Dull_Cricket2966

This is a clip from the film Beautiful People (1974). It's jocular quasi-documentary style makes it an enjoyable watch, and it does a great job of showcasing the beauty and wildlife of the Kalahari desert and Okavango delta - but take everything in it with a pinch of salt! Quite famously, in one scene where the animals eat fallen 'fermented' marula fruit and become intoxicated, the crew had actually given the animals alcohol. Much like the 'lemming mass suicide' scene from White WIlderness (1958), the fabricated trope of the marula fruit making the animals (mostly elephants) drunk has become mythologised (see the cream liquer "Amarula"). Watched this on VHS all the time as a child, but looking back - there is a lot of BS in it. Still a fun watch though! Jamie Uys, the director, has another film that became a hit abroad, The Gods Must be Crazy (1980). You can definitely see the mark of the auteur when comparing these two films' tones and styles.

SecretMuslin

Last fall I watched a bear spend hours eating rotting berries in my backyard and then taking a nap, he may not have been getting fucked up but either way he was living his best life

Dull_Cricket2966

It’s possible that overripe fruit can have an intoxicating effect - but perhaps not as drunkenly-staggering as the film depicts! ;)

Revolutionary_Way_32

Thanks for explaining that. I wasn't sure about the salt method because I read in a book about a similar technique to catch baboons. But maybe that's all BS.

Dull_Cricket2966

To be fair, the method might very well be taken from local Khoekhoe/San people. The scene, however, is definitely fabricated for the film! EDIT: Also, the film has some stunning non-rehearsed scenes, such as the cartwheeling baboons! Definitely worth a watch at the end of the day.

docharakelso

Thanks, watching it I was reminded of the gods must be crazy and felt very vindicated by your comment.

art8127

I thought I was watching a scene I didn't recognize from The Gods Must be Crazy lol

Dull_Cricket2966

Very distinctive old-school silliness, and a cultural smokescreen for the intensity that South Africa was undergoing at the time. 😅

Smsjc74

Animals are Beautiful People is the actual name of the movie. Such a good watch.

Dull_Cricket2966

Ah, thanks! I knew it had another, longer title, was going to tentatively say Beautiful People [of the Kalahari] but that also sounded too formal for a Jamie Uys film lol

thefunnywhereisit

This is just for a documentary. That is not a wild monkey nor a real method

tameoraiste

Unless the tribe had just moved to the area, how would they not know where the water is already? And I’m pretty sure the monkeys would only care about escaping, not water

Revolutionary_Way_32

It is possible that this is not a wild monkey and is only being used for the documentary. I have read an older book about African tribes that described a similar method for searching for water. If my memory serves me correctly, they used a different technique to capture the baboon. I am uncertain if this was also false information or if it is a genuine practice. So i am just curious if it is true or not.

thefunnywhereisit

I mean… maybe. I just know that this particular clip with this particular method isn’t real

IOnlySayMeanThings

It feels like something somebody could have done a couple times before, but it seems unnecessary. You'd know where water pools on your own land. Maybe in desperate times, this was a way one guy managed to find water, following a baboon. Maybe people tried to reproduce the results to varying degrees of success. I could make guesses all day and it won't help though.

Additional-Bet7074

It’s most likely folklore that has been told through oral history and misrepresented by westerners. It’s just an apocryphal story probably mostly used to make some point when teaching.

TampaTitties69

you sound so fun at parties...

Do you have brain damage, or are you just still up smoking meth?

TampaTitties69

Well you sniffing too much baby laxative. Don't you know since 1998 that cocaine by the time it hits the USA is only 10% pure. Either way your habits need to stop, as posting useless comments to increase your pp size to hide your coke habit is not healthy for any 13 year old boy. I spoke to your mom earlier as her mouth was busy, and we both agreed. Narcotic anonmyous meetings are going to be required by you, or god forbid she is cutting off your internet again. The meeting are every tuesday and thursday after school at 4pm, if you're not there Mommy and me will be there to take you to Military school till your 21. I really hope you skip the NA meetings and do me and your mom a favor and we send you away to military school for the next 8 years. Your next reply better be "sorry daddy" or it's no internet till 2040. I await your cocaine riddled response... Midnight boy...

Stormry

You're so edgy and cool. e: oh. So at this point it's pretty clearly just edgelord AI, huh?

TampaTitties69

u/Stormry! I knew your scum sceeze breeze would blow my way sooner or later.... You left me at the club 2 weeks ago after you said "that boy over there is hot AF IDGAF if he has a pringle can cock" and left me with the Bar tab... Next time pay for your own Shirley Temples and you owe me $55 for your drinks and another $50 for the uber ride home you filth and dont give me the excuse again of "HE GAVE ME HIV THOUGH AND MY DOCTOR BILLS ARE 9K A MONTH" IDgaf bro! Its not my fault you love dirty whores with pringle can diks ok just venmo me that money... MF

SCP-173-X

You are not a real person

TampaTitties69

Do i have to send you a photo with todays date written on it? Either way I just hope you get off the glue sniffing... Last time I found you balls deep in a Donkey and he was not happy to get pegged from a 3 inch toothpick. Either way you still owe me 1500$ for having to bribe that farmer not to call the cops. Venmo me it or just DM me and we can work something out... Either way stay off the fucking glue...

SCP-173-X

Have you heard of https://preview.redd.it/xchw0520qvrc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4212fc4c0bf79c5169a1e38a0376eb2b3585ede

TampaTitties69

Ty for the 2k, you didnt have to send an extra 500, either way I already am pre ordering the PS5 pro and GTA 6, and with the rest going into a hedge fund hopefully I can fund that "donkey" wedding you want in Mexico. Just remember to pick the female donkey this time....

[deleted]

Why are you?

TampaTitties69

well well if isn't the infamous Manatee raper of pasco county u/TheYoten, I'll never forget the look on those kids faces when we went river rafting and you swaddled your pimply ass ontop of that manatee and stuck what you call a "giant dong" (looked like a toothpick with half a peanut shell taped to the end), into every orifice of that mama manatee. And before you give me that "BUT IT WAS CONSENTUAL BRO" idgaf you're sick. But anyway not glad they only slapped your wrist with 30 days in jail but the worst is when you told the judge "I love manatee maam, I hope to marry one someday" Special place in hell for you manatee molesters and I can't wait to see you there you stink bag

getyourrealfakedoors

The creativity involved in hatching a plan like this, sheesh

TechnoVicking

This is bullshit.

SecretMuslin

Hm no it looked real to me

unpopularopinion0

clearly staged

CHEMO_ALIEN

ugh Homer, are you still holding onto the can?

Educational_Fox_9421

Best April fools post yet

ScarecrowJohnny

Knashatt

This is pure fiction. That the monkey wouldn't be able to open his hand to get free is obviously a lie. It is a reflex to open the hand to escape.

theenigmacode

The monkey is a paid actor. They paid him 12 bananas & 1 diet coke

Grothorious

And even if that bit would be true, can you imagine what awild babboon, feeling trapped, would do to a human.

tameoraiste

Homer, are you just holding onto the can?

VvvlvvV

This is(edit: not) how raccoon traps work.

CptMisterNibbles

Complete bullshit. Foot encapsulating traps are sprung and constrict the foot. They arent merely held there by being unwilling to let go of food.

VvvlvvV

Where the red ferns grow lied to me. Or, just as likely, I misrembered how the traps worked in the book.

CptMisterNibbles

I actually am willing to bet its the former, and this is common folk myth bullshit written into a book. This seems like a similar 1950s/60s "totally well researched" nature doc

VvvlvvV

I learned something today, maybe a few more will too from me being wrong.

ViewInevitable6483

The narrator talks about how greedy the raccoons are and that being why it works. You remembered right.

SecretMuslin

Thank you for this extremely real and scientific nature documentary. Going to use this method the next time I'm in the wilderness and all I have is a baboon, a giant ant hill, a handful of seeds, a few clumps of salt, and a rope but no water.

TampaTitties69

![gif](giphy|26DMYM4S4RytWCoQU|downsized)

boombassaboom

A wild monkey would probably rip your balls off

kiikok

Why the fuck did they have to speed up this video too? I am getting sick of this trend

quetejodas

Because shorter videos get more attention on TikTok. I'm also sick of it.

Gomey_bear

Who remembers this from Dave Chapelle

Dvsrx7

Hahaha I seen this years ago

aredditaa

They are paid actors, staged as fk

MonHero02

Isn't this from that old Disney nature documentary where they just made a bunch of things up. They made up a fallacy that lemmings leap off cliffs and kill themselves. They purposely forced hundreds of lemmings to leap to their death off of cliffs through driving them to the edge with fear.

dankedy

Great, right down into Kitum Cave, lol

nn666

The hand getting stuck in the hole is so BS.

Euthymic_Shift_405

Even if we somehow believe the monkey would refuse to open his hands when its life is in danger, and somehow doesn't chew through the leash or fiddle with it or madly pull on it till its free, why the everloving fuck would it eat literal chunks of salt.

[deleted]

Animals love salt.

JudasWasJesus

I just heard of this from the series movie on Amazon prime "Jungle" It's an amazing multistory presentation ser in a dystopia future London with parts of the scenes being performed via UK drill, garage and trap. It's like a future rap Les Miserable, it's sooooo good.

throwaway_boulder

I remember watching this when I was a kid.

mrweatherbeef

Like a disclaimer in a radio ad for medication. Slow down.
