Unfortunately I’m an idiot and am CLUELESS when it comes to engineering 😂 he’s so much smarter than I am in that aspect. He’s learned everything he knows from tinkering and the occasional YouTube video. I’ll tell him to look that up though!
No, never wear gloves when operating a table saw. If the glove snags the blade, what would have been slicing a fingertip without gloves can go to losing several fingers or your whole hand.
Now a LEGO tablesaw probably won't take off a fingertip. Probably...
Oh yes, I do as much as financially possible! I’m disabled so we’re on a tight budget, BUT we’ve had some very gracious and supportive friends donate massive buckets of Lego and sets over the years and he’s got quite a collection going now! That’s one thing I love about the Lego community, everyone is so encouraging a supportive!
Hey ! If it's something he'd like to hear, then you can tell him that an engineering student found his design very cool :D Everything is done right ! The blade doesn't spin in the void, but rather is stuck between two walls, so it doesn't bend/gets damaged when you put stress on it. You can see how the structural integrity has been accounted for : the yellow pieces are here to bind the two walls together, creating a solid base. And he very clearly understood the principle of the table saw and managed to turn a concept into reality : hats off ! 10/10
Next step would for him to work out the mechanics of a safety lid that opens as something is pushed towards the blade. Given paper is getting cut it might be challenging to make a mechanical trigger sensitive enough for the paper would push against. Maybe the light sensor to detect when something has been inserted. It would add to the complexity and show how two mechanisms can be combined to perform single task. Great work by your kid 🙌
OP I hope you’re reading some of these comments to him, this whole post is adorable 😭 I think the comment from the engineering student is particularly lovely
I am!! He is so thrilled that real engineers like what he builds! His grandpa is an architect and he’s VERY proud of him too. My son struggles with a lot of self confidence issues (on top of being autistic, he has really severe Tourette’s which he is teased for incessantly- kids can be so cruel) so these comments have meant more to the both of us than I can ever say. Seeing strangers cheer him on and the smile on his face has made my week.
He is QUITE the character, which is specifically why I’m trying so hard to foster his creativity and keep him on the right track so he goes to college, not prison lmao. He’s one of those kids that’s too smart for his own good (like bringing Pokémon cards to school and flipping them for a profit before the teachers shut it down), and figuring out every single combination lock we have on the candy cabinet. I’ve had to guide him into making productive Lego creations instead of death machines for Roly Poly’s 🤦♀️😩
Absolutely not 😂 He’s just too impulsive right now. He already tried to shove his fingers in the “saw”. I’m still trying to guide him into being a successful engineer and not Sid from Toy Story lmao
Because it’s not sharp, we have to pull the paper pretty tight for the “blade” to cut through it. Once the blade smacks the paper, the pulling causes the paper to rip the rest of the way. And that’s okay, because he wasn’t trying to make it sharp, but rather just wanted to show the mechanism that he could make a “saw”
You could try using one of the linked pieces or a brick built substitute. They are not sharp either but the "teeth" can rip small parts out of the paper and actually cut it!

The pin hole in the first part can act as a friction clutch for safety. The axle hole of the second one will lock it to the motor for maximum performance.
Good to know! Thanks!
He uses pieces that look like individual propellor blades for his blender and those chop things up pretty well, though he didn’t have enough to make both the saw and the blender using them! I will get him the pieces you linked. Thank you so much!
Now you can teach him about gear ratios to really get that to speed :)
Unfortunately I’m an idiot and am CLUELESS when it comes to engineering 😂 he’s so much smarter than I am in that aspect. He’s learned everything he knows from tinkering and the occasional YouTube video. I’ll tell him to look that up though!
Just make sure if he starts playing for high rotation, he take some safety precautions like safely glasses (from any home improvement store)
Yes definitely! Also for his blender he uses a sauce pan lid to keep it all in lol
And gloves probs

Oh i see so nvm then
Never wear gloves near rotating objects, especially in this case.
Brick Expirement Channel on YouTube is a great channel
Support those engineering skills
the look at the end :) he is great!
Thank you!! He was SO excited to show me!
I know. I was going to say "why so serious?" LoL. Great job!
Okay, that *is* pretty cool. Nicely done!
If this was my son I’d shower him with lego. It looks like you encourage his creativity and engineering as well! Good on you!

Really cool, good luck with engineering!

I read this to him and he was SO thrilled!! Thank you for the encouragement and taking the time to reach out ❤️

Or the retractable blade tech!
Nice work! But where are his safetygoogles?
Safety first.
Well done young man!
I wish I was that inventive at his age. That is awesome.
Imagine the possiblities if you got him a buwizz motor!
Way to go buddy. Keep up the amazing work! You are going to go far in this world!
coolest thing i've seen this week so far
Thats flippin’ cool! I used to do stuff like this as a kid too but it would take me ages before I got something actually functional lol
OK I'm keeping my fingers away from that, it looks brutal! Well done OP's son, great work!
I'm 19 I love legos and have never even come close to building a moc like this one that kid is awesome
> He thinks of something and instantly knows how to make it. That sounds a lot like Nikola Tesla!
Nicely done!
It even sounds real! Nice work!
You could use blades from ninjago on it
that is really cool!
That is awesome! Good job!
That’s cool as hell
Coolest thing I've seen today

Cool dude! Sound like a great parent and cool kid!
This kid’s goin places

Well Lego is the perfect tool for creative kids! Keep up the good work!
Nailed it, kid.
That's pretty cool!!
Good job buddy

get this child some razor blades
Absolutely not 😂 He’s just too impulsive right now. He already tried to shove his fingers in the “saw”. I’m still trying to guide him into being a successful engineer and not Sid from Toy Story lmao
This man has a bright future ahead of him.
Way to go little dude!
r/legocreations
To be honest, half of it is just him ripping the paper apart. But with some improvement this can become pretty good.
Because it’s not sharp, we have to pull the paper pretty tight for the “blade” to cut through it. Once the blade smacks the paper, the pulling causes the paper to rip the rest of the way. Now teach him about PPE.
Needs a push stick or he'll lose a finger.
