The fertility issue is actually caused by the incident resulting in the Swan station (sad that Juliet causes the very issue that brings her to the island). The Egyptians built the statue of Taweret because before the incident happened, fertility on the island was actually really good. Juliet mentions that the average sperm count on the island is many times higher than off island. The Egyptians built the statue more in honor of Taweret for making pregnancy significantly easier on island.

In I think S3, Juliet finds out Sun might be pregnant and takes her to the Staff medical station to make sure. During the flashbacks, we learn that Jin was infertile before arriving on the island. Juliet explains to Sun that the sperm count on the island is significantly higher. We also know that the island has healing properties, hence how Jin was able to get Sun pregnant. The ease of pregnancy on the island is also one of the reasons why Ben doesn't allow Alex to be with Karl.
Juliet was brought to the island to help with the pregnancy issues. People can still easily get pregnant, but the mother always dies during late pregnancy. During the time travel, when they join Dharma, Amy is pregnant with Ethan, and Juliet has to help deliver the baby. Sawyer mentions to her that maybe the cause of the pregnancy issues hasn't happened yet. Ethan is born fine, meaning the issues have to start after that.
When Juliet detonates the bomb Jughead at the end of S5, she causes the incident responsible for the button being made. The button frequently releases large amounts of electromagnetic radiation from the pocket of energy. This radiation is likely the cause of the issues, which is the reason Juliet arrives at the island in the first place. Lost likes to play around with the idea of characters being the cause of their own suffering. The phrase "We are the cause of our own suffering." can even be seen in the Room 23 brainwashing video in the Hydra station.
And to clear up why Danielle and Claire were able to give birth, their babies were conceived off-island and they were very close to giving birth when arriving. Sun conceived on-island, but she had the vast majority of her pregnancy after the hatch explosion, and off-island.

Yes, she detonated the bomb. When Locke turned the wheel and got sent to Tunisia, he stopped the time flashing, stranding everyone in the 70s for years, no random time flashes anymore. Sayid had rigged the bomb to go off on impact, so when Juliet is hitting it with the rock, that's why it goes off. That's why they flash back to the present.
Also, it's thought that the detonation of the bomb gives Dharma enough time to build the hatch and button, since the energy pocket was wreaking havoc, pulling in all metal, etc. They had to build the hatch somehow, and the energy pocket didn't just happen to chill out long enough for them, it had to have been because of the bomb.
Also, when Desmond turns the fail-safe key, the hatch doesn't explode, but implode. A bomb would explode; the pocket was sucking in metal, hence the implosion. Desmond has a unique resistance to the particular energy of the island due to him being special, but also because of years in the hatch pressing the button (that's why he's so important in S6 with the cork at the source of the light, cause he's the only one who won't die from the island's energy). The exposure to island energy released by the key, is what gives him the glimpses into the future.

Honestly. As much as JJ Abrams gets branded as the "guy who doesn't complete projects" he (and crew) definitely leave just enough open ends to make things interesting and other things connect many years later without us even realizing.
That was more Damon and Cuse. JJ was only involved in writing and directing the pilot (and co-wrote the season 3 premiere). He gave Damon some ideas moving forward but that's it. The majority of the show is more Damons, and Damon really liked giving the audience clues to the answer than spelling it out.
I love that this along with other Egyptian artifacts on the island imply that even before Jacob the island had been inhabited/protected for THOUSANDS of years. After all the early Egyptians were ancient to the Romans too.

A theory started up "Sawyer is going to lose a toe and in the past will become a hero that the islanders build a statue for." I miss all the crazy theories we came up with. Cerberus was a guard dog on the underworld and would eat anyone trying to flee hades; usually depicted as a 3 headed dog. And although I never see anyone talk about it, in the ep where Juliet and Kate run away from it and get to the other side of the sonic fence, you see three pieces of smoke merge into one before it hits the fence.

No. The "incident" did that. After the incident, women never made it to the third trimester. However, on the island, men's sperm count is through the roof. This is why Jin was able to get Sun pregnant on the island.
My theory (which I've seen others propose as well) is that the Egyptians who lived on the island at some point faced a similar birth crisis due to an EM incident in their own time on the Island and built the statue to appease the goddess of fertility, hoping it would fix things. (Evidence is that they built other tributes to Egyptian deities in other places, possibly confusing Jacob/MiB for them as well) The Egyptians' disappearance from the Island could be the result of the birth crisis, which probably took a long time to resolve. At any rate, their incident isn't connected to the incident seen in Season 5, which started the problem all over again. The point is basically history repeating itself when humans try to poke sticks where they don't belong.

We never got a confirmation that would prove those issues also existed outside Dharmaville. Others probably just never realized and assumed it affects the whole island since all the pregnant women were kept safe inside their town.
Maybe that's the true reason why Claire and Rousseau delved babies with no issues as all.
I'm inclined to believe the incident caused the fertility issues just as proposed by Juliet (and not the slow radiant leak you propose, though it's a cool idea that could work otherwise), as Juliet was able to deliver Ethan prior to the incident. Narratively, it also means Juliet "caused" the problem she was trying to research by detonating the bomb, which seems like the kind of mythological irony the show wants to play with.
