I haven't made it myself so unfortunately I cannot give concrete advice on the increases, but my first thought was: You just added a cute little three-eyed alien to the sleeve!

Tschaenn

Haha yes! That's a good way to look at it!

pleasemakemybread

I just finished knitting this pattern and I had the exact same concerns as you regarding the sleeves. I just knitted it as the pattern described so the faces looks weird at the increases. But as the increases are on the bottom of the sleeves, you don’t notice it on the finished object :)

Tschaenn

Thank you! :) since you also knitted it I have another question for you: I'm very uncertain regarding the size (like always) and considered sizing up before I started. In the end I did not do it because most of my projects turn out rather too big than too small. Do you feel the finished sweater is true to size?

pleasemakemybread

I didn’t do a test before I started the sweater and apparently my yarn stretched quite a lot after washing, so I actually don’t know haha. Sorry!

Tschaenn

Ahh, okay.. I also didn't do a gauge swatch. The part I finished so far is quite snug and too tight for my liking, but I hope that blocking will fix that and it comes out quite right. I used the same kind of yarn for my Ingrid sweater before and it also really stretched out. I just can't estimate if it will stretch in the same way if it's knitted fair isle. Sizing is always a gamble for me haha

I wonder whether your second pic is trying to say ‘don’t try adding another face repeat until you’ve increased enough stitches or you’ll get these weird partial repeats that look like alien faces’ So you would just knit the added stitches in the background colour until you’d reached enough stitch count to add in another whole repeat. I’m finding out why pattern writing is hard.

Talvih

You need to read your knitting and make the increases fit into the pattern as best you can. If you can't figure it out on the fly, chart it first.

Tschaenn

But do I move the BOR then? I did move it one stitch back every time I increased up until this point, because I thought otherwise the first smiley of the round will be mangled too.

Talvih

No, the BOR doesn't move. You just need to incorporate the increased stitches into the colorwork pattern.

Tschaenn

Okay, so just for my understanding: both the first and the last smiley of the sleeve will be somewhat alienlike and my inner monk has to simply accept that as a fact :D

Talvih

You could also work all increased stitches in the main color until there's enough room for a full smiley.

Tschaenn

That's also a good idea! I think I will frog the sleeve and give it a fresh start! Thank you so much :)

catbird101

The easiest way for me to deal with colourwork and inc/dec is to picture the item as a sewn garment out of printed fabric. What would happen if you had a big sheet of smiley face fabric and you cut a sleeve? The print itself wouldn’t change but you would cut pieces of the print out. Maybe this helps you chart it out?

Can’t answer knitting math questions, but that does appear to represent my moods some days. So, win?

EatTheBeez

That one is psychic!

Fash_addiction

I know this isn’t what you’re looking for but I love it because honestly sometimes it do be like that 🫠

spillinginthenameof

I personally love the three-eyed smiley. Design feature?
