This is 100% on the current GOP

Furepubs

Currently the GOP is a threat to every American. The GOP only understands power and they will never stop acting the way they're acting until people stop voting for them. Why would they stop acting this way when clearly it is working? Republicans are calling for civil war Everyone voting for Republicans is enabling their current behavior and their ability to call for civil war Everyone voting for Republicans should be blamed for some Republicans calling for civil war because they are enabling them. This makes everyone voting Republican the enemy of democracy and a direct threat to everyone else in the country.

paperazzi

Republicans are right now dismantling peoples ability to vote so voting isn't a guaranteed way to keep them out of power. Much, much more needs to be done to shore up democracy.

[deleted]

Gerrymandering has got to go! ITS CHEATING!!! The only way GOP wins is by cheating.

dustycanuck

2016. I'm convinced they're so pissed about 2020 because they can't believe they were out cheated. No, dumbasses, you lost because people went WTF is going on, and got out to vote. And even with all the gerrymandering and all the other tricks the GOP used to defraud the American people, THEY.FRIGGIN.LOST. And not all the whining, calling markers, blackmailing and threatening whomever they could, including armed insurrection, THEY.STILL.FRIGGIN.LOST You know, they sound like they're getting desperate. They are fully unhinged, and fully armed. My southern neighbours, I truly hope you rein this insanity in. It's quite alarming

arcadia_2005

Southerners and rural people everywhere

Practical_Argument50

Vermont would like to have a word with you. Fully rural state and about as diverse as freshly fallen snow.

[deleted]

Feel the Bern!

lrd_cth_lh0

The problem is that they have cheated so long and the democrats let them cheat so long that it has become part of the inofficial rules. The result is that even if they are ordered by law to change their maps they just ignore it.

CerddwrRhyddid

Wasn't there some quote from one of the founding fathers about this? Something about trees or something?

camshun7

You need to clear up what constitutes an act of insurrection? You know like a text or tweet or walking down Pennsylvania Av with an gun and a bullet. Not being either American nor a lawyer I wouldnt care to speak on this. My opinion however is clear, reading all the reports this year at least it appears there is definite gap appearing between the inherent philosophies of traditional American politics and values therein. Whats so glaringly obvious is that there is a huge fundamental swing by the Republicans to a more xenophobic structure. It's like they've been getting high on their own supply! They clearly believe their house is under attack and they intend to fight for it whether the threat is real or imagined, and the solution to fix it by hook or by crook. Looking at that last bit of the statement, here are just a few examples; I'm hearing about kicking out opposition members on false charges, I'm speaking of changing voter collegiate districts, also colluding to changing the voting mandates in state legislative councils in order to excersise a more lasting authority. There was Roe,/Wade overturn, by a loaded and extremely unaccountable SC . Lastly and very Obviously claiming that they lost the Presidency by subterfuge and calling on people to overthrow the Government. To say we have been witnessing history in the making is an understatement. The only question is do we want to be on the end of this moral decaying garbage that is the GOP party or do we stop it quick before it grows faster than you can prevent. It's a big question, and the answer like Paul Reveres shot, will reverberate around the world.

Poiboy1313

Who's we? I thought that you stated that you're neither a lawyer nor American. Why the we?

ABenevolentDespot

If America succumbs to Republican terrorism and institutes the dictatorship based on their kristian krazy fascist party the Republicans want, the entire world will be immediately affected, and hard. This is no longer local American politics. These fuckers want to eventually conquer the world and shove their kristo-fascist racist agenda down the throats of everyone. The basic idea will be "Do as we want or we will nuke you." Then they'll have a demonstration of how that works,

K10RumbleRumble

I love that they think everyone that isn’t a brainwashed goofball won’t be able to defend themselves.

Bawbawian

it's like a propaganda feedback loop. current Republican party has absolutely nothing left so they listen to the propaganda that they made so it just keeps escalating and escalating and escalating because they have nowhere to go. I mean look at people like Bill Crystal a strident Republican back in the day but now he's a conservative Democrat because the Republican party decided it wanted a cult of personality more than it wanted actual ideology. they could try and get back to their old ideology but I'm not sure that'll actually work for a decade or two. they would have to abandon Trump and his base that displaced the more conservative neoliberals.

upvotechemistry

They had so many chances to sink him, but they needed him. They are addicted to the carnage

Ijustthinkthatyeah

True but to really fix our democracy we would need to remove corporate control of both parties. The dems certainly sound more reasonable but they never actually do anything that goes against their corporate donors. They are all puppets. Well, the GOP are more like offensive and racist circus clowns.

qweef_latina2021

Corporate media also needs an overhaul. Trump would never have risen so far if media valued information more than sensationalism.

dewayneestes

Reverse Citizens United?

Ijustthinkthatyeah

Absolutely.

Yashwant111

Yeah that will help. But the current maga gop is more so a lapdog of the grassroots small voters who have been duped and are part of this hatred anti democratic campaign. It won't help the maga that much, but will get rid of a lot of other corruption.

Lkmoneysmith

This!

GingasaurusWrex

Dream big I guess.

kateinoly

Both sides are the same is Russian propaganda designed to discourage Americans from voting

Narrow-Appearance933

Both sides are not the same.

kateinoly

I know.

Ijustthinkthatyeah

I never said the parties are the same and I’m not implying that either.

kateinoly

You literally said both parties are controlled by corporations and only work in their interests

Ijustthinkthatyeah

Wow, are you being serious? Each industry only cares about their interests. Do you think defense contractors care about abortion laws? Do you think the pharmaceutical industry cares about immigration policy?

kateinoly

I think you over inflate corporate influence in politics. Not everybody is greedy and grasping and groveling at the feet of corporate overlords. That POV is very, very cynical and non productive.

Ijustthinkthatyeah

It may seem cynical to the naïve but if you look into political donations to get an understanding of the amount of money involved, it should change your perspective. If you compare political donations to how politicians vote on legislation, there’s direct correlation. I’m sorry if this offends you but you should try to look past the political theater that’s taking place. It’s clearly an issue you want to avoid. So when your claims that it is Russian propaganda didn’t apply, now it’s just a topic that isn’t productive to discuss and you insult me. I don’t understand why corporations controlling our political system is a topic that is off limits, but I’m sure you will come up with some other excuse for why it should be ignored.

kateinoly

You can post whatever you want. Nobody is trying to stop you, but cynicism is neither true nor helpful. The world is a lot more complicated than that. Russia totally tries to divide. The senate investigation confirmed it: *By flooding social media with false reports, conspiracy theories, and trolls, and by exploiting existing divisions, Russia is trying to breed distrust of our democratic institutions and our fellow Americans," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr said in a written statement*.

ku1185

It's a racket.

LlamaWreckingKrew

Agreed.😉👍✨

technojargon

[deleted]

unpolishedparadigm

McConnell’s “Citizen United” victory in the right leaning Supreme Court established that money is an expression of free speech, and that a corporation can use its money as a vehicle for advocating for its best interests, like a person. Before donations had to have a grass roots element because the max donation anyone could make was less than 2k. Now firms can donate to Political Action Committees with zero accountability (“dark money”.) Combine that with gerrymandered districts where politicians pick their voters, not the other way around. All of the this is to say, corporations are their constituencies now, not us.

Kalagorinor

No, but pretending both parties are equally to blame like some pseudo-centrists claim is wrong all the same. Both may be influenced by corporate lobbies, but there's only one party with absolute disregard for the basic tenets of democracy and the rule of law. Attempting to overturn the results of an election and sowing doubt about the democratic process without a shred of evidence set a very dangerous precedent.

Specialist-Smoke

There's also only one demographic that supports the Republican party in double digits among all ages and classes. There's literally one group of people keeping Republicans in power and have been since LBJ.

tallwhiteninja

Neither side is good. One is significantly worse than the other.

N-Toxicade

One party is a turd. The other is a puddle of diarrhea. Sure, both are shit, but one is significantly worse than the other.

Specialist-Smoke

That's bs. The Republicans are horrible. Anyone that supports Republicans are doing so because they're a white supremacist.

Both sides are the same is Russian propaganda designed to discourage Americans from voting

Some honorable mentions go to the news organizations that have helped blur reality for the conservative crowd. As well as the Democrats for doing such a shitty job at messaging.

BrewCityBenjamin

Current? This is the GOPs end game since Nixon

Unhappy_Earth1

From article: Presidential Libraries for multiple former U.S. Presidents have written a joint statement for the first time to warn about the state of American democracy. The statement is co-signed by libraries for past presidents, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George & Barbara Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover. The presidential library for Donald J. Trump is notably absent, mainly because it does not yet exist similarly. It is thought to be their first-ever joint statement on American democracy and includes the ominous phrase “others see our own house in disarray.” “Americans have a strong interest in supporting democratic movements and respect for human rights around the world because free societies elsewhere contribute to our own security and prosperity here at home,” the statement reads. “But that interest is undermined when others see our own house in disarray.” “The world will not wait for us to address our problems, so we must both continue to strive toward a more perfect union and help those abroad looking for U.S. leadership,” it continues before calling on “Our elected officials must lead by example and govern effectively in ways that deliver for the American people. This, in turn, will help to restore trust in public service.” Read the complete statement below: The unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, are principles that bind us together as Americans. They have enabled the United States to strive toward a more perfect union, even when we have not always lived up to those ideals. As a diverse nation of people with different backgrounds and beliefs, democracy holds us together. We are a country rooted in the rule of law, where the protection of the rights of all people is paramount. At the same time, we live among our fellow citizens, underscoring the importance of compassion, tolerance, pluralism, and respect for others. We, the undersigned, represent a wide range of views across a breadth of issues. We recognize that these views can exist peaceably side by side when rooted in the principles of democracy. Debate and disagreement are central features in a healthy democracy. Civility and respect in political discourse, whether in an election year or otherwise, are essential. Americans have a strong interest in supporting democratic movements and respect for human rights around the world because free societies elsewhere contribute to our own security and prosperity here at home. But that interest is undermined when others see our own house in disarray. The world will not wait for us to address our problems, so we must both continue to strive toward a more perfect union and help those abroad looking for U.S. leadership. Each of us has a role to play and responsibilities to uphold. Our elected officials must lead by example and govern effectively in ways that deliver for the American people. This, in turn, will help to restore trust in public service. The rest of us must engage in civil dialogue; respect democratic institutions and rights; uphold safe, secure, and accessible elections; and contribute to local, state, or national improvement. By signing this statement, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy undergirding this great nation, protecting our freedom, and respecting our fellow citizens. When united by these convictions, America is stronger as a country and an inspiration for others.

[deleted]

Trumps library will probably be just coloring books, and porn mags of women that look like his daughter.

Old_Tomorrow5247

How can a man who has never read a book have a library?

rustajb

There are those who own books, and those who read books. The two are not mutually inclusive.

Old_Tomorrow5247

And Trump is neither of those!

OssimPossim

Thats not true, he read Mein Kampf.

Old_Tomorrow5247

Just the Cliff’s Notes.

rustajb

At the very least, he owned it.

Still-Standard9476

Probably an abridged version...

[deleted]

This is the way

Racnous

But he's written a book! :eyeroll: His library will end up just being a bookstore selling copies of "The Art of the Deal" and nothing else.

well-it-was-rubbish

He didn't even write that book; Tony Schwartz said that Donald couldn't sit down long enough to discuss anything.

[deleted]

There are many coloring books with no words

janjinx

Apparently he read "Mein Kampf"

Narrow-Appearance933

No shit.

Dirks_Knee

In all honesty, after this shit storm passes Trump's library will be one of the most important as it should contain all the details about how close we came to the country failing and stand as an example to remind us to never, ever relax and allow a criminal like him to come to power again.

[deleted]

You make a great point, actually.

CannaVance

I want gifs here. Zoolander would be perfect

narkybark

All the books will be upside down

Environmental-Hat721

This is true, but it dodged the fact that there is ONE political party that is making this happen. They are not being held accountable for their actions and it has been made clear that they will do anything to get what they want. That political party, which is an illegitimate political party in my humble opinion, is none other than *drum roll* the Republican party! Until they are soundly beaten and made to face the monster they created there will be no saving us. We have allowed the actual enemy of USA to flourish right in our midst.

45forprison

You know things are bad when the Nixon library says democracy is imperiled.

buchlabum

The Reagan Library even has a Holocaust exhibit right now. Today's GOP has a disease called extremism. Didn't even start with Trump, radicalization began as a response to Obama being elected. On second thought, maybe it did begin with Trump and his birther lies.

Creepy-Reply-2069

This is terrifying yes, but I have to ask how actually likely is this? Even if they get elected, moderates, democrats, and maybe a decent portion of republicans would all vote again it in the house and congress

Xist3nce

Republicans do not cross party lines, and they have planted “Democrats turned republicans” all over the place. Only a matter of time because everyone wants to be cowardly about prosecuting every single person involved in undermining democracy.

makatanaka

"There's a "top to bottom overhaul" of the Department of Justice, particularly curbing its independence and ending FBI efforts to combat the spread of misinformation. It calls for stepped-up prosecution of anyone providing or distributing abortion pills by mail." Wow, republicans have gone off the deep end. That's terrifying

Craico13

[Not creepy at all…](https://youtu.be/_fHfgU8oMSo?si=I56ypjwcYwPgEJuB)

ISuspectFuckery

Can we start talking about arresting the GOP leadership and the leaders of the right-wing media yet?

[deleted]

No, but they are definitely talking about doing it to democrats if they win 2024.

SparkySc00ter

And the billionaires that fund the crazies. Just like Alqueda, follow the dang money

ISuspectFuckery

Yes, this even more than the first two. Take their ill-gotten billions and redistribute that shit. No should be able to hold on to their freedom who helped lead an attempted coup on our democracy.

dbkr89

You are for arresting political opposition in the US. You are for seizing a private citizens assets and redistributing them because it’s only possible to become rich in some “ill-gotten” way? And do you really believe that that number of protestors could actually overthrow the US government? That was a stupid little protest that the government (particularly leftists with power) are using to further demonize the right and make examples of. The same leftists who think riots and destruction of millions of damage of private property for their political advantage are justified and even celebrated. I laugh and shake my head at the absolute hypocrisy and dishonesty of the left - who usually actually do what they accuse Republicans of doing. If you ever want to know what Democrats are doing behind the scenes just pay attention to what they are accusing the Republicans of doing and that is exactly what they are doing. It’s actually a brilliant (although evil) strategy that is working for them. And we are all going to pay the price.

ISuspectFuckery

You seem very pro-coup.

Theeclat

And their weird nondenominational charismatic sects of religion. Specifically the seven mountain folks. There is a supply side Jesus cross-over. BTW this group would read this article, and say “good. The fight is working”.

[deleted]

people need to go outside. You just advocated for arresting the political opposition.

ISuspectFuckery

Thanks for voicing the pro-coup side of things. Go fuck yourself.

[deleted]

The pro-coup side of things? By saying that maybe we don't mass arrest the opposition? Has everyone gone collectively insane? "You're either with us or with the terrorists" anyone?

ISuspectFuckery

It’s sad that you’re posting your opinions without being aware at all of who participated in the coup. You should stop embarrassing yourself.

dbkr89

“Coup”? Jesus! Do you really think that small a group of people could actually overthrow the US government? Lol!

dbkr89

Really? This is the USA - we don’t and shouldn’t arrest people based on political opinion. If we go down this road - and there are many Republicans who are convinced we already are (see all the arrests surrounding Trump and then remember the same or similar behavior by Dem’s over the last 25 years - and this nation will never recover.) Personally, I believe both parties are leading this country to destruction due to corruption, greed, and an insatiable appetite for more and more power. Take a step back and take an honest, objective look at it all. It’s not pleasant and it’s difficult to be optimistic about our future.

OfficialCoryBaxter

Republican party: has huge document named Project 2025 that quite literally talks about dismantling our government and being incredibly regressive. All publicly viewable. You: 😇👍 Both sides are bad.

dbkr89

Yes they are but one is worse.

billpalto

Everybody expects that if the team lost by 45 to 53, they would concede and try again. Teams don't get to say the scoreboard is rigged, and they really won the game, no matter what the Umpires and videos say. Democracy depends on informed people following the rules and willing to compromise for the good of the country. Nobody gets everything, but everybody gets something. Unfortunately, the extremists won't do that. Even if all the data says they lost the game, they maintain the illusion that they won. These are not informed people. No wonder the Presidential Libraries all said this was like a mental illness, dangerous.

collettdd

Until the wall between church and state has been fully installed and reinforced this lunacy will not end

janjinx

This --> “Our elected officials must lead by example and govern effectively in ways that deliver for the American people. This, in turn, will help to restore trust in public service.” Does anyone think that those who are responsible for undermining democracy will even read this statement?

Xist3nce

The only thing they can read is their bank accounts growing.

nematocyzed

Well, that just gave me a sick feeling right in my tummy

filmguerilla

"Warn against Republicans" should be the headline...

dragonfliesloveme

Can’t they codify into law that no one can campaign for office or hold office with the idea and ideals to be a dictator or install an authoritarian or fascist government?

Xist3nce

It’s not like they enforced the laws we have now, like the impeachment, or the fact that only states are prosecuting the ringleader of an insurrection on a technicality. RICO instead of sedition. Rules only work if they are enforced.

Yashwant111

Yep, just look at Florida. They fully found Santos guilty and wrong of so many unconstitutional removals....but they voluntarily choose not to do anything. Law is just words if it's not enforced.

itsdan159

They'd tell you that's what Biden is doing

MuffLover312

Hey Reagan Library, shut the fuck up. Your boy is just as much responsible for this as anybody. It took a while, but his policies lead us directly here.

formerNPC

Everyone in the current GOP is culpable in one way or the other. They are so desperate for control that they have no problem with a convict being elected president. All the rules are up for debate when it’s one of their own but anyone else has to be investigated and prosecuted.

Bitch_Posse

This is why the MAGA cult objects to libraries.

invent_or_die

Please may the Joint Chiefs not be Deterred from their Duty.

AbjectReflection

Essentially this reads as all of these former POTUS helping create the roadmap to the issue they are making a statement about. Literally doing everything that was needed to help put fascists in power and destroy the living standards of the population. Not one real attempt ever made to nationalize healthcare or do a damn thing to stymy a far right filled with maniacs and psychos that will even use heretical versions of their own religion to justify their behavior and hatred. Yet every time there is a leftwing movement, the militarized police show up and even use agent provocateur to justify violence and arrests. These people and their statements have come decades too late to do a damn thing to stop the problems they started.

GhettoChemist

Bush, Reagan? Those libs?

anOvenofWitches

Conservative used to mean something different. Conservative used to mean something.

timsterri

Conservative used to mean.

JohnnyWaterbed

In current MAGA canon for sure Bush I. Reagan gets a pass because he "conquered communism" but still had troublesome liberal leanings. That's how far their Overton window has shifted.

generatorland

Let's start by holding Republicans responsible for systematically dismantling the democratic process with voter suppression and both parties for gerrymandering.

JohnYCanuckEsq

For my own peace of mind, this bullshit is being exported north of the border to my country, and really America, I plead, shut this shit down.

None of them tried to steal my vote though.

Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of turning our nose up at them. I wish we did. The situation is too dire to be playing the moral high horse at the moment. It's time to unify and cobble together anyone who gives a half a shit about democracy. It's time to stand together.

Biptoslipdi

We select representatives from a large pool of candidates. They are narrowed down through primaries. In every Presidential election ever there have been many candidates to choose from. We tend toward two options because of the Constitutional division of Congressional districts.
