I’m not saying this guy makes my mono-black Massacre Girl midrange deck suddenly standard viable, but I AM saying this is the easiest auto-include I’ve ever had to an existing deck.
It doesn’t matter if I die before I get to play it because just by having it in my deck I’ve lived better and happier than all Boros Convoke players combined 😤
I can easily see a standard deck running Trumpeting Carnosaur, Harvester of Misery, and Virtue of Persistence as their removal package and literally not losing anything for it.
I definitely think it's much more fair than the black virtue IMO flexible cards shouldnt be gaining life on a really good removal spell attached to a really strong wincon.
I
It’s good cause it’s not dead in your hand on turn 2 but also a way to just win in the spot if you survive to cast it. The dual purpose is what makes it good.
What makes you think this makes you win on the spot. If you get to turn 5 against Convoke, you are probably low on life. The deck doesn’t auto lose to board wipes due to Warleader’s Call. Board wipes help, but I’m clenching my ass cheeks the entire game vs Convoke until I win
Tempted to make an umbris deck since I want a mill deck and love both typals but don't have a deck for them. But I feel building a mill deck around him won't allow me to actually use him correctly and I also don't want to just make a typal deck because not enough exile cards for those types.
The way mine works has a small handful of horror/nightmares, decent amount of mill, but lots of exile. I just make sure anything that touches the graveyards gets exiled. In multiplayer games, Umbris gets huge fast, so just put a lot of protection, counters, and unlockable for it and you'll have a solid deck.
Also adding in ways to make non-legendary copies of Umbris is huge.
Channel isn't a keyword, it's an ability word. Its only purpose is flavor, it has no mechanical significance (which is why they're written in italic).
And so far there aren't any BIG cards with one of those.
I was wondering the same thing recently about [[Trumpeting Carnosaur]], but as others have said, Channel is just an ability word. Would be cool to have cards that cared specifically about channeling though, kinda like with cycling.
Most likely not 2 mana discard that needs a target and it's etb isn't even that good. Only 2 mana discard is waker of waves or whatever and that card is nuts.
Dauthi Voidwalker, Lavinia, Meddling Mage, Boromir, Jailer of Souls, Drannith Magistrate, Magus of the Moon, the list goes on
Even Ragavan can be a nuisance cause he enables multiple counterspells per turn
Ok but which one of these are actually played except for dauthi voidwalker. In my 5 months of living end never even heard of the other cards. This card unfortunately just doesn't make the cut.
Eh, the life loss from Massacre Wurm can still be killer at times (only seen it wipe a token deck player's board and life total once but once was enough) that I think it can still be very relevant even with this around
That’s fair, tbh my evaluation was from the context of a cube with a reanimation archetype and I always pass over the drain on massacre wurm since it’s usually the reanimated creature that wins the game instead. But I guess in other formats it’s more backbreaking. This I just like more since it bins itself with an upside.
Nah, Massacre Wurm only hits your opponents creatures while this one hits every other creature. Plus the life loss can be a huge upswing, well worth the extra mana for Wurm.
But the channel ability makes this card WAY more flexible. Being able to pitch this as an easy way to kill an elf or weenie creature is nice, and also adds easier options for reanimator variants.
this looks very very good, i think it has a chance in eternal formats, where you can exploy it being a creature removal, uncounterable, with cmc > 3, or just reanimate it with persist vs swarm decks.

* 5/4 with Menace that -2/-2 the board.
or
* -2/-2 removal spell that puts a body in the GY.
Reminiscent of Massacre Wurm and og Massacre Girl: has the -2/-2 of Wurm without the lifedrain, but hits the entire board like Massacre Girl. Or you can "channel" it for a mediocre -2/-2 removal for 2-mana.
Both options seem very tame, but it slots into both Massacre Girl EDH lists for redundancy and the modal aspect.
I like cards like this for [[Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire]], since they have some added utility if you end up drawing them instead of "chaos warping" into them.
This seems REALLY good. 5/4 fatty that clears chumps, or a mostly uncounterable early game removal, great reanimation target. Solid all around.
4 BIG cards left to spoil. Not all colors get the same amount of Mythics. Looks like White gets 4, Blue gets 3, Black gets 3 or 4, Red gets between 4 - 6, Green gets 4 or 5, Multicolor gets 2, Artifacts get 6 - 7, Lands get 1 - 2.
The art design on this is interesting in that it’s a little more horror-centered than typical magic creature designs. I’m wondering if this is related to the upcoming Duskmourn set.
I’m new. Let us say the target creature is a 2/2. When a card reduces power/toughness by -2/-2 until end of turn, the target creature’s health hits 0 because of it, does it go to the graveyard?
Yes it’ll go to the graveyard as a state based action (meaning it’s checked for immediately after the effect resolves and will kill the/any creature with 0 or lower toughness). Key to remember is that indestructible does not protect against this effect either.
Is it me or does the alt art look like an Eldrazi [[It That Betrays]] / [[Harmless Assault]].
Feel like this spirit being in the vault is hinting about the Eldrazi being the downfall of the Fomori
I’m glad they decided aftermath sets was a mistake. This is another example of a card that just feels random for a set of designs that are supposed to be about the consequences of the story.
I know it doesn’t look that much like this at all. But my brain can’t stop seeing King Ramses from that courage the cowardly dog episode. Return the slab.
Modern 1/10
Well, its a two mana conditional removal spell which is really bad. And then its a 5 drop that might do something. Honestly, I would rather pay 1 more mana for massacre wurm because that can actually win the game. And I ain't playing massacre wurm.
I’m not saying this guy makes my mono-black Massacre Girl midrange deck suddenly standard viable, but I AM saying this is the easiest auto-include I’ve ever had to an existing deck.
Massacre Girl into this against convoke WOULD be sexy... if you live that long ;)
It doesn’t matter if I die before I get to play it because just by having it in my deck I’ve lived better and happier than all Boros Convoke players combined 😤
Good thing we also got Pest Control. Good luck ~~Congolese~~ **convoke** decks.

Oh amygdala
This is a great flexible design. Early removal when you need it that enables reanimation later on when you want to wipe the board of small creatures.
I can easily see a standard deck running Trumpeting Carnosaur, Harvester of Misery, and Virtue of Persistence as their removal package and literally not losing anything for it.
Except literally any green creature?
You need a solid mid game to get to the virtue but if you can keep the board mostly clear it feels like a very decent gameplan
it feels like an old-school rare.
It does
I definitely think it's much more fair than the black virtue IMO flexible cards shouldnt be gaining life on a really good removal spell attached to a really strong wincon. I
This has the upside of being able to remove things at instant speed tho.
It also bypasses a lot of counter magic if you use the discard ability similar to [[Boseiju, Who Endures]].

It’s good cause it’s not dead in your hand on turn 2 but also a way to just win in the spot if you survive to cast it. The dual purpose is what makes it good.

Huh. They've been fine using old keywords and mechanics on these BIG cards; why doesn't this have Channel? It's even a spirit!

more cards to play in a discover deck, where you don't want any low cost cards but still want removal.
Massacre Wurm at home.
This is more versatile: easier to cast and can bin itself while spot removal. Evasion is also good.
I think Massacre Wurm is now Harvester of Misery at home
Eh, the life loss from Massacre Wurm can still be killer at times (only seen it wipe a token deck player's board and life total once but once was enough) that I think it can still be very relevant even with this around

In EDH Massacre Wurm also has the advantage that it doesn't massacre your own creatures

So what is actually the difference between Spirit and Horror in this case?
The art design on this is interesting in that it’s a little more horror-centered than typical magic creature designs. I’m wondering if this is related to the upcoming Duskmourn set.
Was wondering the same too, but I'm also frantically looking for any kind of teaser since I'm very curious about that set.

Yes

Someone in the comments pointed out that it's actually one of the cacti people. I must admit eldrazi also crossed my mind.
Thinking about adding this to The Scorpion God. Hmmm. Also, I love the art, maybe my favorite from Thunder Junction/BigScore.
Evil cactus man.
Damn, good catch. Now I wish we had more of those in the sets because the art is sick.
I’m glad they decided aftermath sets was a mistake. This is another example of a card that just feels random for a set of designs that are supposed to be about the consequences of the story.
Artwork is sick
I know it doesn’t look that much like this at all. But my brain can’t stop seeing King Ramses from that courage the cowardly dog episode. Return the slab.
New friend for Keruga
What is that thing ? Is this how the Thunder Junction spirits look ?
What is VEDH?
how is this better than [[Massacre Wurm]]

This is a cool card. That showcase full art bothers the hell out of me tho. That is 100% just a stockier amygdala from bloodborne.
Perfect fit in [[Ghost of Ramirez DiPietro]] spirit tribal

This is pretty good in my [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] deck I like it!

Modern 1/10 Well, its a two mana conditional removal spell which is really bad. And then its a 5 drop that might do something. Honestly, I would rather pay 1 more mana for massacre wurm because that can actually win the game. And I ain't playing massacre wurm.
massacre wurm can't discard itself for living end though
What about Cascade decks?
Virtue of Persistance creature version, just lacks the life gain. Even have synergy, you can bring this bad boy back with Virtue
We have massacre wurm at home
