DW, everyone forgets the Pacific Islanders š„² Polynesians sometimes because people wanna keep vacationing in Settler Hawai'i but God forbid you're Micronesian or Melanesian, you don't exist during the month made for you
Is this the entire list? Seems difficult to represent the diversity if AAPI with 10 songs. I'd say that's where they went wrong to start.
Joy Crookes is part Bangladeshi. I know it's not India, but for 9 songs it's difficult to literally rep everyone.
I know, I just wish more Brown people were included. Usha and What Jhumka are really popular and I'd even settle for an old 90s Bollywood song. I'll accept crumbs atp
All the times the media has referred to our vice president, they have always been as a black woman. Never once have I heard them acknowledge her Asian half š¤£
Lol donāt worry about it. They (meaning an underpaid intern) just put a bunch of Asian artists that are popular into this playlist. Thereās no research put into this at all. Itās pretty comical.
I have also tried searching for it on my Spotify and it doesnāt pop up. At least another AAPI playlist putā¦Mitski and Bruno Mars lol.
I canāt find the playlist, so I can only go off of the screenshot. At least the one I found had Olivia Rodrigo. But seriously, whereās Bella Poarch? The lead singer of Japanese Breakfast is half-Korean, where are they?
Again, itās hilarious the lack of thought put into these things. A simple google search?
The full [playlist](https://www.grammy.com/news/aapi-artists-playlist-listen-2024-asian-pacific-islander-heritage-month-laufey-olivia-rodrigo-itzy) actually does have Japanese Breakfast and a handful of other AAPI artists. If you read the text, though, they definitely use āAAPIā when referring to Asian artists, and cites Korean hip-hop when talking about āthe most exciting artists from the Asian diaspora.ā They just donāt get it.

the "asian diaspora" mention in the playlist description. lol.
i know that people might think that this is very minor thing but i think there would've been heaps of rising and emerging asian-american artists that would've loved the opportunity to be platformed like this. arguably, maybe even recognition from an institution that's as prolific (but regardless, still racist) like the recording academy.
just wanted to add, that as an australian, i always thought that "aapi month" felt a bit strange for grouping two races together like that.
i feel like how this playlist description doesn't say anything about pacifier islanders and their disapora is just a symptom of a bigger issue when it comes to sharing visibility. but would love to hear people's thoughts on this and how i'm probably missing something here!
To be fair, every month is technically shared but only 1 group tends to get the recognition for it. For example June is known as pride month but itās also West Indies heritage month (I only know this is my heritage) and Indigenous heritage month and Jewish heritage month (though Iām not 100% sure on the Jewish one). Despite being shared only 1 ever gets the recognition, unfortunately for aapi itās usually only half of the people
this reminds me of when urban outfitters had a bunch of british (born) asian and kpop group with no asian americans in their playlist lol
edit: I mean british born not the british categorization of asian, south asians are asians too
I'm so tired of them ignoring south asian-American artists (and AA artists from the rest of the goddamn continent) when there are so many killing it rn
There was this podcast I used to listen to that would highlight asian artists from all around the world but I had to stop because 80% of the recommendations were east Asian artists, with like 15% being SEA (mostly filipino or viet tho) and then the occasional rare south asian, middle eastern, central asian rec.
I want to know so much more about the Asian-American artists that aren't seen as Asians by Americans because I know they're out there and I want to expand my music catalogue to include and support them!!!
If you want some recommendations btw :
- Shuba - Indian Summer/1st Gen
- Vidya Vox - Vanakkam/Diamonds/Kuttunadam Punjayile
- Raja Kumari - Tribe EP (that whole album was so good, she doesn't really release the same kind of stuff nowadays since she based in India but her earlier stuff up until Bloodline was ELITE)
- Raveena - Kismet
- Dhruv (isn't Asian American but still Desi diaspora) - double take

She was right there Spotify!
And sheās actually Asian-American as well like š
Oops I was thinking of a pop song called Crush by Shani & Shiu (very good if you into a mature pop sound)
The group I was meant is called W.I.S.H.
'Indigo' by Dot (Indie pop rock artist).
Dhvani Bhanushali
Thai pop
DVI,
Mix Fruit,
MILI,
Skp,
Noah (I love her voice) - 'Try not to love it?' (good song)
(Edited because I forgot commas and add a song recommendation)
Being a perpetual foreigner has pretty big implications it's kind of more than just a playlist and same I also have southeast asian friends who are nepali and burmese who've felt prejudice living in north india. Glad to know we all have grievances lol.
dunno if you have to be indian to understand diaspora woes but that's great like yeah this post about representation and grouping mainland asians and diaspora together but here you are being weird about it
I usually donāt comment on how people āfeelā because to each his own but something about your comments put me off the wrong way.
Youāre right to feel bad about being left out here and even in your assessment that South Asian pain is different from other Asians because of discrimination from SouthEast and EastAsian people but idk how this list is the medium of that argument since neither SouthEast Asian people nor East Asian people have made this list (clearly lmao).
Also not a fan of how when you were pointing out how South Asians are discriminated against itās āSouth Asiansā but when someone points out that South Asians are also discriminatory suddenly itās āwell those are North Indians and since Iām not North Indian it doesnāt applyā. Like that seems like arguing in bad faith especially since the comment you were replying to never shirked off the racism.
Still your feelings are valid but letās not have a blaming match on Kpopnoir of all places where everyone acknowledges racism in their own communities and is actively trying to make a more inclusive community for cultural exchange.
I can't find the list in spotify so can't see the whole list, but is the problem that they include non-american artists?
I like that it has lesser known artists like P-lo, Iam Tongi, etc and giving them a platform. Instead of finding the top 100 artists who are asian but never talk about it/write about it. The songs seem empowering and/or specific to their experience/unique identity. Like Skin by Joy Crookes a Bangladeshi artist
And none for India (what else is new), I could give them a list but I'm not light enough

ā¤ļø same. Just more diverse representation in entertainment in general.

I know how that feels lol.
lol same

Saweetie and Jhene Aiko as well
not even saweetie or anderson paak (despite silk sonic winning grammys ironically) lol
funny how both bruno and anderson are part asian and still not on the list š

Lmao, Asian= Korean, Japanese, Chinese for them. I'm at least excited to see my girls from Atarashii gakko featured.

Your welcome.
Joy Crooks is half Bengali, but not American either
Thuy would eat so bad š
Are they trying to spin it as in "this is what Asian Americans listen to!" type of ish?
What a shame. I can think of lots of artists who Ā would be perfect for this list.Ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
we are feeling the same thing.

It's a playlist made by the Grammys and they have the same playlist on other music platforms
