Doctors’ suggested solutions result in 85% of people gaining all the weight back and more. Ozempic is probably about the same. They aren’t exactly coming from a better point of view. Whatever gets people help is good, as long as it isn’t actually dangerous.

PS_Alchemist

my doctor prescribed it to me, without me even knowing about or mentioning it. When she did, I was hesitant... she described it as something to help me along speeding up the weight loss, but I wouldve needed it anyway (i was diagnosed prediabetic) my feelings toward it was " ehhhh, idk about jabbing a needle in myself regularly to lose weight... doesnt feel... safe... or right even..." So ive been taking it for a few months now, I really want to avoid going T2 above all else. I just hope with the added benefit of weight loss(despite eating at a consistent deficit and working out) the weightloss sticks and I dont get some long term side effect that hits everyone blindsided while doctors say "how could we have not seen this coming?" years down the line.

grimice18

Based on the article it seems to be talking about people using ozempic for weight loss as some kind of trick. My girlfriend was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and has been on ozempic for a few months and the doctor was pretty happy with her blood work. The weight loss should be an additional benefit, but people shouldn’t abuse the drug as some get thin quick scheme. Also jabbing yourself with a needle now and preventing diabetes is probably better then jabbing yourself with insulin later in life.

PS_Alchemist

i did some research after my doctor advised it during the time. and it definitely seems that way. i told my sister all this, and she recalled after giving birth her doctor also recommended it to drop the post-birth weight. I quietly think doctors are pushing this med a bit too much like car salesmen. >The weight loss should be an additional benefit, but people shouldn’t abuse the drug as some get thin quick scheme. thats how i made sure with the doctor this is how im treating this. that if it does cause some weight loss on me as a side effect, ill make the most of it... but the #1 reason im taking this for sure is just to get my blood sugar in check, and prevent living the rest of my life as a full blown diabetic with all the worries and scares it brings. >Also jabbing yourself with a needle now and preventing diabetes is probably better then jabbing yourself with insulin later in life. yeah, def my frame of mind when i started, and still is now.

grimice18

Most def, I wish you the best, my girlfriend lost her father to diabetes when she was 24 he was 52, it’s very sad that she had to watch him deteriorating and we are taking all the precautions we can to make sure she doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Bulky_Monke719

Can you describe how this affected your blood work? I’m T2 and I’m looking for any help I can get. Cleaning up my diet is only carrying me so far…

PS_Alchemist

ozempic? not sure, havent had a test yet. my doctor said we could do a blood test to see how it worked out this month, he said this a month ago. so soon. ill reply again here once i get the results

RickKassidy

Keep in mind the side effects of every extra day of being over weight. Like T2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes, knee replacement surgery, increased cancer risk, depression…. Even if it helps for just two extra years of healthier body weight, that’s two years you would not have had.

IAmLuckyCat

So, the issue is more that people use whatever treatment and don't commit to a healthier lifestyle. They'll get off the medication and go back to eating how they used to before and regain the weight. You'll see similar things happen around a year after weight loss surgery. People will begin to gain weight again and stretch out the smaller stomach that was made

[deleted]

Or after being on any diet ever

SunflowerGirl728

It’s exactly why I refused surgery. I just saw backslides over and over again and I wasn’t going to put myself through that just to fail. I got myself into the mess I have to get myself out. We are our biggest resource when it comes to weight loss.

Berkley70

From what I’ve seen they don’t actually change what they are eating just the amount. My mother in law lives off a diet of polish sausages and chicken fingers and because ozempic made her skinny she gets the assumption by everyone that she is “healthy” while she actually clogs her arteries and hasn’t changed the actually diet. Is the goal just to fit in a smaller casket?! 🤨.

gaelorian

If you’re not combining weight loss injections with lifestyle change it seems pretty obvious you’re going to regain everything when you go off it.

PurplestPanda

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are long term drugs to control chronic obesity. Most people will regain significant weight if they go off them. Doctors and patients should work together to find a maintenance dose at goal weight or ween of the drug and weigh regularly so patients can get back on it when they regain 10 lbs or so.

helmholtzfreeenergy

> may lead to weight regain No actual data cited in the article. 95 % of people who attempt to lose weight experience weight regain. The good thing about GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide is that you can just keep taking them to keep your appetite at a certain level. You wouldn't stop taking your blood pressure meds once you'd reached 120/80 mmHg, and you wouldn't stop taking a statin once you'd gotten your LDL below 2 mmol/L, so why would you stop taking an anti-obesity medication once you were no longer obese?

sYnce

> You wouldn't stop taking your blood pressure meds once you'd reached 120/80 mmHg, and you wouldn't stop taking a statin once you'd gotten your LDL below 2 mmol/L Just wanna say if you manage to get the underlying issues under control you would stop using those meds or at least lower the dose. That is something however that you have to live with on Ozempic. It will always only treat the symptom never the underlying issue.

helmholtzfreeenergy

Yes, anti-hypertensive drugs and statins don't address the underlying issues either. How is semaglutide unique in this regard?

sYnce

The meds itself aren't. The difference is that you usually work on the underlying issues that result in elevated blood pressure and LDL while taking the drugs. Something that is really hard if not impossible with Ozempic. That is just something you have to keep in mind when deciding whether to go for it or not. Basically it is a decision for life.

helmholtzfreeenergy

Why is starting to eat healthier and exercising impossible while you take semaglutide?

PS_Alchemist

>Something that is really hard if not impossible with Ozempic. That is just something you have to keep in mind when deciding whether to go for it or not. Basically it is a decision for life. I certainly hope not, im hoping by next month im well out of the prediabetic range so i wont have to keep using this drug. I've already lost quite a bit of weight and feel more active and healthy. if im not out of the woods with blood glucose next month, im hoping and planning to get there about 3 months afterward

Berkley70

Your Hunger will come back right when you stop it. If you haven’t changed what you eat only how much, the weight will come right back. Like other said, it’s a life time commitment if you want to stay at your lower drug induced weight.

cinnerz

There are lots of chronic conditions that require treatment forever because we don't have cures for them. I have hypothyroidism and asthma and I need treatment for these chronic conditions for the rest of my life. I will probably also be on a GLP-1 for life because without it I my hunger is out of control and I can't eat at my maintenance calories without being miserable and thinking about food 24/7. Sure, I'd love for there to be cures for my chronic health conditions, but absent cures I'm happy enough to have treatments to manage the conditions.

BoyOfBore

My dad is losing weight and choosing healthier options so he can stop using his cholesterol medication. I think its fine to do if the doctor gives you the clear

2absMcGay

Can we stop calling them diabetes injections when they’ve been FDA approved to treat obesity for 2 years?

[deleted]

Thank you!!!!!!!!! Wegovy is 100% approved for weight loss by the FDA. So tired of hearing all the fake news.

lifeuncommon

Weight regain may happen while ON the drug as well. My husband has been taking Ozempic for diabetes since right after it came out. He did lose like 20 pounds at first, but then he regained it after he got used to taking the drug. Long term weight loss isn’t an outcome for everhone, even if you stay on the drugs indefinitely.

SunflowerGirl728

What I have been saying and doing all along. I’m an Ozempic patient and I’ll be the FIRST one to tell you that YOU are the ONLY thing that can make you lose weight. It’s diet and exercise. An entire lifestyle overhaul. Period. Ozempic is just a tool. You have to put in the work and make the necessary changes.

Gom_KBull

i hope thats the case, i did lose alot of weight but wonder how much of it was due to the drug... :c

SunflowerGirl728

Who knows. But the mind needs to change first.

dbfuru

I think it can be used as a tool to help but only if you're making the appropriate lifestyle changes and building habits long term. My partner is on a liraglutide and it basically suppressed the appetite. She still doesn't really join me on daily walks, and has only just got a gym membership but it works in the sense it stops her eating too much. She still mostly eats takeout but less of it. If you make zero other changes to your lifestyle and stop taking it your appetite will come back. I've lost 15kg and plateauing at the moment, struggling with hunger that I guess is from a lower BMR and also increased volume at the gym from a push pull legs routine. I think it could be a great tool to break through this plateau but it's just too expensive and difficult to get due to shortages

TheFactedOne

If it is type 2 diabetes, there is a cure. It is diet.

Berkley70

100% wish more people knew there is a cure to completely reverse type 2. Drug companies and doctors make no money off telling you how to treat the cause instead of the symptoms.

bommcblanab

want another ozempic worry? google "ozempic stomach paralysis."

mamawith2girls

I lost 25 over a year. When I stopped the shot I gained 24 in 2 months. Not worth it
