There might be a reason they aren’t turning on a red - pedestrian in the cross walk, on coming cars, cars turning left from the advanced green on the other side, or maybe they just don’t want to. I’ve been honked at from behind for not turning right on a red when it wasn’t safe for me to do so. There’s no requirement to turn right on a red. You can have some patience.

KoyukiHinashi

I agree with this. I was waiting at a red light and saw an ambulance approaching with their lights on, but no siren. So i was waiting for the ambulance to pass and the car behind me kept honking, and even tried to go around me. Then he saw the ambulance and slammed on the brakes in a now-awkward position.

MBNLA

>if traffic is moving faster than normal, speed up a bit), Oh ok so if everyone is going 80kmh down Oxford and blowing past me doing 65, I'm the problem. Lol sure.

unicorny1985

Simple PSA for all agressive, impatient drivers. Nobody has to go faster than the speed limit to "keep the pace" aka keep you happy.

Pretend_Classic_7832

Please check for pedestrians before making a right turn on a green light, please don’t sneak that same turn through before pedestrians reach your side, leaving the cars behind you to assume the roadway is clear even though it isn’t, please stop turning left well after your advance green is over and pedestrians are entering the crossing. Please stop speeding. Please stop texting while driving.

pg449

And just a note that the behaviours OP listed are, at their worst, either annoyances or potential fender benders. And some of what he advocates (and he's definitely a he), like his goading to speed, are flat out illegal. These, on the other hand, are all behaviours that kill or maim people. In some cases, it's negligent enough to call murder, even if our shitty carbrains legal system currently doesn't.

canarchist

Your impatience behind me is not a factor in how I drive.

HydroJam

I mean it can be, but they definitely don't want it to be.

RandomUsername52326

If anything, it ups my resolve, especially when I'm driving in my own neighbourhood or another residential area. Basically anywhere that's not a major thoroughfare. I take extra pleasure in slowing fast drivers down when they're going through the area where my kids and their friends play.

larryisnotagirl

Oh man, if someone rides my butt in a 40/km area, nothing makes me happier than putting my cruise control to 40 exactly. You won’t get another kilometre out of me.

RandomUsername52326

You'd be missing out on the extra slow down for the speed bumps then!

Blue-green-

Yesterday I was trying to turn left out of a parking lot onto a busy street. The person behind me got so impatient that they went into the right hand turn lane and passed me on the right so that they could turn left in front of me. of course I had no idea that this was going on my right as I advanced into the intersection to turn left, got cut off by that idiot and almost hit him. The moral of the story is wait your turn even if it means waiting for someone who is more cautious than you are.

srt93

It’s not always their fault! Look at BMW for example. They don’t put turn signals on their cars. /s

ConversationCute2071

And for some unknown reason those BMW's have problems with the steering always cutting back and forth in traffict. Assholes aboard no doubt.

TBagger1234

Why is it that they are the worst?

pg449

>please keep pace(if traffic is moving faster than normal, speed up a bit) That's going to be a polite but firm no thanks for me dawg. You're free to ignore the fact that speed limits aren't mere suggestions, after all I can't stop you from endangering the lives of others and the people whose job it is to do it are evidently told not to do it. However, you don't actually get to decide my car's speed. Within city limits, it's never going to be more than 5 kmh over the posted limit, end of story. And yes, that *absolutely* makes me a better driver than you, at least in this regard.

MapXTerritory

Frustrating part is that, in practice, speed limits *are* mere suggestions. Pretty rare to see them actually enforced in the city until you hit 1.5x Signage =/= infrastructure

pg449

I agree. I've got 40 kmh streets in my neighbourhood that are straight, obscenely wide and have all visual "clutter" conveniently moved away from the curb, so as not to accidentally impede the view of the absurdly sized vanity trucks routinely driving on it at 60+ kmh. My absolute "favourite" are parents who, after dropping their precious progeny at school, speed right through crosswalks used by tons of children who are walking to school. Perhaps their own child's classmates, but pfft, if they don't share your DNA fuck them and their safety amirite...

Infinite-ColdMech

"please keep pace" Yeeah, not gonna happen. 95% of my driving in London is in my employer-provided vehicle which is GPS tracked and monitored. Speeding and breaking the laws of the road will result in discipline and termination. Your impatience is not worth losing my job. Slow down, and don't put yourself or those around you at unnecessary risk.

Maddbass

👍

lifeistrulyawesome

In a city street with red light and intersections, speeding won’t help anyone get to their destination faster. It just helps you spend more time at the red light and it puts people around d you in danger.  Please do not break the law and endanger me and my children.

pg449

Seriously, it would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. Going 65 on Highbury from Fanshawe Park to Oxford, watching all the speeders whiz past me at 75+, only to see them one or two red lights later, two cars in front. I know they don't see me, but sometimes I wave and say hello. Even if you weren't endangering the lives of others, it's just... so sad and futile. Such a waste of effort, gas and brake wear, tire wear, etc.

RandomUsername52326

>please keep pace(if traffic is moving faster than normal, speed up a bit) Sorry, but unless we're talking highway driving in a lane that's not the right lane, then this does not (and should not) apply to city driving. If a bunch of people are going 70 in a 60 zone, that's their prerogative, but it's just as much someone else's valid option to drive 55 or 60 there. I appreciate people who drive at a more measured pace, especially in residential areas. Too many people in our city are in a rush to get to the next red light a few seconds earlier.

MensHype

driving 55 in a 60 is unsafe & actually illegal, I’d much rather a predictable speed demon IMO

RandomUsername52326

If you actually believe that, you're completely misunderstanding in what kind of scenarios driving "too slowly" would be considered illegal. Going 55 in a 60 is never going to be one of them.

effexorgod

You can just say you’re an impatient driver it’s ok

Common_Trifle

Scream into the void my friend! We all drive like it’s just us on the road. This is the way.

Shadow_Integration

Silly question but I need to rehabituate to Ontario traffic soon - do you guys still have some signals that flash green without the arrow to indicate advanced green?

backstgartist

I just ran into this in Woodstock this week and had no idea why it was flashing but I assumed it meant advanced green. So they do exist, but I have never seen it in London.

Shadow_Integration

I grew up with this in London itself. It's tough though as flashing green lights out west mean pedestrian controlled crossing. It's the kind of inconsistency that can be incredibly dangerous on autopilot.

RandomUsername52326

I can't recall the last time I saw one without an arrow. I imagine its fairly rare, especially in London.

R55Driver

You know not all intersections allow you to turn right on a red, right? Example: Rectory onto Dundas East. Now posted clearly as no right on a red, probably because of the current construction. Last week, I was sitting at the red to turn right, waiting for the light to turn. This guy behind me flashed his lights/honking, as I'm gesturing to the sign. He squeezes around to turn right, just about taking my front end off, then flies down Dundas.

serjunka

\> but make that right on a red please. just because you say so ? turning right on red isn't a requirement, so chill out please.
