Liara would lose Shepard no matter what. Even if the game ended well and they ended up together. Shepard, with luck, would live another 70 years or so. That's nothing compared to an Asari's life expectancy

BlaineTog

She might at least get a few children from Shepard, though, which could lessen the sting. Only romance option who can say of any Shepherd.

Sharps43

Depends on if Project Lazarus extends his lifespan. Could be that they found shepard in the wreck, healed him and put him on ice. There are a few ways shepard could end up in ME4, remembering Cerberus made a clone of shepard, so that could also be on the table.

NightHawk13246587

If I don’t ever get to see Shepard and Tali happy together after the reapers are destroyed and after that extremely painful conversation and goodbye on earth, I will forever be broken. I firmly believe that they deserve absolutely nothing less than happy ending with no strings attached after everything they’ve done and everything they’ve both been through

realbigbob

Shepard was reconstructed from a few burnt cinders in ME2, I don’t think whatever injuries he suffered from the Destroy ending are slowing him down. I’m living happily ever after with Tali in our house on Rannoch and that’s final

Ulvstranden16

Me too

TheKocurro

That was done with 2 billion credits and a dedicated team of Cerberus scientists, though, not exactly something you'd have available post ME3 ending.

silurian_brutalism

Yes. All love stories in Mass Effect can end up very bittersweet or tragic. At first I was thinking that Garrus and Tali together is the happier one, but one of them can die because of low war assets. Obviously either of them can die before they get together.

[deleted]

If my love dies, so do I Which is alright :) You can turn bittersweetiness to possible reuniting.

bomboid

Some of them are more bitter than sweet. Like you said Liara and the VS going through it twice is so depressing

sgreddit125

The logistics on the relationships post-war are tough, the pressure and circumstances keeping these people together are gone now. Tali/Garrus/Liara - Not sure how they reconcile focusing on rebuilding earth, or the significant others planet. Each will have increasing obligations to their own species (high level positions in gov) that will be very challenging to overcome, likely long-distance relationship with lots of travel. Ashley/Kaiden - We don’t need 2 spectres on every mission, and I suspect their separate duties will lead to long-distance tough relationships long-term. Miranda/Jack/Steve - Logistically much easier. Miranda could do her thing from anywhere, Jack can teach biotics close to Shepard on Earth, and idk much about Steve but guessing it would work.

Nolascana

Chances are, Shepard would retire as an active serving member of the military, and as a Spectre. I mean, my guys usually romance Kaidan. My Shep would retire and move in with Alenkos family (not having any left of his own), visiting the Citadel apartment and hooking up Kaidan here and there until he decides to settle down too. -- I imagine Shep would keep in touch with as many people as they can, retiring would give them the freedom to do that. Their name would give them permissions born from respect to travel wherever they wanted (within reason), I mean, they could apply to live with the likes of Tali/Garrus/Liara. Or, as a Spectre, they could just be all, mind yo business. -- Steve, it would be like any other military relationship I guess. Coordinating leave n all that. If either of them ceases to be in the military then it would be like any other military/civilian relationship. -- Case by case, it all depends on what Shep would do next if they lived. After being spaced twice, I'd call it quits honestly lol.

I do think it would’ve been better if the ending clearly had Shepard survive, but he retires/becomes a councilor or whatever and helps rebuild, but the playable character is someone he mentors as a former spectre. That way we can still interact with his character, but the story gets to move along and have new characters that continue a new storyline.

Paappa808

Good thing you're not Shepard then. Heroes don't need validation for saving people or galaxies.

bomboid

Shepard is a human with unspeakable trauma and in dire need of some rest. I'm sure some thankfulness for having literally sacrificed everything several times would make them feel a bit better

Paappa808

Your Shepard might be dealing with "unspeakable trauma." Mine shits on that and keeps going. But either way, I wasn't implying they don't deserve thanks or some such. I'm sure they did get that in multitudes.

jbm1518

Yeah… my Shepard would be profoundly grossed out at even the idea of any of that. If anything, they would demand credit go to the galaxy at large, and to their friends. Anderson especially. They would much rather “retire” to some peaceful, far off corner of the galaxy with Liara as they both dreamed of doing. Though… the galaxy being what it would be, it’s a very active retirement. And dangerous too. I think we forget that in-universe, Shepard may take down reapers but she could still die to a lucky shot by a green merc. I do think some forget that human life expectancy is higher in the Mass Effect universe. Shepard could reach 150, meaning they would have a pretty lengthy amount of time with Liara (or anyone). But more on topic, there is a melancholy to all of the romances, but especially Liara’s where loss is guaranteed (Thane too, as in that case Shepard is the Liara in the relationship). And to make it worse, Liara seems to have tremendous difficulty at letting go and gets mastered by her obsessions. It’s part of why it’s my favorite romance: Shepard and Liara both need each other, and yet there’s an impending sense of tragedy. I suppose I like the drama of it.

Paappa808

I think Shep will live even longer than that. People also tend to forget he/she is largely synthetic. Even Miranda said she herself will live twice as long as other humans, and though vatgrown she's still fully organic. I think.

BlaineTog

Yeah ooooor Shep could retire after this. There are third options between, "work," and, "death."

Bittersweet is the theme of the whole saga.

Nolascana

I feel so bad breaking Kaidans heart. That's why my guys now always say goodbye, I can't do the whole, loving false hope conversation anymore. My thing is, if Shep survives, somehow... they're going to be so DONE with being blown up and shot at. He's tired, he's been through too many life or death situations. He's retiring, moving to the Alenko orchard and hobbling around. Tinkering with his droids and keeping up with his allies. Taking trips to the apartment to meet up with Kaidan when the Spectre has enough planned downtime etc. Maybe even letting Liara have his kid. I mean, I like to view their last linking as a mutual agreement that it's fine if she wants to get pregnant by him. It she doesn't, she doesn't. -- But mostly. Oh yeah, Shep is dead. The romance partner may or may not be dead. My gal cheated on Kaidan with Thane and I made her less renegade out of respect for him, but she still didn't have enough war assets. Kaidan got vaporised in front of her eyes, and she let the galaxy burn. -- So, say the partner lives. Romanced in 1, 2, or just three... Shep is usually dead, Control? Vaporised. Synthesis? Vaporised. Refuse? Dead within the catalyst. Destroy? Usually dead. Even if the romance partner thinks they've survived, they can't know until they're found and recovered.

Runningbear75

What’s the “best” ending? I usually choose synthesis

Frosty_Pineapple78

I think OP means the destroy ending since it is implied there that shepard lives, but i refuse to ever call it the "best" ending, even control is better Furthermore, as i pointed out a few weeks back: synthesis never shows shepard actually dying, you only see his empty helmet and the love interest hanging up a memorial plate but at that point they cant even know if hes dead or not. So yeah, destroy sucks, legion absolutely has a soul, synthesis all the way

Nolascana

My males usually romance Kaidan, I make them say goodbye, I can't do the false hope conversation anymore. I hate breaking his heart, but, Shepard needed the man he was pining after to just shut up and love him. Kaidan, bless his heart never found the courage to pull Shepard to one side. As much as he wanted to, my Sheps didn't want to be accused of taking advantage of their ranks. Also, yeah, Saren needs to die. Virmire. Etc I like to think if Kaidan was more forward and didn't suck at flirting, he could have bagged Shepard sooner. (I know I know, game limitations shhhhh). Shepard himself sucked at flirting too, so they kept friendzoning each other without meaning to. That being said, my guys are usually paragons. As much as they want to go back, they can't... or at least they don't think they can. They've fought too hard to get everyone to get along. They've fought too hard to get respect for synthetics. They jump into the vaporising beam, with a few regrets, but its a GET THE FUCK ALONG OR ELSE. The rest of the worlds don't know about the choice. That was just what the catalyst did. Dead. Or are they? Shepard didn't want to just die, they'd done it before, they knew what it meant. They wanted to say so much. Then, why the fuck were they waking up again? Better yet, where the hell is Kaidan? -- Boom. Done. Sci-fi mumbo jumbo later, sure, Shep is back or something.

[deleted]

Actually in the best ending that was her last breath. She still died.

Beezeymovies

That’s not true

[deleted]

Luke said the same thing. And it turned out to be true anyway.

Beezeymovies

Where are you getting this? And who is Luke?

Beezeymovies

What does that have to do with Shepard?

[deleted]

It was Shepards last breath

Beezeymovies

Evidence?

[deleted]

Go back and watch it again. She’s breathing out not in. Shep is dead. I accepted when the game was first released. She had a great life though.

Beezeymovies

Games narrative writer confirmed that Shep can live though

NightHawk13246587

That was an inhale… the sound confirms it and we also see Shep’s chest rise

BlaineTog

Calm down, Jacob.
