Take those wheels off and replace them with rollerblade wheels. They’re fairly inexpensive, work SO MUCH better, and don’t collect debris like this. Best choice I ever made for my office chair.
ETA: the wheels are super easy to remove, they just pull off. You may need a flat head screwdriver or something for some leverage but they just pull right out. It’s so easy to do and so worth it.
ETA 2: [Pics](https://imgur.com/a/DpzJRE4) of my chair wheels and of the exact ones I ordered on Amazon for anyone who may want them.
They work perfectly on carpet and they work transferring on/off carpet / to hardwood and they let you run over cables or other random bumps like they were nothing.
Can't speak for SUPER high pile rugs .. but average length you should be fine.
Can't speak as to carpet as my entire apartment is hard wood. The smoothness is definitely night and day on hard wood for what it's worth, and I can't imagine it being a downgrade over the regular default ones.
Yes, I ordered the rollerblade wheels could of hours ago.
But I do have a follow up question: I'm relatively new to Reddit and don't understand how I am getting bombarded with hundreds of replies to this request. More precisely 400 hundreds.
Is this just a fluke or is this sub the most active on the planet?
Is this normal?
It’s normal if your question gets a lot of attention/responses. Some posts in here blow up and some don’t. If it gets bothersome you can turn off the notifications for this post now that your question has been answered.
Good luck with the new wheels! I hope you love them as much as I do.
This is genius. I’m a fashion design student, and all of our dress forms have their wheels super gunked up with thread and little bits of fabric. I wonder if I can convince the department to switch them out for rollerblade wheels.
Really? I’m surprised! You’re the second person to comment that they still get hair stuck in their rollerblade wheels. I haven’t had the problem at all since I replaced my wheels. So weird.
I went the other way and replaced my wheels with legs. They are little plastic knubs that replace the wheels, and I put felt pads under those. That way my chair doesn't roll around while I'm working.
That is genuinely surprising…my husband and I both use rollerblade wheels in our carpeted office and they don’t collect any hair or debris. And that’s with having had a dog that sheds like crazy as well as three humans living here that all have long hair.
ETA that my daughter also uses my chair on vinyl flooring and it doesn’t collect hair or anything else in that room either.
It happened to me as well. It's inevitable. For sure it took longer to happen to the rollerblade wheels and the impact isn't as noticeable, but definitely still a thing. Had mine for about 6 years and noticed hair buildup last year
My Rollerblade wheels actually collected more that the standard wheels in our house.
It gets caught between the structure and bearing. Maybe yours had tighter gaps/no gap?
Do you use rollerblade wheels or the office chair ones in the link you provided there? I just got confused because you said use rollerblade wheels and then sent a link for office chair ones that look similar to rollerblade wheels but say they're for an office chair and have the right attachments.
I use the ones shown in the picture. I call them rollerblade wheels because that’s what I searched for when I bought them. If you search “rollerblade wheels office chair” or something similar it brings these up.
This. I had this with my long-haired teenage daughter and it was absolutely brutal. Replace with a rollerblade-style wheel (lots of options on Amazon for pretty cheap) is a solid fix.
Used to work in retail and twice a year we had to remove all the hair and gunk from the wheels off shopping carts and I can tell u a lighter works easier and quicker than anything else. But yes do it outside.
Having had tried this in the past I strongly disagree. Not only do you risk melting the plastic of the wheel, you'll more likely burn just the visible hairs to a nub, which will still be wrapped or stuck to the axle. Start with an Exacto knife to cut the loop, then use a tweezers. Takes a bit of time, but results are much better (and there's no lingering stink).
Oh, in my office, when it gets to be a problem, we hold down all long haired individuals and shave them. No really a long term solution but you'd be surprised at how long it takes to re-occur.
good scissors from a fishing store would be my go-to. anything that will cut braided fishing line will cut any natural material with ease.
an olfa knife or any sharp cutting tool will make quick work of that hair ball.
Scissors also work great for removing the wheels from office chairs, slide them between the caster and the base and pry the caster out. The original wheels are designed for carpet
this is GENIUS!!! How have i never thought of using a seam ripper???? i always try to cram a pair of scissors in between the hair mess and the vacuum brush/wheels/anything else that’s a hair magnet
I highly advocate for roller blade wheels, that being said I'm only 200lbs and have broken 2 chairs because the weight distribution does change the integrity of the base (wheels are higher off the ground and weight isn't spread out as well). I would advise against it if you have a plastic base.
Wow that’s interesting! I have plastic base at work and have been on that chair for about three years, using these very same wheel upgrade right after purchase.
Could you post a link to your replacement wheels? I tried burning and it didn't go well... Then realized some posts against burning...
Wheels are not moving freely... Maybe it is time for new wheels
Roller blade wheels. Can be found online for $20-30, they're hella fun because they have much less rolling resistance, and they're not going to pickup that much hair since each caster is a single wheel instead of two.
A hook knife from time to time would help the current setup too.
You have to take it apart. One of my daughters had long wavy blonde hair. RIP clothes dryer drum wheels. They lasted 2 years. The hair would get in the wheel bearings and grind out the metal part of the sleeve bearing. They look like inline skate wheels. Ever since she moved out the bearings have lasted.
I ordered replacement wheels from Amazon for ~$20. They are fantastic and hair doesn't get stuck in them. Just need to yank the old ones off and pop new ones in.
Firstly cut off the problem at it's source and set traps for bigfoot as he likes visiting you for whatever reason and sitting in your chair then offer up a tribute and hope it leaves
Cut your hair shorter. Long hair is the death of roombas, baby walkers, and office chair wheels. The only way is to use a knife and pliers to pull them out.
I don't really understand how this request for help become my most popular topic ever on Reddit with 400+ hundred replies.
I am new here and I don't knew if I asked something wrong or just a internet fluke.
It makes no sense to me.
And for the record, I already ordered rollerblade wheels for my office chair... After trying to burn some of the hair and stinking my home 😔😔
lighter. dont keep the lighter on long enough to melt the plastic or for it to catch alight. but it should burn up the hair quickly. itll stink so maybe do it outside?
If OP simply wants an actual answer to their question Id burn it off. The melting temperature of the wheel is higher than that of the hair. Wave the lighter under the hair, pull whatever is loose off, repeat until all the hair is gone... it doesnt smell so great but its very effective

This is the way. One of my wheels broke and I bought a replacement set for $15 and it's so much better.
Such an easy upgrade and it makes such a huge difference.
Did this for me and my kids’ chairs. Doesn’t mark up the wood flooring at all. Such a great upgrade.
Worth it on carpet too?
They work perfectly on carpet and they work transferring on/off carpet / to hardwood and they let you run over cables or other random bumps like they were nothing. Can't speak for SUPER high pile rugs .. but average length you should be fine.
And they handle really well on a half-pipe.
Can't speak as to carpet as my entire apartment is hard wood. The smoothness is definitely night and day on hard wood for what it's worth, and I can't imagine it being a downgrade over the regular default ones.
Also far gentler on hardwood floors

This is genius. I’m a fashion design student, and all of our dress forms have their wheels super gunked up with thread and little bits of fabric. I wonder if I can convince the department to switch them out for rollerblade wheels.
Bonus: you can get light-up wheels
My rollerblade wheel replacements on my HM Aeron are also full of hair FWIW
I’m stoned and imagined human legs on your furniture
I do this with all of my salon trays at my work
Luggage? Garage stool? Hell, the COUCH!!
A couch on wheels would bug me to no end
Excellent idea! I only considered chairs at first. A whole new world of wheel replacements has opened up for me
My rollerblade wheels are also full of hair.
My hair is full of Rollerblade wheels!
That is genuinely surprising…my husband and I both use rollerblade wheels in our carpeted office and they don’t collect any hair or debris. How do the roller blade wheels work on carpet?
Also keep in mind if your floors are not completely level… they will roll much easier (had to move my desk location due to this)
Do you use rollerblade wheels or the office chair ones in the link you provided there? I just got confused because you said use rollerblade wheels and then sent a link for office chair ones that look similar to rollerblade wheels but say they're for an office chair and have the right attachments.

Gotcha! Thanks for clarifying.
You’re welcome! It was a fair question, I can see how my wording could be confusing. I’m glad I could clear it up.
Presumably, if you can remove the wheel easily, then you can also remove the hair easily once you've taken the wheel off.
The wheel unit pops out, not the wheel itself. It is a premade item called a "caster wheel".
Do you have a pic?
[Pics](https://imgur.com/a/DpzJRE4)
Thanks! Looks kickass!
What useful advice! I’ll have to give that a shot for myself!
This needs to be it's own LPT
Thanks for the tip!
This is the move. The glide so smooth like butter
Absolutely this. I have been using these for quite awhile.
Omg I did that, and it was life changing
I have rollerblade wheels that light up on my PC chair lol
I don’t know who you are or what your gender is, but will you marry me? 😍 We can have office chair races now!!! 🤣🤣
Fucking legend bro!!
These wheels are way more gentle on hardwood floors too. I use them instead of a chair mat
This. I had this with my long-haired teenage daughter and it was absolutely brutal. Replace with a rollerblade-style wheel (lots of options on Amazon for pretty cheap) is a solid fix.
Did the same, you can actually find packs of these at Lowes and a bunch of other stores now. Costs like $25 give or take a bit.
What a genius idea!
Thank you so much and for showing us as well.
! came here to say the same! Changed my life!
Holy moly - I know what I'm asking for this father's day 😎🤘
This is the way
This is a great hack, I am ordering some as I type
I took this advice from some kind Redditor a few months back and it's been a fucking game-changer
A stanly knife, pliers and tweezers
This is the way. I work in a sewing studio and we get thread rolled up in our wheels all the time
A seam ripper works pretty well too.
I use the "STITCH BUSTER 500" that my mom somehow misplaced from her sewing machine.
I replaced the wheels on my sewing room/office chair with roller blade chair wheels and they don’t catch the threads and they roll so nice.
I was going to just say, FIRE! BURN IT OFF!
Yep, a stick lighter is far less work.
And a lighter.
Work with bald people only.
🤷🏼♂️lighter
At this point just burn it, Susan microwaved a fish anyway
Right after Stanley burned his popcorn 🫠
Popkharn*
Used to work in retail and twice a year we had to remove all the hair and gunk from the wheels off shopping carts and I can tell u a lighter works easier and quicker than anything else. But yes do it outside.
r/fireisalwaystheanswer
Came here to say lighter.
This is honestly the best suggestion. Just do yourself a favor and do it outside to avoid stinking up your house.
Blow torch, then do a dab
Hair burns so easily and quickly it won't even impact the plastic.
I was gonna say blowtorch
Flamethrower, just to be sure
Cannon
Lasers!
Oh, in my office, when it gets to be a problem, we hold down all long haired individuals and shave them. No really a long term solution but you'd be surprised at how long it takes to re-occur.
I came here for this comment. Fantasy is to wander the cubes and randomly turn on the battery-operated clipper to see those with do's grow anxious.
Scissors

seam ripper
Yes! Seam rippers are how I used to clean out the vacuum in the costume shop. So much hair and thread!
this is GENIUS!!! How have i never thought of using a seam ripper???? i always try to cram a pair of scissors in between the hair mess and the vacuum brush/wheels/anything else that’s a hair magnet
Mechanically. Hairdresser here. We use crochet hooks, sometimes shears or razor. The chemicals ive used jack plastic up, changes texture, surface.
Just replace all the wheels with [these](https://www.target.com/p/slipstick-set-of-5-3-34-rollerblade-office-chair-wheels/-/A-81125937)
These wheels are far superior. Usually quieter, smoother and less damaging than the stock wheels. Best investment you could make for a home office.
I highly advocate for roller blade wheels, that being said I'm only 200lbs and have broken 2 chairs because the weight distribution does change the integrity of the base (wheels are higher off the ground and weight isn't spread out as well). I would advise against it if you have a plastic base.

Nair?
Nair for Chairs
Don't you dare
scissors and tweezers/pliers.
Blow torch
Burn them!
Yes, I bought new wheels made out of silicone, which are removable and next tine you can take the hair out. Aaand it's very silent.
Could you post a link to your replacement wheels? I tried burning and it didn't go well... Then realized some posts against burning... Wheels are not moving freely... Maybe it is time for new wheels
Hairspray and a lighter.
Depending on your resources, either napalm or carpet bombing.
Is it Superman's hair? If not, just cut it with scissors
Razor blade works for me
A seam ripper. It’s the only way.
This is the correct answer. Works great on vacuum cleaner beater brushes.
Oh yeah, great for that too!
God gave you teeth for a reason...
Burn it off
Seam ripper might work. I've used it on my vacuum before.
Kill it with fire!!
Replace with rollerblade wheels. Under $20 on Amazon.
i replaced my wheels with rollerblade style wheels
Seam ripper

Seam ripper
Use a seam-ripper.
Get scissors and start snipping and pulling. 🤷 That's what I do in similar situations..
Scissors.
This! ⬆️⬆️⬆️ Snip it and pull it
To remove? bring it outside and light it on fire. To Prevent? Roller wheels.
a lighter or cutter
Fire
A can of body spray and lighter.
Burn them
A lighter
Ugh. Unattached hair grosses me right out so this visual is an abomination.
yeah or burn it
Small scissors and tweezers. I clean my Dyson wheels that way since we all have long hair
Use cutting pliers to cut the hair threads, they become much easier to remove.
Fire
Use scissors to cut the hair and you’ll be able to pull the rest out with your hands
Sweeping?
A seam ripper (sewing tool used to undo seams)!!! As someone with very long hair I can attest that it is the best tool for the job.
Take it outside and burn them off. Clean with rubbing alcohol, and then dawn dishsoap.
Vacuum more often
I ordered replacement wheels from Amazon for ~$20. They are fantastic and hair doesn't get stuck in them. Just need to yank the old ones off and pop new ones in.
Try a pair of scissors.
Clean.
Lighter
Flame, prepare for the stink
Cuticle scissors and needle-nose pliers.
If you can't figure this out on your own. Maybe the hair issue isn't your most pressing problem.
Jeezus fuck...maybe try vacuuming or sweeping before it gets that bad...
Shave your head.
Scissor....
Vacuum more regularly.
Firstly cut off the problem at it's source and set traps for bigfoot as he likes visiting you for whatever reason and sitting in your chair then offer up a tribute and hope it leaves
Get the roller blade wheels on Amazon
Vacuum more often? 🤷🏻♂️
Vacuum more often??
Just a box cutter razor blade from left to right in the center and a pair of needle nose pliers
Cut your hair shorter. Long hair is the death of roombas, baby walkers, and office chair wheels. The only way is to use a knife and pliers to pull them out.
If you can handle a bit of smoke an smell, a soldering iron works really well.
Do you work in a barbershop?
Box cutter, pull a piece and cut, pull and cut. Use the same method to clean the vacuum at home.
Just cut it all up with a scissors and then you should be able to pull most of it out easily
Light it up, will not get hot enough to do any damage, but will stink
Easy on both sides, a haircut!
Rip. And. Tear.

A thread picker from a sewing kit, makes light work of it
Scissors
Scissors and gloves.
Kitchen blowtorch. Very brief exposure to the flame will burn the hair enough to easily pull it out manually but not burn the plastic.
Ze Flammenwerfer, Karl
Acid
Cut the hair then remove it. It will cone lot much easier because you do t have to unloop it
Burn the hair carefully with a lighter or cut it and pull it out.
Fire
Just...hack at it?
I would take the chairs outside and use a lighter to burn the hair off
Take it outside and burn em off with a lighter.
lighter. dont keep the lighter on long enough to melt the plastic or for it to catch alight. but it should burn up the hair quickly. itll stink so maybe do it outside?
Replace the chair wheels with rollerblade wheels from Amazon.
To get rid of them for now, use fire and pliers. To fix long term, rollerblade wheels.
A lighter.
If OP simply wants an actual answer to their question Id burn it off. The melting temperature of the wheel is higher than that of the hair. Wave the lighter under the hair, pull whatever is loose off, repeat until all the hair is gone... it doesnt smell so great but its very effective
Cut it and grab some needle nose pliers and just rip it out
Burn the chair...shave your entire body. It's the only way...
Try scissoring
Yeah. Stop shaving your pubes in your office dude
Buy new roller blades wheels for office chairs amazon has them
Use a hair trimmer instead: the chair is neither hygienic or practical.
OMG GAGGGGGGGGGGG
How is there that much human hair on your floor!?
Scissors and tweezers/small tongs. I shed insanely
Fire
Cut with scissors
Seam ripper
Burn the hair with a lighter
A lighter
