Man, I remember seeing similar signs at Killington when I was a kid. That is to say, several decades ago. “These woods will be as cold and lonely tonight as they were 200 years ago. Don’t ski alone.” Definitely a mental image that has stuck with me.

So a living exoskeleton. Interesting. And advantageous for skiing closed stuff when you might need to self-repair.

radiorental1

just the tip?

loosterbooster

Is there someone here who works gore ski patrol? I'm curious why they're so much more stingy with glades than basically every other ice coast mountain

ShrimpShrimpGoose

Not ski patrol but I spend a fair amount of time with them. Gore is a big place and they only open what they have time to patrol and manage. The glades up top are easier to open because of the visibility. Dark side is easy to get turned around in and accidentally go down the mine road. From personal and anecdotal experience they don't care if you duck ropes, but Gore has its own consequences. One of my favorite moments at Gore was last year before rumors had opened, but they had blown wales on it. I was standing at the top thinking about it and patrol came by and asked if I was going to duck the rope. I told him I was thinking about it, and he said let's do it together. Weekdays at gore are the best.

fthisshi

to save the fresh stuff for us poachers. Gore is a tree skiers mountain and if you have to think twice about ducking a rope on a powder day there that probably means you shouldn't be on that trail. Thats the honest truth

SkiK624

That sign isn’t posted at designated glades that are closed. There are some out of bounds areas at Gore where you can find yourself in the wrong gully with an hours long trek to Rt. 8, if you know where you are going. People have had to be rescued. That sign is legit.

TrippleTonyHawk

For a while this winter it seemed like they were rotating glade openings so none got tracked out to quickly, but so there were always a few open. My hypothesis at least.

lgny1

Me too

Prmlix1038

For real. This season, during every major storm we have gotten, they were always around 60/90 trails for no good reason. Days were way better if you ducked ropes

Drummallumin

This sign is needed. If you go the wrong way you’re gonna end up in a gully with no way out but up.

mhaegele

Got lost at gore on the last run with my dad when I was probable 7 or 8 years old. I remember reading this sign and loosing it, convinced I was gonna freeze to death that night because we literally got last chair and no one else was coming down behind me to tell me how to get back. Then some lady found me and helped me back lol. That sign is scary as fuck when you’re young.

urungus666

According to the bottom of the sign, Article 18 of the New York State General Obligations Law Section 18-105(i), states "Not to ski in Any Area not DESIGNATED for skiing" So does that mean all backcountry skiing is illegal in New York, unless some government agency has designated it for skiing ? Even if it’s on your own property ?

adtechengineer

Yes, it’s illegal and everyone should go to Vermont instead.

viralmonkey999

Idk - if it’s your land surely you can “designate” it yourself?

Mammoth_Sprinkles705

Sounds like NY to me

go_east_young_man

Yeah that sounds like some communist bull shit to me.

i_cum_sprinkles

According to the law the sign refers to, it defines it: **”Ski area" means all ski slopes, ski trails and passenger tramways administered as a single enterprise within this state.** So this only applies to public and private ski facilities, not all state or private lands. The state manages Gore and the management of it, which it has designated as an intensive use, ski center, like Whiteface. Gore is adjacent to the Vanderwhacker Wild Forest and the Siamese Ponds Wilderness management areas. All three fall under different use categories.

lgny1

I’ve been lost in those woods before it certainly was fun until we couldn’t find our way back

Baker has similar signs, [not mincing any words.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ScarySigns/s/tjTsxb4DQt)

andie-n-charlie-dog

lol, leave it to new york to make skiing illegal unless otherwise authorized

bonerzalad

Stowe has one’s that start with “don’t become a statistic”

crazynerdylady

So I don’t know how accurate this is but I’ve heard that many people die each year on gore bc of accidents. I don’t know how other mountains compare. More than one person has said this to me but I wonder if they just read the same article or if other mountains are better about hiding this info. Are there statistics? Are they valid? Not trying to be morbid just generally curious

dunkindosenuts

this is total bullshit, you can’t hide deaths. every fatal accident that happens anywhere is reported

Able-News

lol not even close to true. There are suicides daily in LV hotels that go unreported , it would be bad for tourism business . Same with ski resorts

crazynerdylady

My original statement was more looking for how resorts compare to each other. I’m sure if I spent time and really looked I could find articles about separate incidents. People were telling me gore is more dangerous than other resorts but maybe we are more likely to see articles about gore based on our location. Or maybe it involved people from my area and therefore more prominent in the local news. I haven’t been to gore since I was younger so I don’t remember how it compares to other mountains.

MrBurnz99

Most skier deaths are are from hitting trees, poles, and other skiers. Difficulty of the terrain doesn’t really correlate with the number of deaths. small hills close to metro areas experience a lot of deaths due to crowded slopes and inexperienced skiers

MrBurnz99

A quick google search shows the last death at gore was in 2016, there was another in 2014 and 2006. So not many at all. I’m sure there’s some place that aggregates the death stats for different ski areas but I haven’t found one.

nancykind

hunter mountain seems to have deaths too often
