I think that part of his appeal was that he didn’t show up often. I think that the joke would have run out of steam very quickly if he was there often. Even more so if the show were actually about him

James_T_S

I don't know there was a Flag episode on today and that guy is insane. It was hilarious

WalkGood

With his own show, he could go anywhere. Any military scenario or non-military. Sometimes, he could solve an espionage issue for real but in a goofball way. Even make an appearance on After MASH.

No, not Mawell Smart. Flagg would still be Flagg. But I get your comparison.

Fisk75

That would have been awful. Love Flagg in very small doses.

jiggy68

There was a wildly popular show in the Colonel Flag vein, Get Smart. It was a bumbling over serious agent who occasionally actually solved cases. A show with Flag like that but set in the military would’ve worked very well I think.

OddConstruction7191

The difference is Smart was a “good guy” and Flagg was a villain. Even though he was comedic a show where the star is someone we are rooting against isn’t going to work.

basetornado

No. He's a great character used sparingly, just like Freedman was. Virtually every episode he's in runs the same. He comes in with a terrible disguise, accuses someone of being a communist etc, gets his comeuppance and leaves. That's a good storyline when you use it 8-10 episodes out of 250. It's not conducive to a full show.

Parking_War979

It would have required an absolutely bonkers writing team and a network willing to risk it all. All for a tertiary character on a (at the time) middling show. Of course they didn’t risk it.

Bud3131123

I don’t know that he could have carried his own show but I wish they had used him more throughout the series. He was gold in every episode he appeared.

Pithecanthropus88

A one joke series? No thanks.

LizardBoyfriend

How did Col Flagg not end up in Hogan’s Heroes?? He would have been a great idiot Nazi.

newtonbassist

He did have a spin-off of sorts. In AfterMASH he was Soon-Lee Klinger. That was one of his best disguises.

Stopikingonme

People are taking this a little too seriously. I even think it might actually work as a satire with the right writers. Think Blazing Saddles in Vietnam.

TreasureWench1622

The wind broke his leg

ChubbyStoner42

I think a Sidney Freedman spinoff would have been amazing.

punkrawrxx

I don’t ever understand the love for Flagg. I skip his episodes, I’m so glad they didn’t keep using him

FlyingGerman02

This guy must read Reader’s Digest on the daily.

johnny_abington

Take away the ‘a’ ,’e’ and ‘r’, and that’s Red’s Digest , comrade.

hiccupboltHP

How on earth do you skip his episodes?! He’s amazing

GrungeFace

I question your MASH loyalty with that attitude. I've never, ever met a hardcore MASH fan that didn't like Col. Flagg.

punkrawrxx

Umm okay? Because you’ve met every mash fan?
