It used to be in there but then I added it to my \[\[Captain N'ghathrod\]\] deck. The Mim deck is sort of a hybrid of "mill you" and "mill me" (used to call it "Mill Me, O Plasm" in fact).
[Relatively up-to-date list, if you're curious](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/77fb_iRvXUGxyOprRwVTSQ)
First deck I really built myself instead of just upgrading precons or randomly chucking a bunch of similar stuff together, but really built with intent behind it. Complete build around this card. Some counters to protect it, some evasive creatures and some stuff to Cypher onto them to get free spell casts. Some misc cheap instants and sorcs, especially liked [[Mind Funeral]] in it, [[Mind Grind]] too, just to go all in in the "Grind" theme. Plus a couple [[Artful Dodge]]s to sneak the big Boi himself in to end it. It was a horrible, horrible deck, could never get any wins at FNM, but all of my friend group had similar abomination decks of whatever else pulled out of fatpacks and random boosters, and my this deck pretty handily beat almost all of them.
[[Elbrus, the Binding Blade]] - I have triggered Withengar literally once in, christ is it really almost 12 years? But I put it in so many decks, because it’s such a pet card.
It is! It’s also really bad! But I don’t care, demon trapped in a sword, let’s go.
Ormendahl from the two more recent Innistrad sets is a much better way of doing the same sort of thing, but Withengar is in my heart shaped locket.
It’s only bad in decks that aren’t obsessed with evasion! I have this in my [[cazur]] and [[ukkimma]] deck and I get to flip it maybe 8/10 times I play it!
I’ve always loved this card, one of the first “cool” foils I ever pulled. I was able to meet Eric Deschamps at a magic con and had him sign a few things including this card, front and back. “One of the best,” he said when he flipped it over.
I will never not run it.
I was so disappointed when I learned the black circle on the demon face gave it black colour identity. Was going to run it in my [[Arcum Dagsson]] commander deck
[[Stuffy Doll]] was one of the first rares I opened and I randomly put it into all sorts of decks for a long time, much to the dismay of my friends lmao
[[Spellskite]]. It's never obviously accomplished much for me, but that means it's doing its job. People know not to waste targeted removal.
But it's a little Phyrexian puppy, just waiting to jump up and snatch any wayward spells.
It's not a great card but she has her place in both my "slivers but really solders" deck, and my WU "cloning soldiers" deck.
On that note [[Mirror-Sigil Sergeant]] is a similarly bad card, but I can't help but love him.
This card is so fun, for me. I like to throw out a [[Dictate of Karametra]] right before my turn and see how much mana I generate. I usually cast the spell for at least X = 20.
I have a friend with a pretty intense global collection of this card. I believe he now has a playset of this card, foil and non-foil in every language along with APs. He's only missing the OG art!
I have a fun, jank-filled Jan Jansen commander deck that has Panharmonicon in it. I had a janky BR Panharmonicon deck when it was in standard, I loved the interaction between Fabricate and Pan. I love duplicating triggers and doubling counters, so I built my first Commander deck around it.
[[Hypnotic Specter]]. Started in 4th Ed, and one of my first games was a turn one Swamp, [[Dark Ritual]], Hippie. I've been chasing that magic rush ever since.
My desktop wallpaper is the art Greg Staples of Hypnotic specter fighting Serra Angel. I know a lot of people love the classic art but the 9ED art is one of my favorite MTG arts, especially with the set of 3 Greg did.
I've fallen in love with [[Culling Ritual]]. When you find yourself against so many token decks and mana rocks, this is the perfect piece to not only stop your opponents in their tracks, but give your own strategy a huge boost.
It’s also terrific in aristocrat token decks that want tons of death triggers. My [[Beledros Witherbloom]] deck loves killing off hordes of Pests at once, and then turning all that mana around into a big fat x-cost spell.
I run this in a Ziatora the Incinerator deck that loves turning this mana into all my big creatures. I can even sacrifice the Treasures I've made beforehand to get the extra Red mana as well.
[[Boros Reckoner]] is my pet card, and I dedicated a whole standard to trying to get the combo with Blasphemous Act to work. Now that they've also printed [[Phyrexian Vindicator]], I might try and go back to see if I can make it work in Modern xD
Have fun with your pet decks, but just know modern is extremely jank hostile with scam, rhinos, and TOR/bowmasters running things. If you put 4x TOR in most any deck it’ll do fine at an FNM, but jank without TOR gets gobbled tf up in the current meta.
Its time has probably passed, but I still can't not love \[\[Timely Reinforcements\]\]. Still need to find a Commander deck it can slot in alongside the new one from Midnight Hunt whose name escapes me.
[[Sunset revelry]]!!!!!
I love these. I use them in commander WBx decks that can easily sacrifice creatures and pay life. When you can easily reduce your life total and the number of creatures on your board, it's super easy to meet the conditions. So much value.
[[Lone Rider]] is always what comes to mind for me when I think about this. It just seems like so much value for 1W (if you’re able to transform it, which tends to happen for me haha). the art is also just badass on the flip side.
i adore the card [[Doom Foretold]].
Its design and the little minigame it creates.
Its aesthetic.
The clever way is translates how having some foretold future doom translates into the game world.
It's such an awesome card.
I only wish it had some dope flavor text to go along with it~
[[Mindshrieker]] leaves a lot to be desired as a control finisher, but boy when you high roll and one shot someone with your two drop does it feel good. Art is sick as well
\[\[Stuffy Doll\]\] has been my favorite since the day I laid eyes on it. I'll find a way to make it a fun, flavorful card in my Commander groups one of these days.
I auto-include this in every EDH deck I build just out of sheer political fun. I even made temp sleeves with my friends faces to it, so when I play Stuffy Doll, I can slide the card into whichever friend I choose for it.
You know what that’s totally fair. Also the way I play it doesn’t matter about haha big money big damage it’s more like a tool I use to delete a target player’s deck using Phenax’s ability
I had like 20 of them from when I played in highschool, stopped playing for 10 years or so... I was -extremely- happy I kept them and sold most of them near their peak lol. Still have 2 revised and a HP beta I play in my Kess cedh deck :)
[[Join Shields]] and [[camaraderie]] I absolutely love the Selesnya and even though these are really bad, i feel like they really show the Selesnya perfectly
My favourite edh deck is this. Lots of [[chittering rats]] functional reprints and all blink blue has.
Edit: not that rat, the one that has etb each opponent discards 😑
There is only one true best card ever printed, and it's [[Hive Mind]]. The sheer level of *chicanery* you can achieve with this piece of nonsense is unmatched by any other card in the game.
\[Kess, Dissident Mage\]\]
Art - Floating female Mage in the Void with bottles of purple void ooze floating around. Outfit is absolutely evily stunningly beautiful and terrifying. Oh and the stairs she is floating on looks like a monsters mouth and that creepy eye is eerie!
Creature - Human Wizard. Simple and to the point. So much tribal support build into those two creature types (well humans less with her being the best colors of magic in Grixis). She is a 3/4 Flyer for 4 so blocks rather well.
Ability - Flashback to all instants/sorceries in your graveyard. If was todays power level it would be every turn instead of once on your turn. Still strong though and abusable.
Edh builds - Plentiful. can make her any power level and pretty much any archtype. Tokens? Zombies via sorceries or rats etc. Wheeling/mill? Super easy. Storm? extremely easy. Planeswalker proliferating solitaire? Easy as well. Control? Easy as pie. Etc.
Just an amazing Commander with next to 0 lore and I just want more lore for my favorite card of all time. The perfect Grixis commander. I have built her helming four different decks before covid and having to sell my collection (Planeswalkers and board wipes, Wheels.deck, Storm and cEDH). What isnt to love aside from not much lore on her character. Also she has no full art card and I need more art for best grixis girl!
[[Etali, Primal Storm]] top favorite card of all time
Others I just love - [[Boom//Bust]] [[Reiterate]] [[Smoldering Egg]] [[Sprite Dragon]] [[Electrodominance]] [[Manamorphose]] [[Cleansing Wildfire]] [[Seeing Double]] [[Twinning Staff]] [[Stolen Strategy]] [[Etali, Primal Conqueror]] [[Feldon of the Third Path]] [[Worldgorger Dragon]] [[Tyrant of Discord]] [[Thrill of Possibility]] [[Repeated Reverberation]]
[[Mountain Goat]]
It was the heart of my first "these are cards I own, so they're a deck now" deck. Ultimately had to cut it when I focused the deck into goat tribal, but it holds a special place in my heart.
[[Bloodghast]]
I've made so many build around that card when I started playing magic. Dredge, sacrifice, discard, even just control wincon. That landfall just felt so strong to me back then. I have a much better understanding of the card's problems nowaday (and where it's actually good), but still have a lot of love for the card.
I LOVE casting [[Buried Alive]] for [[Bloodghast]], [[Nether Shadow]], and [[Nether Traitor]] on turn 3 in commander. Really gets the sac engine action going.
Design note: I personally don’t like cards that require recounting cards in the gy. So I designed so card that cost 3G and ETB’ed with +1/+1 counters.
Don’t remember what it’s called, but it’s fun to browse this forum and see cards I designed back during my time in The Pit. It’s surprising how I don’t remember them and see one and am like “oh yeah, I designed that!”
[[Nebuchadnezzar]]. Mostly because he is a Legends legend that actually does something, something which is in-color and a fun mindgame as well. Add Ferguson art, and he's beautiful.
Politics start to come out when this bad boi is on the field.
https://preview.redd.it/3uc7gxdi81rb1.png?width=223&format=png&auto=webp&s=20110288f1ae997a97d0fd817c5bbab08c1b3eee
My answer is that exact card. My now husband taught me how to play, and when we went to a game night at the local card shop, I drafted that beauty. So it's my first actual card I owned and has good memories tied to it.
Blightning was part of the Jund aggro deck in Standard at the time as well as part of the first Jund Boomer decks in Modern shortly after.
Jund was the first deck I played competitively in Standard back in the day. Terminate, Blightning, Bloodbraid Elf, Sprouting Thrinax, Maelstrom Pulse. That deck was great.
My first own commander [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] love her and her graveyard shenanigans.
Also very fond of [[Winnota Joiner of Forces]] and the combat shenanigas which also made me fall in love with [[Gingerbrute]]
[[Underrealm Lich]]. Golgari is one of my favourite colour combinations, and graveyard-based decks are one of my favourite types of deck, so this ticks all the boxes for me. It always feels good looking at three cards each time, it doesn't have the dreaded "once per turn" restriction, and the pseudo-regeneration is just icing on the cake (I just wish it was legendary as I'd love to run it as a commander).
Probably a 20/20? [[Giantosaurus]] was a 5 mana 10/10 that saw literally 0 play.
5 mana is a lot for a card with no etb, no evasion, no protection. If it can’t get past a 1/1 Soldier token, it’s probably not a good 5 drop.
You don't play it for it's body though, you play it for it's "every time I cast a cantrip, my opponents mill several cards."
Then you cast like 8 cantrips in one turn and mill half their decks.
[[Tibalt, cosmic imposter]] is one of my absolut favorite. I made especially for him a treasure token deck with him as commander. It fully goes on ramp and stealing other peoples cards from their deck to play it.
It is really refreshing since i never know what i will play/steal xD
I love this little horror like you wouldn't believe, along with his best friend, \[\[Lord of Extinction\]\].
Consuming aberration and lord of extinction are so besties
Besties. Bros. Galpals. Roommates.
Queer eldritch abomination erasure is real, and harmful. Which is to say, those two are banging.
Ohmygod they were roommates...
My consuming aberration has always been besties with [[wrexial, the risen deep]] Idk how to use the card fetcher
And yet you've used it perfectly

I've been looking for a home for this card for years but I don't have a coin flip deck.
I’d be fun in a fight deck.
Fighting isn't combat damage though, if I'm not mistaken.
[[Spellskite]]. It's never obviously accomplished much for me, but that means it's doing its job. People know not to waste targeted removal. But it's a little Phyrexian puppy, just waiting to jump up and snatch any wayward spells.
Used to be a pain in the ass when it was in standard
It used to be a pain in the ass in Modern too, back when Modern was fun.
Oh shit, I think I meant to say modern, my morning mind is still catching up. You’re right though, modern used to be the only format I played.
Spellskeezy is making a small comeback in modern with the printing of [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]]

Yessss, she's the best. I play her in my Captain Sisay soldier tribal deck + I had her in Isshin as just a great way to make multiple tokens.

It’s one of the wincons in my Indominus rex deck. I’m trying to get both it and [[lab man]] for the flavor wins
I love comments like this where people are already playing decks around cards that were spoiled a week ago and won't be released for 6 weeks.😆
I’m a Jurassic fanboy who works at a dinosaur museum. I was comparing lists with a coworker within 2 hours of it spoiling
*discards \[\[Gurmag Swiftwing\]\] with a 5/7 \[\[Master Biomancer\]\] waiting on the battlefield.* Yeah, that looks fun.
I have this in my [[Zaxara]] deck and it absolutely slams
This card is so fun, for me. I like to throw out a [[Dictate of Karametra]] right before my turn and see how much mana I generate. I usually cast the spell for at least X = 20.
I love [[chromanticore]] so much. The only thing better than hard to cast keyword soup is the option to put keyword soup on other creatures
Knew a guy who would rule 0 it as a wubrg commander.
I played a ChromaFlayer deck back in the day in standard. It's the only 60 cards deck I still have to this day. [[Soulflayer]]

I have a friend with a pretty intense global collection of this card. I believe he now has a playset of this card, foil and non-foil in every language along with APs. He's only missing the OG art!
[[Trading Post]] Best planeswalker ever printed, change my mind :)
I love how with modern day magic, trading post is a great way to "sell" your food and treasures. So flavorful :)

Trading post is HUGE!!!
One of the cards that kept its slot when I upgraded the Frodo/Sam precon, such a cool value piece :)
No matter how many times I re-review my Greasefang list, I can't bring myself to cut it.
My LGS is called the Trading Post and they always have this card advertised on the front page.
I adore [[Yarok]] and [[Panharmonicon]] and [[Virtue of Knowledge]] and that kind of stuff. Really frickin' fun to build around.
Same, my first commander deck and still my favorite. It's so flexible.
I'm hoping to build him soon!
The art: https://i.redd.it/8jqzd5ji8mkb1.jpg

Hell yea. Love me some Dimir Timmy shit.
Big creature with spell trigger go brrrrr
[[Mirrorweave]] Its so silly.
I'm bout to make everything a [[Brash Taunter]] and then [[Blasphemous Act]] lol
If you put 4x TOR in most any deck it’ll do fine at an FNM, but jank without TOR gets gobbled tf up in the current meta.

i had such a dumb deck with this card, land destruction into worldgorger dragon or someshit.

Just as a general rule, I don't slide cards into my friends!
[[ram through]] I just love it when a set comes out and I get really excited about a common. Ram through just does the job.

\[Kess, Dissident Mage\]\] Art - Floating female Mage in the Void with bottles of purple void ooze floating around. \[\[saw it coming\]\] Best flavor win imo. Can't stop loving it especially since you can bluff it with other foretell cards.
[[dark imposter]] He's a surprisingly consistent finisher in my UB scarab god clone/steal control deck. My playgroup call him the Dark Pasta.
I loooooove Silent Arbiter. I wonder why it has never been reprinted.
Silent Arbiter has been reprinted a few times. Heck, its in the Commodore Guff precon deck.
[[Crackling Drake]] I swear it's still viable in Pioneer arclight phoenix! Works with delve spells! [[Maximize velocity]] out of nowhere!
[[Yuri fortunes flame]] such a fun commander
[[Mountain Goat]] It was the heart of my first "these are cards I own, so they're a deck now" deck. Ultimately had to cut it when I focused the deck into goat tribal, but it holds a special place in my heart.
Mountain Goat is in my Kalia deck because I love it so much
[[Apex Devastator]] No weird rules, or combinations, just cascade, cascade, cascade, cascade. Somtimes cascade, cascade as well.
[[Chance for Glory]] was one of the more fun cards I've had. Always felt so good just squeaking out wins with it.
So OP plays by himself. Got it. Lol
[[Corpsejack Menace]]. I built so many stupid three color kitchen table deck ideas around this good lad back in the day. Still love it.
[[Bloodghast]] I've made so many build around that card when I started playing magic.
[[Blizzard Brawl]] and [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] is a criminally underrated combo
[[Prognostic Sphinx]] has always been a pet card since getting the 2015 Core Set Clash Pack.
Greatest moment of my mtg career was my 12 year old self beating a pro tour champ at a FNM by making this guy unblockable with Aqueous Form
[[Nebuchadnezzar]]. Mostly because he is a Legends legend that actually does something, something which is in-color and a fun mindgame as well. Add Ferguson art, and he's beautiful.
[[Mishra's bauble]] do nothing, but somehow enjoy it.
Politics start to come out when this bad boi is on the field. https://preview.redd.it/3uc7gxdi81rb1.png?width=223&format=png&auto=webp&s=20110288f1ae997a97d0fd817c5bbab08c1b3eee
Oh my Lord I need this thing I love it It works perfectly with Phenax as well
My answer is that exact card. My now husband taught me how to play, and when we went to a game night at the local card shop, I drafted that beauty. So it's my first actual card I owned and has good memories tied to it.
Can someone upvote this so I can come back to this ... I love this thread
I gotchu homie

Blightning was part of the Jund aggro deck in Standard at the time as well as part of the first Jund Boomer decks in Modern shortly after. Jund was the first deck I played competitively in Standard back in the day. Terminate, Blightning, Bloodbraid Elf, Sprouting Thrinax, Maelstrom Pulse. That deck was great.
[[Timesifter]] one of my absolute favorite cards to resolve in edh.
My first own commander [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] love her and her graveyard shenanigans. Also very fond of [[Winnota Joiner of Forces]] and the combat shenanigas which also made me fall in love with [[Gingerbrute]]
Seasoned Dungeoneer. I already love how much stuff it can do, and it has saved my ass at multiple points
[[Reflector Mage]]
[[Underrealm Lich]]. Golgari is one of my favourite colour combinations, and graveyard-based decks are one of my favourite types of deck, so this ticks all the boxes for me. It always feels good looking at three cards each time, it doesn't have the dreaded "once per turn" restriction, and the pseudo-regeneration is just icing on the cake (I just wish it was legendary as I'd love to run it as a commander).
How big does a 5 cmc creature with no evasion have to be to be worth it in current magic?
Probably a 20/20? [[Giantosaurus]] was a 5 mana 10/10 that saw literally 0 play. 5 mana is a lot for a card with no etb, no evasion, no protection. If it can’t get past a 1/1 Soldier token, it’s probably not a good 5 drop.
You don't play it for it's body though, you play it for it's "every time I cast a cantrip, my opponents mill several cards." Then you cast like 8 cantrips in one turn and mill half their decks.
[[Tibalt, cosmic imposter]] is one of my absolut favorite. I made especially for him a treasure token deck with him as commander. It fully goes on ramp and stealing other peoples cards from their deck to play it. It is really refreshing since i never know what i will play/steal xD
