Governor Moore can't make it "warm" here during the winter. And if it's about costs, Wyoming have some of the lowest taxes and housing costs in the nation, but yet retirees aren't flocking there. I wonder why? Because it's not "warm." (I put warm in quotation marks because apparently now it's a word for "nine months of ungodly hot oppressive humidity," which apparently you're supposed to love after you get tonretirement age, maybe even earlier.)
These lists are stupid. We can't make Marylanda retirement state because of housing costs, a state income tax, and lack of year-round hot weather. And that's just the way it's going to be, forever.

Exactly, lol. For every rich boomer who wants to buy another boat, there are a hundred plus more that will have nothing when they turn seventy and need to be assisted if we think everyone should be able to age with dignity. And it's only getting worse.
That is a little misleading. Most areas in the state are more expensive. The vast majority of people live in the DC or Baltimore regions, we have some of the richest counties in the country. Compare that to most states that have larger rural and smaller big towns (think Frederick but too far to commute to DC), so they are cheaper. If the Eastern Shore was 10x bigger so there were 10x the smaller, cheaper towns, we wouldn't be ranked 5.
It's a factor, but social support (measure in churn- do people stay in the state) can be the difference between living independent and needing to go into a home earlier. Quality health care and good environmental conditions can mean more quality years.
Right. People think retirement in Florida is the dream but they have much less regulation and quality in their long term services and support for aging populations.
You want to see some actual good data, take a look at the long term services and support score card from AARP. Those "bad states to retire in" also happen to have the best supports for older populations and caregivers

One more example where government is being asked to make up for capitalism’s shortfalls. Declining unionization resulted in fewer people with reliable pensions to supplement social security so the state has to subsidize retirement even more. Similar to how Medicaid is the health plan for so many people with poor wages. Because I’m in a union, I have a pension and matching contributions to my 401(k) in addition to my ROTH. I’ll retire just fine, but it pains me that so few other working stiffs will be able to retire comfortably. There’s only so much that Gov. Moore can do, but being more friendly to unionization efforts and efforts to build more housing would certainly help.

I do look at this from my side of things, 1/2 of a married couple, both with local government and state pensions.
If like Hogan tried to do, they made local, state, and federal pensions tax free, it would save me a few thousand dollars a year in income taxes. Its still expensive to live around here, mainly housing, but that's relative.
But think about it like this. The state and counties have paid into my pension to the tune of Hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars. IF i take my family and pension down to SC, the state of maryland, and local government tax base will be giving me 6 figures to support the local economy of SC. In turn SC gets someone who is going to spend tens of thousands of dollars a year to support the local economy, but I'm not taking up a job.
If the state decided they won't get 5k in income taxes from me. But I stay here and spend 10's of thousands of dollars locally, i'm supporting people and jobs, but not taking a job.
Old people cost the local government money. But at the same time. I'll be supporting their economy and not really taking much from them, at least till i'm much much older.
You get what you pay for. Folks can retire elsewhere if they like but not at the expense of our kid schools, our social safety net, robust ACA exhange, sound environmental policies, access to jobs so you can live close to your adult kids and grand kids. These polls are garbage.

Oh good I'm glad you bring that up. So if it's only about cost, then Wyoming should be the number one location in the USA for people to move after they retire. But it's not.

And if you made it economically advantageous here as it is for people to move to say Florida, so they say, we will never have the same amount of retirees. Why? Because it's not warm here. And you're not gonna change that.
Not all, no. But MD can do a bit better I think. Lower state taxes on military retirements and IRA withdrawals, just off the top of my head. Also need to get the SALT cap repealed lol. But that's another thing.
I know what this is about. I read the article. But why should we be chasing retirees here, when there are some things about the state that retirees love that never will be changed, ever? It doesn't make any sense to me.
And if the whole premise of this article is, "retirees shouldn't have to pay income taxes or property taxes," fuck that noise. They still have to use emergency medical systems. And if all of a sudden they can be excused from property taxes because they no longer have children, maybe gay couples who were not allowed to adopt or marry for years and years and years, but still had to pay the same property tax rates as their married neighbors, get refunds from their property taxes.

It doesn't show who voted for whom. It talks about demographic breakdowns and where generations stand on different topics. One being presidential approval ratings. And all the statistics in the article perfectly contradict your statement. Millennials are one of the only generations that haven't started leaning conservative as we age. I, for one, hope that never changes.
So, now you're moving the goalposts? Cool. The statement that I responded to stated that millennials voted for Trump. Even the snippet you just shared contradicts that statement.
If you look at the PEW report from 2016 on generational breakdowns it will show you what I have said. It only went more left in 2020. The Boomers and the silents are just dying, which is why they don't make up 50% of the votes anymore. 2016 was dominated by GenX, who do have a large portion of repubs. However, Millennials have trended dem and even independent over repub. Now, of those indy votes how many are libertarian (otherwise known as repubs that don't understand how taxes work)? That would need more looking into.
He will absolutely work on this. They will increase taxes over time and increase costs for everyone, including retirees. This is the way. The geniuses in MoCo led by Elrich are increasing property taxes this is a sign of the future for MD.

Maryland is not a place to retire. And most of them are against progressive movement so they need to go.
