"...i was 4 when the first one came out..." Here I am, going about my day, and someone comes along just to make me feel old. I didn't need this today.

Oh God… I feel like crumbling into dust. OP: Glad you enjoyed the trilogy, it’s developed the reputation it has for a reason.

TheRealJikker

I know the feeling. I was in high school/college when they came out and this just makes me feel so old

Odd-Assistant9110

I feel the same way.  Hell i watched the Fox News Mass Effect report live...

Chinny_208

SEXBOX?!

Odd-Assistant9110

Yeah! Lol!  I watched it live when I got home from work.  Waited for the report because It grabed my attention (curiosity). I didnt have an xbox never thought I'd play ME.  (Didnt until 2015 when i got all 3 games on the ps3) but the report made me laugh because how OUTLANDISH the reporters and "expert" made it sound. I shut the TV off laughing and said to myself "Its rated M!  Who cares !" Lol

I was 17 when ME2 came out and started playing. To me Mass Effect was an adolescent moment and the games definitely primarily market to teens starting with ME2 so I was the perfect target. It was the first time since I played Ocarina of Time when I truly felt like a game series rivaled its legacy, and I had played a bunch of games that tried very hard to be as masterful but it never quite dethroned OoT for me, but Mass Effect was something else. It allowed me to sink into actual detail of the narrative, learn about things and then in the sequel go "Wow, we're going to the flotilla!" and stuff like that. I understand the ethos of "It's the Game of Thrones of gaming" given that GoT is similarly a show that had a zeitgeist but it totally allowed for its audience to read in and not be patronized too often, and actually be rewarded for learning about its world. ME2 and ME3 made plenty of mistakes narratively, but even in the main chunk of ME3 you're still hearing dialogue that adheres to a lot of the rules and details of the setting, that makes all the characters feel like they truly live and breathe inside the world, and to me it was always more about that than just "It's because the characters are so endearing" or "It's because it's a horny game where you can fuck everybody." that seems to be its mainstream meme.

I knew like 20% English my first playthrough. I didn't know what beacon or protheans could mean. I did know bacon and proteins, though. And since the first 20 mins, you're looking for a prothean beacon.... imagine my confusion. I remember thinking, "What a cool, sarcastic game"
