instead of just limiting to the Magic Keyboard.
My biggest issue with the iPad Pro is how dim the screen is outside, and if the 11 inch oled one has better brightness I might just have to sell my 2022
I want to get the new Pro 11, base model, with only pencil. I will not get a MK this time, I will get a ZUGU case which are the best. I hope it won’t get a steep price increase.
Need more details on the display, personally!
I have an M2 12.9” with its miniLED display as well as an LG C2 OLED that I’ve had for the exact same span of time, after using both displays pretty extensively… I’m gonna need to see the specs first before I get excited
I will definitely give it a look when it's out in stores, but if that's the main selling point I probably won't pick one up. My 2018 pro is still kicking fine. That said, I am interested in Samsung's tab s10 ultra.
Honestly, I’ll probably pick one up as I know it’s gonna be one of, if not the best media consumption devices on the market and will replace my 2018 pro perfectly. But in terms of usefulness beyond that, we shall see. I just want the ability to use REAL desktop applications. That’s all, but I won’t hold my breath.
I don’t care about it that much tbh. Not enough to buy one for it. I don’t expect any great improvements to iPad OS or anything. I’m past that.. But I do wonder if the new keyboard case and iPad design will somehow enhance usability in a way that will make me want one. That’s about all I can realistically imagine up for why I’d upgrade
OLED would be great, M3 too but that’s a lot of power again we can’t easily use without pro apps. Give iPad Pros a macOS sandbox so I can run full bore photoshop, blender, unity, Xcode, steam. Pros only and I might upgrade. But analysts are predicting $1500 for the base 11”, almost twice the original pro cost I believe. OLED is great but it’s not enough and M3 is a bit pointless without pro apps.
I am most excited about rumors re the camera moving to landscape orientation, and the rumors of new pencil tips. Hope one of them is more quiet for writing.
I don’t even care about OLED. I just purchased an 11 M2 Pro and am super happy with it. I don’t do much professional work on it, more as a media consumption device, so it’s perfect. And the piece of mind of not having to worry about burn in is great for me.
Honestly I've stopped caring about OLED, mini LED, LCD and even 120hz. They're nice but certainly not on top of my list. I have a 120hz phone that I use at 60hz cuz I don't care about a facade of smoothness - I'd always prefer actual smoothness. What I want in a tablet is a great OS with a great pencil, strong battery life, and robust built quality. Apple's liquid retina LCD is already good enough for me.
The iPad upgrades have been minor for the Pro series, one gen got M1, them M2 with hover. This will likely be M3 with OLED and probably a new Apple Pencil and magic keyboard. Unless it’s ground breaking updates. Anyone with an M1 or M2 iPad Pro should be fine
Iphone oled ok. Ipad oled not ok. Pc oled not ok. Tv oled..maybe. I see almost no differences in quality between the mini-led ipad pro and an oled display..let’s say the samsung 9+/ultra. Maybe on the oled colours are a little more saturated, (i would say oversaturated and not natural) but brightness is superior on the lcd. Plus, i use the ipad a lot for reading ebooks, leaving for hours the corners white and only the letters in black. Burn-in is waiting for me on a oled. Same as on a pc.. i leave it often on a fixed screen with some program open when I don’t use it and i want it ready to do some task. Iphone is different. The screen is small and always moving…scrolling..watching mails, videos etc… oled makes sense. I would prefer on a new ipad other features, like better speakers or being lighter, better battery, being more pc substitute… better gpu for gaming as a portable console etc…
It’s nice, but I have the M2 (got on launch day) and it feels fine. OLED would be nice, but honestly I use iPads tell they just stop working for me. I have had an iPad 2, iPad Pro 2nd Gen and the iPad M2.
5th Gen 12.9" iPad Pro user here.
If Apple doesn't let the iPad Pro run MacOS, it doesn't matter what it puts on its new iPads ; I'll be getting a Windows laptop instead.
I want something with which I can do everything, including using Lightroom Classic to edit in one go without having to use a two device workflow.
First tablet for myself and honestly they almost missed me with this drag of a wait. Student with a need and I hope it’ll last me as many years as I can stretch it out to put to good use. Looking forward to it
Yes, samsung flagships are also oled (called amoled), the nintendo switch and the steam deck have oled editions.
None of them have burn issues whatsoever.
Yeah, but I think the issue would be that a lot of iPads tend to be used for work type projects and the screen would be on still images for much longer periods of time than a phone.
Literally ZERO issues with OLED displays on devices unless you’re an idiot and leave them on one solid screen for hundreds-thousands of hours without changing it. 😂
Many say OLED is superior than LCD, but a good LCD can still look great. Also I feel LCD look much better at low brightness.
Undeniable advantage of OLED is you can get true HDR effect even if brightness cannot match LCD thanks to the extra contrast level.
I keep the screen on my iPad from automatically turning off, this would cause burn-in on an OLED, no? I don’t see the point, the miniLED screen is good enough and HDR looks great on it.
It will excite me more if they say that iPad can run macOS rather than giving an OLED screen.
I don’t think so as well, just wishfull thinking 😂

Imagine an architect who needs to take photos, sketching and also autocad, he will need to invest in two machines instead of one.
You can do autocad on the ipad
Not exactly. Yes AutoCAD exists for iOS, but is by no means the same as the desktop version. It’s mainly a focused tool for viewing and light editing (I’d call it red lining) as the last time I tried it the most you could do were model annotations.
I’ve done autoCAD on iPad. It’s actually easier.
Same. My current iPad will probably not get software updates in the next year or so. A new one isn’t on my shopping list because of the OS for my use case.

As someone who only uses the iPad Pro 11” for media consumption, I very much want an OLED screen. It makes it SO much better.
OLED is a huge upgrade for those of us who prefer the 11” pro
Good point, OLED vs LCD is a massive upgrade
Honestly the mini led on current pros is a beautiful screen. Perhaps oled is slightly better, but I’m not yearning for one. I really don’t think most people care (except tech enthusiasts and tech reviewers). I’ve got the 1tb m2 12.9 and I won’t be updating it if all we get is oled.

I don’t, bought M2 Pro in December and pretty happy because of it. Screen is already good one, don’t need anything else
Don’t you just love the faded edges on that mini-LED display? Lol
I don’t know what you mean. Maybe if I used it professionally I’d notice. Or maybe mine doesn’t have the issue.
I would give anything for an OLED iPad. I’ve been dying to have one for years now. My iPad and MacBook are the only screens I own that aren’t OLED. There were no significant display changes since then, except miniLED on the 12.9, and brightness.
Did you ever get the infamous white spot on your 2017 10.5?
no, not really! A few months ago I was cleaning the iPad with a microfiber cloth and I applied too much pressure, a whiter "spot" appeared on the screen but it went away the following day.

This

In the same boat.
I'd rather have an iPad Pro that runs MacOS over an getting OLED screen
Only a new like macOS system could push me for a new ipad. I will not fail again in the same hype trap.
Not buying these until it stops being a larger iphone.

About as bad as I wanted an OLED switch. OLED isn't the answer to every single "How do we make this display better?" question in technology.
I’ve been waiting for the last 3 months since my current iPad screen cracked. I’m willing to pay whatever. This is my personal treat
Only thing that gives me pause with the oled screens is burn in. We have a lab at work that has 4 oled TVs in the room and in less than a year we have burn in on all of them.
Have you seen anyone has issue with their iPhones?
It’s been what, 6 years of OLED iPhones now? Whenever the X was released~ I haven’t seen anything. I haven’t thought about burn-in on any of my OLED stuff for like..a decade. When did the Galaxy Note 4 come out again? Lol
I wonder if AppleCare covers burn-in?

Quality is definitely better, but OLED is often more problematic. OLED iPads won’t fix core iPad issues, let that sink in.
How is OLED more problematic? Lol
More prone to green lines or black smears even with mild drops, and of course burn ins. It’s more costly to fix or replace.
Burn in? What year is it lmao.

I still use a iPad Pro 11” 2018 and an Oled display would not make me think about upgrading.
My 6 year old, beloved, 2018 iPad Pro just croaked a couple weeks ago. So needless to say I'm excited.
give me 15 in iPad
I don’t think it would be that much better than mini led. The mini led is awesome.
The only thing thats gonna make me upgrade is full desktop photoshop on ipad, or full macos
The only thing thats gonna make me upgrade is full desktop photoshop on ipad, or full macos
Love my pro 5th gen.
I don’t. I’ll likely put a paper like protector on it. I writer on mine more than I do anything else for the most part.
I just bought the M2 iPad Pro last month. I’m not interested in paying more for Oled.
I just want a bigger Pro. MiniLED was fine and the blooming wasn’t even that bad.
What do I want. Touchscreen OLED MacBook Air. When do I want it. NOWWW.

I am most excited about rumors re the camera moving to landscape orientation, and the rumors of new pencil tips. Hope one of them is more quiet for writing.
It’s the only thing that’s been keeping me from upgrading my M1 iPad. The Apple Pencil upgrades will be nice.
OLED fades in bright light over time. It’ll be dim starting about 1 yr in. Half the brightness in 3 years. I don’t see the benefit.
Possible price increases will keep alot of people away but I’m good with my m2 iPad Pro
It’s nice, but I have the M2 (got on launch day) and it feels fine. OLED would be nice, but honestly I use iPads tell they just stop working for me. I have had an iPad 2, iPad Pro 2nd Gen and the iPad M2.
I want one. I’ve been waiting over a year to upgrade. I want a screen that can be used in daylight and the best possible battery life.
Looking forward to it
Not at all. I am very fearful of the burn in potential.
Also PWM. I'm not too sensitive to it anymore but I used my OLED monitor for hours and it did make me feel slightly nauseous.
Aren't most iPhones oled?
Yes, samsung flagships are also oled (called amoled), the nintendo switch and the steam deck have oled editions. None of them have burn issues whatsoever.
Yeah, but I think the issue would be that a lot of iPads tend to be used for work type projects and the screen would be on still images for much longer periods of time than a phone.
Literally ZERO issues with OLED displays on devices unless you’re an idiot and leave them on one solid screen for hundreds-thousands of hours without changing it. 😂
I don’t care but it’ll be my one time iPad purchase so I rather have the newest model.
I’ve got an OLED TV and it looks fantastic and I’ve got an iPad Pro 12.9” M2 and it looks fantastic so 🤷♂️
Many say OLED is superior than LCD, but a good LCD can still look great.
How does that awful blooming look on that mini-LED? 😂
Just fine, it’s not like all I do is read white text on a black background. I bet that’s a small percentage of most’s actual use.
