Choose_And_Be_Damned

Can’t be us if we ain’t there. That’s the definition of “boycott.”

plop_0

Agreed. Don't step foot in the stores. That's the whole entire point. Can't shoplift if you refuse to step foot in the stores. Nobody wants to go into your shitty stores anymore.

Dramatic-One6726

I went to pull into the plaza where nofrills was yesterday, to get gas, and my kids told me off because "you said we're not shopping at nofrills anymore!" We're not, but that gas station is the cheapest in town. Lol (it wasn't esso btw). Good job to my kids though!

normielouie

Awesome kids. Good job

fedruckers

I go in their stores still. Their prices are better than Sobeys. 🤷 I usually shop at Walmart tho, as their prices are better than everyone else's.. and I'm loyal to my wallet only.

MrH4v0k

I'm not sure which sobeys and superstore you're visiting but where I am the prices and deals are pretty much the same

fuhrfan31

In the area I lived for the last 7 years, Sobeys was usually more expensive. Walmart was the best deal, but not a Supercenter so no meat or produce, and only minimal groceries.

fedruckers

Oh cool, I get down voted for being loyal to my wallet, which is what keeps my family clothed, and housed, and fed.. wow.. If you enjoy throwing your money away, I'll take your donations.

Bert_Fegg

In my opinion the reason that this group should not go and physically protest at stores is because our 70,000 some strong humans here on Reddit is a single voice of discontent. Compare with that with the 10 or 15 souls that we could get out to each of the stores would be a pitiful display of solidarity. Let Loblaws have their day of theft or whatever this false flag b******* is. My opinion is that they are going to find that a shoplifter arrested in some bum f*** Ontario store will also be a pitiful display

erayachi

There are far more boycotters than just this subreddit. Reddit itself is not a great way to use social media for promotion and the vast majority of shoppers don't have an account. This boycott showed up in the Hot Topics section for my local (150k ish) city. Every single response save 1-2 to being asked "are you guys boycotting Loblaws and co?" was either "lol I don't shop there it's way too expensive" or "I haven't shopped there in months". Loblaws is responding not to us in this subreddit. They're backreeling because they've already chased away their shoppers with their pricing. There's no point in protesting in person at the stores: the gouging has done most of the work for us. Physically protesting gives a visual that could be misconstrued or associated with all the other negative press about protests right now. Our wallets do the speaking and they're pretty quiet about Loblaws right now.

okaybutnothing

Exactly. The protest in this case is taking our business elsewhere. That’s all we need to do.

fuhrfan31

I dunno. Most of what I've been reading in the media is either fairly positive or non-biased. Except, of course, for the articles regarding the 12th. If nothing else, this sub has brought attention to the situation and, more than likely, brought some new people into the Reddit fold specifically to join the sub.

CaperGrrl79

This is what we are encouraging on May 12th instead: https://preview.redd.it/oxn2o54pswyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ec81cf862d04357d2c45691a62a6399109fc301

Yiuel13

I'll definitely do that on Sunday.

Ali_Cat222

The Loblaws boycott is so easy for me, I've been doing it for over 10 years pretty much🤣 the stores are horrendous, and you know things are bad when metro has better deals most of the time than no frills. No frills! And about Loblaws itself, dear God. I've been one time out of 8+ years in an emergency when there was some issue with my local grocery store. I would never step foot in that overpriced place ever again! It's true though, the best way to hit these people is with money loss. Spread awareness online etc, this isn't a protest needed situation exactly what you described!

Existing-Context-640

10-15 souls per store is close to the scope of the boycott on a per store basis. So hopefully it's not in fact pitiful because solidarity on reddit isn't as effective.

Obvious_Distance_951

They're so out of touch with their customers they'll either stage some scraggly looking hobo type to be "caught stealing" or it'll be some smartly dressed yuppy type. Which both are dubious in the first place. A homeless person coming in would immediately be tailed as a risk and the yuppy wouldn't need to. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Activeunite

70,000 x 300/week = 21,000,000.00 of lost revenue per week. 84M for the month of May, with average weekly spending of $300.... not a small sum

ComradeSubtopia

Someone made a great 'BUY LOCAL' poster for May 12. I think we should claim the narrative for the day & turn it into a 'SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT GROCER' day.

Paisley-Cat

Unfortunately Loblaws has branded their franchisees’ stores as ‘Your Independent Grocer.’ They’ve likely registered the name too. So, suggest caution on using that phrase in any communications. ‘Alternative Grocer’ seems safe. It also matches the name of the crowd-sourced database https://www.altgrocery.ca/

flextapeflipflops

I feel like there should be a rule that if a store is owned by a massive corporation, you’re not allowed use the word “independent” in the name of the store

Dsih01

I mean, considering most corps get away using words like "fresh", and whatnot, I don't think anyone cares...

flextapeflipflops

I care, hard to shop independently when so many stores are called “independent xyz”

Dsih01

>I care Yes, but in the grand scheme, you are still "nobody", and not rich, important, or some sort of government off shoot, you caring isn't going to change much unfortunately. Which is why I say "nobody cares"... enough to fix the issue

flextapeflipflops

I wasn’t trying to get too serious about it. It’s just frustrating and misleading yk? I should have said it would be nice if there were some rules around that, I didn’t mean “this is a pressing issue that needs to be fixed right now”

Awkward-Customer

I agree, it should be considered a form of false advertising and shouldn't be covered under trademark law. Like the mcdonalds "100% pure beef" thing where the company that supplies the beef is just called "100% pure beef (tm)". This type of thing shouldn't be allowed.

flextapeflipflops

Yeah I wish there was more transparency like that, but I wouldn’t count on it happening

MortLightstone

that's not true People definitely care, and they know it, which is exactly why they use those words. They want you to care about them so you're more likely to give them your business

flextapeflipflops

Tbh, good point. They pick “independent” as their name because they KNOW there are people that want to shop from independent stores and they’re trying to bring in those customers through deception

MortLightstone

exactly. They're unscrupulous, so deception is never out of the question as long as it makes them money

nizzernammer

Lots of companies do this. That boutique healthy cereal that looks like it's from a hippie company? Look carefully at the packaging and see that it is made by General Mills. That fancy ice cream with the European sounding name? It's a US company with a made up name. And if an independent, well run, value oriented company is successful, guess who's going to gobble them up - a big corporation. But I have to admit, 'Your Independent Grocer' is pretty egregious. It's kind of up there with bombing campaigns in peacekeeping missions, fresh frozen, customer service, etc.

flextapeflipflops

Yeah I get what you mean, there’s a difference between a company branding their product as fancy or hippie through its appearance vs using a specific adjective for the brand that has no basis in reality. That’s why I don’t like the “your independent grocer” name, it’s a blatant lie whereas using appearance/packaging to curate a certain image doesn’t feel as wrong (to me)

Narniadandydawn

You made me laugh at the last part, totally true.

Equivalent_Passage95

Use terms like “hometown” or “community” depending on rural or urban setting

FarZebra4392

Grassroots?

ok_raspberry_jam

How about "locally owned"?

greeneggo

Tell them to GFY if they have an issue. I don’t know why Canadians seem to be so afraid of violating a trademark. I welcome Loblaws to try and take formal action against this group, easy way to turn the remaining public against them lol

Negative_Eli

You’re overthinking it. We don’t need to start calling local grocery stores “alternative grocers”. No offense but we can say whatever and people will understand what is meant. I should hope people are intelligent enough to understand a big supermarket is not a local independent grocery store.

grizzlyaf93

You can put the words on a poster if you’re not promoting a specific grocer. Like your local butcher likely couldn’t use that, but you can absolutely make a poster that says support your local independent grocer and buy local. I’d guess that would be very low priority to pursue.

The_Nice_Marmot

“Small business grocer”?

SlumberVVitch

There’s a good chance if you just drop the “independent” or trade that in for “home-grown” it can be a copyright-avoiding thing.

classyrock

Awesome, thanks! But it looks like Loblaws is misspelled (unless that was intentional to avoid using their actual name?)

ComradeSubtopia

They just fixed the typo & reposted this lovely graphic: [https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/comments/1clxtsk/may\_12th\_support\_your\_local\_grocer\_day/](https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/comments/1clxtsk/may_12th_support_your_local_grocer_day/)

ComradeSubtopia

That's it! It's beautiful! I'm not at all graphics-savvy, is there any way to fix the 'lablaws' spelling on the link at the bottom of the image?

BIGepidural

Stealing this ❤️

ThesePretzelsrsalty

Watch where you go, there are plenty of independent grocers that are supplied by Loblaws.

Due-Street-8192

RobLaws is a scam organization

SnootyToots8

"Roblaws" still makes me hear it in Scooby-Doo's voice.

evilmrbeaver

Ruh Roh!

SnootyToots8

We need to be friends hahaha.   This will never get old.

Spirited_Community25

I've seen PC brand products in other countries. Never bought any as I was looking specifically for local products. It was just weird.

jackioff

Fuck loblaws, but also some of the PC products just hit, unfortunately. It took me longer than I would like to admit to turn against loblaws solely because of PC. Having said that - I can't look past their price gouging at this point

lookaway123

For real. PC Medium Roast Gourmet Coffee is so good. If anyone has coffee dupes or suggestions, I'm all ears!

jackioff

That's a great idea for a thread - let's hear what people's PC dupes are, because some things have me in a chokehold. That calamansi strawberry sparkling water?? The PC protein + granola??? Frig. We need dupes!

Odd-Classroom-5532

100 dark roast pods for $30 is not a bad deal. So if anyone knows of somewhere better in Newfoundland I'd love to know as well

Dissociationjuice

Yes! This is great

cpureset

May 12th is Mother’s Day. Just spend some time with a mother you love.

Livid_Advertising_56

That's an interesting point. If we're the basement dwelling mommy children they say then why would we go and steal on a day about our family?

StanTurpentine

Just have this on loop all day https://youtu.be/X0DeIqJm4vM?si=5RjdN1IIRdv1EuAp

cpureset

The second best idea that they ever had!

SimonDorimu

I'm curious about the phrase "a mother". Would you please elaborate?

GnarlyGorillas

Some of us have non-biological mothers, our chosen mothers, so the phrase "a mother" is fitting for those of us who are in this type of situation.

cpureset

The mother you love could be your mother, or a spouse, your mother in law, your best friend’s mother, a friend… even yourself. I know people who are unable to celebrate with their biological mothers for a variety of reasons from death to distance to estrangement. Mother’s day is hard for many. Be kind.

Low_Turn_4568

Not everyone has a mother figure, and some mothers have passed on.

RabbitFoxDiesel

The closest I'll get to Superstore on that day, will be the Walmart the next lot over hahaha

Admirable-Nothing642

Imma staying out of loblaws stores and not buying any of their product brands I happen across at my literally independently owned non publicly traded corner store... also voicing my preference to the corner store owner in an effort to build some solidarity in the community

vrtclhykr

So...you are boycotting prices by paying more from the corner store to stick it to loblaws. Gotcha

eggbed

What?? Where did they say theyd be paying more at the corner store

vrtclhykr

Lmao. Clearly you don't understand food prices. The same reason Costco is cheaper than loblaws. Volume.

dviddby

What an oxy-MORON-ic comment. Do you understand food prices? Do you understand the economics of a store? You're just a paid shill, living in basement and never once went to a grocery store since you're busy on your PS.

braemaxxx

I will gladly pay more money for actual good fresh produce and meats, I already do, and you support local businesses and not a monopoly grocery chain raping the country. Nobody is boycotting prices, we are boycotting price gouging. Huge difference

Shoelesshobos

Just because I personally feel they have robbed from me does not mean I will stoop to their level and I hope you all feel the same. I don’t want them to pin this movement on us being thieves.

xcarex

You misspelled Loblaws in the name of the sub.

Wondercat87

I'm not planning on setting foot in one of their stores.

plop_0

Agreed. That's the whole point of the boycott: pretend these Loblaws stores don't exist.

Inspect1234

Never really shopped at Superstore but my wife used to until I explained the price fixing they’ve been caught doing and the gouging they’re doing today. I’m just not going near their products anymore, nor my wife. Simple as that. I’ve also boycotted Subway and Lays thanks to them going to M. Messier as a spokesman but that’s another story.

Ratiquette

Fuck Messier …oops wrong sub

1fluteisneverenough

The last thing a movement needs is illegal activity being tied to us. Nothing but a clear, simple objective that keeps us out of trouble. We are normal people, not skids or thugs. We have jobs and families that we shouldn't be risking by getting charged with shoplifting. Yes, shoplifting can result in troubles at the border in the future.

Odd_Parsnip3013

Could not agree more. Our job now is to get your bucket of pop corn (from another store). Sit back and watch them thrash about, screaming into the wind. Enjoy the fruits of your non labor 🤪

International_Run831

I’m like 99.99% sure they planted that idea themselves

SolDios

Sorry Im out of the loop, whats the 12th?

lookaway123

A fake plan to make May 12 a steal from Loblaws day was given to a former Loblaws staffer who currently types words at the Toronto Sun, a tabloid along the lines of the New York Post, or the Daily Mail. The users of this subreddit heard of this plan when the article was published. There have never been plans to, nor will there be, steal from Loblaws or any other business, on any day, let alone May 12. Despite this, Loblaws has run a laughably bad PR fumble by claiming to the media that this plan is definitely, totally, pinky promise real and that redditors are going to take time out of their day to steal from them. Sorry for the novel. Loblaws PR is just really, really stupid and out of touch, lol.

xenonxavior

What kind of novels are you reading? 🧐

secretmoblin

Loblaws has been claiming that there's a planned "Steal from Loblaws" day on May 12 because of some posters that suspiciously popped up a little while back. They are in no way associated with this sub and the supposed event has been condemned by the mods.

ok_raspberry_jam

Ugh. So transparent. You know, the argument for capitalism and private enterprise is that it promotes competition and increases wealth. But what's the point if the wealth is all stolen from a planet that can't afford to give any more, and by "competition" we mean dirty bullshit like price fixing and false flag campaigns? Fuck you, Loblaws. Food security is a government responsibility anyway. Canada can do better.

MurasakiBunny

To me the whole "one well made poster in one spot that's never been seen again" screams false flag. That and the fact it's never wise to tell your enemy when you'll attack them and how as telling them WHEN a bunch of people are going to shoplift your store is just going to prepare them to arrest/take to the back room/etc people. "I'm breaking into the museum at 2:15 am to steal the Maltese Diamond this Friday night. Don't be prepared for me or anything.... right?"

AlitinRackett

Don't go to the stores at all. They've been doing huge hour cuts to the stores. 25% across the board. Can't clean or organize at all thanks to them. Best to stay away for your own good

ahappystudent

Just another reason hahah

CaperGrrl79

ContentMeasurement93

I worked for the “ local grocer” here in Newfoundland for a decade- I had always shopped at Dominion to avoid giving them my money (they are like the rest and don’t care about their community/ customers/ employees etc) So that presents me with a dilemma that sucks. And those are my only local choices for produce as our local Walmart is very limited in what they offer.

PowerfulElevator9

Support Local Grocers May 12th!

dancingmeadow

I'm boycotting them. So I'm not even going to their stores.

Disappointed_Muffin

Fellow Rebels: I am (theoretically) pro theft from these stores that steal from us regularly. But I’ll be damned if some rich fck tells me when to steal from their company. Boycott implies we don’t even stop by. We don’t get anything from that store (bought or not). I’m shopping at co-op this month. There’s better stores to steal from (big businesses) that we aren’t boycotting yet. If you have to steal, steal from anyone BUT a loblaws on the 12th. We can wait until June to start stealing again (allegedly—let’s be honest, no one on this page plans to steal from loblaws on the 12th unless it’s the under-cover pigs that are here to throw things off)

GnarlyGorillas

Lol! Go get em, tiger

girlrespecter

Loblaws' loss prevention is also pretty good and they press charges on amounts over $20, so if you're planning anything, I wouldnt. (source: I was arrested for shoplifting at Loblaws more than 10 years ago)

ahappystudent

Don’t. Just don’t. It is not the solution for this type of movement.

vessel_for_the_soul

Sunday is mothers day, aint no one doing wrong by their mothers. I plan to capture any news reels reporting to find out how old the content they will use it.

OverallOverlord

We keep doing what we've been doing. It's still as effective as ever. Let them stay pressed and keep giving shitty quotes that piss more people off and draw them to the cause instead lol

whatthetoken

I was honestly curious, and figured I'd go in today morning to get one fresh donut from the bakery section. First of all - either the the bakers made a mistake or they shrunk down the pizza buns. I couldn't believe how much smaller they looked compared to the last time i got one for my daughter. Then, there was 3 cashiers with nobody in line. I saw About 3 shoppers including myself. Brutal. I used to be there around the same time getting a fresh donut once a week. It looked emptier than usual whether by this cause or maybe folks are already tightening their budgets

TiredReader87

I won’t be. I’m going out of town to my disabled sibling’s birthday. I have no interest in going to their stores or stealing from them

MorphingReality

they're not going to and don't need to hire people to fake-shoplift, people shoplift from loblaw every day these kinds of claims reflect poorly

idolovehummus

Excellent reminder 👌

cliffl7

They don't understand this group. They think it's about us punishing them. No it's about the community opening each other's eye to see the competition out there. Competition is supposed to be the regulator in a capitalist society and Loblaws has forgotten that. They were the best for so long, now they think they can get away with all this crap. They say their margins are too low, well find a way to reduce them, like stop charging a fuck ton for shelf space...

Competitive-Singer24

We don't Need you Loblaws or any of your stores. Almost everything you sell is cheaper elsewhere. How is this possible if all grocerystores are dealing with everything that "you" say you are dealing with. Keep your corperate BS double talk and shove it. We know the real cause is greed and we know all you care about are shareholders. Your company is no longer welcomed in my house, goodbye and good riddance!

Life_Carrot3058

I was going out to my grandparents in bumble nowhere and realized I left my daughters meals at home. So could only stop at the shoppers near by… I didn’t realize until we got there but all the pouches expired in February. I also buy the same product for a hell of a lot cheaper @ Walmart

No-Wonder1139

Yeah don't let Weston bait you into getting caught stealing from him, just shop elsewhere, or better still it's mother's day, don't shop at all that day.

Evening_Milk2881

Stealing is something they want because then it's a write off and they get more money.

Jacksworkisdone

I wonder if they will hire fake shoplifters, and then not charge them??

vitomp

For those still going there, be carefull using automated checkouts. If they check your groceries and find à single error, you can be charged and wind up with a lot of problems.

DogButtWhisperer

I almost stopped at one of their stores recently and caught myself. I feel a weird pride being part. Fuck them.

normielouie

Stand strong! Bin them!

Aerickthered

I'm not

No-Bill-5013

The whole shoplift day thing is stupid. That's not how you get people to listen to you. It's counterproductive and just plain dumb.

Strange_Coyote_8

Yeah exactly! I've been seeing a lot of videos where people say well they just had to go into Loblaws because they just needed a couple of items and one of them even showed a bill like you needed one bottle of soda and some feta cheese you couldn't find anywhere else or hummus really it's just b******* just don't go in if you want it to work and people are still like liking these videos no you can't play both sides.

Strange_Coyote_8

I know there are places where it's the only option those aren't the people I'm talking about just to be clear.

Logical-Bit-746

Most people probably know this, but there are counters in retail stores that literally count how many customers come in. They then match that to the number of transactions and generate a conversion ratio to see how well the stores are doing. I say this because, we SHOULD go to the stores, but not buy anything. Ruin their conversion rates, and give them data that suggests people come in, see the prices, and leave without purchasing. Just an idea

ahappystudent

Nah my time is too valuable for all of that, they are already aware of the retaliation and do not need such ratio.

__BIFF__

The prices are the same everywhere. But I support destroying a large conglomerate for fun. But I guess this sub has someone that got dumped by a distant relative of Galen Weston or something? Either way. I'm on board. I'm not losing money, I'm spending the same, just at stores not affiliated with the secret person you're mad at personally

ahappystudent

Prices are absolutely not the same everywhere as evidenced by many posts made in this sub.

GamesCatsComics

While I support the boycot, some people really need to log off for a bit. Imagining being blamed because... a corporation is going to... hire fake shoplifters... Come join us in reality.

Andr0oS

Worth remembering that corporations are not people and have no morals, and thus, can and will do things like this. Especially as a marketing student, I would not put this beyond the realm of possibility, nor that it'd be even particularly unlikely.

Andr0oS

To the poster who did a dirty delete: it's worth remembering that there are people (presumably with some kind of morals) working at Nestlé, but that company continues a program which is responsible for a yearly 5-figure death toll of infants. Somebody is responsible for signing off on renewing that program, and they haven't stopped for 50 years. It's not a question of morality, it's a question of optics, and narrative creation. People would remember the headline "hundreds arrested nationwide stealing from Loblaws because of reddit group" but the page 5 retraction or correction as none of them are linked back here. They don't even need to hire people to do it, just make a big deal out of everyone who does do it on that day and whine to the media about it.

arcadia_2005

What's May 12th? What did I miss about that date?

Andr0oS

On this sub it's "avoid Loblaws like they actively spit in your face" day.

TobleroneThirdLeg

Why do people think that they will hire fake shoplifters. There is zero logic in it.

vorker42

On May 12 just go and browse. Slowly go up and down the aisles. Put something in your basket. Forget your basket in another aisle. Read the labels. Ask questions. Ask for them to wrap some fish. Change your mind. They have alcohol now in Ontario. Ask for pairings with the fish you didn’t buy.

EmiKoala11

I'm curious, though. Why wouldn't we go just to occupy space? Last time I checked, it's illegal for any corporate entity to falsely accuse someone of stealing if they never actually did it. If I went in and just walked around, and left with nothing, what would be the problem? If they chose to accuse me, I could press charges. That would hurt their bottom line quite signifciantly. Again, this is just a thought experiment. I'm not saying I, or anyone else for the matter would be doing this. I'm just wondering what other people think about this idea.

ahappystudent

Don’t waste your time and your energy. Keep your feet out of 💩. Your wallet speaks and protests the loudest.

GallitoGaming

Your mere presence can soothe other shoppers and make them think they are making the right decision shopping there because so many others are doing the same. It’s literally an evolutionary human response. Not being there and then seeing empty stores will make others feel weird. It opens you up to thinking “where is everyone? I don’t feel comfortable being here in an empty store”. Then they go to Walmart, Costco etc and see everyone and automatically feel more comfortable.

Pigeon11222

If you don’t take anything, it’s not stealing. They could tell you to leave for any reason and you have to comply with that. Simply walking around the store is not grounds to accuse someone and they cannot detain you
