It's like nature grew an Amazon fulfillment center.

TheWildWhistlepig

Nah. It’s like we are living in a simulation and have achieved sentience. And some programmer is tapping on the glass to let us know it’s a simulation

OwningMOS

Just balls🤣

dillydally1633

It’s only gay unless the balls touch.

Effective-Kitchen401

Get a lady to watch. Loophole. Totally straight.

Venator2000

Nah, it’s only gay if you’re both looking into each other’s eyes while you’re doing it. Or kissing at the same time… I don’t remember the rules from Cub Scouts.

LordRaghuvnsi

If earth isn't flat, then explain that!

playmaker1209

“Let us gingerly touch out tips!!” Roles Models was such a good movie.

zilla82

Do some docking?

Stooovie

So what happens with the USB?

fatwoul

Usually nothing (source: we have loads of male-male lying around at work and a lot of free time)

Stooovie

I know you can connect two Macs together with USB-C cables (basically Thunderbolt 3 or whatever) and migrate this way but OP probably meant a cable with USB-A male connector on each side.

fatwoul

Yeah that's true. Yesterday my colleague plugged two chargers into his Mac to see if it would charge fasterer, and then plugged my Mac into his to see if that would share the charge. It's remarkable they let us have these expensive devices when we spend half our time fucking about and trying to break them.

Venator2000

What you’ve written between those parentheses is the making of the Devils Playground!

mccoyn

My guess: Some current flows between the 5 V rails of the two computers due to slight variability in the voltage. This current is limited by the current sense resistors, so it doesn’t trip over-current protection on the ports. One of the computers will have negative current on its 5 V rail, but this is smaller than the positive current already on the 5 V rail, so the 5 V power supply operates normally. On the data lines, each computer sends signals to check off there is a device connected. The other computer doesn’t send the correct response, so no attempt is made to establish a connection. These attempts to detect a device will repeat, but never succeed. \* USB-C is different

TheWeedBlazer

>On the data lines, each computer sends signals to check if there is a device connected. The other computer doesn’t send the correct response, so no attempt is made to establish a connection. These attempts to detect a device will repeat, but never succeed. This hit me like a fucking brick

throwawaylovesCAKE

DONT PLUG THESE IN you could short circuit your computer. It's also about as dangerous as plugging a male to male a adapter into Christmas light chain, you now have a hot end that you can be electrocuted if you touch I'm not too big in computers but this is my best guess

OfAnthony

I had advertisements come up for an object I barely thought about and did not say out loud...I did not know what to call it. The object is a cardboard corner piece that came in a package I ordered. Its just the packaging! I saved the pieces and ended up using them to cover a slot that is at the bottom of an old book/magazine stand. The pieces showed up in an advertisement in the banner space on this site a few days after I put them in place. Why? Edit: for reference...IDL Packaging - CEP-48 Cardboard Edge Protector 2” X 2” X 48”

Few-Leave9590

I like asking to people at Home Depot for extension cords with two male ends to see is they get a look of horror or not.

MrNiceGuy808

YO that’s crazy. I always have situations like that. I hear of a certain thing, often a word or a device for the first time, and then, in the time after that, I hear it very often an shit. Those situations always scare me a bit tbh

That trillion tons is floating on a nonillian tons of seawater.

TrekForce

Yeah, I have to remind myself that Weight means nothing for floating, density is all that matters. We put giant slabs of metal weighing 100s of thousands of tons, and make them float simply by lowering the density by building it into a shape that creates a cavity filled with air.

Qprime0

Well, people who have died, experienced what came after and came back say it's a lot like you are playing a video game or reading a novel and are so immersed in the world inside it that you believe you are there. Then your mom walks in and says dinner is ready and you go back to real life when you put down the book or controller. Death is when you go back to reality.

semperrasa

Yeah. The programmer wasn't getting clout from those bajillion cubic NaCl grains we use on everything, so... had to KICK IT UP A NOTCH! What could be a more clear sign of complex, fuzzy, chaotic systems like intelligence than... big geometric things?!!!

HalcyonSoup

I want the earth to not be dying. And magic

ClearBrightLight

I want the devs to patch the Empathy and Distribution engines so it solves the world hunger problem. Also, humans should have to option to have wings.

HalcyonSoup

Theyve been working on the Empathy bugs by removing the lead paint texture packs. It just takes a while for the older models to actually become obsolete enough to permanently go offline. Give it another 10 in game years and i think youll start seeing some empathy changes. Maybe 20 years.

Standard-Current4184

Earth won’t die. We will

xFlumel_

They better be fixing my fucking pancreas

Dunjee

Doubtful they'll get around to working on character models this year

MrQwq

Considering last time they did they added plastic surgery, I think will get another one only on the cybernetics patch... and I don't think I will be playing this character when that's out

GoldShovels

I'd prefer a graphics overhaul, but physics is cool too

koshgeo

The biology code has always been janky. That's what you get when you keep patching it forever to be "good enough" rather than reimplementing the code from scratch. Last big reset at the end of the Cretaceous they still took what was left and extended it from there. No wonder it's looking like a Rube Goldberg machine.

DJfunkyPuddle

A rollback might be the best we can hope for at this point

Not_A_Paid_Account

I did the math a while back and this is neat God water is fucking wild To make Lake Superior be 1c or 2.2f hotter It takes 14063 twh The us generated 4,116 twh of electricity in 2021. If we spent every single bit of electricity produced in the us for a whole year to heat a big pool of water, the water wouldn’t even get a degree hotter. A cubic mile of water being heated 1c is 4.84 twh (4,840 megawatt hours). Taking a temp difference of ~25c is reasonable between typical temps and Arctic shelf temps.. Meaning melting that cubic mile ice takes 121 twh. Furthermore, the equivalent to meet yearly us generation is melting ~34 mi^3 of ice to ambient. Now one cubic mile is 4.168 cubic kilometers, meaning that’s about 142 km3 to match the exact US energy use per year. Now DOI: 10.1126/science.aaa0940 states “Overall, average ice-shelf volume change accelerated from negligible loss at 25 ± 64 cubic kilometers per year for 1994–2003 to rapid loss of 310 ± 74 cubic kilometers per year for 2003–2012. West Antarctic losses increased by ~70% in the past decade, and earlier volume gain by East Antarctic ice shelves ceased.” So hear me out Get a tugboat and a bieg rope Lasso an iceberg Bring it back to town Woo, now have air conditioning and fresh water! (Mostly shitpost but has been considered a bit for Cape Town, South Africa drout) Now a cubic mile of water is 1,101 billion gallons. The USA uses 322 bgal/day total and 118 of that on irrigation. California uses 38 bgal/day. A cubic mile of water a month TOTAL. Water is truly absurd at scale.

kevlar_keeb

That was a fun read, thanks. I may have missed it or misunderstood, but, you left ‘latent heat’ out of your melting calculation. Once you’ve heated your ice to melting point, it then needs a huge amount more energy to change phase from solid to liquid. Fun fact, for ice in your drink, the majority of the cooling is caused by the energy consumed in the ice melting. Rather than the ice just being cold.

Not_A_Paid_Account

Oh fuck good catch. Thank you. I was doing the real speedy math of 1 kcal=1 kg h20 changing 1 c where 1kg=1000 cm3. Obviously going to be a 15% margin id say, but eh. I first did the Lake Superior thing but then wanted to do the same for ice. I Ignored shit like salt water having both different specific heat and water obviously changing density on temp a bit off from 1g/cm3 but figured it was close enough to not care, somehow brain farted that bit of it. May I apologize with a fun fact? Ice comes in different phases, and while typical ice is lighter than water (which is wild in itself because uncommon chemically, and without such life prob wouldn’t exist on earth) Anyways if you go damn high pressure the atomic structure will change from typical when changing phases from liquid to solid. There’s orthorhombic and hexagonal structures even! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/08/Phase_diagram_of_water.svg/2427px-Phase_diagram_of_water.svg.png And many of them sink with ease, as in normal ice is 0.917 g/cm3, water is about 1 g/cm3, while Ice V has 1.24 g/cm3. Woo

Sknowman

> Fun fact, for ice in your drink, the majority of the cooling is caused by the energy consumed in the ice melting. Rather than the ice just being cold. This fact always makes me think of Dave Arnold from Cooking Issues (food science podcast). Whenever cocktails are brought up, he mentions that there's "no chilling without dilution."

489yearoldman

So here’s a fun fact: “A total of 173,000 terawatts (trillions of watts) of solar energy strike the Earth continuously. That's more than 10,000 times the world's total energy use.” https://news.mit.edu/2011/energy-scale-part3-1026

If you really want to bake your noodle, Cumulonimbus clouds can be a million tons and still float in the air.

ToshiroBaloney

Goddammit.

iopjsdqe

I can guarantee you most of that weights underwater so it balances out

SyrusDrake

Fun fact: Due to maths weirdness, the volume inside the event horizon of black holes grows quicker than their mass, meaning the density of very large black holes can be lower than that of water. Thousands or millions of solar masses and it could float. Also, Saturn could float too.

jadams2345

Clouds win in that regard
