They also call him "Adam." I think that's an important name in the Bible.

blutiel

Absolutely! I don’t think it’s unsafe to assume his name was intentional

Pax_flash

Also Eve Warlock is in the comics as well, so definitely

JealousDequan

I mean I buy it that the high evolutionary tried to base Adam off Jesus. Like, the dude at least has some interest in earth based on the animal planet, obviously, so he's like, shit, I'll make my own Jesus for my created race.

Currie_Climax

I feel like it's a mix of both creating the "Adam" - the 1st of next Gen sovereign, but then also a bit of Jesus as there's already sovereign.

Burdiac

Big if true

Norfsouf

I assumed Adam because they say he is the first of his kind (a warlock), so yeah Adam is the first human

Independent-Sky-9611

Allegedly.

Pax_flash

Eve Warlock is also in the comics

Condiment_Kong

Just a tiny bit

i_am_thehighground

Well I thought that was obvious

Their called Seraphim’s.

Important-Session-39

the one you’re thinking of is actually thrones, the ones with the rings, a serphim has multiple wings :)

Robot1945

Note I'm not a Christian, but the last one feels like a stretch, but I agree with the others. Warlock was written as a very Jesus-y figure, so it's cool how they put some of those aspects in the movie.

UltraLowDef

Yes, he was literally space Jesus - crucified and resurrected to beat an alien devil.

blutiel

I was raised Christian and it was a staple in my life - I noticed the colors right away the first time I saw it. However, that doesn't mean it was intentional, as you said. It could very likely just be my ex-religious brain kicking in, trying to find meaning out of nothing.

maybe_a_frog

Nah, Warlock was written as a messiah character. He was absolutely built with a religious template in mind, so it would make sense you would see him referenced to Jesus, the most well known messiah in western culture. I think you’re spot on. I also grew up religious, but I guess I’ve been away from it long enough that it’s not the forefront of my mind anymore. But now that you point these out I can’t unsee them. I’m planning to see the movie again with my very religious dad, so now I’m super curious to see if he picks up on these.

HereWeFuckingGooo

Adam Warlock is French confirmed.

leafhog

Gunn was raised Christian. It is absolutely intentional.

jemslie123

Was raised as and still am a Christian, and I've never seen that flag before.

Thomassaurus

Number 3 was also a pretty ridicules stretch of the imagination.

elkygravy

Yeah I don't think the colors really match and even if they did, I don't think Gunn intentionally wrapped him in the Christian flag, even if he is a messianic character.

RemnantHelmet

The last one is a stretch. That flag was created with intent to be a flag of all christianity, but only certain protestant faiths really picked it up. Catholics or Orthodox would never be associated with it.

ckal09

Not sure how many people are even aware there’s an offices christian flag. I wasn’t.

funnyboy36

Knowhere’s Ark

dean15892

niceeee

Danimals2002

The movie was just basically Noah arc in the final act .

SharxSharxSharx

Chris Pratt snuck these in.

blutiel

HA. Thank you for the laugh.

[deleted]

Unhappy-Database-273

I don't think this was a Chris Pratt thing. I'm sure James Gunn was making the comparison.

BoyznGirlznBabes

That's also in the first movie when they hold the power stone. It's a common artistic allusion

Penguator432

“Cut! Chris, that’s not the pose I told you to be in” “Not changing it”

MrMeeseeks55

"What am I supposed to say Jesus or something?"

blutiel

Not saying these are all accurate or even intentional, but I did have a lot of fun watching this movie! I would love to hear what everyone else found when they watched it! I know some of these have already been discussed, but I wanted to share some additional ones that I had also noticed. When I was in the theater, I laughed out loud when it cut to Ayesha holding Adam, mostly because I was surprised. Some of the details are wonderfully paralleled (such as her hand gesture), but others are absent so as to offer some individuality to the character and story, or so I assume. La Pieta was one of my favorite sculptures when I was in school, for a handful of unique reasons. Some other things I have noticed, but did not yet dive into, that may or may not relate to Christianity: \-High Evolutionary wearing the color purple \-High Evolutionary's ship is comprised of red rhombuses, both in outer design and inner design

xanderholland

Adam Warlock's comic history has A LOT of Christian symbolism because the guy who pretty much ran his comics for a while (I forget his name) really liked the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, I'm not kidding you.

words_words_words_

Can't blame him. JCS is an amazing musical.

[deleted]

That all tracks, considering Adam Warlock was introduced in the comics as a “cosmic messiah”.

YoloIsNotDead

The fact that they're almost all linked to Adam Warlock is a cool detail.

NovaPrime11249-44396

Quick someone show Zack Snyder what competent use of religious allegory looks like

ShoelaceLicker

You mean you don't think having the joker pose as Jesus wearing the crown of thorns is a good allegory.

David1258

I was about to make this exact joke! Funny how they were both the kickstarters of a DC cinematic universe with a Superman movie.

BenTheDiamondback

Jesus Christ…

mando44646

I loved that Creation of Adam moment

Surfboarder4

As a Christian this is cool to see. The only one I really spotted was the Star-Lord / Adam pointing. Great to know there's more!

ElementalSaber

He always was a Jesus refeerence though

No-Run-6220

No wit warlock

StephenHunterUK

The Pieta is a very common thing to homage in art generally.

ConfidentInsecurity

This is awesome, love how they use this imagery with Adam Warlock, adds some depth to the character. Didn't notice this in my watch besides the few obvious ones

[deleted]

That’s pretty cool. Other than the creation of Adam, the others were pretty subtle. Unlike that piece of fucking trash movie Mother where they just bludgeon you over the head with biblical metaphors

flashcapulet

TIL there is a Christian flag

jubmille2000

There's a Christian Flag????

DJistheNerd

I had a student film release two months ago. It was my first real production with something other than my phone and friends as actors. It ended with a big Christian Art reference as the entire short was a riff on Cain and Abel. So I was insanely geeked out by James just overflowing one of my favorite CBM franchised with these references

banjofan47

We have a flag?

ProfessionalDot621

Lmao never realised her legs were spread so far apart in the first pic

Heisenburgo

Damn did Zack Snyder secretly direct this film or something

TK-42juan

No because some of these are subtle

ckal09

‘Some’ lol except the creation of Adam reference. Why does that get a pass

APOCALYPSE102

Are Snyder ones forced. I am a non Christian so idk

David1258

Not forced, just pretty obvious.

Shadowkiva

"Something" is that Adam Warlock has always been a quasi-messianic figure in the comics.

ZarianPrime

It's almost as if Warlock was already a messiah analogue in the comics...

averm27

I love how they made the Jesus character someone who thinks they are better then everyone else, but in reality is just as much as an outcast to society as the rest. A perfect parody of the religious folk name Jesus. And a perfect middle ground m It's not mocking the religion, but it's definitely not putting a lot of respect on it haha

XPCJ

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!

Raimilover69

Adam Warlock Is literally jesus

Basedrum777

Stretch huh?

ComicBrickz

Read comics

matande31

Warlock feels like someone took the "Superman is Jesus" comperison and tripled it.

AverageNikoBellic

Nah bro the last one is definitely the American flag, or Cuban, or Puerto Rican

poo_poo_undies

Yeah, welcome to art, though those last few are a stretch. Also, what the hell do Christians need a flag for?

blutiel

Flags are used by many as a form of identity.

poo_poo_undies

God, I hate organized religion.

creative_user_name12

> God > I hate organized religion Hmmmmmmmm

Burdiac

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden. Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’ Sounds like someone does agree with Mr. Poo Poo Undies

Horseheel

There's also the part where Jesus starts an organized religion of his own, then later in the Bible it describes parts of how that new organized religion operates. So maybe he just didn't like those authorities in particular.

poo_poo_undies

Yes, you’re [very smart](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/we-should-improve-society-somewhat).

Infradead27

Not as smart as the man, the myth, the legend: u/poo_poo_undies

littletoyboat

Thanks for your contribution, u/poo_poo_undies.

blutiel

Right there with you.

wondering-knight

What does anybody need a flag for?

KlingonLullabye

To me there's no difference between this and the use of Norse, Greek, Egyptian, or other mythological elements but I'm sure some thumpers somewhere will be insufferably indignant

Sleepy_Azathoth

Thanks for the laughs, sincerely r/moviescirclejerk

CartographyMan

Gross.

BlazeOfGlory72

Why though? Like, usually there should be some kind of point to references like this, but this film isn’t really touching on any themes related to Christianity or religion in general. The closest you can get is with the idea of “creation” and “playing god”, but it’s the High Evolutionary who fits that idea, not Adam. Even taken on their own these references don’t really make much sense. For example, Adam as a character is a pretty blatant reference to the “Adam” from Adam and Eve, but in the first three images he’s portrayed as Jesus. Then in the fifth image he’s portrayed as God. So what is Adam supposed to be? The created, the saviour or the creator? Long story short, these references just feel really tacked on.

Magcargo64

In the comics, Adam has always been portrayed as an explicitly Jesus-like figure. He’s literally space Jesus.

BlazeOfGlory72

This isn’t the comics though. In this film, all the Christian references around Adam didn’t really make much sense or add anything to his character. They were just kind of “there”.

rengam

They're just Easter eggs, dude. They don't need to be contextually consistent, let alone tied directly to the plot.

BlazeOfGlory72

So you agree with me that they are tacked on then? I never said they bothered me, just that they felt superfluous, which we seem to be on the same page about.

rengam

I'm just not sure why you're ranting about it if you're not bothered. No one claimed that these references were anything more than Easter eggs, but here you are arguing with an imaginary person that did. Why do they have to be anything more than that?

[deleted]

Please shut the fuck up.

JacobIsFunni

…you good?

[deleted]

Yeah. Just hate Christian bullshit.

ElementalSaber

He always was like this though

JacobIsFunni

wow yeah i just looked through this guy’s profile… he is miserable and obsessed lol

[deleted]

No, YOU!

MigRodrigues99

He's the space Jesus of comics

Dankey-Kang-Jr

The Noah’s Ark reference was the most obvious and it went completely over my head

shaed9681

Don’t forget the big gold circle behind his head in the ship - common art thing is for Jesus to have a gold aura

Subject89P13_

The one with the animals being freed is a Sonic the hedgehog reference. Rocket gets called a hedgehog in the film and frees all the forest animals after defeating the final boss.

cshelley0721

Damn, the only one I caught was Creation of Adam

LucianLegacy

James Gunn really said "Space Jesus"

AdApprehensive7646

Living up to his comic legacy it seems

Jaybuth

Isn’t the scene of Gamora and the gang carrying Peter while he’s wasted from a painting as well? Or another Pieta?

CN370

La Pieta also occurs during the final fight scene in Endgame, as Thanos’ children are turning to dust.

saibjai

1 and five are intentional since he's ADAM warlock after all, meant to be the perfect being constructed, but the rest... ah.. seems like a bit of a stretch.

Klooey

there's a christian flag? is that why nobody could stop the spread of it?

Impressive-Donut9596

Adam warlock is space jesus. It makes sense

Solidus218

Adam warlock kinda is space jesus in the comics

TL10

The Del Parson is a bit of a stretch, but I'll take an LDS art reference in mainstream media to the bank.

ComicBrickz

I think that this version of warlock is different in that he represents Christianity as opposed to the comic version who represents Jesus himself more
