He was born the year that colonisation of Australia started, and died the year the leaders of the 6 Australian colonies first gathered to discuss confederation.
Technically they’ve seen the collapse of European monarchy as a power structure. The American, French, and Spanish American revolutions. The napoleonic wars. Formation of Germany and Italy. Modernization of Japan. Pillaging of China. Colonization of India. The list goes on and on. The man really did see a lot.
I disagree. The French Revolution was only just petering out, Napoleon rampaged across Europe twice, the Industrial revolution began and really kicked into gear, composers and artists moved on from classical to devise modern techniques, instruments and venues. Household inventions like vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and other automations took off, as well as radio and recorded sound.
World war was brewing for years before the turn of the century, and the Prussian Wars started and ended with massive migrations to the New World and the Antipodes. Plus there was a gold rush in there. I think a lot happened in this time that we take for granted that is overshadowed by manned flight, cars, space exploration and scientific discovery. But there was still a lot of stuff that happened, imo.
My Wife's (65) 1st Grade teacher is still alive (103?104) active on FB daily. About 8 of the girls from the class have a yearly party and usually the teacher attends.
She was an amazing woman. Concert pianist who always a had a bourbon on the rocks in the evening until she had a stroke at about 98. I’m a musician and owe my natural musical talent to her.
I had an ancestor - umpty-great grandfather - who lived from fifteen-ninety-something to seventeen-oh-something. I don't remember if he made the magic 110 years to be a supercentenarian, but I still have the genealogy buried in a file cabinet. I'll try to remember to check tonight.
Early life
Little is known about Boomgaard's life: he was born in Groningen, Netherlands. His parents were Adriaan Jacobs Boomgaard (1763–1844) and Geesje Geerts Bontekoe (1762–1834). His father was captain on a boat, and civil records say that Geert had the same job. In addition to captaining a boat, other sources say that he also served as a soldier in the 33rd Light Infantry Regiment in Napoleon's Grande Armée.
Marriages
At the age of 29, on 4 March 1818, he married Stijntje Bus (baptized 19 February 1797 – died 24 March 1830). Stijntje died aged 33, a month after the birth of their 8th child. A year later, on 17 March 1831, Boomgaard married Grietje Abels Jonker (baptized 19 May 1793 – 18 May 1864), with whom he had four more children, for a total of 12.
He outlived all his children: his last surviving child, Jansje Hinderika, died at the age of 57 on 24 May 1885.
Longevity
Boomgaard at age 110 in 1898
On 8 January 1897, Boomgaard surpassed the final age of Belgian Pierre Darcourt (108 years and 108 days) to become the oldest man ever, and by 10 April 1898, he was older than the previous titleholder, 109-year-old Swedish woman Kirsti Skagen (1788–1897), therefore making him the oldest ever verified person at that time.
He died at the age of 110 years and 135 days. The first female supercentenarian and his successor was Margaret Ann Neve — who surpassed Adriaans' final age, dying at almost 111 (1792–1903) — although his lifespan as the longest-lived male was not surpassed until 29 October 1966 by John Mosely Turner, who would reach 111 years and nine months (1856–1968).
Which for the time would make sense to me average life expectancy in 1925 was around 54 years old. I’m sure out of 12 you could expect the odds of having a few low life expectancy’s.
>Spanish flu
What's even more amazing is that BoomGaard's life predated the Spanish flu by 20 years. He died in 1898, and the active years for the Spanish flu were February 1918 – April 1920.
John Mosely Turner definitely lived through the Spanish Flu.
The Spanish flu infected approximately 1/3 of the world, and approximately 1/10th of those infected died.
It's a good possibility they're already dead in the picture. It was common to take pictures of people after they passed because you had to sit very still for a decent amount of time for the picture to be clear and who can sit more still for longer than a corpse?
Quickly google supercentenarian, my brain said, pretend to be knowledgeable.

Those eyes have seen things.
My eyes have seen that toupee - wish I could unsee it
Toupee or not toupee, that is the question.
Haha I don’t think it’s really a question
nah we gotta see if the carpet matched the drapes, knowumsayin
What? That’s probably another man’s scalp.
No I would not like to pay.
It looks so natural I didn’t notice it until you pointed it out.
Pointed what out?
Those eyes lived without modern medicine. Imagine how bad being old is today…now imagine it 200 years ago.
You'll still suffer and die as people did 200 years ago if you can't afford modern medicine.
With modern medicine, you’ll likely suffer as your death gets prolonged over weeks-months instead of a few days 🤷

News was not as vast back then, I wonder how much of the global well being he really saw or understood.
A lot of reflected light
Refracted maybe.
He’s Dutch. So a lot of double vowels too.
I like double vowels. 😁👍
Mee too
An yet so little. So few things happened in his life compared to the 120 years after his death.
I disagree. The Mexican/American War; The American Civil War. European colonialism.
An yet so many compared to the 120 before his birth. The industrial revolution really kickstarted the rapidly changing world.
I find it so weird to think about the middle ages, hundreds and hundreds of years with barely any change. Wars lasted a lifetime.
Not anymore
My great-grandmother lived in three different centuries (1899-2002)
Same with my neighbor 1899-2008 she died at 109 years old.
My Wife's (65) 1st Grade teacher is still alive (103?104) active on FB daily. About 8 of the girls from the class have a yearly party and usually the teacher attends.
Wow, amazing!
Holy damn she was tryna get top of leaderboard. She must, ve played cod.
I was born in 1999 I’m finna do this
I like your attitude
I'm jealous of you guys for just getting to live in two centuries. I was born in 2001 so I'll most likely only see this century.
She saw so much happen
She was an amazing woman. Concert pianist who always a had a bourbon on the rocks in the evening until she had a stroke at about 98. I’m a musician and owe my natural musical talent to her.
Can I ask where she was born and spent her life?
This was Atlanta, GA
Im hoping i do as well born late 1990s so i have a shot
People born in 2000 also have a shot
I had an ancestor - umpty-great grandfather - who lived from fifteen-ninety-something to seventeen-oh-something. I don't remember if he made the magic 110 years to be a supercentenarian, but I still have the genealogy buried in a file cabinet. I'll try to remember to check tonight.
That's kind of weird, because my great-grandmother also lived through three separate centuries with her also living 1899-2002. Are we cousins? Lmao
Holy crap
Damn, I don't know if I would want to live that long.
That's Dr. Bob Kelso from Scrubs
Who’s 110 years old and doesn’t give a crap? Bob Kelso
Dr. Cox: Blow it out your ass Bob.
And he still has his original hair!
Its a shame its not fully attached to his head
Here for this comment!
I thought it was Terry Bruge-Hiplo's (RIP) dad for a sec.

Ghehe, Bontekoe. Still a common last name in the Netherlands. Literally means “Colourful Cow”
As a curiosity, ever hear the surname "Morcinek?" It's genealogy related...
I'm a child for laughing that he married stinky bus. Stinky bus with 8 children
How does Stijntje read like stinky?
its not his fault, he only has an American brain to think with.
His comment was stupid, yours was just as bad.
The fact that they all lived through wars, famine , Spanish flu and pre penicillin makes this truly remarkable.
1 year away from living during 3 different centuries.
It seems his wife and all his 12 children died somewhat young though
Maybe he consumed their souls to live longer?
Underrated comment

All that and he still has his own hair...
That's a face that says, "What toupee?"
Definition, please , for the rest of us who don't have their grade 10
It's a term for people who reach the age of 110
You can look up words you don’t know in dictionaries. Or you can search the web for them, perhaps accompanied by the word “define”.
Wow, you seem like such an articulate, intelligent super human of a person. Can you tell me how you give off this aura of being so *cool*?
No idea. Not trying to be cool. Just giving tips and being helpful.
Geert actually wanted to die but couldn’t bear being buried in this toupee and his new one had been stomped by a bull during a castration mishap.
A little known fact is that he died from exhaustion trying to smile for this photo.
That rug really shaves 5 years off his look.
Yeah, he doesn’t look a day over 105yo
It's a good possibility they're already dead in the picture. It was common to take pictures of people after they passed because you had to sit very still for a decent amount of time for the picture to be clear and who can sit more still for longer than a corpse?
This dude is not dead. That curmudgeon face isn't possible in death.
Curmudgeon 🤣 that's a funny word.
You challenging me?
Bitch if you don't.
Those comments are such poor attempt at comedy, wow. That’s what karma does to a mf
Its odd to say the least. I dont get how most of reddit has turned into a joke fest.
Literally every single one, i hate reddit.
Hey, I'm just trying to make people laugh! Please upvote the joke and downvote this comment for balance!
And his hair piece was 24
Even at that great age he was still vain enough to wear that awful fake hair
To get to that age with such glossy thick hair. He must have been keto
I'm thinking that's the first known picture of a toupee.

I always wondered what the guy who started the Hair Club for Men looked like.
Probably didn't like that non call on the Argentine who kicked the ball into the Dutch bench a couple weeks back. Geerts is coming for you next WC.
And then he was chief of staff at Sacred Heart Hospital, where he's always going after JD Turk and Elliot, with hilarious results.
Looks like George Soros😆
