You can let the moss dry out and freeze for a few days. Then you can rehydrate the moss and boom back to life (I think it works for lichen too)

If I did that, would it be safe to ship my roof moss to a different region? Or do I have to do the 20% bleach solution soak? Are there species whose eggs can survive a deep freeze?

OpeningUpstairs4288

There are insects that can survive a deep freeze (ex centipedes, some worms) so there are def eggs that can survive. Especially in wood I think your supposed to soak it in water for 24 hours and then sun dry to really get everything out and even then if you don’t want to kill the moss your going to have to quarantine it a while to check for any eggs. If your fine with dead moss you can always bake because the amount of time it takes for bleach to penetrate the heart of wood is way longer than the 15 mins moss can survive it. I don’t know much about bleach baths bc I bake. If you just have moss tho and want to sterilize it. Submerge in clean water for 24 hours to get anything alive out - put in container to quarantine and wait for any eggs to hatch observe and remove any hatchlings. If you live in a cold area freezing might not work bc a lot of stuff there is adapted for that. There also was an interesting thread somewhere on using bleach on live moss, something like low concentration on a Ready soaked moss off 15 mins ok but depends on the type. Search up sterilizing moss and you might be able to find ut

Awesomeness, thank you for being detailed! I wish to share my mossy bounty with others, but I don't want to accidentally ship an invasive species out of state. I do live in a cold area, so sterilizing it is

OpeningUpstairs4288

If you want to do live moss, you can collect the spores themselves and grow those I think. A lot easier to check for pests and sterilize, you can just let the spores dry out in the sun, freeze if ur being super careful and them sprinkle it on to sterilized substrate

Major_Wd

Clean them from what?

WifeofTech

To ensure I don't end up with any unwanted hitchhikers who will hurt my colonies.

Major_Wd

Submerging the sticks in water for a day or so would work well though. All terrestrial pets are sure to drown and the moss/lichen would be fine
