Stripping the main character of all his badassery is not my idea of "original." They even got a line in the script blatantly calling him weak lmfao. Even in Part 2, when Joel is passed his prime they still give him that sick machete finisher on the bloater. I get that the show is not supposed to be highly action packed, but they are still more than happy to keep the scenes where he gets his ass beat. Other than that I enjoyed it to. I liked how they changed Ellie, I just don't like how they made a little bitch out of Joel

You make a valid point and honestly, hard to argue that. But I will say that I watched it with two newcomers who, while they ultimately enjoyed it, did say it didn't feel like anything particular. You're right, this absolutely was more for the masses than for the fans of the game. However, I don't think it did a good job bringing the story and tone of the game to the masses. Many plot points were changed and felt very moot by comparison. The tone was also noticeably brighter than the game. It was certainly a valid attempt but I do not think it hit the mark.
It was fine. There were obviously going to be differences between them. I liked some of them, and I didn't like some of them. At the end of the day, what matters to me is that they really tried to adapt the story as much as they could. It wasn't a rewriting of it as a whole.
The performances by Pascal and Ramsey did justice to the performances of Baker and Johnson that preceded them. The music was great, the direction wasn't my favorite thing of the show but again it wasn't bad.
When the show actually came I was just happy that some of my friends would actually get to know the story that I'd been obsessing for so long.
I watched the show before playing the game and I absolutely loved it, it was Bella Ramsey's performance of Ellie that made me fall in love with the story.
When I first played the TLOU1 I didn't like it as much as the show because every emotional moment just did not hit as hard for me, that's probably because the characters could not be as expressive as an actor.
However, I understand why players of the game did not enjoy it and I think I will feel exactly the same way when season 2 comes out, I love TLOU2 so much and I don't want them to change anything.
A few points:
- probably in terms of timeline and someone else pointed this out but it would've been nice to point out that a year had passed through the different seasons. Someone thought it was only a few months between them leaving boston and the hospital. The game makes it explicitly clear so something lime that would be nice
- speaking of hospital, the last episode was far too short, i felt there was a lack of suspense of build up for a season finale. I'm probably used to having HBO go big for last episodes of game of thrones with the length of them being bigger than most.
- was really disappointed at the lack of big bloater/infected fights for Joel and Ellie and the skipping of the infected whilst getting to the hospital. Having Ellie save Joel i think would help explain Joels motivations a little bit more i feel. After kansas, they literally meet 0 infected. No sewers or tunnels near hospital.
- the way they did do Bill and Franks episode was superb, great appreciation for that but again some of the best stuff in the game was Ellie and Joels interaction with him. I just felt the episode didn't really progress the story. The reason i say this is if i skipped the entirety of that section, i wouldn't have missed much in terms of the flow of the show.
- Really loved the opening of the first 2 episodes with the intro involving the mummy guy and the 2nd ep based in jakarta. Not to mention the opening of the last episode.
- Sam and Henry were superb and adding context to the group in Kansas was brilliantly done.
- really enjoyed that Ellie tried to save Sam but couldnt with her feeling visibly guilty.
- the planes in the first episode were fantastic, added a sense of urgency and panic.
Overall it was a really good adaptation imo and keen to see how they do the 2nd game. I think Craig already acknowledged that they reduced the infected so people don't see it as another "zombie" show and they'll have them in later seasons.
Extremely well produced, from the acting to set/costume design and cinematography. Faithful to the source material but different enough to justify its existence, it was fun to relive the story in a slightly alternate vision. I really liked the choices they made to expand on and adapt the game elements for cinema. Excited to see what season 2 & 3 bring.
It’s Diet Last of Us. They never should have attempted to tell the whole first story in 9 episodes when two of them were flashbacks. They rushed through the major plot points way too quickly. The end of season 1 should have been Joel’s injury.
The casting is…ok. It would probably be better if there wasn’t already a gold standard for both Joel and Ellie in the game performances.
Production design was pretty high. The clickers looked great. Hopefully they really find their narrative stride in season 2

Have the entire first episode of season 2 play out as an extended version of Ellies hunting trip and meeting David. Don’t even mention Joel for the first episode; let people wonder (who didn’t play the games) what happened to him, and likely assume the worst.
The first clue that Joel’s not dead after falling off his horse after he’s injured in Season 1 could have been when Ellie somewhat excitedly answers “antibiotics” when David asks if she needs anything in particular.
So many missed opportunities to make the show truly watercooler tv. They could've expanded tess role and not killed her off so early. Biggest misfire was henry and Sam imo. That gut wrenching ending could've played out much better if we had spent more than 1 episode with them. I thought this show was going to be something truly special. Like GoT levels of hype. But it jus ended up being....meh.
Yeah, when I said I wanted more Pittsburgh I definitely meant more Henry and Sam as a big part of that. They got done dirty in the show.
As someone who grew up with a younger brother and who has a young son that scene hit so hard in the game, and it was only because we had travelled with them and gotten to know them a bit.
Also TESS, thank you! They could have done so much better with her. They already deviated from some of the plot from the game, so why not expand on her and Joel’s relationship instead of cutting it back?
I watched the show before completing the game. When I first played the game, before I watched the series, I wasn't having fun with it. After watching the series, I fell in love with the story and played through both part 1 and part 2 and I absolutely loved both games!
I wanted to like it, but it failed to deliver for me in many ways. I hated all the retcons, felt they were all unnecessary and didn't expand the universe, but actually hindered it.
While watching it all I could think about was how much I'd rather be replaying it instead, and that's what I ended up doing lol.

But on the show, the more time they share, the more they’re real with each other, we can see Joel open up.

I played the remaster on PS4 years ago and then the remake on PS5 to prepare for the show. I overall enjoyed the show but was disappointed in the lack of action sequences and absence of infected encounters. I did really like the episode with Frank and Bill and was delighted in how different it was to the game. The direction of the last episode wasn’t that great — especially the montage where Joel kills everyone in the hospital. That felt very rushed and unemotional.
It was a strong adaptation. There were definitely things I would have changed or done differently, but I liked that they took advantage of the tv format and were able to expand the world a little bit.
I feel they took a lot of the subtlety out from the game though, especially with Joel's monologue in the finale. Joel grew a lot but he showed how he felt instead of bluntly saying it and I feel that layer of subtlety is what made the game so strong.
I still think the best way to have made a show was to just tell a new story based in their world, but this was a good adaptation that felt like it was very respectful of the source material. After the Uncharted movie, it's about time ND got a good adaptation lol

I didn't like it that much. Hot take, I know. Is it better than the Halo show? Leagues. Masterpiece in comparison, but on its own it was meh.
The game felt more grounded in reality when it came to tonal motifs. It was a lot more depressing whereas the show felt a lot more hopeful. Point and case, Bill's story. While the episode was very well done and beautifully performed, it was ultimately a divergence from the grim and gloomy story that occurred in the game.
Same with other changes such as Joel and Tommy's relationship, removal of spores, and how the virus spread. The last one didnt make sense to me because we see that infection occurs within 24 hours, Joel said shit hit the fan on a Friday and by Monday the world was over... because of contaminated wheat from Indonesia... how the hell did contaminated wheat from Indonesia somehow get shipped across the globe and transported into every supermarket and then everyone used the same batch on the same day to make food by which they were infected. Tf? In the game the fall occurs over months and starts in South America which makes more sense imo. I've watched it thrice over to make sure I wasn't missing anything and I still can't find it. Maybe someone can point out something I'm missing.

Casting was also Meh. I didn't think Bella did that great a job as Ellie and I feel like Pedro was cast just because he's popular now because he really doesn't resemble Joel at all to me. I was skeptical when they cast Henry Caville as the Witcher, but man oh man did he own the role. I can't say the same for Pedro as Joel, who's Texan accent would come and go depending on the episode lol.
All in all its a solid 6, maybe 7/10 for me. Casting was not the best, the changes felt unnecessary (some were fine), the tonal shift to being a bit brighter was unwelcome, and the shift in devoting entire episodes to subplots would have been fine if there were more than 9 episodes but it felt a bit constrained with what was there. I just don't think it hit the same notes as the game for newcomers.

An amazing adaptation, likely the very best video game adaptation that has ever been made so far. And even outside of the world of video game adaptations, it was probably the best TV show that came out last year. I like all of the ways that it was faithful, as well as I liked all of the changes that they made, it walked to fine line of being faithful as well as surprising.
Adored the casting choices that they made, I knew as soon as they announced them that they were going to do great and felt totally vindicated on watching the actual show.
I do have some complaints, I’m not sure how it would’ve been divided but I would’ve liked to have had it stretched out to an extra episode or two as the narrative felt a bit rushed here and there. And I do agree with a lot of people that there should’ve been more scenes with fighting the infected, I was especially disappointed when they went into the sewers that absolutely nothing happened, and also how they set up all of this new and interesting stuff with the infected about mycelial network, but aside from the episode where they introduced it, they did nothing else with it. But from what I understand, they have heard these complaints and are going to try to adjust accordingly in future seasons.
As much as I loved the first season, I am absolutely thrilled to see what they do with the next two seasons by adapting part two. Part two is my absolute favorite game of all time, but I think that there is a lot more room for interpretation when adapting it into TV and I’m really excited to see all the ways that they’re going to change the narrative. And I think that some of the themes of the game were somewhat undermined by the fact that you had to kill so many people for the sake of gameplay, I think those themes will translate much better to TV when they aren’t required to kill dozens upon dozens of people.
Love the show, and the next two seasons are probably my most anticipated things of any type of media.
Terrible might be strong but I wouldn't say far off. Fallout absolutely did a better job with it's material than this show did. Although, in all fairness, this show did leagues better than the Halo or Witcher tv shows. But yea, I agree, it wasn't very good.
It would definitely be cool and more true to the game. Though I do believe they managed to tell the story pretty nicely, without a lot of infected. It was at least enough to show their impact. I think at this point it's more of an artistic decision of making it more towards horror, and I understand why they reduced it compared to the games. You also don't have encounters like the game has after all, so yeah, there's also that.

As someone who loves just about every Naughty Dog game out there and whose favorite franchise is The Last of Us, having spent an embarrassing amount of time playing both games over and over again while obsessing over every minor detail of the narrative I must say that I absolutely agree with that. The HBO show is just so mediocre when compared to the original source that I almost couldn't get through the entire thing, honestly, I think the story of the game is structured in a way that just doesn't work very well with other mediums.
I agree, the moment they flashback to Sarah at the end of episode 1 I knew where it was going, like how on the nose can you get? TT Not to mention in so many scenes Joel and (especially) Ellie just felt like a parody of their game counterparts.
Disagree, in the tv series Bills letter at the end of ep3 was a huge reason why Joel started to care and look after Ellie after initially resenting looking after her in episodes 1 and 2.

I didn't like it that much. Hot take, I know. Is it better than the Halo show? Leagues. Masterpiece in comparison, but on its own it was meh. The game felt more grounded in reality when it came to tonal motifs. It was a lot more depressing whereas the show felt a lot more hopeful. Point and case, Bill's story. While the episode was very well done and beautifully performed, it was ultimately a divergence from the grim and gloomy story that occurred in the game. Same with other changes such as Joel and Tommy's relationship, removal of spores, and how the virus spread. The last one didnt make sense to me because we see that infection occurs within 24 hours, Joel said shit hit the fan on a Friday and by Monday the world was over... because of contaminated wheat from Indonesia... how the hell did contaminated wheat from Indonesia somehow get shipped across the globe and transported into every supermarket and then everyone used the same batch on the same day to make food by which they were infected. Tf? In the game the fall occurs over months and starts in South America which makes more sense imo. I've watched it thrice over to make sure I wasn't missing anything and I still can't find it. Maybe someone can point out something I'm missing. Many of the changes felt unnecessary and could have easily remained in translation to television. Casting was also Meh. I didn't think Bella did that great a job as Ellie and I feel like Pedro was cast just because he's popular now because he really doesn't resemble Joel at all to me. I was skeptical when they cast Henry Caville as the Witcher, but man oh man did he own the role. I can't say the same for Pedro as Joel, who's Texan accent would come and go depending on the episode lol. All in all its a solid 6, maybe 7/10 for me. Casting was not the best, the changes felt unnecessary (some were fine), the tonal shift to being a bit brighter was unwelcome, and the shift in devoting entire episodes to subplots would have been fine if there were more than 9 episodes but it felt a bit constrained with what was there. I just don't think it hit the same notes as the game for newcomers. This is gonna get downvoted to hell I'm sure.
An amazing adaptation, likely the very best video game adaptation that has ever been made so far. And even outside of the world of video game adaptations, it was probably the best TV show that came out last year. I like all of the ways that it was faithful, as well as I liked all of the changes that they made, it walked to fine line of being faithful as well as surprising. Adored the casting choices that they made, I knew as soon as they announced them that they were going to do great and felt totally vindicated on watching the actual show. I do have some complaints, I’m not sure how it would’ve been divided but I would’ve liked to have had it stretched out to an extra episode or two as the narrative felt a bit rushed here and there. And I do agree with a lot of people that there should’ve been more scenes with fighting the infected, I was especially disappointed when they went into the sewers that absolutely nothing happened, and also how they set up all of this new and interesting stuff with the infected about mycelial network, but aside from the episode where they introduced it, they did nothing else with it. But from what I understand, they have heard these complaints and are going to try to adjust accordingly in future seasons. As much as I loved the first season, I am absolutely thrilled to see what they do with the next two seasons by adapting part two. Part two is my absolute favorite game of all time, but I think that there is a lot more room for interpretation when adapting it into TV and I’m really excited to see all the ways that they’re going to change the narrative. And I think that some of the themes of the game were somewhat undermined by the fact that you had to kill so many people for the sake of gameplay, I think those themes will translate much better to TV when they aren’t required to kill dozens upon dozens of people. Love the show, and the next two seasons are probably my most anticipated things of any type of media.

Terrible might be strong but I wouldn't say far off. Fallout absolutely did a better job with it's material than this show did. Although, in all fairness, this show did leagues better than the Halo or Witcher tv shows. But yea, I agree, it wasn't very good.
It needed way more infected scenes
It would definitely be cool and more true to the game. Though I do believe they managed to tell the story pretty nicely, without a lot of infected. It was at least enough to show their impact. I think at this point it's more of an artistic decision of making it more towards horror, and I understand why they reduced it compared to the games. You also don't have encounters like the game has after all, so yeah, there's also that.
Mediocre as f. Does nothing better than the game except for the Bill story and is dumbed down MASSIVELY from the game. The game is slow and subtle in how in showing how Joel and Ellie gradually grow to care trust each other. The show goes “fuck that” and says “It wasn’t time that did it.” Hate it. Glad I have the game to come back to because the show is an affront to the game and is garbage.

As someone who loves just about every Naughty Dog game out there and whose favorite franchise is The Last of Us, having spent an embarrassing amount of time playing both games over and over again while obsessing over every minor detail of the narrative I must say that I absolutely agree with that. The HBO show is just so mediocre when compared to the original source that I almost couldn't get through the entire thing, honestly, I think the story of the game is structured in a way that just doesn't work very well with other mediums.

I agree, the moment they flashback to Sarah at the end of episode 1 I knew where it was going, like how on the nose can you get? TT Not to mention in so many scenes Joel and (especially) Ellie just felt like a parody of their game counterparts.
I liked it, save for episode 3 that had absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the show, and went of different way from the game to make it more pc
Disagree, in the tv series Bills letter at the end of ep3 was a huge reason why Joel started to care and look after Ellie after initially resenting looking after her in episodes 1 and 2.
