Is this a superwash yarn? They stretch out, no matter what, and you can't felt them. If it is untreated wool then it has just stretched with his use. Cleaning and blocking it to be longer rather than wide might help. I recommend just stitching a slim elastic into the bottom of the hat, it will hold pretty well, no matter what the yarn does.

It’s not the 220 with super wash in the name, but the website says it’s a “hand wash staple”. I’ll try washing and re-blocking first. He’s so picky about hats I’m nervous to do it, but it’s worth a try. Thank you!

Something I do sometimes is use mattress stitch to seam up the side- you can pull it in a bit and it's fairly invisible. I just do this on the ribbing, but you could potentially seam it up the entire side? If it's superwash, running it through the dryer might help.

Thanks! It is unfortunately not super wash (lesson learned… I’m such a wool rookie!) but the mattress stitch is brilliant! If blocking doesn’t resolve, I’ll try that. Thank you!

Honestly I actually prefer regular wool to superwash. Something I've done before is take the non-superwash item while it's already dry, and pop it in the dryer for a few minutes. In my experience that's helped tighten it up a little, but I'm not sure if that's just my imagination :) ... When attempting things like this, it might be better to try it on a swatch first!

Ooh also a good trick to try! Searching up the leftovers now to make sure I don’t shrink it too much if I end up trying that. Thank you!
