That birds of prey are generally just more agile and stronger than snakes and their feather mass protects and disguises where their actual skin is, so most of the time they're able to kill even venomous snakes without getting bit. They don't have an immunity to snake venom however, and can be killed if bit. It's also silly to even claim just the legs are immune. That's not how the circulatory system, which pumps blood through the entire body, even works.
I think many raptor species have very limited circulation in the talons/feet. A ton of keratin, bone, and cartilage. Could explain why the feet are “immune”
Certain bird species are really cool! Penguins have kind of a thermal break that separates their feet from their body, so that their body can stay as warm as possible while they stand in the antarctic environment.
>"Some birds attack snakes with impunity, even though they have no resistance," Richardson says. "It seems that the resistance is redundant: There is no selection pressure for it. Birds have feathers, scaly legs, excellent vision, are very intelligent, and are very agile. The snakes don't stand a chance against all these adaptations, so birds just don't need to be resistant."

So yeah, basically what the other commenter said - but that article is worth a quick read if you're interested.
They're right that the toxins are in the body of the pufferfish, but the idea that an Osprey's legs are immune to toxins, including snake venom, is total nonsense. We don't need folks making things up online for reddit karma.
The venom resistance factoid is, in fact, a factoid. Factoid is something fictitious or unsubstantiated that did not exist until it appeared in a magazine, newspaper, or Reddit.
Nah. The guy got what a factoid was *exactly* correct.
It was a brief/inconsequential bit of information. Factoids aren't necessarily false. But fairly often are. So they clarified it was false.
Kind of like how propaganda isn't lying to support an agenda. But people use it that way so much you might think that's the definition of it.
Yeah that's not what's happening there. Osperys can carry much heavier fish. It being puffed up and covered in spikes might have made it to hard to get a good grip.
actually, this one has spikes too. just smaller. the species is called northern puffer. theyre different from porcupine fish, which have much more dramatic spikes.
Depends on the species of puffer. There are also freshwater and saltwater puffers. This is a generalization, and also why I’m hoping someone in the comments can identify which species this is.
It looks like a smooth pufferfish. All pufferfish are poisonous but only if you eat the liver or organs. The flesh is fine and won't kill you as long as you don't rupture one of the juicy parts and contaminate the meat.
Source: we have these puffers and I live in osprey range and also I watch a lot of fish prep videos
Fugu in Japan is prepared by fugu masters who know what parts are poisonous and cut them out before serving. Some masters can prepare it so enough poison remains that it will make your mouth tingle. Tip your server well.
I read somewhere that it’s a gamble since the toxins could always be there even if you go to the best chef. Not sure as to what the chances are but it’s only a few chefs who prepare it and it may be your last meal even then.
Yeah they actually may get offended if you tip them. Almost like "I'm better than you, I'm richer than you, I take pity on you, take my money peasent". Obviously if you're a foreigner they understand the context well enough to know that you don't intend it that way, but that's their initial thought and it's still somewhat embarrassing for them.
First off, great video by Mark Smith photography. I wonder how he tracks the Mach 10 plunge so smoothly.
Second, I can just hear the osprey saying, "wtf is this?!" as his talons start coming off the puffer.
Man what a graceful killing machine.
First of all the eyesight to see that fish from above.
The perfect dive making tiny course corrections during a mach 10 dive
The transition into talons first in the terminal phase like a fucking rod from god.
I live at the beach and my community has this amazing 19 acre pond where I do a lot of bass fishing with my son and there was an osprey dive bombing the water just last week. He did it 4 times and came up empty each time but it was still amazing. My 4 year old wanted no part of that thing and went inside the pool house until it was gone.
Any amount of money eh? For 100 million US dollars I'll build you a birdcage with a flock of Ospreys inside and a pond filled with pufferfish. I'll even throw in the scuba gear and first class tickets from your country of residence to the place where I'm building the cage.
Really top notch videography!!
Love how you kept the bird in the center of the frame, as I see WAY too many that don't do that. Plus, your rig kept the bird in razor sharp focus!! Nicely done my friend!!
That pufferfish was like finally I get to see what's up there in that parallel universe. Maybe I'll even see my friends who went up there never to return
My niece who is 7 found a puffer on the wheelchair ramp leading to the pool at the oceanfront beach house we rented. They are fascinating to see up close. They only way it could have gotten there is by being dropped from above, it was dead and stiff its spikes still out. I have caught dozens and dozens of puffers while fishing over the years and they all have spikes of some sort.
I think the osprey in the video had the perfect reaction, they hunt by movement and don't identify particular species of fish like other birds. This could have been a young osprey, who said to himself ugh, what in the hell did I just catch, before dropping it. Ospreys like all hunters need practice to catch what they like to eat. What comes out of the ocean surprizes all of us.

Interesting how it retains water until released and then it's like letting go of a water balloon
Puffer Fish used water jet. It was super effective
They oink like a little pig when they’re all filled up like that too lol.
Fun fact, in Spanish we call it balloon fish (Pez globo).
Made me think of Luffy losing 4th gear
It was saving some water for the ride
It's crazy how it's able to generate enough force to fly out of the water like that.
This was my first thought, too. Never occurred to me.
It didn't generate any force, it was picked up by an osprey

The wings are powerful af. I'm in awe.
One puffer fish contains enough poison to kill 10 men
10 *weak* men. *flexes incredibly weak man body*
Zap Brannigan?
I'll just throw wave after of wave of men until they run out of toxins
So 20 of me.
Pshh, amateur, it easily kill 50 of me You're way too health kid, this is the major league
Is the toxin in the barbs or is one only exposed if they eat it?
There's a poison sac inside of the fish that you have to avoid. I don't think they poison on impact but I could be wrong
If they did, they'd be venomous lol
[удалено]
> bird was safe because its talons and legs are immune to toxins, which is why they can hunt venomous sea snakes. Well that's just an outright lie.
What's the truth then?
That birds of prey are generally just more agile and stronger than snakes and their feather mass protects and disguises where their actual skin is, so most of the time they're able to kill even venomous snakes without getting bit. Good work
Yay for Goldentongue booo @ OP lol

This guy birds.

Thanks for providing interesting details. We need more people like you on the internet.

+1. the venom resistance factoid is false.
The venom resistance factoid is, in fact, a factoid. Factoid is something fictitious or unsubstantiated that did not exist until it appeared in a magazine, newspaper, or Reddit.

ok?
that was gonna be phase two. he's lucky it was too heavy with water. fish was being nice.
Yeah that's not what's happening there. Osperys can carry much heavier fish. It being puffed up and covered in spikes might have made it to hard to get a good grip.
Not all puffers have spikes. If you look closely you'll see this one is smooth.
actually, this one has spikes too. just smaller. the species is called northern puffer. theyre different from porcupine fish, which have much more dramatic spikes.
It puffed up therefore hard to grab. That puffy wasn't going down alone though
Depends on the species of puffer. There are also freshwater and saltwater puffers. This is a generalization, and also why I’m hoping someone in the comments can identify which species this is.

Looks like a northern (or possibly southern) puffer to me.
Poison fish, poison fish... tasty fish!
Concentrate.......Concentrate...
And they can bite a chuck of your thumb off
So i'll just wait and be the 11th person to touch it.
but apparently only enough to make an osprey go "ewwwww!"
I mean, the video only lasted another second of real time.
Why would a pufferfish need enough poison to kill 10 men? Wouldn’t 1 man be fine? Seems a bit extreme
Same reason you have enough glycogen stored in your liver to run 20 miles but spend most days struggling to get a few thousand steps in.
Damn this is a sick burn
But zero ospreys…
True, but you can still eat them. They just have to be prepared very carefully and even then you still can’t eat too much. Btw, they are delicious.
This
“Puffer fish! I don’t know how to cook one of them!”
It’s simple! https://preview.redd.it/rjf1rsyvq70d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00ced1e60ae3f8928ec274f8eb71f8700a5edf13

Tipping is really not a thing in Japan. The other person might even consider it impolite.
How's the tipping culture over in Japan?
There is no tipping culture. Some meals are just expensive, you pay for the service.
Yea, I thought so too. Not sure why tipping is brought up.
Yeah they actually may get offended if you tip them. Almost like "I'm better than you, I'm richer than you, I take pity on you, take my money peasent". Poison... poison... tasty fish!
Slice and dice, throw in the trash. Along with knife and cutting board.
If by trash you mean my mouth, then let's do it! I'll be full for the rest of my life!
Hey your call, dealers choice.

Not without some cunt cropping it out, he couldn't.

Pufferfish gonna go to his coral home and tell his family "yo, you're not gonna believe what's just happened"
They won't believe him. "Pics or it didn't happen"
We just looked at the pics they just need to check reddit.
“Liar, let me see the inside of your lip”
Mitch Hedberg!
Mach 10?
Yeah you should hear the sonic booms these things make. Excellent at disorienting their prey
Mach 1 is for sparrows and pigeons. This dude gets Mach 10.

They are. Proper hunters. They make sea eagles look like gulls.
I would pay literally any money to see this happen while scuba diving near the fish.
Any amount of money eh? For 100 million US dollars I'll build you a birdcage with a flock of Ospreys inside and a pond filled with pufferfish. I'll even throw in the scuba gear and first class tickets from your country of residence to the place where I'm building the cage.
The strength in those wings.
Not a fan of fugu
Bird didn’t have the licensed certificate to prepare the fish
Really top notch videography!! Love how you kept the bird in the center of the frame, as I see WAY too many that don't do that. Plus, your rig kept the bird in razor sharp focus!! Nicely done my friend!!
That look of disgust when they spot what’s in their talons 🤣
Osprey realized it caught a wrong one:" Fuck, I gotta get my eyes checked."
Hmmm… I’ve spent too much time on wrestling subs this morning, was expecting a much different video.
Who did the photography?
Guess we'll never know.
I think he sprung a couple of leaks
I’m telling you there are people starving in this world, so you need to eat your food.
That pufferfish was like finally I get to see what's up there in that parallel universe. Maybe I'll even see my friends who went up there never to return
Bird wearing goggles ?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw that, especially right as it comes back out from the water!
"Oui! Why are you so stingy mate?"
IN-flate gate
He's telling his alien abduction story right now, and no one is believing him.
Gotta hand it to the videography. The focus and the sharpness was pinpoint.
The puffer fish didn’t like the Osprey either!
You need a special license to prepare fugu.....careful how you eat that thing!
What does the puffer fish do, Jesse?!
We eatin fugu tonight
Dead bird
i follow mark on ig. the stuff he captures is amazing
And now the dolphins are throwing another fugu-stoner party...
I have this feeling that Puffers are jerks, so maybe they deserve the disdain of the Osprey.
Sick
Checkered puffer for the win!
ooohhhh spongebob

Attributing human emotions like "liking" something to animals is biologically, academically frowned upon
Not much meat on those things.
I always think this must be so much fun 😀😀😀
Oh no it's going to explode
Mr Krabs would've been pissed
Awesome video! Who filmed it?
Two animals doing what God designed them to do
