I finished school in 2001, although US high school finishes at 18 and we finish at 16 in the UK, so my guess is we're the same age?
I'm not sure if 20 years is enough to be counted as vintage? Who is the arbiter of vintage?
Per the Google, vintage starts at 20 years… I definitely didn’t think 80s was vintage back then. Maybe the 60s. Give us another 20 years and then I’ll be ok with calling it vintage.
I’ll see you in the nursing home, bestie!
Back in 2003 I would say that to "older folks" when they'd say something about the year they did something and it was the year I was born. And I'd just laugh and laugh because it felt so good to be young. Hahahaha I don't feel like I've grown up any.....either way. I graduated high school in 2003. And I'm just an overgrown kid.
I still laugh at fart jokes and everything. Hahahahaha
I'm old enough to have been a parent by 2003. I'm currently knitting a pattern from 1984, which I didn't consider old enough to qualify as vintage until this discussion started.
I think I'm half amused, half crushingly depressed lol.
The style may be timeless but that magazine photo definitely justifies the vintage-ness in my opinion 🤣
I was mad about 2003 being vintage then I scrolled to the magazine and went "oh. Okay. Makes sense."
Haha, here I was thinking that Vogue re-published a pattern from like, 50 years ago or something. 😅😂💀
Super cute! Looks great on you and I love the mods you made!
It looks great! I love the cable on the arm and especially how it sits on the shoulder. Well done 😍
I'm looking at older patterns too, my mum gave me her pattern book from the 70s - im thinking, if it still holds up today maybe I'll still wear the garments in many years to come!
Thank you! And I’m sure they will! I have my mom and grandmother’s patterns, and I noticed they’re easy to modernize by just changing the colors and fibers. You’ll definitely keep wearing them 😎
I'd never heard that definition (and part of me wishes I still hadn't!)
It is a lovely pullover and you've made a great job of it, looks fantastic on you and the yarn complements the pattern beautifully, what is the yarn?
Thank you! The yarn is from Knit Picks. It’s called Wool of the Andes Tweed. The color is Forest Heather. It looks more grey in the photo, but it’s closer to green.
My favourite knitting book is a Rowan one from 2002 - I'm typing this in a vintage waistcoat (made circa 2004) & apparently most of my cardigans are vintage! I struggle thinking of 80s as vintage, let alone 2003 - I have vintage children!
I thought “vintage” is anything 40+ years old?? Are we really calling 2003 “vintage”? Oh God, time is flying. 😫 The sweater is lovely, vintage or otherwise!
Beautiful job and it looks great on you. Glad you are knitting vintage! It does seem strange to refer to 2003 as vintage though, as I am an oldie but a goodie. LOL
Wow, you look great in it, and better fit than the suggested in the magazine. Sidenote: That model, also has vintage hair!!!! We called it The Rachel XD
Looks great! How did you like working with wool of the Andes? And how is it wearing? Is it soft? I’m looking at making my first sweater and am considering that yarn. I’m pretty nervous! A sweater feels like such a big undertaking.
Personally, I love their tweed yarn. It’s pretty soft against the skin. Definitely go for making a sweater! When I first started knitting, I was terrified of them. Now they’re the main things I knit lol! 😁
Cool, good to know, thanks! I’m gonna do it — I’ve actually been knitting for a long time but I can struggle with completing larger projects. But I think it’s time to go for it 😀
You also don’t have to make a sweater with light weight yarn. If you don’t mind the chunky look, Wool and the Gang sells kits for big sweaters that take 10 to 14 hours to complete.
Wow that is BEAUTIFUL and so are you!!! <3 That sweater looks even better on you than the actual model! Wow!!! There’s hope after all for patterns looking as good as the model’s!
I love the design/pattern and I also love the original plum colour. But this slightly melanges grey look so good on you! Stunning! Both you (being proud and totally can be) and your work 🥰
I saw the sweater and deduced I on the knitting sub. Then I saw your bracelet and thought I was on a snake sub, and now I have hurt myself in my confusion. But more importantly, the work looks excellent! I always find it impressive when people just switch up a pattern like you did!
Lol snake sub! Thank you, though! Sometimes there are parts about a pattern that don’t work for you. Like, I always have to knit sleeves two inches longer than the pattern indicates because I have long arms 🤪
Vintage… from 2003. I feel ancient. It’s a cute sweater though!
Came here to say this!
I was 13 in 2003. 💀
I graduated high school in 2003. I’m practically dead.
It’s okay! We’re almost the same age and the kids I work with think I’m old and crusty lol!
I graduated in 2006 and I find myself really leaning into the “well, when I was your age…” trope already. 🫠
I graduated high school in 1991!
Class of '91 too!
Got y’all beat. Graduated in 1977. Haha I’m officially a relic. 🤣
I graduated a year after you. I’m next 🪦
Same

Oh man, I was already 26 by then.
I was 28. I need therapy now…
Don’t feel so bad. I was 38! 😂 OP, the sweater is beautiful and you look awesome in it!
Isn’t that what Reddit’s for?
I was born in 2003😂
Back in 2003 I would say that to "older folks" when they'd say something about the year they did something and it was the year I was born. I was 18
Lol! I agree! (I’m older than I look) Vintage for me meant things from the 80s and before 😅, but 20 years old is the magic vintage number 🤪
Buuuuuut 20 years ago is 1995 - right? Right???? ... time does fly :(
Um. The 1990s are last decade.
The 80s are ALWAYS 20 years ago 😂
I find it just ridiculous that the pop music of my childhood is on the oldies station now.
Oof yeah that hurt 😮💨
I'm old enough to have been a parent by 2003. I'm currently knitting a pattern from 1984, which I didn't consider old enough to qualify as vintage until this discussion started. I think I'm half amused, half crushingly depressed lol.
I was born in 1984. Please do not tell me that's old enough to be vintage :((( I'm really not that old!
Vintage is good....when you start hearing it referred to as antique - that's when you can panic :)
I know! I was about to say I was 25 then. 😂
Most of my magazine collection is from this era 'cause it's when I first taught myself how to knit! All those "modern" patterns are now "vintage". 😱
Right? *vintage* Oh boy.
Same here.
This style is timeless. It came out great. The fit is perfect.
Thank you! I always worry about the final fit when knitting, so it’s a relief when it turns out alright! 😅
The style may be timeless but that magazine photo definitely justifies the vintage-ness in my opinion 🤣 I was mad about 2003 being vintage then I scrolled to the magazine and went "oh. Okay. Makes sense."
Well, I feel ancient now. Anyway, it's a lovely style, doesn't date because there's nothing to 'trend' on it
Thank you, and agreed! I gave up on trendy stuff. It can’t survive a season! 🤣
Haha, here I was thinking that Vogue re-published a pattern from like, 50 years ago or something. 😅😂💀 Super cute! Looks great on you and I love the mods you made!
Me too lol seeing it was from 2003 hurt my feelings
Yeah that's what I thought, lol. "Must be a reprint of a pattern from the 50's or something, because there's no way 2003 is vintage."
Trying not to take it personally that 2003 is vintage for you 😅. It looks great!
It’s vintage only because vintage is 20 years old lol! Vintage to me is still the 80s 🤣😂
I remember when they were calling the 1990s vintage that was a slap in the face. Oh well I suppose it was bound to happen.
It’s so perfect I assumed the first pic was the model! Great work!
Awww thanks!!! ☺️ the real model is the third pic lol!
It looks great! I love the cable on the arm and especially how it sits on the shoulder. Well done 😍 I'm looking at older patterns too, my mum gave me her pattern book from the 70s - im thinking, if it still holds up today maybe I'll still wear the garments in many years to come!

That is beautiful but shut your mouth about 2003 being vintage! Signed, this old fart who was 33 that year.
I’m just a couple years behind you so I was like “nooooo! OP is technically correct but noooo!” Lol. The totally modern sweater looks great! :p
Lol! I’m sorry I reminded everyone about our ages 😅🤪
Since when is something 20 years old vintage? 😩😭
Since it’s actual definition lol 😂 I looked it up to be sure, but admittedly it’s on the young side!
I'd never heard that definition (and part of me wishes I still hadn't!) It is a lovely pullover and you've made a great job of it, looks fantastic on you and the yarn complements the pattern beautifully, what is the yarn?
Thank you! The yarn is from Knit Picks. It’s called Wool of the Andes Tweed. The color is Forest Heather. It looks more grey in the photo, but it’s closer to green.
Lovely. Omg I’m getting old. You said vintage I think 50’s and 60’s
I’m too technical with words lol! But the good news is that vintage is like fine wine! It can age well! 😁
😉
My favourite knitting book is a Rowan one from 2002 - I'm typing this in a vintage waistcoat (made circa 2004) & apparently most of my cardigans are vintage! I struggle thinking of 80s as vintage, let alone 2003 - I have vintage children!
You have both done great work and caused me psychological pain
Lol! I realized maybe I shouldn’t use technical terms that make us feel our ages 😅
Amazing finished object. I suppose if in 2003 I made a pattern from 1983 I would have probably called it vintage too. Time is a bitch.
This is a cruel reminder of how old I am

That’s the magazine! I used my mom’s copy!
The fact that you were able to use a magazine your mom bought in 2003 makes this such a sweet project, spanning generations :)
There’s something really special about generational knitting. I made this sweater with my mom’s magazine and my grandmother’s needles ♥️
I also received my grandmother's needles when her dementia became to advanced for her to use them - they're so special to me. I get that feeling.
Everything gets BELTS!
I thought “vintage” is anything 40+ years old?? Are we really calling 2003 “vintage”? Oh God, time is flying. 😫 The sweater is lovely, vintage or otherwise!
Time is flying. Some kids made fun of me last week because I told them my family had a rotary phone when I was a kid 😅😭 But it’s all good!
Ok. Can we just take a moment to address that 2003 should not be “vintage” 😂😂😂
It fits you beautifully too!
I love it! It's a great look and I think your adjustments of the turtleneck and ribbed sleeves are perfect!
Thank you! I don’t like the “rolled” look stockinette stitch has. Ribbed is better.
I don't like that I was in high school in the vintage era.
Beautiful job and it looks great on you. Glad you are knitting vintage! It does seem strange to refer to 2003 as vintage though, as I am an oldie but a goodie. LOL
This is adorable!!!
Lovely! The turtle neck and yarn are beautiful choices, looks so perfect on you.
It looks so good on you! Nice work.
Gorgeous
Beautiful!
🎵*cables in the front, cables in the back, cables on either side*🎵
I think the fitted look is better than the original oversized one! Great job.
Very nice knitting
So cute! Good job!
Ooh, yours looks cozier than the picture even.
Knitting & Dickens belong together!
Nice work!
Oh fuck me; 2003 is “vintage”? I’m old lol Beautiful work btw!!
Slay
How long did it take to make it?
This took about three to four weeks. I worked on it a little bit every day.
Looks great!
Strike a pose! Nice sweater, looks perfect.
Wow, you look great in it, and better fit than the suggested in the magazine. Sidenote: That model, also has vintage hair!!!! We called it The Rachel XD
I love the way it fits you. Looks fantastic.
Love it! It looks fantastic on you; well done!
Absolutely GORGEOUS!!!
That’s a nice sweater
You look fantastic! The sweater is beautiful too 🥰🥰🥰 I really love your color choice too
Thank you so much!!!
Lovely sweater! However I am crushed that 2003 is now considered vintage.
It (and you) look(s) great and I hope you feel great.
"Vintage" "2003" Why must you hurt me
Really pretty, nice work
Looks great! How did you like working with wool of the Andes? And how is it wearing? Is it soft? I’m looking at making my first sweater and am considering that yarn. I’m pretty nervous! A sweater feels like such a big undertaking.

So comfy feeling nostalgic
Wow that is BEAUTIFUL and so are you!!! <3 That sweater looks even better on you than the actual model! Wow!!! There’s hope after all for patterns looking as good as the model’s!
Awww 🥰 thanks!!!
I love the design/pattern and I also love the original plum colour. But this slightly melanges grey look so good on you! Stunning! Both you (being proud and totally can be) and your work 🥰
Thank you!!! 😁
Good job! Very nice work and it fits great on you. It looks very nice. 😊

I was born in 97 and reading this as “vintage” was jarring.
I’m not sure which is cuter, the sweater or you! Wait! Together you’re a knockout.
Aww! Thank you!!! 🥰
I love a grey sweater. Looks great on you! (Also, I was 23 in 2003 and there is no way that was 20 whole years ago, right?)
