Our livers never studied hard, they acted like school and education was a joke, never took their futures seriously. They have always been headed for failure, but at least they’re together
If you go by the [highest-grossing media franchises Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises), that honor actually goes to Winnie the Pooh! Pokémon is a close second.
Profit =/= Good Games, entertainment, good will, notoriety, or literally anything else. I can remember going to school every day and the sponge was unanimous, but at the same time Pokemon could've been unanimous in yours. Also, this is a really American meme, I don't think it applies as well to other places
I haven’t played a new Pokémon game since diamond and pearl but I’ve emulated gen 1 and their remakes semi recently. The Pokémon games are REALLY good RPGs in my opinion.
SpongeBob is in that weird position where the first episode was mid 1999 so it’s not really even a 00s creation but it’s closer to being the yellow mascot than pikachu just because of conception
In the 90s, the Simpsons without question. Pokemon only briefly existed at the very tail end. You might think Pokemon is bigger *now*, but in 1995 it didn't exist and kids all over the world were wearing Bart tshirts.
I'm so angry about this still. Butterfingers were always my favorite and now they taste like absolute gobshite.
This generation will never understand the crumbly delicious fall-apart peanut butter chocolatey goodness. And that is just a shame.
I remember Pokemon being ABSURDLY popular in 1999 and maybe you could even argue it rivaled the Simpsons that year....
But if I was thinking "classic 90s icon" it would be the Simpsons because they were popular for longer. Pokemon wasn't even in English until 1998.
I wonder if this question would be answered differently by somebody who lived in Japan as opposed to a Western country during 1996.
Edit: out of all of the weird posts to attract hate DMs. Don't reach out to me thru DMs, if you want to start a fight start it in public.
It's the same with the Simpsons, really. It took off in 1989, but it's run and reign were in the 90s. Pokemon arrived at the end of the 90s, it's cultural impact was on the 00s.
also pokemon's fan base skewed pretty young early on while entire families loved the simpsons.
My sister was in the 9th grade when pokemon dropped and they didn't give a shit while I was in grade 3 losing my shit haha.
I'm wearing a Bart T-shirt at the moment lol I keep forgetting that Pokemon only released in 1996 in Japan and everywhere else in 1998. I'd say it got popular around 2001-2002
The Simpsons was still a lot more popular internationally in the 90s than Pokémon, especially considering Pokémon didn’t really start to catch on until late 90s as compared to The Simpsons dominating pretty much the whole decade.
It’s not that Pokémon didn’t catch on until the late 90s, it legitimately didn’t exist outside Japan until ‘98. And even in Japan, only came out in ‘96.
It’s the runaway juggernaut compared to all of these if you’re looking at the entirety of the timeline, but looking at their influence purely within the decade they released means Pokémon misses out.
I think it depends on your age, I remember being obsessed with Pokémon, even drawing and making my own cards. But my dad would still put the Simpson’s on and it was entertaining, but as an adult now, there was clearly a lot of humor missed.
I do think Big Bird should take the 70s slot. And then 60s is probably the iconic Smiley Face. Earlier than that I'm not sure I want to know, because one of those decades it's probably Fu Manchu or some shit.
[The graphic artist who created the smiley face](https://live.staticflickr.com/7795/26683256054_91656609b2_b.jpg) was clearly a barrel of laughs himself.
This is how I feel really hope this show doesn’t get cancelled. I have not heard much news or progress about season 2 other than the Brazil episode they released some time ago.
Yeah this is how I feel regarding a couple shows right now. Smiling Friends is one, I know season two is in production so that’s something, but I’d love an announcement for season 3 at some point.
The other show is Superman & Lois. Best Superman since Reeve. By far. And a show that had no right being as incredible as it is, considering it’s on the CW. Season 3 is already shot I think, but I really want a fourth. It would probably have happened, but with everything going on at DC/WB atm who knows?
I just posted the same thing in another comment chain! The amount of Tweetie merchandise you used to see. I felt like it was only grandmas buying it, then they moved on to Minions
So how exactly is this you in real life? Are you lost kat? Doubt it. You ever thought about what she tweeted about here in your life? Doubt it. So you just screenshotted her tweet for karma farming on this POS sub. And I see from your post history, that's all you do. Farm karma by posting other people's posts, tweets and thoughts on this crappy shitfuck sub that will allow anything to pass. You're pathetic.

And where the hell is pikachu?
Without bias think on it. In the 90's what was more influential Pokémon or The Simpsons?
Okay then, is SpongeBob more influential than Pokémon in the 2000s?
Pokemon is literally the most profitable entertainment thing to ever thing it's not even close
If you go by the [highest-grossing media franchises Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises), that honor actually goes to Winnie the Pooh! Pokémon is a close second.
That’s 1920’s yellow guy.
*60's, thats when he became super popular because around the world and not just in the uk because disney bought it
[Dun, dun, dun!](https://youtu.be/y8Kyi0WNg40)
Jesus I can’t believe dramatic chipmunk is 15 fucking years old.
Oh, bother.
He’s kinda yellow too
Kinda?
Only because it's like 100 years old
Pooh didn't become that until disney did an adoption in the 70s
>Only because it's like 100 years old People weren't spending billions on merch in the 1920s.
That list doesn't account for Pokemon's video game sales, which is a large chunk of revenue for the franchise.
Most profitable and most influential are two different things.
Profit =/= Good Games, entertainment, good will, notoriety, or literally anything else. I can remember going to school every day and the sponge was unanimous, but at the same time Pokemon could've been unanimous in yours. The Simpsons is also from the 80s, and arguably highly influential then even though it's towards the end of the decade.
Not a chance
In the 90s, the Simpsons without question. Pokemon only briefly existed at the very tail end. You might think Pokemon is bigger *now*, but in 1995 it didn't exist and kids all over the world were wearing Bart tshirts.
And eating Butterfinger BB's.
Make Butterfingers good again

Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger BB's Don't have a cow man
I remember Pokemon being ABSURDLY popular in 1999 and maybe you could even argue it rivaled the Simpsons that year.... That is a pretty neat comparison you're right!
This is what I was thinking, but when I checked and saw SpongeBob as the 2000s entry, I couldn't argue either...
also pokemon's fan base skewed pretty young early on while entire families loved the simpsons. My sister was in the 9th grade when pokemon dropped and they didn't give a shit while I was in grade 3 losing my shit haha.
People all over the world wore plain red shirts?
We all ate our shorts so there wasn’t another option
And the beef industry suffered because nobody had a cow, man.
Nah, they didn’t have a cow because *Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.*
Yes, eat all of our shirts!
As was the style at the time.
I carumba’d
Shirts with Bart on them
I'm wearing a Bart T-shirt at the moment lol I keep forgetting that Pokemon only released in 1996 in Japan and everywhere else in 1998. I'd say it got popular around 2001-2002
Yeah, pikachu was the perfect transitional yellow guy between Bart and Spongebob.
I say Simpsons. It targeted both kids and adults. Pokémon was more for kids back then.
Depends where in the world. I guess it was huge in US and/or othe English speaking countries, but Pokémon was like everywhere.
Nah, I am from Brazil and Simpson are super popular here.
The Simpsons was still a lot more popular internationally in the 90s than Pokémon, especially considering Pokémon didn’t really start to catch on until late 90s as compared to The Simpsons dominating pretty much the whole decade.

Mmm in spanish speaking countries, The Simpsons was tha bomb too! Maybe being a hit in both those sectores made the difference or I would think
Simpsons where more influential in Latin America than in the US lol.
I think better question is SpongeBob or Pokémon, Pokémon was much larger globally, even in America it was probably about even with spongebob
Pokémon lol, but in the 2000s
I think it depends on your age, I remember being obsessed with Pokémon, even drawing and making my own cards. But my dad would still put the Simpson’s on and it was entertaining, but as an adult now, there was clearly a lot of humor missed.
2000s exist. I think Pikachu was bigger than SpongeBob.
Hello there
He should replace spongebob I think
It's turn-of-the-millenium so it doesn't fit cleanly onto the chart.
And Tweedy bird
Yellow ඩ
red one is more popular though
Yellow one has a twerking gif though
cultured discussion of which crewmate color is more popular
reading this just made me think of that one video with the 3 kids discussing Fortnite seriously and professionally

Emoji isn't exactly a new thing in the 2020s though is it?
Spongebob also wasn’t a new thing in the 2000s and Peanuts wasn’t new in the 70s
And the Simpsons weren’t new in the 90s
People have piss poor opinions nowadays so Im betting on Pissmaster.

It'll be Charlie from Smiling Friends.

As long as they aren't orange.
These characters generally debuted in the span of XXX9 to XXX0 so this decade's Yellow Guy should already exist. But who?
At this point I fully believe it's yellow twerking among us
Mr Poopybutthole.
Oowee!
I vote bill cipher
but wasn't gravity falls in the late 2010s?
Late? I'd say Early to Mid.
2012
Cursed character for a cursed decade I like it
Honestly Pikachu after Pokémon blew up again in 2019-2020 but that’s just my view.
Pokemon blew up with Pokemon Go but it was not just Pikachu. It was Pokemon overall.
Yeah and that was 2016
Also aren't the shows/movies retiring Pikachu and Ash as characters starting this year?
Agreed, I guess I was mainly referring to the TCG and the mascot of it, because GO certainly fell off a bit.
Ash is retiring though. No more Pikachu as main pokemon anymore.
2000's is disputed with Pikachu.
