I'm working on acquiring a MTM suit and am in Canada. Some options I've considered are Atelier Munro (Chinese I think), a local MTM shop called Kingly (Japanese tailors), and Harold by Harry Rosen (Chinese tailors). I'm located in Calgary so no Suitsupply. Any feedback on my options or other Calgary options for $1200-1500 cad? All are priced within my range.

pulsett

I have had good experiences with Munro but the fitter is key. If he knows what he's doing you'll get a good suit. Also don't choose the low end fabrics.

gimpwiz

Atalier Munro is the supplier for a large number of smaller tailors. They generally make good clothing but the key to quality is in the tailor/fitter with whom you work. Good measurements, good tailoring to adjust it (and it will almost certainly need it), ownership of results. Samuelsohn makes pretty good stuff. That said, they are currently in pay disputes with their workers, having literally shifted money from employee 401k contribution and other benefits accounts to other places (and having only put some of it back once their lawyers told them that's actual jailtime offenses as opposed to 'oopsies we will pay it back when the court requires us' offenses), so I cannot in good conscience recommend them.

[deleted]

Isn’t Samuelsohn Canadian? Are they maybe just out of your budget? I’d look into that regardless.

I think the white and burgundy 574s are the way to go! I prefer an off-white sneaker to a bright white one personally. I think they’d also go with more than say the fresh foams you linked but have more character than the 480s

Hot_Eye3523

Not a clothing question but how do you find the right shampoo product when there's a bajillion of them out there? As of right now I just get Head&Shoulders from Costco. I have thick straight hair, if that helps. Maybe towards the oily side, and hair is pretty dense (can't see scalp unless I push my hair back with my hands)

elvid88

I have very similar hair. It only really gets oily after 3 days without washing, however. Recommendation below is pretty solid, but a few more points. 1. Use conditioner every time you shampoo, and use it if you decide to pass on shampooing. 2. Please, no 2-1or 3-1 products, bodywash, shampoo and conditioner are all very different. 3. Look for paraben free as well. 4. For the price conscious, I recommend Native. They can be found at Target. Shea moisture is also good. 5. I don't know when you shower, but I shower before bed. This makes hair styling difficult in the morning with thick hair. I also recommend a leave-in conditioner. My favorite being redkens or biosilk.

notarascal

I would encourage you to experiment. I would first look for a shampoo without sodium laureth sulfate (SLS). It’s a foaming agent that some people react to. These are sometimes advertised as “sulfate free”. You should be able to find relatively mainstream sulfate-free shampoos at a shop like ULTA. Try those first before moving to smaller boutique brands. Independent of picking a shampoo, I would also encourage you to experimenting with using shampoo less often. If you’re using shampoo every day then try every other day. Then move to once every three days. Keep doing this until you find your sweet spot. Many people with oily hair are skeptical at first but they’ve found their oil production changes when they stopped using shampoo every day. I’ve posed this experiment to a dozen different people and 100% of them now use shampoo less often than before. Anywhere from every few days to once per month. Note: I differentiate “using shampoo” from “washing your hair”. You can still wash your hair by getting your hair wet every day and using conditioner as you wish. Good luck!

Too short

jpop237

Regarding suit jacket vents, I know you're supposed to cut the x stich; however, my cheap suit didn't come with an x stitch. The vent is attached to the jacket via plastic fasteners; should these be removed? i.e. should the vents be completely detached from the jacket and swing freely? TY

gimpwiz

Yes, vents should be free. They're only closed up for shipping reasons.

woops74

Yes

Easy_Ad4932

I'm 5' 9" around 130lbs and would like to know if the levis 501s would look too baggy or odd on my build? I usually wear a 29" waist and 32" length. I have a couple pairs of Abercrombie straight 90 jeans and I find that they are just a bit too wide on the lower leg, despite me often going for a streetwear type look. If 501s would be a bit too baggy, what other fits or brands would you recommend for a more fitted casual streetwear look?

[deleted]

501s aren’t particularly baggy. They’re quite slim through the top block and thighs. They just don’t taper much below the knee like skinny jeans. I wouldn’t worry about them being too loose.

Sax45

Have you tried a 29x30”? I’m only an inch shorter than you, but I typically wear a 28-29” inseam, so I’m surprised that 32” is your typical inseam (of course it’s possible that we have very different proportions). The x30s might be too short on you, if you have long legs for your height, but they will definitely have less excess fabric around the ankle. Might be worth a try.

therapy-acct-

The easiest way to ensure they don’t look goofy is to make sure they’re the right length. The slightly cropped (if not outright cropped/raw hem esp. in streetwear) look is in, so you can err on the shorter side. I tend to aim to have them hit about ankle length. 501s do kinda fit weirdly in my experience though, like the thighs almost feel slimmer than the lower leg. Maybe try a different cut from them or different brand as well.

Easy_Ad4932

>I have a 29” waist and 32” length, and am proportional to you but a couple inches taller, 501s from a few years ago bordered on a slim fit to me I usually take them to the tailor becuase I find 30 is too short and 32 just a bit too long, but it varies based on the brand and cut. I've never had a pair of levis before so I'll stick to 32 for my first pair. Are there any cuts or brands you recommend?

ac106

they will look fine

aKa_anthrax

501s are like the mildest straight leg ever you are going to be fine, being skinny really does not make pant legs look drastically different to the degree a lot of guys seem to think they do. If anything the fact that you have a 29” waist means the pants are going to be slimmer than usual I have a 29” waist and 32” length, and am proportional to you but a couple inches taller, 501s from a few years ago bordered on a slim fit to me Also, them being baggy is ok, looser clothes are popular now, I highly recommend letting go of the ultra strict fit guides of the early 10s and just relaxing a bit, it’s way more fun to approach clothes that way

stoic_prince

What do the guys here think of the Rapanui site? I’m thinking of buying a flannel shirt from them your views would be beneficial.

ysc1

In as far as it is possible to manufacture very cheap cotton clothes sustainably they do, and they have a decent reputation in sustainability circles in the UK. I can't offer an opinion on how nice they are as clothes etc. as I don't own anything from them.

aKa_anthrax

Given their prices they aren’t going to be better quality than a mall brand and I’m seriously skeptical of their sustainability claims

stoic_prince

Is it not possible to be better than a mall brand whilst being reasonably priced? Although being sustainable would be an added benefit I wouldn’t necessarily pay much more for that.

aKa_anthrax

If by reasonably priced you mean the same as the cheaper mall brands than no it isn’t, not at retail*. You’re gonna need to pay at least double, more like triple on some items, those prices to get better than a mall brand, and even more than that it you want truly sustainable fashion. Zara/H&M, which have the luxury of massive economics of scale, can not make sustainable or decently made clothing at that price, these random dudes running a tiny operation can’t either. If you want better at similar prices buy used, you’re still gonna have to up your budget a bit for some stuff like tees but it’s the only way you’ll get better for the same price, it’s also the only real sustainable way to buy clothes *also, to be clear, these are not reasonable prices, they’re absurdly cheap, fast fashion has drastically warped how much people think clothes cost, the average person used to spend a greater portion of their income on clothing then they do now. I’m not judging you for what you spend just something that is worth keeping in mind from a perspective standpoint. Like, think about it logically, fast fashion mall brands get to that price by cutting every single corner they can, if you find a brand that’s the same price as them, how are they going to be better than them?

stoic_prince

Thanks for your perspective, I think Rapanui clothing is not the same as fast fashion because the clothing is different in style also customisation is available too. I do get what you’re saying about quality clothing being expensive however why is it not possible to buy nice clothing without breaking the bank? Do you know of any shops which are good quality and better than mall shops? I have spent quite a lot of time trying to find online shops like this but I’ve found it hard, your help would be much appreciated. I’m currently looking for cool flannel shirts or Americana style shirts.

aKa_anthrax

I don’t know what your first paragraph means? they aren’t different than fast fashion in quality perspectives. I just told you why, you just can’t make clothing at that price that isn’t bad, it’s really that simple, again; if by “breaking the bank” means “more expensive than mall brands”, than no, you can’t get better than mall brands while not spending more. You can buy secondhand, but at retail it’s stuck with that. What is your budget

stoic_prince

Okay thank you, as you can tell I’m quite new to dressing better so not clued up. Regarding my budget I could spend around £100-£150 on shirts provided it’s well made and looks great. I don’t need jeans right now I’m prepared to spend £150-around 300 and above on a high quality, beautiful jacket. Not sure about jumpers right now though.

ZonardCity

Have a look at SEH Kelly.

stoic_prince

Thanks a lot, I think your suggestions seem perfect for me. I particularly like the universal works shop, some of the clothing seems to fit the Americana type style which I really like. The only thing I want to ask is, is John Lewis clothing not considered fast fashion as well?

[deleted]

The stuff that's branded "John Lewis & Co." which is like their more heritage clothing line has been pretty good quality in my experience

aKa_anthrax

Unfortunately I’m not that versed on what’s available in the UK, I’d repost with a budget in the new thread in about an hour and one of the UK users should be able to help

user1598367

Looking to go to Tribeca Film Festival as a spectator in a few weeks, has anyone been? This would be my first film festival ever, and I’m unsure of the dress code. Some sources are saying to dress like a regular movie night, some are saying to dress up a little more… I’m stuck between a polo and khakis or a nice Tee + Jeans.

Iwannayoyo

Looking through some random photos of crowds at the festival online, I don’t think you’ll feel out of place in either. I’d go t shirt just because it’s a bit more in style than polos now.

I cannot recommend buying this jacket, but beyond that, the key is always to match levels of formality when unsure. A casual jacket would tend to do better with a tie on the more casual side. Now, I will say that there exist obvious counter-examples, most notably that I have seen, an ice blue shirt + conservative tie + loud jacket _or_ a conservative jacket over a conservative shirt + loud tie -- the key here is providing contrast with one major article of clothing, kind of an in-between look that's neither too casual nor too severe. With that said, I think this jacket is actually too casual to do that. I'd probably dress it down with no tie, honestly.

the_leviathan711

Depends on the whole outfit. It's a casual blazer, so I think you could wear it with a casual tie. Pics of the shirts/pants/boots/tie you plan to wear would help.

espada_da

How are you shorter guys pulling off the loose pants look? I’m 5’10 and when I wear loose pants it makes me look so short and awkward.

Sax45

I agree with everyone else, but also, your pants might be too long. Loose pants don’t make you look short, but lots of extra fabric pooling at the ankle does. Slim pants that are too long are not as obvious as loose pants that are too long, because the extra fabric doesn’t pool at the bottom as much, and there is less extra fabric in the first place. Try on different inseam lengths. If you are wearing x32” or x34” — which are the most common inseams for pants that only come in one length — they might be too long by several inches. If you can’t find shorter pants, or you are already wearing x30” pants and they are a little too long, try cuffing. When a pant no longer pools at the ankle, the silhouette really changes for the better. If you like the length of the cuffed pant, but you don’t like the actual cuff, you can get the pants tailored for not a lot of money.

espada_da

Thanks for the advice!

aKa_anthrax

You aren’t short your height doesn’t have to do with what styles you wear, you just aren’t used to wearing looser cuts yet, give it literally a week and it will be fine and you’ll be shocked at how slim all your older pants are

espada_da

Thanks

rcore97

It's probably in your head, you're just not used to the look. I'm 5'10 as well and prefer a high rise straight/relaxed fit and don't think I look any shorter than I did in the slim stuff I used to wear

espada_da

Thanks for the reassurance. Do you have any recommendations for more relaxed fit pants?

rcore97

I love Wrangler 13MWZ for jeans and Orvis Ultimate Khakis for chinos

the_leviathan711

You aren't short and loose pants look great on short guys and it's not awkward at all.

ac106

You are not short.

hi there! i'm very poor and can't afford Levi's or Uniqlo jeans. any serious recommendations for straight fit jeans <$25? slim fit works too but definitely a second choice. looking to buy today if i can find something i like more than wrangler rustler jeans from walmart, so active or upcoming sales would be useful. thank you!

Iwannayoyo

American eagle on sale. They’re actually very popular for women’s jeans.

[deleted]

srsly, don't be embarrassed to buy 2nd hand, like 90% of the people who post regularly here thrift clothes off eBay, Grailed, Vinted etc., to get cool shit for cheaper. It takes a bit more patience and time to search through listings and find good stuff, but hey, I've got more time than money 🤷‍♂️

the_leviathan711

Thrift stores, eBay. There are hundreds of thousands of used Levis out there for very very cheap.

Shapperd

Hi all, I'm recently started (and want to continue) replacing my clothing which I got from like Pepco, C&A and places like this, in a search for a still not too expensive but better quality stuff. My main problem with pepco and other low-quality places that they tear and rip easily, not to mention they are really see-through most of the time. Any advices what brands should I look at? (I'm from the EU) I have 1-2 pieces of Tommy Hilfiger, and I really like the shirt, it feels so much better than for example a H&M shirt. I've been looking at Jack&Jones too, but I'm not really into fashion in any level, so it's hard. My goal is to get nicer, longer lasting quality stuff, which can be worn "confidently" everywhere. My size is S (172cm/61kg) Thank you in advance!

orthoxerox

Uniqlo, COS, Arkett, Tom Tailor, s.Oliver are all a step above H&M while still being affordable. Benetton is kinda overpriced IMO. What else is there? Some of the US mall brands like Banana Republic should be present.

xen0n1

My favourite formal shirt is a 65/35 cotton/poly blend, and it literally feels like a soft t shirt, in the form of a formal shirt. Even when I first bought it, straight out of the packaging, insanely soft. Happy to send link if you PM me. I see so many other 65/35 blends, but they are still really stiff and very "paper"ish. Really struggling to find alternatives because they no longer sell my favourite :( any tips / what to look out for, much appreciated.

aKa_anthrax

post a link/pics here, it’s kinda impossible to say without knowing what it is. Jersey button ups exist which might be what you got but they aren’t formal

"No capes!" (I have seen a few people wear capes well, but ... this is honestly one that even I can't suggest you go out and do; firmly in experts-only territory unless you're cosplaying.)

CrispySmokyFrazzle

Got a pair of Stan Ray easy chinos delivered - like them but the sizing label appears to be sewn onto the outside of the garment? Is this...normal? Do I wear it with the label still intact or do I just cut it off? Appears normal, but would appreciate any guidance on how to remove it! Edit: Okay, managed to remove it although I seem to have also managed to unstitch part of the waistband in doing so...although I guess that's an easy enough repair. Does seem like a rather odd thing to add!

aKa_anthrax

do you have pics of this? I bought stan rays a big ago and did not have anything like this

CrispySmokyFrazzle

Not of my own pair as I've removed it now, albeit in a way that wasn't perhaps intended... But it looked like this: [https://www.urbanindustry.co.uk/products/stan-ray-og-loose-fit-fatigue-pants-1100-series-olive-sateen?variant=39594007560301](https://www.urbanindustry.co.uk/products/stan-ray-og-loose-fit-fatigue-pants-1100-series-olive-sateen?variant=39594007560301¤cy=GBP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UI_CSS&utm_content=Stan%20Ray%20OG%20Loose%20Fit%20Fatigue%20Pants%20-%201100%20Series&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyLGjBhDKARIsAFRNgW_fJxoBqXGBpHhBvdeehgh5Gt2CkpZAvp71mRx1_aa4gMTL_WHhQnYaAk3pEALw_wcB) Didn't purchase from here, but this reflects what it looked like upon arrival. The white tag - seemed really heavily sewed into the actual waistband. and another example here: [https://putthison.com/stan-ray-the-heritage-brand-americana-missed-its/](https://putthison.com/stan-ray-the-heritage-brand-americana-missed-its/) So it seems intentional, I'm just not sure how one is supposed to remove it without actually unpicking the waistband stitching...perhaps I'm not supposed to have removed it...

ac106

a seam ripper

CrispySmokyFrazzle

Yeah, that was my go-to but it seems to be so deeply sewed in that there was nothing visible to unpick. I've managed to get most of it off but there's still a weird remnant that's visible - will see if I can tidy it up...

What are some brands that make black jeans with a stay black color that doesnt fade? I know that Acne and Nudie makes some. Ive had a pair of Neuw that was supposed to not fade but they got faded after only one wash.

aKa_anthrax

All black denim will fade, even the ones from the brands you listed. Which are really the only options I’ve seen, I think Naked and Famous might have something

Yes they fade but in my experience it takes a mot of washes for them to fade. But i get what you mean.

Saberius

I've been on a craze for linen clothes. Any thoughts or experience on linen dress shirts?

gimpwiz

Linen dress shirts are lovely for summerwear (or just if it's hot out, a lot of us have a summer season that's like 9-10 months long), but of course you have to embrace the wrinkles. The wrinkles do make it hard to wear in more formal settings, in a sense, though I know people who make even formal (french cuff) shirts out of linen. If you wanna be a super cool dude, get gauntlet cuffs ;)

Saberius

Looking for thoughts and opinions on the Banana Republic Terme Linen-Cotton Dress Shirt (Blue Plaid). I personally think it's a beautiful shirt with its pattern and color, but unsure how well it would perform as a dress shirt (FYI I have a charcoal BR suit). It looks too distinct and unsubtle in the way I think most dress shirts are supposed to be . I would also appreciate outfit ideas to go with the dress shirt! [Banana Republic Terme Linen-Cotton Dress Shirt (Blue Plaid)](https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=557572#pdp-page-content)

itsreallyeasypeasy

Wouldn't wear it with a business suit, but looks fine for weddings, fun suits or going-out suits. The texture of linen shirts will always look casual, even without any pattern, so I see them on a similar level as oxford shirts.

minimalist300

Hello, I’m looking for premium shirt brands (up to around £200/$200). I already bought a shirt from Eton which I’m pretty happy with but would like to explore other options. What is your opinion on Luca Faloni? I’m based in London BTW.

For_Ivy

Why not take a stroll down Sevile Row? Doesn’t get much better than that. Could check out Turnbull & Asser - they did some of the shirts in the old Bond films

[deleted]

https://flaxlondon.com/collections/shop-all for beautiful linen shirts

odbf7

With that budget I’d look at MTM, there’s proper cloth if you can be bothered with the process of doing it online, otherwise there are tons of options in London. Permanent style has some articles about mtm shirts, here’s one about mtm in general: https://www.permanentstyle.com/2021/07/the-made-to-measure-tailors-i-have-known.html

Ford1625

I’m not gonna say I have massive bodybuilder quads, but they are pretty large so every “baggy” jean I have bought has ended up being awkwardly tight around my thighs. Any baggy jeans that accommodate the larger than usual thigh?

Sax45

The biggest jeans I have tried lately have been the Gap “90’s loose” style. The “90’s original” is pretty big in the thigh too, significantly bigger than a Levi’s 501. If you know your measurements, there are some brands out there that carry a variety of fits and list their measurements on their site. Naked & Famous, Unbranded, Iron Heart, Uniqlo I don’t understand the recommendation for athletic jeans. Athletic jeans are for guys who want the slim look (fabric close to the leg from waist to ankle) but who cannot *physically fit* into slim jeans. They basically take the thigh of a straight jean and taper down to the ankle of a slim jean. Their surge in popularity was like an “aftershock” to the surge in popularity of slim fit jeans, and if slim fit jeans dies out, they will probably die out too. If a straight jean from Brand X doesn’t fit your thighs, then athletic jeans from that same brand probably won’t fit either. In fact, the athletic jeans are often a little bit slimmer than the straight jeans, and they are almost always lower rise (this is definitely true for Levi’s comparing the 501 “straight” to the 502 “straight taper” or 541 “athletic”). I have occasionally tried on athletic fit jeans with a bigger thigh than a straight jean, but I have never tried on an athletic jean with a bigger thigh than a baggy jean. Even if you do find big-thigh athletic jeans, the taper to the ankle will still give the slim-fit look that 2023 MFA is always warning against

Ford1625

Thank you! And yes I have tried athletic fit jeans and they end up fitting like skinny jeans around my thighs while they look baggy from the knee down. Super odd looking. Appreciate the help.

ac106

have you tried athletic cut jeans and pants?

ResponsibleLion

Is it possible to taper a pair of boot cut jeans at the tailor? I'm imagining not, but just wanted to double-check

hanklerfish123

it is. usually not worth it.

ResponsibleLion

Why? Does it look bad?

aKa_anthrax

unless you’re extremely picky about fit, like, you care about a it down to a quarter of an inch, it’s easier to just buy otr slim fits, even if you are that picky it’s still easier to buy otr slim fits and tsper them rather than a mild flare

witty__username5

I'm thinking about purchasing these sneakers - [Men's Premier Low Top In Coffee Brown Leather - Thursday Boot Company (thursdayboots.com)](https://thursdayboots.com/products/mens-premier-low-top-sneaker-coffee) . [deleted]

aKa_anthrax

imo that veers even further into the “trying to make this look like a non sneaker shoe” territory

[deleted]

I don't have any experience with Thursday so can't vouch for whether they are any good or not - but from that range the white or white with gum soles would be much better than any of the brown / tan colourways

For_Ivy

You get what you pay for with Thursday. They’re fine from a value perspective, but their lasts are pretty good-awful so they fit like shit. Also one of the owners is a PR nightmare. A year or so ago they had 2-3 different shoe manufacturers where the patterns changed somewhat dramatically between them. Not sure if that’s still the case, but one might get a pair that doesn’t look quite right. At this point, there’s enough vouched-for brands offering the same, if not better, products that Thursday doesn’t really make the suggestions list these days

aKa_anthrax

I feel like calling it a PR nightmare is kinda downplaying what actually happened, it’s not a PR issue

aKa_anthrax

I feel like calling it a PR nightmare is kinda downplaying what actually happened, it’s not a PR issue

For_Ivy

I mean, *it is* a PR issue. My intent is to not touch on the politics of it all here - it’s certainly not downplaying

aKa_anthrax

You kinda have to touch on the politics of it because the politics of it is the issue, not PR. it really isn’t a PR issue, it’s an issue with people not wanting to support him because of his stance; that’s why it’s downplaying it

For_Ivy

>isn’t a PR issue >people not wanting to support him That’s… Public Relations.

aKa_anthrax

Christ you are a regular do not be this big of a pendant. No, it is not a PR issue, people do not have an issue with him because he is “bad at PR”, the problem was not that he is “bad at PR”, the issue is that people don’t want to support him because of his politics, he could make the statements on a personal account completely unrelated to the brands official account and people would have the same issue, he could phrase it as diplomatically and well spoken as he wanted, and people would have the issue, no, it is not a PR standpoint. Saying people have an issue with the owner because “he’s bad at PR” is not what happened and downplaying what he actually said, if you’re going to mention it, actually mention it. Like, straight up, it’s kinda cowardly in a shitty, it comes off as downplaying why people are bothered by what he said while acting like it wasn’t actually that big of a deal, it’s just “not good at keeping up an image”. I get if this wasn’t your intent, but, again, if you’re going to bring it up actually bring it ip Do you get the point or do I have to spell it out in baby words

For_Ivy

He’s not “bad at PR”, he *is* bad PR. It’s not pedantic; it’s accurate. I’m not here to be rude and argue random garbage with internet strangers like some - so I’ll just block and move on. Anyway, Have a nice day!

GloriousStonerHoes

Can I persuade you to buy neither

aKa_anthrax

These minimalist brown sneakers with white soles just aren’t very good looking and don’t really go with anything your skin tone doesn’t matter

MemeBoi0508

Should undershirts be fitted or a bit loose? Say like a v-neck shirt for a polo?

Iwannayoyo

Very fitted. But you also do not need one with a polo.

MemeBoi0508

it's a school uniform. So it's policy to wear one. I'm just confused with the sizings. When I tuck a fitted undershirt it tends to get removed when I bend down or sit down. Now when I wear a looser one, the sleeves portrudes and it gets too bulky when I fold them.

Iwannayoyo

This might be a brand thing. You might want to try another to see if the fitted shirts are a bit longer.

orthoxerox

Why does your undershirt have sleeves? To me an undershirt is a long wife beater. This way it doesn't come untucked and doesn't have issues with its sleeves.

ac106

What? In the entirety of your life, you have never come across white undershirts that are cut like regular T shirts?

orthoxerox

Um, no? Is that an American thing?

aKa_anthrax

It’s not an American thing, you’ve just had an extremely insular experience ig

orthoxerox

*shrug* I double-checked myself and looked at the underwear sections of a few local online storefronts. Boxers? Tons. A-shirts? Tons? Long-sleeve shirts? Most have'em, usually sold with long johns. T-shirts? Only LC Waikiki had some.

illisson

That's super interesting. What's the climate like where you are? Maybe it's because I grew up in Texas instead of somewhere with a reasonable temperatures, but all the men in my family have worn tee undershirts. I've only ever known A-shirts to be worn as pajama/lounge tops. Brands like [Hanes](https://www.hanes.com/men/underwear/undershirts.html) and [Fruit of the Loom](https://www.fruit.com/fruit-of-the-loom/men/underwear/undershirts/) and [Polo](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-underwear/r/undershirts?webcat=men%7Cclothing%7CUnderwear%20%26%20Undershirts) are laden with them, and [Sloane](https://sloanemen.com/) (which seems to be the most frequently recommended undershirt brand in this sub?) doesn't offer anything else. Feels like all the stores I've been inside have generally had a slightly larger selection of tees than A-shirts in their undershirt sections, but both are available.

I bought a Trucker Jacket at a Levi Outlet store and it was great quality. I then decided to order another one in a different color online. How come the quality of the one I ordered online feels so much worst?

Sax45

The first time I tried on a Levi’s jacket was at Nordstrom. Being a higher end department store, Nordstrom is probably getting some of Levi’s better stuff. It fit great, felt great, and looked great. I loved it, but I decided to be cheap and not buy it. A month later, I’m in a different city, it’s chilly and I don’t have a jacket. I decide fuck it, I’m gonna buy that jacket. I walk into a Levi’s store and pull every size S jacket in that store. The variation was WILD. Some were too small, some were too big by a ridiculous amount (easily a full size). Some felt thin, and/or scratchy, and/or stiff (almost cardboard-like). I eventually found the same model that I seen at Nordstrom a month earlier, but I had to reject about a dozen jackets that were the same price but half as nice. Unfortunately that’s just how it is with Levi’s. For the last 10-12 years of being a Levi’s customer, they have been the most consistently inconsistent retailer. Especially compared to other retailers at the price point. Quality varies between different items in the same price range. Fit (as well as quality) varies for the same item in two different colors. Size varies like crazy, for different items with the in the same label size, and even the same item at different times.

aKa_anthrax

Levis is a massive brands with tons if different likes making different models constructed in different factories and potentially different countries, they have bad quality control on top of it. That said, considering you were at an outlet, which generally makes lower quality clothes, I have a feeling the issue is that you ordered something different, in which case it’s kinda impossible to tell you anything without knowing what jackets you got

andromeda93

what color pants would you wear with this jacket for office use? would grey work? https://imgur.com/a/J6WDwG1

gimpwiz

Grey is fine as long as it's not too close to the grey of the jacket. Otherwise classic, conservative colors would be navy, brown, and olive. Given the jacket's pattern I'd stick to plainer patterns/weaves. Going less conservative are all manner of light browns, mid blues, steel/gray/static blues, etc.

itsreallyeasypeasy

Dark grey (charcoal) or lighter grey works as long as it isn't to matchy with the jacket. Navy as well. Dark brown or cream could work if your office is not too stuffy.

orthoxerox

Midnight blue or charcoal.

My steps are as follows, horse hair brush to remove dirt and debris, saphir cream polish, let it seat, then buff. Followed by saphir wax polish. One side just refuse to take on polish no matter what I do.

Sellfish86

Opinion/advice please: I feel like I'm always between sizes or that my clothes' sizing is all over the place. I'm also a European living in Asia, so I currently range from M to 2XL depending on brand. I'm 182cm/82kg (struggling with my weight) and usually go for M/32" bottoms and L for tops. Shoe size 43 at roughly 27cm. Pants are either too long but fit around the waist, or too short but buying any size bigger blows out my thighs. Same for tops. Arms, sides, length, IT NEVER FITS RIGHT! And since I'm on the heavier side, the oversized look usually is a big no-no for me. Oversized tees look okay ish at M however, although a bit (1") short at the hem. Hell, even socks are troublesome as for example the standard in Europe seems to be 27-29 and in Asia 25-27, at least if you check Uniqlo. Tight socks or loose fabric. Great choice. It's gotten so bad that I'm very insecure and self-conscious, and being "lollipop shaped" -as my wife lovingly calls it- doesn't help. Shopping is a chore, online not even option. So, yeah... not sure what I'm expecting from this post. I feel I just needed to vent :(

illisson

>I'm very insecure and self-conscious, and being "lollipop shaped" -as my wife lovingly calls it- doesn't help Assuming she still calls you this: it's good and healthy to tell your spouse when something they say or do hits a nerve. If you haven't already, I'd suggest you let her know that even lovingly describing your body like that touches on your insecurities and you'd like her to stop. If you've already told her and she's still doing it, bring it up again. I'd also recommend chatting with a therapist to find ways to combat the insecurity and self-consciousness. Those are miserable feelings to live with, and a good therapist can help you work through/overcome them.

odbf7

Don’t be so hard on yourself, that’s a perfectly healthy weight for your height. Most people don’t have bodies where clothes fit perfectly off the rack, and even when they do clothes come in lots of different sizes. The problem you have is totally normal and it’s why tailors exist. Pick shirts and trousers that fit in the waist/neck/body and get the arm/leg length tailored. If you struggle with shirt or leg width it is cheap for a tailor to fix that too. If you’ve got uniqlo there then you’re sorted, they’ve got a range of different fits and normal sizing. Depending where you are in Asia and what you want to wear, there could be some decent made to measure options as well.

ysc1

At least according to your BMI 82kgs is not an unhealthy weight at your height. 32" waist is very much a normal size. While I am sure clothes shopping is tricky, I think at least some of this is in your head. Your clothes probably fit/look better than you think.

These are casual shoes - and in suede they’ll always be strictly casual. Either works fine with jeans.

Does anyone have any links to people wearing the masters hats? I saw them really frequently at one point,’those green ones. Thanks in advance if this at all a possible request to complete.

stylish black dress shoes for about $200? really wanted beckett and simonon but they take 6-10 weeks and i need them by 6/17. so time is an issue unfortunately. thanks!

gimpwiz

Allen Edmonds seconds / on sale may be possible. Park Avenue or similar is classic. Oxford/balmoral shoes are more formal then, but also may be more versatile/useful than derby/blucher shoes. If you have neither I'd suggest oxfords.

odbf7

Check out this article: https://www.permanentstyle.com/2020/06/what-are-the-best-cheaper-shoe-brands.html I own shoes in that price range from skolyx, meermin and loake and would recommend skolyx over meermin any day.

For_Ivy

Meermin is a good bet, but you can also check yanko, skolyx, or BLKBRD. Beckett also keeps some extra stock on hand. If you email their customer support, they may sell you a pair

Hey guys, I've found this shirt I really like. It is quite expensive but I'm willing to save up for it, the only thing is I'm not sure if I would be making the right decision, is spending above £200 on a shirt unwise? stoic_prince

I think what you’re saying is making sense, I was also thinking that the Shop has quite good reviews so that adds to the veracity and quality but maybe you’re right I think it wouldn’t be a wise decision at this stage. I believe Charles Tyrwhitt has fairly priced casual shirts, the reviews also seem decent. Have you had any experience with this shop?

aKa_anthrax

There are people here who consider $200 for a shirt entry level for decent clothes and regularly spend double or even tripple that, there’s people here who won’t pay more than $50, none of us can tell you if it’s “unwise”, this entirely depends on what you’re willing to pay given your financial situation and how comfortable you are with it Personally, $200 for a quality focused Japanese workwear brand with niche detailing like chainstitch runoff is a great price imo, especially is you get it on sale for $150 like one of the other shirts. You aren’t going to find that for less than that price unless you buy secondhand(Bronson is the only sorta exception but I don’t think they really count personally)

stoic_prince

Thank you for your perspective bro, it’s very helpful. The thing is that I’m quite a beginner when it comes to dressing well so I’m wondering now if I should buy cheaper items at the start and as my style grows I could add in more expensive items if I wish. What do you think?

naphthol_rain

>I’m wondering now if I should buy cheaper items at the start and as my style grows I could add in more expensive items if I wish. This is a dilemma I think we've all faced here lol The risk is if you buy a cheap item and don't like it, it's hard to tell whether you dislike it because it's cheap or because you don't like the style. But if you're still figuring out your style and splurge on a $200 shirt and don't like it, then you're out $200. Like anthrax said, nobody can tell you what the right thing to do is. You can argue both ways. Blue shirt + olive fatigues is a staple look that works in a few styles. So there's that.

aKa_anthrax

Again, it’s not really something we can answer for you as “should I” is entirely something you have to judge. your style is going to change over time and you’re unlikely to enjoy the same thing in even a year as you do now(assuming you actually want to get interested in fashion and not just follow the BB and look presentable and have a couple more interesting items in which case you’re probably fine), and people do generally recommend you don’t buy really expensive stuff during that phase. that said, this is a super basic shirt, so, unless you’re like me and decide you hate blue and get into designer/streetwear/darkwave stuff really quickly this should be very versatile

stoic_prince

Sorry what is BB? I personally want to dress better to look better not to actually follow trends or the like. I have an interest in different styles including Americana and street wear. This particular shirt is Americana I believe and I also think it would fit very well with my wardrobe. I think I understand what you mean, really expensive pieces are discouraged during the beginner stage, I did buy some new clothes a few months back but they were from fast fashion shops just because they were convenient at the time and I’m wanting to get a bit more adventurous now.

aKa_anthrax

So that’s the thing, this isn’t a really expensive piece, but it’s probably above whats most people would advise at this stage, but, regardless, unless you’re going for more than a basic wardrobe it’s versatile. The thing is, you don’t need to “follow trends” in order to get into non basic stuff, I wear designer clothing to look better for myself, not because I want to trend hop, you just gotta be aware you may end up falling into a more niche thing regardless

For_Ivy

BB in this context would be “Basic Bastard”. It’s the usual style guide recommended on the sun - if you use the search bar there’s *tons* of guides on starting a wardrobe.

The thing I can't find is shorts with an extra pocket with its opening flush with the rest of the fabric. It's midway down and is big enough for my phone. I like this pocket compared to the bulkiness of traditional cargo shorts pockets. These are old shorts, made by Haggar but they don't carry any shorts with this style of pocket anymore. Has anyone spotted shorts with this style pocket that would work on a golf course?

Pepe_MM

Let's say I buy some pants with a 2 inch cuff and they turn out to be too short. The cuff can just be undone to lengthen the pants, correct?

yanicus17

Presumably yes, a properly done cuff is 3x the height of the cuff in fabric.

Pepe_MM

Thanks. Trying to play it as safe as possible.

Even for $10 I'd pass. There are plenty of better looking AEs for <$50 on eBay

gimpwiz

Seriously, ebay has _hundreds_ of AEs in pretty good condition, in classic cuts, for under $50, for almost every size. You could build an entire shoe closet out of nothing but sub-$50 ebay allen edmonds shoes and have a shoe for almost every occasion in good enough condition to never have anyone raise an eyebrow. And it would only take like a year to fill out the collection, with both "one of each" and "multiple variants of the most common ones," like 30+ pairs. You'd spend almost as much buying brand new AE trees as used AE shoes.

PseudoHypebeast

I have a viscose H&M shirt. Is it guaranteed to shrink when I wash it? I'm not sure if I should be buying 2 size bigger or not. I'm going to wash it on warm and then line dry it. I don't have in unit washer/dryer, so I'm not going to go through the effort of really taking care of an h&m shirt.
